The verdict
A struggling subcompact luxury suv, strong on value and held back by efficiency.
The 2019 XC40 was Volvo's first small SUV, and its launch year still holds up as a stylish, safe and clever buy. It earned an IIHS Top Safety Pick+, has excellent front seats and smart cabin storage, and came with three years of free scheduled maintenance from $34,195. The trade-offs are a small cargo hold, a T5 AWD that wants premium fuel (about $3,150 a year), and launch-year teething troubles, including four recalls. Buy one with the Advanced package if you can: it adds the only headlights that rate Good.

Detailed scoring by subject
1Performance & PowertrainOne of the XC40's weakest categories.0.92F
2019 is the XC40's launch model year in the US (first generation, production from late 2017). The volume T5 AWD makes 248 hp; the front-drive T4 that joined the 2019 lineup makes 187 hp.
258 lb-ft from the T5 arrives low in the rev range; middling for the subcompact luxury class.
Instrumented tests put the 2019 T5 AWD at 6.2–6.3 s to 60 mph, quick for the segment; the T4 front-driver is around 8 s.
The T5 turbo four pulls strongly once boost builds, but reviewers note a beat of turbo lag from rest, an abrupt stop-start and a coarse note when worked hard.
The Aisin 8-speed automatic shifts cleanly once moving, but low-speed take-up can be hesitant, especially on stop-start restarts; R-Design adds paddles.
3,500 lbs is competitive for a subcompact luxury SUV — enough for a small camper or a pair of jet skis.
AWD comes with the T5 on every trim (Momentum, R-Design, Inscription), but the T4 is front-drive only and the system is a conventional on-demand setup with no low range or lockers.
Around 8.3 in of ground clearance plus an off-road drive mode with hill descent control are decent for the class, but there are no skid plates, lockers or off-road trim — pavement-oriented.
The 2019 US XC40 offered only two tunes of the same 2.0L turbo four (T4 FWD, T5 AWD) — no hybrid, PHEV or EV; the Recharge models came later and the T5 PHEV was never sold in the US for 2019.
2Efficiency & RangeThe XC40's lowest-graded category.0.90F
The volume T5 AWD is EPA-rated 26 MPG combined for 2019 (a point better than the 2020 re-rating); the T4 front-driver manages 27. Middling for a gas luxury SUV.
23 MPG city with no electrification of any kind.
31 MPG highway for the T5 AWD; the boxy shape and AWD cost it a couple of MPG versus the front-drive T4.
A small 14.2-gallon tank and 26 MPG combined give roughly 369 miles — short for the class.
EPA's published annual cost for the T5 AWD is $3,150 on premium fuel — expensive for the segment; the regular-fuel T4 is $2,500.
Mixed across trims: the volume T5 AWD is EPA-listed on premium, while the base T4 runs on regular unleaded.
3SafetyGrades below the middle of the scale.1.66D
NHTSA lists the 2019 XC40 T4 and T5 but never crash-tested that model year, so there is no 2019 star rating. The first NHTSA rating (5 stars overall) came with the 2020 model year.
The 2019 XC40 earned an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ with Good ratings in every crashworthiness test. The award applies only to cars with the Advanced-package curve-adaptive headlights, because the standard lamps rate Poor.
Every trim gets City Safety AEB (vehicle, pedestrian, cyclist and large-animal detection), Lane Keeping Aid, Run-off Road Mitigation and oncoming-lane mitigation. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert and Pilot Assist adaptive cruise were optional (Vision/Advanced packages), so the core is standard but key items cost extra.
The standard City Safety system earned IIHS's top rating (Superior) in both the vehicle-to-vehicle and daytime pedestrian tests. IIHS ran no nighttime pedestrian test in 2019, so there is no night result to weigh.
When fitted, BLIS (with steer assist) and Cross Traffic Alert with autobrake both actively intervene. Both were optional on the 2019 car rather than standard across the range.
Lane Keeping Aid and lane departure warning are standard. True lane centering comes only with Pilot Assist in the optional Advanced Package, and reviewers describe Volvo's centering of this era as conservative, disengaging on faded lines.
Pilot Assist is full-speed-range ACC with stop-and-go and steering support, so the system itself is capable. It is an extra-cost Advanced Package item rather than standard, and reviewers note it brakes abruptly on cut-ins.
No hands-free highway driving was offered on any 2019 XC40. Pilot Assist requires the driver's hands on the wheel.
IIHS rated two headlight variants. The curve-adaptive LEDs that come with the optional Advanced Package rate Good. The standard non-adaptive LED reflectors fitted to the volume configuration rate Poor, which is why the TSP+ award is limited to the Advanced-package lamps.
The upright, boxy body and high seat give good forward and side sightlines for a subcompact. The rising beltline and thick rear pillars limit the rear three-quarter view, and the 360° camera that compensates is optional (Advanced Package).
IIHS rates the XC40's LATCH Acceptable, with full hardware at two rear positions and a tether-only third. Square door openings help with installation, but the subcompact rear makes three-across and rear-facing seats tight.
4Space & ComfortOne of the XC40's weakest categories.1.04D
The 2019 XC40 was the launch model year of the first generation. Every trim (Momentum, R-Design, Inscription) is a two-row five-seater.
39.0 in of front headroom without the panoramic roof sits mid-band for an SUV. The optional panoramic moonroof costs about 1.4 in.
This is near the bottom of the SUV band. The short 106.4-in wheelbase limits seat travel, though most drivers still fit comfortably.
The upright, boxy roofline gives generous rear head clearance, the XC40's best passenger-space figure.
Competitive for a subcompact luxury SUV, but knee room tightens behind a tall driver.
No 2019 XC40 has a third row. The item is scored in the low band, as the rules require for a two-row SUV.
About 21 cu ft behind the rear seat is below the SUV band floor. Small cargo space is a consistent criticism of the first-generation XC40.
Just above the SUV band floor, roughly level with subcompact luxury rivals like the BMW X1.
Small-item storage is the XC40's signature. The dash-mounted woofer frees laptop-sized door bins, and the cabin adds a removable console trash bin, an under-seat drawer, a folding cargo-floor divider with bag hooks and elastic straps, plus an underfloor cubby.
Volvo's supportive front seats are a class benchmark for long drives. The rear bench is flatter with a short cushion, and some reviewers flagged front ergonomics for certain body types.
Reviewers praise a comfortable, well-damped ride. The short wheelbase and the R-Design's 19–20 in wheels with sport suspension make it busy over broken pavement.
Wind and engine noise are well muted at cruise for a subcompact. Coarse-surface road roar intrudes more than in larger Volvos, especially on big wheels.
Automatic climate with a charcoal filter is standard, but the volume Momentum is single-zone unless the Premium package is added. Heated front seats and a heated wheel are a $750 option on every trim, and remote pre-conditioning is available via Volvo On Call. No ventilated seats.
5Cost of OwnershipOne of the XC40's strongest categories.2.45C+
The 2019 launch year opened with T5 AWD trims; the 187-hp T4 Momentum front-driver followed in summer 2019 at $34,195 with destination, one of the lowest entry points in the subcompact luxury SUV class.
The T5 AWD was the launch and volume powertrain for 2019; a T5 Momentum with the Premium package and metallic paint, or a lightly optioned R-Design, typically stickered around $39K with destination.
Volvo's complimentary 3-year/36,000-mile factory scheduled maintenance covers routine service in years 1–3; years 4–5 fall outside the 4-yr/50K warranty on the 2.0L turbo four, and launch-year cars carried more early recalls.
Volvo residuals trail the German set, but a MY2019 car's first five years included the 2021–2022 used-car price spike, holding a ~$39K T5 AWD in the low-$20Ks at the five-year mark.
Volvo's US new-vehicle limited warranty is 4 years/50,000 miles, matching BMW, Audi and Mercedes-Benz.
Volvo offers no longer powertrain term on the gas XC40; engine and drivetrain share the 4-year/50,000-mile basic coverage, below the 5–10 year band.
Volvo includes 3 years/36,000 miles of factory scheduled maintenance plus 4 years of roadside assistance and a Volvo On Call connected-services period — multi-year maintenance that Audi Q3 and Mercedes GLA buyers don't get.
$39,000 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (53% retained, or about $20,670) leaves about $18,330 in depreciation. Add the projected $4,300 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $22,630 in total.
6Reliability & QualityMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.06C
2019 is the launch US model year of the CMA-based first generation (T4/T5 2.0T, Sensus infotainment). J.D. Power rates it average, and Consumer Reports gives it 3/5 reliability, below other 2019 models. Owners complain about brakes and electrical/infotainment faults, which is typical first-year teething and puts it in the lower half of the average band.
Volvo has ranked below the industry average in J.D. Power's dependability study for several years, mostly on electrical and infotainment faults. Consumer Reports puts the brand in the lower half rather than at the bottom, which places it on the mid-pack/low boundary.
The 2019 XC40 has four NHTSA campaigns, the most of any XC40 year. Two are launch-year assembly faults specific to the XC40 (brake-pedal rivets, missing rear seatback strikers), and two are fleet-wide software recalls (VCM emergency-call GPS, City Safety AEB). All have simple remedies and none is systemic, but the brake-pedal and AEB recalls touch safety systems.
The 2019 gas XC40 uses the mature 2.0L VEA (Drive-E) turbo four in T4/T5 tune with the Aisin 8-speed automatic. The engine family has no catastrophic failure mode. Known wear items are timing-belt service, PCV faults and direct-injection carbon buildup.
Reviewers praise the cabin's Scandinavian design, felt and textile surfaces, and solid switchgear, all above the segment norm for the price. It stops short of class-leading because of hard plastics in the lower cabin and doors compared with the BMW X1 and Audi Q3.
XC40s from the Ghent plant are generally well assembled, but this launch year carries two assembly-defect recalls and owner complaints about door, lock, seat and sunroof hardware. Together with average J.D. Power quality, that places it below later model years.
Volvo has roughly 280 US dealers, far fewer than BMW, Mercedes-Benz or Lexus, and most are on the coasts and in major metros. Owners in rural or interior areas can face long drives for warranty work, and service satisfaction is mid-pack.
Parts are priced at European-luxury levels and come mostly through dealer channels, with a thinner independent aftermarket than the German brands. Maintenance costs run above the all-brand average, and the timing-belt service is a large one-time bill.
7Technology & InfotainmentGrades below the middle of the scale.1.45D
Every 2019 XC40 trim uses Volvo's 9-inch portrait Sensus touchscreen. No larger screen was offered.
Sensus looks crisp and tablet-like, and CarPlay runs in a tile you can jump out of easily. It buries climate and seat heating behind swipes and submenus with almost no physical controls, and it can lag.
Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard on every 2019 trim, but only by USB cable. Wireless projection was not offered on the Sensus system.
Native Sensus navigation is a $1,395 Multimedia package option rather than standard, and Volvo's command-style voice control is clumsy. Most owners rely on phone projection instead.
The base system is adequate. The Harman Kardon upgrade, with its dash-mounted air-ventilated woofer, is affordable and well reviewed.
A 12.3-inch digital driver display is standard and can show the navigation map, though it is less configurable than Audi's Virtual Cockpit.
The Sensus-era XC40 has no meaningful over-the-air software updates. System software is updated at the dealer, and only maps can be downloaded. Whole-vehicle OTA arrived with the Android-based cars.
Volvo On Call covers remote lock/unlock, locate, remote start and climate pre-conditioning. Owners report sluggish or failed commands, and the service becomes a subscription after the included term.
Front USB ports are standard, but the wireless charging pad comes only with the Premium package (standard on Inscription). Rear charging and household power are limited.
Push-button start is standard. Keyless entry and a hands-free tailgate are package options on the volume Momentum, and remote start comes via Volvo On Call. No phone-as-key.
A rear camera and rear park sensors are standard. The 360-degree camera is in the $985 Advanced package, and its resolution is middling.
No 2019 XC40 trim or package offers a head-up display.
8Use-Case FitMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.80C-
Square door openings and a tall roof make car-seat installs easier, and the big door bins swallow family clutter. The ~21 cu ft hold struggles with a full-size stroller plus groceries.
IIHS Top Safety Pick+ with Good crash ratings across the board, and City Safety AEB plus lane keeping are standard. NHTSA never rated the 2019 model, the TSP+ needs the optional headlights, and blind-spot monitoring and Pilot Assist cost extra.
Excellent front seats and a quiet cabin help, but a flat rear bench, basic rear amenities and a small hold limit luggage with four aboard on longer trips.
The commanding seating position and early turbo torque make traffic easy. A beat of lag from rest, abrupt stop-start, touchscreen-buried climate controls and an odd double-pull shifter add friction.
The volume T5 AWD returns 26 MPG combined on premium fuel, about $3,150 a year per EPA, which is costly for the class. The regular-fuel T4 FWD is notably cheaper.
A compact ~174-in footprint, square hood and 37.4-ft turning circle make it easy in the city. The massive C-pillars hurt rear visibility, and the 360 camera is optional.
Not a work vehicle: the hold is small and there is no bed. A 3,500-lb tow rating lifts it to the top of the low band.
A luxury interior with no wear-friendly trim, a turbocharged four on premium fuel, and no fleet presence. As a launch model year it is also unproven.
No household outlet or upfit ecosystem, and the surfaces are carpeted. It offers only consumer features: cargo hooks, elastic straps, the folding floor divider and roof rails.
Superb front seats and a quiet cabin help, but about 369 miles of range from a 14.2-gal tank and Pilot Assist only as an extra-cost package limit its touring credentials.
The volume T5 AWD, about 8.3 in of clearance with hill descent control, roof rails and a 3,500-lb tow rating handle gravel roads and bike racks. The T4 is FWD-only and there is no off-road hardware.
The square hold, folding floor divider and underfloor cubby use the limited space well, and the 60/40 fold opens 57.5 cu ft. Bulky gear is still a squeeze.
9Driving ExperienceOne of the XC40's strongest categories.2.36C+
Secure and predictable with responsive turn-in, but tuned for comfort with noticeable body roll, so it is less agile than the BMW X1. The R-Design's stiffer suspension tightens it slightly.
Accurate and well weighted, with drive modes that adjust effort, but it gives little road feedback.
Conventional (non-hybrid) brakes give a firm, progressive pedal, and stopping distances test mid-pack for the class.
The T5 pulls strongly once boost builds. Turbo lag off the line, abrupt stop-start and hesitant low-speed take-up from the 8-speed hurt drivability.
Insulation keeps the 2.0-liter four subdued at cruise. It turns coarse when worked hard, and stop-start restarts send a shudder through the cabin.
Mid-pack for a subcompact luxury SUV.
High, upright seating gives a commanding forward view. Massive C-pillars, touchscreen-buried climate controls and a double-pull shifter that invites accidental Neutral cost points.
The T5's 248 hp and 6.3-second 0–60 give it real pace, but a comfort-tuned chassis with little feedback means it rarely tempts you to take the long way home.
10Value & Market PositionThe XC40's best-graded category.2.79B-
Every 2019 XC40 gets City Safety AEB, lane keeping, LED headlights, the 12.3-inch digital cluster, 9-inch Sensus touchscreen with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto and 3 years of included maintenance. Blind-spot monitoring, Pilot Assist, heated wheel, panoramic roof and power tailgate largely sit in packages or upper trims.
A $34.2K start and ~$36.2K for the 248-hp T5 AWD Momentum undercut the BMW X1 and Lexus UX on power per dollar while bundling a strong safety suite and included maintenance. Held back by middling cargo space and efficiency.
Two engines (T4 187 hp FWD, T5 248 hp AWD) across Momentum, R-Design and Inscription, but the launch year opened T5-only with the T4 and some trim combinations arriving mid-year; no hybrid or EV in the US.
In its first full US year the XC40 sold about 17,650 units as production ramped (with early order backlogs and subscription demand), a respectable but mid-pack figure behind the BMW X1 and Mercedes GLA volume leaders.
Volvo's safety-and-Scandinavian-design image is distinctive and earns real loyalty — 2019 was its best US year since 2007 — but trails BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Audi in aspirational pull and badge-driven resale.
As a hot new launch with constrained supply and much of early production channelled into the Care by Volvo subscription, the 2019 XC40 sold near MSRP initially; lease offers and modest discounts appeared as inventory built late in the model year.
2019 is the first US model year of an all-new generation on Volvo's new CMA platform, with current safety tech and design; the facelift wouldn't arrive until MY2023.
The XC40 won 2018 European Car of the Year and 2019 North American Utility of the Year, and launch reviews widely ranked it at or near the top of the class for design, comfort, safety and the peppy T5, with knocks for the laggy Sensus touchscreen and modest cargo space.
