The verdict
A mixed-report subcompact luxury suv, strong on safety and held back by efficiency.
The 2021 XC40 is a safe and stylish small luxury SUV. It earned an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ and five NHTSA stars, has some of the best front seats in the class, and opens at a low $34,795. The volume T5 AWD is also genuinely quick, with 248 hp and a roughly 6.2-second run to 60 mph. The trade-offs show up in daily use: only 20.7 cu ft of cargo space, 25 MPG on premium fuel (about $3,300 a year), a laggy 9-inch touchscreen, and a powertrain warranty no longer than the 4-year basic coverage. Shop it for safety and design rather than space or running costs.
Jump to scoresStrengths

- Low luxury entry price with three years of free maintenance
What holds it back
- Thirsty, premium-fuel T5 with a short range
- Small cargo area for an SUV
- Laggy, dated infotainment

Detailed scoring by subject
1Performance & PowertrainOne of the XC40's weakest categories.1.04D
2021 is a carry-over year for the first-generation XC40's gas engines (the facelift arrives for 2023). The volume T5 AWD makes 248 hp, the base T4 front-driver 187 hp; the new Recharge Pure Electric tops the range at 402 hp but is a separate powertrain class.
258 lb-ft from the T5 arrives low in the rev range for brisk around-town response; middling for the subcompact luxury class.
The T5 AWD reaches 60 mph in about 6.2 seconds, quick for the segment; the T4 front-driver needs about 7.8 seconds.
The T5 turbo four pulls strongly once boost builds, but reviewers note a beat of turbo lag from rest, an abrupt conventional stop-start and a coarse note when worked hard.
The Aisin 8-speed automatic shifts cleanly once moving but low-speed take-up can be hesitant, especially on stop-start restarts; R-Design adds paddles.
3,500 lbs is competitive for a subcompact luxury SUV — enough for a small camper or a pair of jet skis.
AWD comes with the T5 on every trim level (Momentum, R-Design, Inscription) and on the Recharge EV, but the T4 is front-drive only and the gas system is a conventional on-demand setup with no low range or lockers.
Around 8.3 in of ground clearance and hill descent control with an off-road drive mode are decent for the class, but there are no skid plates, lockers or off-road trim — pavement-oriented.
2021 adds the Recharge Pure Electric (dual-motor AWD, 402 hp) alongside the T4 FWD and T5 AWD versions of the 2.0L turbo four — three choices including a full EV, though no hybrid or US-market PHEV.
2Efficiency & RangeThe XC40's lowest-graded category.0.54F
The volume T5 AWD is EPA-rated 25 MPG combined; the T4 front-driver manages 26. Middling for a gas luxury SUV.
22 MPG city with no electrification on the gas models; the AWD T5 is thirstiest in town.
30 MPG highway for the T5 AWD; the boxy shape and AWD cost it a few MPG versus slipperier rivals.
A small 14.2-gallon tank and 25 MPG combined give roughly 355 miles — short for the class.
EPA's published annual cost for the T5 AWD is $3,300 on premium fuel — expensive for the segment; the regular-fuel T4 is $2,600.
Mixed across trims: the volume T5 AWD is EPA-listed on premium, while the base T4 runs on regular unleaded.
3SafetyThe XC40's best-graded category.3.31B+
NHTSA rated every 2021 XC40 gas configuration five stars overall, with five-star frontal and side results and a four-star rollover rating typical of a tall subcompact SUV.
The 2021 XC40 is an IIHS Top Safety Pick+, rated Good in both small-overlap tests, both moderate-overlap tests, the original side test, roof strength and head restraints, with Good headlights. The only non-Good crash result is Acceptable in the later updated side test, which was not an award criterion for 2021.
Every 2021 trim gets City Safety AEB (pedestrian, cyclist and large-animal detection), Lane Keeping Aid, run-off-road mitigation, BLIS with Steer Assist, Cross Traffic Alert and rear automatic braking. Adaptive cruise is the gap: Pilot Assist comes only in the optional Advanced Package on the volume Momentum trim.
The standard City Safety system earned IIHS's top Superior rating in both the vehicle-to-vehicle and the daytime pedestrian tests. No nighttime pedestrian result is published, which keeps it short of the very top.
Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are standard on every trim, BLIS actively intervenes with Steer Assist, and rear automatic braking is standard. There is no safe-exit alert, which keeps it out of the upper reaches of the top band.
Lane departure warning and Lane Keeping Aid are standard. True lane centering arrives only with optional Pilot Assist, and reviewers find Volvo's centering conservative, dropping out on faded markings and tighter curves.
Pilot Assist is full-speed-range adaptive cruise with stop-and-go and steering support, so the system is capable when fitted. But it is a paid option on the volume 2021 trim rather than standard, and its braking on cut-ins is somewhat abrupt.
The 2021 XC40 offers no hands-free highway driving on any trim. Pilot Assist is a hands-on system that requires steering-wheel input.
IIHS rates the standard LED headlights Good on the 2021 XC40. They are curve-adaptive and paired with high-beam assist.
The boxy body, tall glasshouse and high seating position give good forward and side sightlines for a subcompact. The rising beltline and thick D-pillars limit the rear three-quarter view, and the compensating 360° camera is part of the optional Advanced Package.
IIHS rates the XC40's LATCH Acceptable, with full lower-anchor hardware in two rear positions. Square door openings help with installation, but the subcompact rear makes three-across and rear-facing seats tight.
4Space & ComfortOne of the XC40's weakest categories.0.97F
The 2021 XC40 is a two-row, five-passenger subcompact SUV on every trim (Momentum, R-Design, Inscription); no third-row option exists.
Per the item rule the no-sunroof figure is used: 39.0 in on the Momentum. The panoramic roof standard on R-Design and Inscription cuts that to a tight 37.6 in.
Near the bottom of the SUV band, a product of the short 106.4-in wheelbase; adequate for most drivers.
The boxy roofline keeps rear head clearance generous even under the panoramic roof — the XC40's strongest passenger-space figure.
Competitive for a subcompact luxury SUV — ahead of the Audi Q3 and Lexus UX — though knee room tightens behind a tall driver.
No third row exists on any 2021 XC40; scored in the low band as the item requires for a two-row SUV.
About 21 cu ft behind the rear seats falls below the SUV band's 25 cu ft floor; reviewers routinely flag the cargo area as tight for the class.
Just above the SUV band floor; roughly level with the BMW X1 within the subcompact luxury class.
Small-item storage is the XC40's signature: the dash-mounted woofer frees laptop-sized door bins, plus a removable console bin, under-seat drawer, folding cargo-floor divider with bag hooks and an underfloor cubby.
Volvo's front seats are a class benchmark for long-stint support with power adjustment and lumbar; the rear bench is flatter with a short cushion.
Momentum and Inscription ride with reasonable composure, but the short wheelbase and large wheels make it busy over broken pavement, and the R-Design's sport-tuned suspension is notably firm.
Wind and engine noise are well muted at cruise for a subcompact, though coarse-surface road roar and the T5's note under hard throttle intrude more than in larger Volvos.
Automatic climate control with rear vents is standard; heated front seats, heated wheel and heated washer nozzles come via the Climate package on every trim. No ventilated seats offered.
5Cost of OwnershipMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.21C
The 2021 gas lineup opens with the 187-hp T4 Momentum front-driver at $33,700 plus $1,095 destination, one of the lowest entry prices in the subcompact luxury SUV class.
The T5 AWD is the volume powertrain (the one scored elsewhere for this year). A T5 Momentum with the Premium package and metallic paint, or a near-base T5 R-Design, typically lands around $40K.
Volvo's complimentary 3-year/36,000-mile factory scheduled maintenance covers routine service in years 1–3, so five-year out-of-pocket cost is modest; years 4–5 fall outside the 4-year warranty.
Volvo residuals trail the German luxury set and the XC40 is lease-heavy; the 2021–22 used-car spike temporarily flattered values, but five-year retention projects to roughly half of MSRP.
Volvo's US new-vehicle limited warranty is 4 years/50,000 miles, matching BMW, Audi and Mercedes-Benz.
Volvo offers no longer powertrain term on the gas XC40; engine and drivetrain share the 4-year/50,000-mile basic coverage, below the 5–10 year band.
Volvo includes 3 years/36,000 miles of factory scheduled maintenance plus 4 years of roadside assistance and a Volvo On Call connected-services period — multi-year maintenance that Audi Q3 and Mercedes GLA buyers don't get.
$40,000 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (50% retained, or about $20,000) leaves about $20,000 in depreciation. Add the projected $4,300 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $24,300 in total.
6Reliability & QualityMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.15C
The 2021 gas XC40 carries over mid-cycle in the 2019+ CMA generation, using the T4/T5 2.0T and Sensus infotainment. J.D. Power rates its quality average, and Consumer Reports rates reliability 3/5. One owner-complaint aggregator calls 2021 the model's weakest year, mostly for electrical faults, so it sits a little below the 2022.
Volvo has ranked below the industry average in J.D. Power's dependability study for several years, mostly on electrical and infotainment faults. Consumer Reports puts the brand in the lower half rather than at the bottom, which places it on the mid-pack/low boundary.
The 2021 gas XC40 has three NHTSA campaigns: a seat-belt automatic-locking-retractor recall, the fleet-wide rearview-camera software recall, and that recall's follow-up after the first fix fell short. The BECM, accelerator-sensor and motor-bracket recalls apply only to the Recharge BEV. Nothing is powertrain- or fire-related, but the count is slightly heavier than the 2022's.
The volume T5 AWD uses the mature 2.0L VEA (Drive-E) turbo four with the Aisin 8-speed automatic, and the T4 FWD shares the same engine in a lower tune. There is no 48V mild-hybrid hardware before 2023. The engine family has no catastrophic failure mode; known wear items are timing-belt service, PCV faults and direct-injection carbon buildup.
Reviewers praise the cabin's Scandinavian design, felt and textile surfaces, and solid switchgear, all above the segment norm for the price. It stops short of class-leading because of hard plastics in the lower cabin and doors compared with the BMW X1 and Audi Q3.
XC40s from the Ghent plant are generally well assembled, with consistent panel gaps and an average J.D. Power quality score. Owner complaints about door locks, seats and the sunroof, plus scattered electrical gremlins, keep it out of the top band.
Volvo has roughly 280 US dealers, far fewer than BMW, Mercedes-Benz or Lexus, and most are on the coasts and in major metros. Owners in rural or interior areas can face long drives for warranty work, and service satisfaction is mid-pack.
Parts are priced at European-luxury levels and come mostly through dealer channels, with a thinner independent aftermarket than the German brands. Maintenance costs run above the all-brand average, and the timing-belt service is a large one-time bill.
7Technology & InfotainmentGrades below the middle of the scale.1.54D
Every 2021 XC40 uses Volvo's 9-inch portrait Sensus touchscreen; small against BMW and Mercedes widescreens.
Sensus looks clean with tablet-style tiles, but reviewers find its menus mazy and responses laggy, and climate controls live in the touchscreen with few physical buttons.
Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard on every 2021 trim, but wired only via the console USB port; no wireless projection is offered.
Sensus Navigation is standard on R-Design/Inscription and optional on Momentum, but its command-style voice control and dated maps lead most owners to use phone projection instead.
The base eight-speaker system is adequate; the optional Harman Kardon upgrade is inexpensive and sounds great, but no Bowers & Wilkins tier is offered on the XC40.
A 12.3-inch full-digital driver display is standard on every 2021 trim and can show navigation maps, though it is less configurable than Audi's Virtual Cockpit.
Pre-facelift Sensus cars receive map updates over Wi-Fi but no meaningful vehicle or infotainment software updates over the air; system updates require a dealer visit. Whole-vehicle OTA arrived only with Google built-in for 2023.
Volvo On Call covers remote lock/unlock, locate, engine remote start and climate pre-conditioning with an included subscription, but owners report slow or failed commands and there is no digital key.
USB-C ports front and rear are standard and a Qi wireless pad sits below the screen (optional on Momentum), but port count is modest and no household outlet is offered.
Push-button start and a power liftgate are standard; full Keyless Drive with hands-free tailgate comes in packages/upper trims, remote start via the app, and no phone-as-key.
A rear camera and rear park sensors are standard for 2021; the 360-degree camera and Park Assist Pilot come only in the optional Advanced package, and the surround view's resolution is mediocre.
No head-up display is offered on the 2021 XC40 at any trim or in any package; the 12.3-inch cluster is the only driver-facing display.
8Use-Case FitMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.80C-
Square rear doors, a tall roof and IIHS-Acceptable LATCH make one or two car seats easy, but the 36.1-in rear legroom and 20.7 cu ft cargo bay get tight with rear-facing seats plus a stroller.
IIHS Top Safety Pick+ and NHTSA five-star overall, with City Safety AEB, BLIS, cross-traffic alert and lane keeping standard on every 2021 trim; adaptive cruise is the paid gap.
Excellent front seats and rear USB-C/vents help, but the subcompact rear and ~21 cu ft of luggage space limit four-up long trips.
Compact, high-riding and quick, but turbo lag from rest, an abrupt stop-start and the laggy Sensus touchscreen for climate add daily friction.
25 MPG combined on premium fuel (~$3,300/yr EPA estimate) is below average for a subcompact SUV, partly offset by 3 years of included maintenance.
A short 174-in footprint, 37.4-ft turning circle and standard rear sensors/camera make it easy in town; 360 camera is optional and the thick D-pillars limit the rear-three-quarter view.
A 3,500-lb tow rating handles a small trailer, but the small cargo bay and luxury focus make it a light-duty tool at best.
Luxury-oriented interior materials and a consumer-focused chassis without a fleet track record; not built for hard use.
Cargo-floor divider with bag hooks, tie-down points, roof rails and an accessory hitch, but no onboard power outlet or work upfit ecosystem.
Superb seats and a quiet cabin, but only ~355 miles of range and adaptive cruise/Pilot Assist as an option limit its mile-eating ability.
AWD on the volume T5, ~8.3 in of clearance, hill descent control and a 3,500-lb tow rating handle gravel roads and bike racks, but it is not an off-roader.
60/40 split fold, ski pass-through, folding cargo-floor divider and underfloor storage are clever, but total volume is small for an SUV.
9Driving ExperienceOne of the XC40's strongest categories.2.37C+
Secure and predictable with decent grip from the T5 AWD, and the R-Design's sport suspension tightens body control, but it is less agile than a BMW X1 or Mercedes GLA.
Accurate and easy to place but light with little feedback.
Conventional hydraulic brakes with a firm, progressive pedal and no regen blending; no 2021-specific instrumented stopping distance was found, so scored mid-pack for the class.
The T5 pulls strongly once boost builds, but a beat of turbo lag from rest, an abrupt conventional stop-start and hesitant low-speed shifts hurt drivability.
Subdued at cruise, but the 2.0-liter four turns coarse when worked hard and stop-start restarts send a shudder through the cabin.
Mid-pack for a subcompact luxury SUV — tighter than the BMW X1, level with the GLA.
High, upright seating, deep glass and a power driver's seat fit a wide range of drivers, but climate controls buried in the laggy Sensus screen cost points.
The T5's 248 hp and ~6.2-s 0–60 give it genuine pace, but numb steering and a comfort-biased chassis mean it rarely invites the long way home.
10Value & Market PositionOne of the XC40's strongest categories.2.56C+
Every 2021 XC40 gets City Safety AEB, blind-spot and cross-traffic alert, lane keeping, LED headlights, the 12.3-inch digital cluster, 9-inch Sensus touchscreen with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto and 3 years of included maintenance. Panoramic roof, heated wheel, Pilot Assist and power tailgate sit mostly in packages or upper trims.
A ~$35K start and ~$37–42K for the volume T5 AWD undercut the BMW X1 and Mercedes GLB while bundling a 248-hp AWD powertrain, a strong safety suite and included maintenance. Fair-to-good value, held back by below-average resale and middling space and efficiency.
Two engines (T4 187 hp FWD, T5 248 hp AWD) across three distinct-character trims (Momentum, sporty R-Design, luxury Inscription), plus the new Recharge Pure Electric under the same nameplate. Well-spaced, though the T4 is FWD-only.
26,802 US sales in 2021 made the XC40 one of Volvo's top sellers and a solid mid-pack player in the subcompact luxury class, behind the BMW X1 and Mercedes GLA/GLB but ahead of most of the rest.
Volvo's safety-and-Scandinavian-design image is distinctive and earns real loyalty, but trails BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Audi in aspirational pull and in the badge premium that supports resale.
Early in the 2021 model year Volvo's usual subvented leases and loyalty offers were available, but the chip shortage from mid-2021 thinned inventory and pushed luxury transactions toward MSRP, leaving modest negotiating room.
2021 is the third US model year of a generation launched for MY2019 — mid-cycle, still on the conventional T4/T5 engines and Sensus infotainment, with the 2023 facelift (mild-hybrid powertrains, Google built-in) still two years off.
The generation launched as 2018 European Car of the Year and 2019 North American Utility of the Year, and 2021 reviews still praise its design, seats, safety tech and peppy T5, while knocking the laggy Sensus touchscreen, tight cargo area and firm R-Design ride.
