The verdict
A mixed-report subcompact luxury suv, strong on safety and held back by efficiency.
The 2023 XC40 is the facelift year, and it is a stylish, very safe small luxury SUV with a cabin full of clever touches. Every trim comes with a five-star NHTSA rating and a broad set of standard driver aids, and Google built-in brings the best voice control and navigation in the class. You give up a lot for that: a cargo hold of about 21 cu ft, a fuel bill of about $3,150 a year on premium, and a warranty and resale value that both trail the German brands. Buy it for the safety, the design and the easy city driving, not for space or running costs.

Detailed scoring by subject
1Performance & PowertrainOne of the XC40's weakest categories.1.10D
2023 is the facelift year, and the US gas XC40 moved to 48V mild-hybrid B-badged engines. The volume B5 AWD makes 247 hp; the base B4 front-driver makes 194 hp, and the separate Recharge Pure Electric twin-motor tops the nameplate at 402 hp.
258 lb-ft from the B5 arrives low in the rev range, giving brisk around-town response; middling for the subcompact luxury class.
The B5 AWD reaches 60 mph in about 6.1 seconds, quick for the segment; the B4 front-driver is a much more leisurely 7.6 s.
The new mild-hybrid B5 is smooth at cruise and the 48V starter-generator makes stop-start restarts gentler than the old T5, but reviewers still note a beat of turbo lag from rest and a coarse four-cylinder note when worked hard.
The 8-speed automatic shifts cleanly once moving but low-speed take-up can be hesitant, especially on stop-start restarts; no paddles on volume trims.
3,500 lbs is competitive for a subcompact luxury SUV — enough for a small camper or a pair of jet skis.
AWD comes with the B5 on every trim level, but the B4 is front-drive only, and the system is a conventional on-demand setup with no low range, lockers or terrain-mode suite.
Around 8.3 in of ground clearance and hill descent control are decent for the class, but there are no skid plates, lockers or off-road trim — pavement-oriented.
For 2023 the nameplate offered three distinct powertrains: B4 FWD and B5 AWD mild hybrids plus the XC40 Recharge Pure Electric twin-motor EV — broader than the later B5-only lineup, though with no full hybrid or PHEV in the US.
2Efficiency & RangeThe XC40's lowest-graded category.0.88F
The volume B5 AWD mild hybrid is EPA-rated 26 MPG combined; the B4 front-driver manages 27. Respectable for a gas luxury SUV but behind the X1 and GLA.
23 MPG city; the 48V system helps stop-start and coasting but never drives the wheels, so city gains are modest.
30 MPG highway for the B5 AWD; the boxy shape and AWD cost it a few MPG versus slipperier rivals.
A small 14.3-gallon tank and 26 MPG combined give roughly 372 miles — short for the class.
EPA's published annual cost for the B5 AWD is $3,150 on premium fuel — on the expensive side for the segment ($3,050 for the B4).
EPA lists premium gasoline and both engines are rated on 91 octane; Volvo permits regular with reduced output, so it sits at the low end of the 'premium recommended' band.
3SafetyThe XC40's best-graded category.3.12B
NHTSA rated the 2023 XC40 B5 AWD five stars overall with five-star frontal and side results and a four-star rollover rating, typical for a tall subcompact SUV.
Crashworthiness is strong: Good in both small-overlap tests, both moderate-overlap tests (including the updated rear-passenger version), roof strength and head restraints. But the updated side test is only Acceptable, with the structure rated Marginal. The 2023 gas XC40 earned no award, while the 2022 car was a TSP+, so this lands at the top of the 'mostly Good, no award' band.
Every trim gets a broad standard suite: City Safety AEB with pedestrian, cyclist and large-animal detection, Lane Keeping Aid, run-off-road mitigation, oncoming lane mitigation, BLIS with Steer Assist, and Cross Traffic Alert with autobrake. Adaptive cruise (Pilot Assist) is the gap. It is not standard on Core, optional on Plus and standard only on Ultimate, which holds the score at the bottom of the top band.
The standard system earned IIHS's top vehicle-to-vehicle rating (Superior), but the 2023 daytime pedestrian rating is Advanced rather than Superior, and IIHS lists no nighttime pedestrian result. Strong daytime performance with no verified night pedestrian result puts it in the upper-middle band.
Both systems are standard on every trim and both actively intervene. BLIS adds Steer Assist to counter an unsafe lane change, and Cross Traffic Alert brakes automatically. That is the top band for this segment.
Lane Keeping Aid and lane departure warning are standard. True lane centering comes only with Pilot Assist, which is optional on Plus and standard on Ultimate. Reviewers find Volvo's centering conservative: it drops out on faded markings and tighter curves.
Pilot Assist is full-speed-range adaptive cruise with stop-and-go and steering assist, so the highway system itself is capable. It loses points because it is missing from the Core trim, optional on Plus, and its braking on cut-ins is somewhat abrupt.
The 2023 XC40 has no hands-free highway driving on any trim. Pilot Assist is a hands-on system that requires steering-wheel input.
LED headlights are standard. The facelifted XC40/C40 Ultimate with Pixel LED headlights was rated Good by IIHS, and the pre-facelift 2022 LED headlights were Good on every trim. IIHS's 2023 gas-XC40 page lists no headlight ratings, so the Core/Plus units are not separately confirmed. Scored just below the top band.
The boxy body, tall glasshouse and high seating position give good forward and side sightlines for a subcompact. The rising beltline and thick D-pillars limit the rear three-quarter view, and the 360° camera that compensates is optional on Plus and standard only on Ultimate.
IIHS rates the XC40's LATCH Acceptable, with full lower-anchor hardware in two rear positions and a tether-only third. Square door openings help with installation, but the subcompact rear makes three-across and rear-facing seats tight.
4Space & ComfortOne of the XC40's weakest categories.0.99F
The 2023 XC40 is a strictly two-row, five-passenger subcompact SUV on every trim; no seven-seat or captain's-chair layout exists.
Per the item rule the no-sunroof figure is used: 39.0 in on the Core. The volume Plus trim's standard panoramic moonroof cuts that to a tight 37.6 in.
Front legroom sits near the bottom of the SUV band, a result of the short 106.4-in wheelbase; adequate for most drivers but less seat travel than an X1.
The boxy roofline preserves generous rear head clearance even with the panoramic roof on the volume Plus trim — the XC40's best passenger-space figure.
Competitive for a subcompact luxury SUV — ahead of the Audi Q3 and Lexus UX — but knee room tightens quickly behind a tall driver.
No third row exists on any XC40; scored in the low band as the item requires for a two-row SUV.
Roughly 21 cu ft behind the rear seats falls below the SUV band's 25 cu ft floor; reviewers single out cargo space as the XC40's biggest drawback.
Just above the SUV band floor; roughly par with the BMW X1 within the subcompact luxury class.
Small-item storage is the XC40's signature: speakers moved to the dash free up laptop-sized door bins, plus a removable console bin, under-seat drawers, a folding cargo-floor divider with bag hooks and an underfloor cubby.
Volvo's front seats are a class benchmark for long-stint support with power adjustment and lumbar; the rear bench is flatter with a short cushion.
Generally refined and comfortable, but the short wheelbase and 19–20 in wheels on Plus/Ultimate make it busy over broken pavement, with a fair amount of body roll.
Well isolated for a subcompact — wind and engine noise are muted at cruise — though coarse-surface road roar is more noticeable than in larger Volvos.
Dual-zone auto climate with rear vents is standard; heated front seats, heated wheel and heated washer nozzles come via the Climate package (available on every trim), and an air purifier is standard on Ultimate. No ventilated seats.
5Cost of OwnershipMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.84C-
The 2023 facelift-year lineup opens with the 194-hp B4 Core front-driver at $36,350 before destination, among the lowest entry prices in the subcompact luxury SUV class.
The B5 AWD Plus (Bright/Dark theme) is the volume configuration and the one scored elsewhere for this year; with destination, metallic paint and a Climate/Premium package it typically lands near $46K, consistent with CarEdge's ~$48K 'typically equipped' average across the nameplate.
Volvo's complimentary 3-year/36,000-mile factory scheduled maintenance covers most routine service in years 1–3, so out-of-pocket five-year cost is modest; nudged slightly above CarEdge's figure to allow for 48V mild-hybrid and out-of-warranty repair costs in years 4–5.
Volvo residuals trail the German luxury set and the XC40 is lease-heavy; industry estimates put five-year retention around the low-to-mid 50s at best, so roughly half of MSRP is a reasonable projection for the 2023 gas model.
Volvo's US new-vehicle limited warranty is 4 years/50,000 miles, matching BMW, Audi and Mercedes-Benz.
Volvo does not offer a longer powertrain term on the gas XC40; the engine and drivetrain share the 4-year/50,000-mile basic coverage, below the 5–10 year band.
Volvo includes 3 years/36,000 miles of factory scheduled maintenance plus 4 years of roadside assistance and an included Google built-in/Volvo Cars app digital-services period on the 2023 facelift — multi-year maintenance with real perks, which Audi Q3 and BMW X1 buyers don't get.
$46,000 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (50% retained, or about $23,000) leaves about $23,000 in depreciation. Add the projected $4,500 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $27,500 in total.
6Reliability & QualityMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.09C
2023 is the facelift year of the 2019+ CMA generation, adding the B5 48V mild-hybrid and Google-based infotainment to the gas XC40. Both J.D. Power and Consumer Reports rate the year average. Owner complaints centre on in-car electronics and battery drain rather than mechanical faults, so the score sits mid-band.
Volvo has ranked below the industry average in J.D. Power's dependability study for several years, mostly on electrical and infotainment faults. Consumer Reports puts the brand in the lower half rather than at the bottom, which places it on the mid-pack/low boundary.
The 2023 gas XC40 has four NHTSA campaigns, all software fixes, and none touches the engine, fuel system or structure. The most serious is a 2023-only brake-module fault that could drop ABS, ESC and traction control, which keeps this at the low end of typical. The e-call warning recall and the repeated rearview-camera recall (25V282, then 25V908 after the first fix fell short) are minor but point to a pattern of software faults.
The 2.0L VEA turbo four is a mature engine family with no catastrophic failure mode, paired with the widely used Aisin 8-speed automatic. The 48V starter-generator was new to the XC40 for 2023 and adds a modest extra failure point. Known wear items are timing-belt service, PCV faults and direct-injection carbon buildup.
Reviewers praise the cabin's Scandinavian design, textile and felt-lined surfaces, and solid switchgear, all above the segment norm for the price. It stops short of class-leading because of hard plastics in the lower cabin and doors compared with the BMW X1 and Audi Q3.
XC40s from the Ghent plant are well assembled, with consistent panel gaps and few rattle complaints. Initial quality is held back by infotainment and electrical glitches in the first year of the facelift rather than by assembly defects.
Volvo has roughly 280 US dealers, far fewer than BMW, Mercedes-Benz or Lexus, and most are on the coasts and in major metros. Owners in rural or interior areas can face long drives for warranty work, and service satisfaction is mid-pack.
Parts are priced at European-luxury levels and come mostly through dealer channels, with a thinner independent aftermarket than the German brands. Maintenance costs run above the all-brand average, and the timing-belt service is a large one-time bill.
7Technology & InfotainmentOne of the XC40's strongest categories.2.45C+
The 2023 facelift brought the Google built-in system on Volvo's 9-inch portrait display, the only screen size offered; small against BMW and Mercedes widescreens.
The new Android Automotive system boots quickly and is logically organized around Google apps, but reviewers found it 'almost a bit too simplistic' with limited customization, and climate controls are buried in the touchscreen.
For 2023 Apple CarPlay is wired-only, and Android Auto is not offered because Google built-in replaces it — wireless projection of either is absent on every trim.
Google Assistant and native Google Maps are the class benchmark for natural-language voice and live-traffic navigation — the strongest part of the 2023 tech package.
The 13-speaker Harman Kardon system is very good but standard only on the Ultimate; the base system is merely adequate and no Bowers & Wilkins is offered on the XC40.
A 12.3-inch full-digital driver display is standard on every trim and shows Google Maps in the cluster, though configurability is limited versus Audi's Virtual Cockpit.
Google built-in cars receive whole-vehicle over-the-air updates from Volvo, but in the 2023 model year the cadence was still early and feature additions (e.g. later CarPlay improvements) came slowly.
The Volvo Cars app covers remote lock/unlock, locate, remote start and climate pre-conditioning via included Digital Services, but owners frequently report slow or failed commands.
USB-C ports front and rear plus a wireless phone pad are competitive, but port count is modest and there is no household AC outlet.
Push-button start is standard and Keyless Drive with hands-free power tailgate is available (Convenience package / upper trims); remote start via the app, but no phone-as-key on 2023 cars.
A rear camera and park sensors are standard; the 360-degree camera is standard on Ultimate and in Plus's Driver Assist package, but its resolution is mediocre and it can show either top-down or side views, not both at once.
No head-up display is offered on the 2023 XC40 at any trim; the 12.3-inch cluster is the only driver-facing display.
8Use-Case FitMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.98C-
Square door openings and a tall roof make car-seat installs easier than in sloped-roof rivals, and the door bins swallow family clutter, but the ~21 cu ft hold struggles with a full-size stroller plus groceries.
Even the base Core gets City Safety AEB with pedestrian/cyclist/animal detection, BLIS with steer assist and lane keeping; NHTSA five stars overall. Pilot Assist lane centering costs extra below Ultimate.
Excellent front seats and a quiet cabin, but a flat rear bench, rear vents only, and a small cargo hold limit four-up luggage on longer trips.
The B5's early torque and 48V starter-generator make stop-and-go smooth, and the commanding seating position eases traffic, though low-speed take-up from the 8-speed can hesitate.
26 MPG combined on premium-recommended fuel means about $3,150 a year per EPA — on the expensive side for the class.
A sub-175-inch footprint, square hood, tall glasshouse and a 37.4-ft turning circle make it easy to thread through the city; the 360 camera is limited to upper trims.
Not a work vehicle — no bed and a small hold — though a 3,500-lb tow rating lifts it to the top of the low band.
Luxury interior with no wear-friendly trim, a turbocharged four with added 48V hybrid complexity, and no fleet presence.
No 120V outlet, no upfit ecosystem and carpeted surfaces; only consumer cargo hooks, divider and roof rails.
Superb front seats and a quiet cabin, but a ~370-mile range from the 14.3-gal tank and Pilot Assist standard only on Ultimate limit its touring credentials.
B5 AWD, roughly 8.3 in of clearance, roof rails and a 3,500-lb tow rating handle gravel roads and bike racks, but no skid plates or off-road hardware.
The tall, square hold, folding floor divider and underfloor cubby make its limited space usable, and a 60/40 fold gives 57.5 cu ft, but bulky gear is a squeeze.
9Driving ExperienceMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.45C+
Secure and predictable, but tuned for comfort with a fair amount of body roll — less agile than the BMW X1 or Mercedes GLA.
Precise and easy to place, but light with little feedback.
Firm, progressive pedal with no regen blending to muddy it, as the 48V system recuperates only lightly; stopping distances test mid-pack for the class.
The new 2023 B5 mild hybrid makes stop-start restarts smoother than the old T5 and is seamless at cruise, but a beat of turbo lag and hesitant low-speed shifts remain.
Sound insulation keeps the 2.0-liter four subdued at cruise, but it turns coarse when worked hard.
Mid-pack for a subcompact luxury SUV — tighter than the BMW X1, level with the GLA.
High, upright seating, deep glass and power seats with memory give excellent sightlines and fit a wide range of drivers; touchscreen-buried climate controls cost points.
The B5's 247 hp and 6.1-s 0–60 give it decent pace, but numb steering and a comfort-tuned chassis mean it rarely invites the long way home.
10Value & Market PositionOne of the XC40's strongest categories.2.77B-
Even the B4 Core gets the full City Safety AEB suite, blind-spot and cross-traffic alert, lane keeping, LED headlights, the 12.3-inch digital cluster and the new Google built-in infotainment with wireless CarPlay, plus 3 years of included maintenance. Comfort and convenience items (panoramic roof, heated wheel, power tailgate, Pilot Assist on lower trims) are pushed to Plus/Ultimate or packages, keeping it short of the top band.
A ~$37K start and ~$43.8K for the volume B5 AWD Plus undercut the 2023 BMW X1 and Mercedes GLA/GLB while bundling a 247-hp AWD powertrain, a strong safety suite and included maintenance. Fair-to-good value, held back by below-average resale and mid-pack space and efficiency.
For 2023 the gas XC40 offers two engines (B4 194 hp, B5 247 hp), FWD or AWD, three trims (Core/Plus/Ultimate) and Bright/Dark design themes — ten configurations from $36,350 to $46,500 — with the Recharge Pure Electric sold under the same nameplate. Well-spaced, though narrower than a mainstream crossover lineup.
The XC40 sold about 28,000 units in the US in 2023, Volvo's third-best seller behind XC90 and XC60 in a year Volvo's US volume rose 26%. A steady mid-pack performer in the subcompact luxury class, behind the BMW X1 and Mercedes GLB/GLA leaders.
Volvo's safety-and-Scandinavian-design image is distinctive and earns real loyalty, but it trails BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Audi in aspirational pull and in the badge premium that supports resale.
MY2023 arrived as post-shortage inventory was still recovering, so discounts were modest early in the model year; Volvo's subvented lease programs and loyalty/conquest offers became more common through 2023 as stock normalized. Occasional-to-moderate incentives rather than deep discounting.
2023 is the XC40's facelift year: new front styling and headlights, an all-mild-hybrid powertrain range and the new Android Automotive/Google built-in infotainment. The CMA platform dates to MY2019, so it is mid-cycle — freshly updated but not a new generation.
The XC40 generation launched as 2018 European Car of the Year and 2019 North American Utility of the Year, and the 2023 refresh was well received for its design, comfortable seats, safety tech and improved infotainment, though reviewers note a tight rear seat/cargo area and touch-heavy controls. Generally ranked in the upper half of the class rather than the outright pick.
