The verdict
A mixed-report subcompact luxury suv, strong on safety and held back by space.
The 2025 XC40 is a stylish, safe and easy-to-live-with small luxury SUV, with standard AWD, a 5-star NHTSA rating, excellent Google-based navigation and voice control, and three years of free scheduled maintenance from $41,945. The trade-offs are a small cargo hold (20.4 cu ft), premium-fuel running costs of about $3,150 a year, one 247-hp powertrain, and steep depreciation backed by only a 4-year/50,000-mile warranty. It suits city and suburban drivers who value design and safety over space and driving fun.

Detailed scoring by subject
1Performance & PowertrainOne of the XC40's weakest categories.0.92F
The 2025 XC40 (first generation, post-2023 facelift, carry-over year) is offered only as the B5 AWD — a 2.0L turbo four with a 48V integrated starter-generator rated 247 hp. With the electric version renamed EX40 for 2025, there is no higher-output XC40.
258 lb-ft arriving from 1,800 rpm gives the XC40 usable low-end punch; mid-pack for a subcompact luxury SUV and well short of electric rivals.
Volvo quotes 6.1 s to 60 mph for the B5 AWD, which is competitive with the BMW X1 and Mercedes GLA; Edmunds' instrumented run was slower at 6.8 s, so real-world launches are a little off the claim.
The mild-hybrid 2.0T is quiet and smooth at cruise and has strong low-rpm torque, but reviewers note a beat of hesitation off the line and a gruff note when worked hard. Owners on enthusiast forums also describe the B5 as feeling slower than its numbers.
The 8-speed Geartronic automatic is smooth once moving, but it can stay in too high a gear when quick power is needed, and stop-start restarts can be abrupt. There are no paddle shifters on volume trims.
A 3,500-lb tow rating is competitive for a subcompact luxury SUV — enough for a small camper or a personal-watercraft trailer.
For 2025, AWD is standard on every US XC40 (the front-drive B5 isn't listed). It is a conventional on-demand clutch-pack system with no low range, torque vectoring or locking differentials.
Ground clearance of about 8.3 in, standard AWD and hill descent control handle gravel and snowy trailheads. There are no skid plates, no lockers and no off-road trim, so the XC40 is built for pavement.
The 2025 XC40 has one powertrain: the B5 mild hybrid with AWD. There is no plug-in, full hybrid or second engine, and the battery-electric version is now sold separately as the EX40.
2Efficiency & RangeOne of the XC40's weakest categories.0.88F
The EPA rates the 2025 XC40 B5 AWD at 26 MPG combined. The 48V mild hybrid enables engine-off coasting but never drives the wheels on its own, so the XC40 trails the 28-MPG BMW X1 and Mercedes GLA.
23 MPG city is middling for a subcompact luxury SUV. The mild-hybrid stop-start helps a little, but there is no full-hybrid boost in traffic.
30 MPG highway is decent against the SUV band, though the boxy body and standard AWD leave it a few MPG behind slipperier rivals.
A small 14.2-gallon tank and 26 MPG combined give roughly 369 miles of range, which is short for an SUV.
The EPA estimates $3,150 a year, priced on premium fuel. That is a high energy bill for a subcompact, driven by the premium-fuel assumption and only middling economy.
Volvo recommends 91-octane premium for rated output but allows 87 regular with somewhat reduced performance. That is more flexible than rivals that require premium, but the EPA ratings and cost figure assume premium.
3SafetyThe XC40's best-graded category.3.16B
The 2025 XC40 carries a 5-star NHTSA overall rating with 5-star frontal and side results and a 4-star rollover (16.4% risk), consistent with the rest of this 2019-onward generation.
Strong frontal structure — Good in both small-overlap tests and Good in the updated moderate-overlap test including the rear-passenger metric, where the XC40 was the only small SUV to rate Good in every sub-measure — but the updated side test is only Acceptable (pelvis Marginal) and headlights are untested, so the 2025 XC40 earns no Top Safety Pick. Mostly Good with an Acceptable, no award.
Every 2025 XC40 gets City Safety AEB (vehicle, pedestrian, cyclist, large animal), lane keeping aid, run-off-road and oncoming-lane mitigation, BLIS with steer assist, cross traffic alert with autobrake and rear collision warning. IIHS confirms blind-spot detection, lane departure prevention and rear autobrake as standard. Held in the low 80s because Pilot Assist adaptive cruise is not uniformly standard on the base Core trim.
IIHS rates the standard system Advanced for daytime pedestrian crash prevention, avoiding most crossing-adult scenarios at 12 and 25 mph, but the XC40 has no result under IIHS's newer vehicle-to-vehicle or nighttime pedestrian tests, so the top band (which requires night pedestrian performance) is not earned.
BLIS with Steer Assist and Cross Traffic Alert with autobrake are standard across the range, so both systems actively intervene rather than merely warn — top-band coverage for a subcompact luxury SUV.
Lane Keeping Aid and run-off-road mitigation are standard and Pilot Assist adds lane centering, but reviewers describe Volvo's centering as conservative — it drops out on faded lines and tighter curves and wanders more than the best rivals. Functional rather than class-leading.
Pilot Assist is a full-speed-range adaptive cruise with stop-and-go integrated with steering support, a coherent highway-assist package; it loses points for cautious, occasionally abrupt braking on cut-ins reported by reviewers.
No hands-free highway driving is available on any 2025 XC40 trim; Pilot Assist is hands-on with a torque-sensing steering-wheel check.
LED headlights are standard, with active bending lights and active high beam on upper trims, but IIHS has not rated the 2025 XC40's headlights, so there is no evidence of Good-rated lamps across the range; scored mid-band on hardware alone.
The upright, boxy body with a tall glasshouse and high seating position gives good forward and side sightlines, but the kicked-up beltline and thick D-pillars restrict the rear three-quarter view, with the 360° camera reserved for upper trims.
Two outboard LATCH positions and three top tethers, with square door openings and an upright roofline that ease installs, but the subcompact rear bench makes three-across a squeeze and rear-facing seats crowd the front row.
4Space & ComfortThe XC40's lowest-graded category.0.83F
The 2025 XC40 (first generation, post-2023 facelift, carry-over year) is a two-row, five-seat subcompact SUV on every trim; no third row is offered.
37.6 in of front headroom sits near the bottom of the SUV band; the panoramic moonroof standard on the volume Plus trim eats into clearance. Tall drivers fit but have less room than in an X1 or GLB.
Front legroom is near the bottom of the SUV band, a product of the XC40's short 106.4-in wheelbase; adequate for most drivers but tight on seat travel for the tallest.
The boxy roofline preserves good rear head clearance — the XC40's best passenger-space dimension and better than sloping-roof rivals like the Q3 Sportback or GLA.
36.1 in of rear legroom is competitive for a subcompact luxury SUV — ahead of the Lexus UX and roughly level with the Q3 — though knee room shrinks when tall front occupants slide back.
There is no third row in any XC40 configuration; scored in the low band per the item's rule for two-row SUVs.
20.4 cu ft behind the rear seats is below the 25 cu ft floor of the SUV band and small even for the subcompact luxury class (X1 ~25.7). The tall square opening and multi-purpose floor partition on Plus make it more usable than the number suggests.
57.5 cu ft is just above the SUV band's 55 cu ft floor; par with subcompact luxury rivals but small against SUVs generally.
The XC40's signature packaging trick carries into 2025: the dash-mounted air-ventilated woofer frees oversized laptop-capable door bins, plus a removable console bin, fold-out grocery hook and, on Plus/Ultra, the multi-purpose folding trunk floor/partition. Standout small-item cleverness for the class.
Volvo front seats are repeatedly praised as very comfortable and supportive for long stints; 2025 adds power-folding rear headrests as standard. The rear bench is flatter and short in the cushion, keeping this at the top of the middle band.
Firm and composed but busy: the short wheelbase and stiff suspension amplify bumps, ridges and ruts, made worse by the 19-in wheels on the volume Plus trim and 20s on Ultra. No adaptive dampers are offered.
Wind noise is well suppressed and the mild-hybrid four is muted at cruise, but coarse-surface road roar intrudes more than in larger Volvos and there's no active noise cancellation. Good for the class, not library-quiet.
Dual-zone automatic climate and heated front seats are standard even on Core, the Plus adds an air purifier, and a heated wheel/heated rear seats come via the Climate package. Ventilated seats are not offered and the rear has vents only, capping the score.
5Cost of OwnershipGrades below the middle of the scale.1.21D
The 2025 XC40 is a carry-over year of the 2019-launched, 2023-facelifted first generation, sold only as the B5 AWD mild hybrid; the Core trim opens the range just under $42K with destination, competitive for a subcompact luxury SUV with standard AWD.
Plus is the volume trim; at $46,795 with destination it adds the panoramic roof, heated seats/wheel and power tailgate, and most dealer stock carries metallic paint and a package or two, putting the typical transaction configuration near $48K.
Volvo's 3-year/36,000-mile complimentary scheduled maintenance keeps early-year costs low, so the five-year projection lands mid-pack for the luxury class rather than at the top of it.
Depreciation is the XC40's biggest ownership cost: Edmunds projects a $23,715 loss over five years on a base car, leaving a residual of about 43–44% — near the bottom of the SUV band and below the German rivals.
Volvo's US new-vehicle limited warranty runs 4 years/50,000 miles — a year longer than mainstream brands and level with BMW, Audi and Mercedes-Benz.
Volvo does not offer a longer powertrain warranty in the US; the engine and drivetrain are covered by the same 4-year/50,000-mile term, below the bottom of the 5–10 year band.
Volvo includes 3 years/36,000 miles of factory scheduled maintenance — which BMW, Audi and Mercedes no longer include on their small SUVs — plus 4 years of roadside assistance and a Google built-in services/data trial. Multi-year maintenance with real perks earns the top band.
$48,000 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (43.5% retained, or about $20,880) leaves about $27,120 in depreciation. Add the projected $5,560 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $32,680 in total.
6Reliability & QualityMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.11C
The 2025 gas XC40 (B5 48V mild-hybrid, AWD) is in the seventh year of the 2019+ CMA generation, but sources disagree: J.D. Power rates its quality & reliability as average, while Consumer Reports predicts below-average reliability and lists the XC40 among Volvo's weaker models. The complaint pattern is mostly Android Automotive infotainment and 12V electrical faults, not mechanical. That mix puts it in the mid-band, toward the low end.
Volvo has sat in the lower third of J.D. Power's three-year dependability rankings for several years running, mostly because of electrical and infotainment faults. Consumer Reports' brand rankings put it in the lower half rather than at the bottom, so the score sits on the mid-pack/low boundary.
The 2025 model year has typical recall activity, and nothing touches the gas powertrain, fuel system or structure. The main campaign is a rearview-camera software fault covering 2021–2025 XC40s, fixed by a free over-the-air update. The 25V392 brake-function recall applies to the electric EX40/XC40 Recharge (B-mode/one-pedal drive), not to this gas model. Infotainment software TSBs remain the recurring service theme.
The 2.0L VEA turbo four is a mature engine with about a decade in service and no catastrophic failure mode, and it is paired with a widely shared Aisin 8-speed automatic. Three known maintenance items keep it out of the proven band: scheduled timing-belt replacement, PCV faults and direct-injection carbon buildup. The 48V starter-generator also adds a modest extra failure point.
Reviewers consistently praise the cabin's Scandinavian design, felt-lined door bins, convincing textiles and switchgear, all above the segment norm for the price. It stops short of class-leading because reviewers flag hard plastics in the lower cabin and doors compared with the BMW X1 and Audi Q3.
XC40s from the Ghent plant assemble well, with consistent panel gaps, solid doors and few rattle complaints in long-term tests. It sits below the top band because Volvo's initial-quality standing is below average, though that comes mostly from infotainment and driver-assist complaints rather than assembly defects.
Volvo has roughly 280 US dealers, far fewer than BMW, Mercedes-Benz or Lexus, and most sit on the coasts and in major metros. Owners in rural or interior areas can face long drives for warranty work. Service satisfaction is middling rather than poor.
Parts are priced at European-luxury levels and come mostly through OE and dealer channels, with a thinner independent aftermarket than the German brands have. Maintenance runs above the all-brand average, and the scheduled timing-belt service is a large one-time bill that mainstream rivals don't carry.
7Technology & InfotainmentOne of the XC40's strongest categories.2.49C+
Every 2025 XC40 uses Volvo's 9-inch portrait center display; no larger unit is offered, making it one of the smallest main screens in the subcompact luxury class.
Google built-in is logical and quick with Google Maps and Assistant native, but the small portrait screen routes nearly every function — climate, driver-assist settings, even cabin lighting — through touch, which reviewers flag as a daily annoyance.
Apple CarPlay is standard but wired-only via USB-C on the 2025 XC40; wireless projection was promised by OTA but had not arrived for MY25. Android users get Google natively instead, so projection is present but not wireless.
Google Assistant and native Google Maps (also shown in the driver display) are the class benchmark for natural-language voice and live-traffic navigation; digital services are included for four years.
The 13-speaker Harman Kardon premium system is good but reserved for the top Ultra trim; the volume Core/Plus carry an adequate 8-speaker system, and Bowers & Wilkins is never offered on XC40.
A 12.3-inch full-digital driver display is standard on all trims and shows Google Maps navigation; layouts are limited compared with Audi's Virtual Cockpit.
Google built-in XC40s receive whole-vehicle software OTA updates covering infotainment and vehicle functions; the slow non-delivery of promised wireless CarPlay on this aging platform tempers the feature-adding record.
The Volvo Cars app provides remote lock/unlock, locate, remote start and climate preconditioning, and digital key on the connected-services package, but owners frequently report slow command response.
Wireless phone charging is standard even on Core, with USB-C ports front and rear, but port count is modest and there is no household 120V outlet.
Keyless entry with push-button start and app-based remote start are available, plus a power tailgate with hands-free on upper trims and phone-as-key through the Volvo app; hands-free liftgate and full keyless entry are not uniformly standard on Core.
Rear camera and rear sensors are standard, and the volume Plus trim adds a surround-view camera with front and side sensors, so 360 coverage is widely available; image resolution trails newer BMW/Mercedes systems.
No head-up display is offered on any 2025 US XC40 trim; the 12.3-in cluster is the only driver display. Scored in the 'not offered' band.
8Use-Case FitMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.95C-
Square door openings and a tall roofline make car-seat installs easier than in sloped-roof rivals, and 2025's standard power-folding rear headrests help visibility with kids aboard. The small 20.4 cu ft hold and short wheelbase (rear-facing seats crowd the front) are the compromises.
Every trim, including Core, gets City Safety AEB with pedestrian/cyclist detection, BLIS with steer assist and cross-traffic alert with autobrake, plus a 5-star NHTSA rating. Held below the top of the band because IIHS awarded no 2025 TSP (side test Acceptable) and Pilot Assist is Ultra-only.
Front seats are long-haul excellent, but the rear bench is flat, gets vents only, and 20.4 cu ft behind the seats won't take four people's luggage; the firm ride adds fatigue. Fine for a weekend, tight for a week.
Light steering, a commanding seating position and 258 lb-ft from 1,800 rpm make traffic easy, but off-the-line hesitation, rough stop/start and touchscreen-only climate controls are daily irritations.
The AWD-only B5 on premium fuel is an expensive commuter, with no hybrid or PHEV XC40 for 2025 (the EV became the separate EX40). Volvo's complimentary scheduled maintenance is a modest offset.
Subcompact footprint, light steering, 37.4-ft turning circle and an upright greenhouse make it easy in the city, and the volume Plus trim adds surround-view cameras plus front and side sensors.
Not a work vehicle — small enclosed cargo and no work configuration — but the 3,500-lb tow rating is useful for a subcompact luxury SUV, lifting it to the top of the low band.
Luxury-oriented interior (leather on Plus), turbo four with 48V mild-hybrid complexity, and no fleet track record make it a poor fit for hard use.
No 120V outlet, no upfit ecosystem and carpeted surfaces; consumer cargo aids (folding floor partition on Plus, bag hooks) plus roof rails and an available hitch are all it offers.
Superb front seats and good wind isolation, but a firm ride, coarse-surface road noise, modest range from a small tank, and Pilot Assist reserved for the Ultra trim limit it as a tourer.
Standard AWD for 2025, roof rails and a 3,500-lb tow rating handle gravel roads, bikes and small trailers, but there are no terrain modes, skid plates or outlets for camping.
Clever storage and a square hold make the space usable, with roof rails and a hitch extending it, but 20.4/57.5 cu ft and a 60/40 fold make bulky gear a squeeze.
9Driving ExperienceMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.37C+
Secure, predictable and composed thanks to firm suspension, but tall and comfort-biased with more roll than a BMW X1 and handling blunted by dull steering. Mid-band for subcompact luxury SUVs.
Light, consistent and well isolated, which helps at parking speeds, but nearly devoid of feedback — the XC40's weakest dynamic trait.
Firm, progressive pedal with no regen blending to muddy it (the 48V system recuperates lightly); stopping distances test mid-pack for the class.
Smooth at cruise with strong low-rpm torque, but a beat of hesitation off the line, an 8-speed that lingers in high gears when quick power is needed, and abrupt stop/start restarts hold it back. Consistent with cat1 refinement (66) and transmission (62).
The 2.0T is subdued at cruise but turns gruff when worked hard; audible but inoffensive.
37.4 ft is mid-pack for a subcompact luxury SUV, tighter than the BMW X1; reviewers note a small turning circle that eases parking.
High, upright seating with excellent sightlines and supportive power seats suit most body sizes, but nearly all controls — climate included — live in the touchscreen, and Core's passenger seat is manual.
Characterful and pleasant to sit in, but numb steering, comfort-tuned chassis and hesitant gearbox mean it never invites the long way home; the X1 and Q3 are the drivers' picks.
10Value & Market PositionOne of the XC40's strongest categories.2.71B-
Every 2025 XC40 comes with AWD, the 247-hp mild-hybrid B5, City Safety AEB, BLIS, Cross Traffic Alert, LED headlights, a 12.3-in digital cluster, Google built-in with wireless CarPlay, and 3 years/36,000 miles of scheduled maintenance. Core is de-contented on comfort items (panoramic roof, heated seats/wheel, power tailgate, Pilot Assist live on Plus/Ultra or packages), which keeps it out of the top band.
At $41,945 with AWD standard, the XC40 undercuts or matches the BMW X1 and Mercedes GLA while adding included maintenance and a deep safety suite; the 9-in center screen, no head-up display, and weak ~43% five-year retention pull the overall value case back to fair-plus rather than standout.
Three well-spaced trims (Core/Plus/Ultra, each with Bright or Dark themes) span about $42K–$51K with package flexibility, but there is only one powertrain and drivetrain — no FWD entry car, no plug-in hybrid, no performance version; the EV is now a separate EX40 model.
The XC40 remains one of Volvo's core US sellers and a recognized nameplate in the subcompact luxury class, but it trails the BMW X1 and Mercedes GLA/GLB in share and its volume is drifting down late in the generation as Volvo's EX30/EX40 split demand.
Volvo's safety-and-Scandinavian-design identity earns genuine loyalty and keeps it on luxury shoppers' lists, but it sits a tier below BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Audi in aspirational pull and badge-driven residuals, as the XC40's weak resale shows.
The 2025 XC40 has carried substantial support: low-APR captive financing, cash allowances, lease bonuses and loyalty cash, so buyers routinely transact well under MSRP without fire-sale pricing.
In its seventh US model year, the XC40 is mid-to-late cycle: the CMA-platform car launched for MY2019 and was facelifted for MY2023 (new front end, Google-based infotainment on the mild hybrid), but the architecture and 9-in screen now trail the redesigned BMW X1 (MY2023) and newer rivals.
Reviewers still rate the XC40 near the top of its class — U.S. News gave the 2025 model 9.0/10 and ranks it among the top three luxury subcompact SUVs, and Car and Driver has named it an Editors' Choice every year since 2018 — on top of its 2018 European Car of the Year and 2019 North American Utility of the Year wins. It is praised for design, cabin and practicality, less so for driving fun and its small screen, so it rarely wins comparison tests outright.
