The verdict

A struggling sports car, strong on driving and held back by efficiency.

The 2017 Corvette is one of the great performance bargains of its era: a 455-hp V8 that hits 60 mph in 3.7 seconds, 1.0g-plus cornering grip, and a base price of $56,445 — money that buys you far less car almost anywhere else. It is also a strict two-seater with no automatic emergency braking, no blind-spot monitoring, 19 combined MPG on required premium fuel, and about $4,100 a year in gas. Buy it because you want to drive it, not because you need it to do anything else. The upside is that it holds its value better than almost any car sold in America — roughly 72.5% of MSRP after five years — so the fun is cheaper to own than the fuel bills suggest.

Strengths

  • Sports-car speed at a family-sedan-plus price
  • Genuinely thrilling to drive, not just fast in a straight line
  • A V8 that feels effortless everywhere

What holds it back

  • Essentially no modern driver-assistance technology
  • Expensive to feed
  • Two seats, full stop — no family duty of any kind

Transmission behavior82
#5 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

The 7-speed manual's rev-matching downshift logic and the optional 8-speed automatic's quick, well-timed paddle-shift behavior were both well received; neither hunts or shows notable hesitation.

AWD/4WD availability5
#12 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

The C7 Corvette is rear-wheel drive only across the entire 2017 lineup (Stingray, Grand Sport, Z06) — no AWD option existed until the later C8 generation.

Powertrain lineup breadth42
#6 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

Two distinct gas V8 states of tune are offered across the trim range — the naturally aspirated 455-460 hp LT1 (Stingray/Grand Sport) and the supercharged 650 hp LT4 (Z06) — but there is no hybrid, turbo-four, or electrified option; it's V8-or-bigger-V8.

NHTSA overall rating
Not independently crash tested by NHTSA (low production volume)
50/100
#4 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

NHTSA has never published an overall star rating for the C7 Corvette (2014-2019), including the 2017 model year; the Corvette's relatively low sales volume keeps it outside NCAP's routine testing selection. Value is an inferred mid-high estimate based on the C7's hydroformed-aluminum frame and standard multi-airbag protection, not an actual published test result.

IIHS awards & crashworthiness38
#12 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

IIHS has never crash-tested the C7 Corvette and it holds no Top Safety Pick award or published crashworthiness results for the 2017 model year or any other year of this generation. Scored in the untested band since there is no test data, positive or negative, beyond baseline FMVSS compliance.

Standard ADAS suite breadth12
#11 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

The 2017 Corvette offers essentially no active-safety suite on any trim, standard or optional: no AEB, no blind-spot monitoring, no rear cross-traffic alert, and no lane-keep assist (that arrived only with the 2019 model year). The only driver-assist item is warning-only Forward Collision Alert, and even that is not confirmed across all 2017 trims.

Automatic emergency braking performance5
#8 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

No automatic emergency braking exists on the 2017 Corvette on any trim. Where Forward Collision Alert is fitted it is warning-only (visual and audible), with no automatic brake intervention.

Blind-spot & cross-traffic coverage8
#12 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are absent from the 2017 Corvette lineup entirely, not merely gated to upper trims; owners are limited to mirrors and the standard rear camera. Reviewers and owners specifically note the C7's low, wide rear quarters made blind-spot hardware impractical to package.

Lane keeping & centering8
#9 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

No lane-departure warning or lane-keep assist hardware is fitted or offered on the 2017 Corvette; that feature was not added to the Corvette lineup until the 2019 model year.

Adaptive cruise & highway assist18
#6 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

The 2017 Corvette has conventional, non-adaptive cruise control as a standard feature but no radar-based adaptive cruise or highway-assist system on any trim.

Hands-free driving availability0
#12 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

No hands-free highway-driving system was available on any Corvette during the C7 generation; GM's Super Cruise was Cadillac CT6-exclusive at the time.

Headlight performance48
#6 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

Standard bi-xenon HID headlamps are above-average hardware for the era, but there is no auto high-beam or adaptive lighting on any 2017 trim, and IIHS has never independently rated the Corvette's headlights.

Outward visibility42
#8 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

The C7's low, wide greenhouse and thick rear pillars create real blind spots off the rear quarters, a widely noted trait among owners and reviewers; the standard wide-view rear camera partially compensates but there is no blind-spot backup system.

Cargo/trunk volume
15 cu ft (coupe, hatch-style trunk under rear glass)
50/100
#4 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

The coupe's rear hatch trunk is unusually large for a mid-engine-styled sports car layout, though the convertible drops to 10 cu ft.

In-cabin storage & clever solutions40
#7 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

The C7 cabin is a long-standing weak point for storage: a shallow center console bin, small door pockets, and no glovebox to speak of, though the removable roof panel includes a storage bag and the hatch trunk itself is usefully shaped.

Seat comfort58
#10 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

Standard GT seats are well-cushioned and reasonably comfortable for long stints; the optional Competition seats add aggressive bolstering that some larger drivers find tight, and lateral support is a step below the segment's best.

Ride quality50
#9 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

Base FE1 suspension rides acceptably for a sports car; Z51/Magnetic Ride Control-equipped cars are firmer and busier over broken pavement despite selectable Tour/Sport/Track modes that soften the tune somewhat.

Cabin quietness42
#4 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

Wide performance tires generate notable road roar, and the optional NPP dual-mode exhaust is loud even in its quietest setting — this is a car that announces itself rather than isolates its occupants.

Climate & comfort features55
#7 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

Heated and ventilated seats plus a heated steering wheel are available from 2LT up, and OnStar RemoteLink allows remote-start climate preconditioning, but base 1LT trims lack most of this.

5Cost of OwnershipGrades below the middle of the scale.1.66D
Base MSRP
$56,445 (1LT coupe, 7-speed manual, incl. $995 destination)
0/100
#9 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

1LT is the entry equipment group for the Stingray coupe; base price is $55,450 before the separate $995 destination charge.

Volume-Trim Price
$58,170 (1LT coupe, 8-speed automatic, as typically equipped)
0/100
#9 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

1LT was both the base and volume equipment group — 52% of 2017 Stingray coupe buyers chose 1LT over 2LT or 3LT — and the 8-speed automatic (a $1,725 option over the standard 7-speed manual) outsells the manual industry-wide.

5-Year Maintenance & Repair Cost
~$6,500–7,500 est. over 5 years (scheduled maintenance + repairs)
31/100
#9 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

RepairPal puts the C7 Corvette's average annual repair cost at $737 with a high (22%) probability of severe repairs versus a 12% average, and a naturally aspirated performance V8 with premium fuel, low-profile tires and specialty fluids runs above-average scheduled-maintenance costs on top of that — pushing the 5-year estimate toward the upper-middle of the segment band.

5-Year Resale Value Retention
~72.5% of MSRP retained after 5 years
100/100
#1 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

iSeeCars' multi-year Corvette study puts average 5-year depreciation at 27.5% against a 38.8% average-vehicle figure, placing the Corvette among the best-retaining vehicles sold in the US; the figure is a nameplate-level aggregate rather than 2017-specific.

Complimentary maintenance & perks55
#3 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

Chevrolet's Complete Care program covers two oil/filter changes plus tire rotations within the first 24 months/24,000 miles, plus 5-year/60,000-mile 24-hour roadside assistance and a 3-month OnStar trial — a short included-maintenance window and basic roadside/connected-service perks, not a multi-year program with meaningful extras.

Effective 5-Year Ownership Cost
$22,997 (≈$15,997 depreciation + $7,000 maintenance)
66/100
#7 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

$58,170 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (72.5% retained, or about $42,173) leaves about $15,997 in depreciation. Add the projected $7,000 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $22,997 in total.

6Reliability & QualityMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.50C+
Predicted reliability60
#11 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

Consumer Reports rated the 2017 Corvette's predicted reliability as about average for the model year, with owner-reported electrical/accessory gripes (cruise control, warning lights) pulling it down from a top-tier result; RepairPal's aggregate reliability score for the Corvette nameplate is also low relative to other cars.

Brand reliability track record68
#5 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

Chevrolet placed 8th of all brands in J.D. Power's 2017 Vehicle Dependability Study with 142 problems per 100 vehicles, beating the 156 industry average but well short of the top 5 (BMW led at 139).

Recall & TSB history56
#8 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

The 2017 Corvette carries two notable safety-system recalls: an airbag Sensing and Diagnostic Module software campaign (2014-2017 cars that hadn't received an earlier fix, risking non-deployment of frontal airbags) and an electric power steering assist failure recall specific to 2017 cars, plus a later steering-gear campaign — recall count is not high but both hit safety-critical systems.

Powertrain durability reputation77
#3 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

The naturally-aspirated 6.2L LT1 V8 (460 hp, Grand Sport) is a direct evolution of GM's long-proven small-block architecture; owner forums note occasional AFM lifter failures and engine-bay noise from direct injection, but no systemic or high-risk failure pattern, and long-term test cars have covered 40,000+ miles largely trouble-free.

Interior material quality72
#8 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

The C7-generation cabin (carried into 2017 largely unchanged) was a marked step up from the C6 — stitched dash and door panels, available Napa leather and carbon-fiber trim on Grand Sport — competitive with rivals at the price though hard plastics remain in some lower-touch zones.

Fit & finish64
#9 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

General assembly quality is solid, but the wide-body Grand Sport is specifically flagged by RepairPal and owner forums for a recurring cracked/bent OE wheel issue, and the SDM/EPS recalls point to some build-process inconsistency for the model year.

Dealer & service network85
#3 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

Chevrolet runs one of the largest dealer networks in the US (~3,000+ dealers), giving Corvette owners dense nationwide service access even though Corvette-specific expertise varies by dealer.

Parts availability & repair cost62
#8 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

GM parts and one of the largest aftermarket ecosystems of any sports car keep parts easy to source, but RepairPal puts average annual repair/maintenance cost at $827-$1,011 for the 2017 model, above the $526 midsize-car average, and repair severity (when needed) runs higher than average.

7Technology & InfotainmentGrades below the middle of the scale.1.03D
Touchscreen size
8 in (Chevrolet MyLink touchscreen, all trims)
12/100
#3 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

The 2017 Stingray carries the same 8-inch MyLink touchscreen across the 1LT/2LT/3LT lineup, unchanged from prior C7 model years.

Infotainment UX & responsiveness55
#9 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

MyLink is a competent, logically laid-out system for its era with a useful mix of physical shortcut buttons and touch controls, but menu response and graphics feel dated next to contemporary rivals.

Wireless CarPlay / Android Auto50
#4 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard via MyLink on the 2017 Corvette, but only as wired connections — wireless projection was not offered on the C7 platform.

Voice control & native navigation45
#8 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

Built-in navigation is available (standard on 2LT/3LT, optional on 1LT) with usable but basic voice command recognition; most owners default to phone-projected maps instead.

Audio system quality65
#8 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

A 9-speaker Bose audio system is standard across the Stingray lineup and is well-regarded for clarity, with a higher-output Performance/CUE-adjacent audio option less relevant here since CUE was not used on Corvette.

Digital instrument cluster50
#2 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

The Stingray's cluster pairs a configurable central LCD display (with distinct Touring/Sport/Track graphics themes) alongside analog-style flanking gauges — a genuine and well-liked feature for the era, but only partially digital rather than a full reconfigurable display.

OTA update capability20
#5 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

The 2017 model predates GM's meaningful over-the-air update rollout; MyLink software and maps require dealer visits or manual USB updates.

Companion app & remote functions55
#1 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

OnStar RemoteLink (subscription-based after the trial period) covers remote start, lock/unlock, vehicle locate and basic diagnostics — solid core functionality for the era, no digital key.

Charging ports & device power35
#4 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

USB-A ports are present for connectivity/charging but factory wireless phone charging was not offered on the C7 Corvette (only available as an aftermarket retrofit), and there is no USB-C.

Keyless & remote access55
#6 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

Keyless entry with push-button start and passive/hands-free access is included on 2LT and 3LT (part of the Keyless Access package availability), with remote start also trim-gated rather than universal.

Camera & parking aids45
#8 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

A rearview camera is standard, and a forward-facing camera aids the low front splitter on higher trims, but there is no 360-degree surround view and factory rear parking sensors are not standard equipment.

Head-up display availability70
#1 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

A color head-up display with a track-focused g-meter/performance readout is standard on 2LT and 3LT and available on 1LT via the Visibility package — a genuinely strong, well-regarded feature that's broadly reachable across the lineup.

8Use-Case FitOne of the Corvette's weakest categories.0.00F
Kid & car-seat practicality2
#14 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

There is no rear seat of any kind on the Corvette coupe, so a car seat cannot be installed at all — this is a categorical failure for family duty, not a mere compromise.

Family safety package15
#11 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

Beyond federally mandated airbags and stability control, the 2017 Corvette offers little in the way of family-relevant ADAS — Side Blind Zone Alert and Rear Cross Traffic Alert are optional extras, and forward collision warning was not offered on this generation.

Family road-trip comfort3
#14 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

With zero rear seats and a 15 cu ft trunk, the Corvette cannot transport a family of four at all, let alone comfortably on a road trip.

Daily driving ease60
#3 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

Surprisingly livable day-to-day for a sports car — the 8-speed automatic is smooth in traffic, Tour mode calms the suspension and exhaust, and visibility forward is decent despite the low nose, though the ride height demands care over driveway aprons and speed bumps.

Commuting cost efficiency30
#11 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

The 6.2L V8 returns modest real-world economy for commuting (roughly city-cycle mid-teens to high-teens MPG), recommends premium fuel, and carries higher sports-car insurance and tire costs.

Parking & maneuverability50
#8 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

A compact overall footprint and a reasonable 37.7 ft turning circle help in tight spaces, offset by a low front splitter that risks scraping on ramps and ill-judged curbs, and no front sensors on base trims.

Work capability2
#14 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

No tow rating, no bed, and a shallow hatch trunk mean the Corvette has essentially no capacity for work hauling of any kind.

Durability for work duty10
#13 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

The LT1 powertrain and chassis are robust, but nothing about the car's design, interior materials, or ownership context relates to fleet/work-duty durability.

Jobsite & upfit practicality2
#14 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

There is no onboard power outlet ecosystem, tie-down provisions, or any upfit/rack accessory market aimed at work use — the Corvette is entirely outside this use case.

Long-distance comfort & range58
#1 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

An 18.5-gallon tank and efficient highway cruising via cylinder deactivation give real touring range, and GT seats plus Tour-mode ride quality make the Stingray a capable mile-eater, though there's no adaptive cruise control to ease driver fatigue.

Outdoor & adventure capability8
#8 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

Minimal ground clearance, an aggressive front splitter, RWD-only layout, and no roof rack or all-terrain provisions make this a pavement-only car with essentially no outdoor utility.

Gear & luggage flexibility35
#6 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

The hatch-style 15 cu ft trunk handles two people's luggage reasonably well and the removable roof panel includes its own storage bag, but there are no rear seats to fold, no roof rails, and no hitch option for additional gear capacity.

9Driving ExperienceThe Corvette's best-graded category.3.27B+
Handling & agility88
#5 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

The Z51-equipped 2017 Stingray, with magnetic ride control and near-50/50 weight distribution, delivers segment-leading grip and body control that instrumented tests repeatedly praised as class-competitive with far pricier machinery.

Steering feel78
#5 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

The electric power steering is precise and well-weighted with good on-center feel, though some reviewers note it gives up a touch of ultimate road feedback compared to the best hydraulic setups in the class.

Braking confidence85
#4 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

Standard 4-piston Brembo calipers are strong and fade-resistant, and the Z51 package's larger slotted rotors further sharpen pedal feel and repeatability under hard use.

Powertrain smoothness & response80
#1 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

The naturally aspirated LT1 V8 delivers immediate, lag-free throttle response, and both the rev-matching 7-speed manual and 8-speed automatic are well-calibrated, with only minor complaints about occasional abrupt automatic downshifts.

Drivetrain noise & vibration78
#1 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

The LT1's V8 exhaust note is loud, especially with the optional NPP dual-mode exhaust in Sport/Track settings, but it's widely regarded as characterful rather than coarse or droning.

Turning circle
37.7 ft curb-to-curb
38/100
#9 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

A middling turning circle for the coupe segment, typical of a wide-track performance car.

Driving position & ergonomics62
#9 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

A low, sporty driving position with good pedal placement for heel-toe work and generous front legroom, though the wide center console and Competition seat bolsters can feel tight for larger drivers, and rearward visibility is compromised by thick pillars and a small back window.

Fun-to-drive factor92
#2 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

Widely regarded by enthusiast press as one of the best value-for-performance sports cars on sale in 2017, with genuine track capability and an engaging, characterful drive.

10Value & Market PositionOne of the Corvette's strongest categories.3.27B+
Standard equipment generosity85
#1 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

Even the base 1LT at $56,445 comes with the 455-hp (460 hp with performance exhaust) 6.2L LT1 V8, Z51-width 19/20-inch wheels standard for 2017, an 8-inch MyLink touchscreen, keyless open/start and 4G LTE Wi-Fi — content that rival sports cars charge tens of thousands more to match.

Feature value per dollar87
#3 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

A sub-4-second 0-60 mph V8 sports car starting under $57,000 with destination, spanning up to the 650-hp supercharged Z06 that reviewers compared favorably with exotics costing double or more, is a standout performance-per-dollar proposition in the segment.

Trim & configuration breadth82
#3 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

Three distinct models for 2017 (Stingray, the newly-introduced Grand Sport, and Z06), each in 1LT/2LT/3LT (1LZ/2LZ/3LZ for Z06) trims, coupe or convertible body, manual or 8-speed automatic — a wide, well-spaced range from a $56k daily sports car to an $83k track-focused supercar.

Sales popularity & market acceptance55
#7 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

32,782 units built for MY2017 kept the Corvette the best-selling true sports car in America, but US sales were visibly declining through the year — down roughly 17% over the first nine months and by over 40% in some individual months versus 2016 — as the C7 generation aged, a steady-but-softening mid-pack result rather than a sales leader on an upswing.

Brand desirability & image83
#5 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

America's sports car since 1953, with a dedicated owner community, a museum in Bowling Green, KY, and strong enthusiast loyalty — an aspirational, beloved domestic performance nameplate.

Deals & incentive availability62
#4 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

GM offered a stackable mix of a $2,000 loyalty bonus (no trade-in required, transferable within a household) and a $1,000 bonus-tag credit on aged inventory, for up to roughly $8,000 in combined savings during 2017 — meaningful but not desperation-level incentives, consistent with softening but not collapsing demand.

Model freshness58
#8 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

2017 is year four of the C7 generation (2014-2019) — mid-cycle rather than new, though the lineup was refreshed with the newly-introduced Grand Sport trim and Z51-width wheels standardized on base Stingrays, keeping it current without being cutting-edge; a redesign (C8) was still two-plus years off and not yet publicly imminent.

Critical reception & awards85
#4 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

The new-for-2017 Grand Sport was named to Car and Driver's 2017 10Best Cars list — the third time in four years a C7 model made the list — with reviewers praising its Z06-derived chassis and brakes paired with the more usable naturally-aspirated V8.
