The verdict
A struggling sports car, strong on value and held back by efficiency.
The 2022 Corvette Stingray is the third year of the mid-engine C8, and it still does the thing that made the car famous: 490 hp, 465 lb-ft and a Chevrolet-quoted 2.9-second 0-60 with the Z51 package, from a coupe that starts at $63,490. Nothing else at the price handles like it, and resale is among the strongest in the performance world. The costs are real, though — 19 MPG combined on required premium works out to about $4,100 a year in fuel, Edmunds projects roughly $15,559 in five-year maintenance and repairs, and Consumer Reports rated 2022 predicted reliability 2 out of 5. It also has essentially no driver-assistance tech: no automatic emergency braking, no lane keeping and no adaptive cruise, none of which arrive until the 2024 model year. Buy it as a second car for the driving; don't buy it as a do-everything car.
Jump to scoresStrengths
- Supercar acceleration at a sports-car price
- Handling that ranks with the best at any price
- Exceptional value and a segment-leading sales record
What holds it back
- Fuel costs are close to the worst in the class
- Almost no driver-assistance safety tech
- Expensive to keep, with short warranty coverage

Detailed scoring by subject
1Performance & PowertrainOne of the Corvette's strongest categories.3.10B
The 2022 Corvette lineup is Stingray-only — the LT6-powered Z06 didn't arrive until the 2023 model year and the E-Ray hybrid until 2024 — so 490 hp is the only figure on offer, and it sits near the top of the coupe band regardless.
465 lb-ft from the naturally aspirated 6.2L V8 exceeds the top of the coupe normalization band (450 lb-ft) on its own, delivered without turbo lag across a broad rev range.
Chevrolet's quoted 2.9-second 0–60 for the Z51-equipped Stingray beats the 3.0-second floor of the coupe band, pinning the item at the top — the mid-engine layout and dual-clutch launch control put supercar-level acceleration into a sub-$70k car.
The naturally aspirated LT2 has no turbocharger to lag — throttle response is immediate and linear from idle, and cylinder deactivation keeps it civil when cruising rather than hunting for boost.
The Tremec eight-speed dual-clutch is decisive and quick once moving, but the C8's well-documented low-speed abruptness — jerky, hesitant behavior in parking-lot and stop-and-go maneuvers — was still a live complaint through the 2022 model year.
The entire 2022 Corvette lineup — there being only the Stingray — is rear-wheel drive with no all-wheel-drive option anywhere in the range; the AWD E-Ray hybrid didn't exist until the 2024 model year.
2022 is a single-powertrain model year: every Corvette sold is the same 6.2L LT2 V8 paired with the same 8-speed DCT — the flat-plane-crank Z06 didn't arrive until 2023 and the hybrid E-Ray until 2024, so there is no electrified or higher-output alternative to choose from.
2Efficiency & RangeThe Corvette's lowest-graded category.0.00F
19 MPG combined sits barely above the 18 MPG floor of the coupe band — cylinder deactivation and a tall top gear help, but 6.2 naturally aspirated liters in a car this quick leave it near the bottom of the gas-coupe field, and there is no other 2022 Corvette powertrain to pull the average up.
16 MPG city is exactly at the floor of the coupe city band and scores 0 — the LT2's cylinder deactivation does little in stop-and-go work, where the car's mass and gearing dominate.
24 MPG highway sits exactly at the floor of the coupe highway band — the 2022 rating is a point lower than later model years, which picked up a highway MPG improvement from a subsequent EPA re-certification.
An 18.5-gallon tank at 19 MPG combined gives 352 miles — short of the 400-plus a grand-touring coupe manages, though real-world highway range stretches noticeably farther.
$4,100 a year is well above the $3,200 top of the coupe cost band, a product of 19 MPG combined compounded by a mandatory premium-fuel surcharge — EPA flags it as $9,250 more than an average new vehicle over five years.
Premium is required, not merely recommended, on the 2022 Corvette's only powertrain, with no regular-fuel or plug-in alternative to sidestep it — squarely in the bottom band.
3SafetyGrades near the bottom of the scale.0.19F
NHTSA has never published an overall, frontal, side or rollover star rating for the C8 Corvette in any model year, including 2022 — a two-seat sports car at this production volume falls outside routine NCAP vehicle selection. Estimated at 4 stars from the C8's aluminum spaceframe and the long front crush zone the mid-engine layout affords, but there is no tested figure behind it. Federal FMVSS compliance testing is a separate pass/fail certification exercise and does not produce a star rating.
IIHS has not crash-tested the C8 Corvette in any model year, so there is no Top Safety Pick or TSP+ award and not one individual crashworthiness result on record for the generation. Scored mid-band as untested-without-published-concerns rather than in the 0-49 band, which the guidance reserves for Marginal/Poor results or untested with known structural doubts. The 2022 model year's one open recall (rear half-shaft assemblies potentially missing ball bearings, a drivetrain/loss-of-power issue) does not touch the occupant-restraint or fuel-system paths that would push this lower.
2022 sits two model years before the C8's safety overhaul, and the gap is total rather than partial: of this item's five named features — AEB, adaptive cruise, lane keeping, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert — only the last two exist on the car at all. Forward Collision Alert, Automatic Emergency Braking, Front Pedestrian and Bicyclist Braking, and Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning are all absent from the 2022 order guide and don't arrive until the 2024 model year; adaptive cruise has never been offered on the C8. Side Blind Zone Alert with Rear Cross Traffic Alert is standard on 2LT and 3LT — which covers the volume trim — but is not orderable on the 1LT. That is one of five features present on the volume trim and no collision-avoidance system of any kind, squarely the 0-49 band's 'significant safety features locked to upper trims or unavailable' rather than the 50-79 band's 'core features standard'.
There is no automatic emergency braking on the 2022 Corvette to evaluate — no AEB, no Front Pedestrian Braking and no Forward Collision Alert, on any trim, at any price. The entire system arrives two model years later. The guidance's 0-49 floor describes 'basic or poorly rated AEB'; an outright absence is worse than basic, so this sits at the bottom of that band. Scored rather than omitted, per the requirement to score an absent capability in the low band.
Side Blind Zone Alert with Rear Cross Traffic Alert is standard on the 2LT and the 3LT, and on a car with the C8's rearward sightlines it is the single most valuable assist fitted — GM Authority has called it an absolute necessity on this vehicle. In 2022 it is also the only driver-assistance system on the car. It is alert-only: mirror icons that flash with the turn signal, no active steering or braking intervention and no safe-exit alert. Available on most trims, alert-only, is the middle of the 50-79 band, and the 1LT going without it entirely — not orderable at any price on that trim — keeps it there rather than higher.
The 2022 Corvette has no lane assistance of any kind — no lane departure warning, no lane keep assist and no lane centering, standard or optional, on any trim. Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning is a 2024-model-year addition. Absent lane assistance is the floor of the 0-49 band.
Conventional fixed-speed cruise control only. The 2022 order guide lists a single cruise entry — electronic cruise control with set and resume speed — with no adaptive function, no stop-and-go and no highway assist, and there is no optional path to any of it: the C8's sensor architecture has never supported adaptive cruise. There is also no Following Distance Indicator, the sensor-derived following-time readout that arrives for 2024. The guidance puts basic cruise only in the 0-49 band; with nothing at all above plain cruise, this is the floor of it.
No hands-free highway driving is available on the 2022 Corvette in any trim or package. Super Cruise is GM's strongest card in this item, but it has never been offered on the C8, which carries neither the forward camera and radar suite it depends on nor a driver-attention camera; for 2022 its Chevrolet availability was confined to the full-size trucks and SUVs. A couple of points above zero because the capability exists in the corporate portfolio; it buys a Corvette owner nothing.
All-LED headlamps are standard on every 2022 trim in both body styles, so there is no cheap-trim halogen penalty and the projector hardware itself is competitive. What the 2022 car does not have is any automatic beam control at all: IntelliBeam auto high beams are not on the 2022 order guide in any form and arrive as new standard equipment for 2024, so every high-beam change is manual. There is also no curve-adaptive or matrix-segment beam of the kind the German coupes in this segment fit as standard, and IIHS has never rated Corvette headlights, so there is no Good result to point to. Complete but basic hardware — the lower half of the 50-79 band.
Sharply split, and it has been the C8's signature ergonomic trade since 2020. Forward and quartering vision is a genuine strength of the mid-engine layout — the short front deck, low cowl and forward-set windshield give a view over the nose no front-engine GT in this segment matches. Rearward it is among the worst in the class: the engine deck, thick flying buttresses and a shallow letterbox rear window produce a blind zone owners routinely describe as the worst they have encountered, severe enough that aftermarket blind-spot mirrors are a common first purchase. Camera compensation is the saving grace — the Rear Camera Mirror replaces the mirror view outright with a wide-angle feed — but it is standard only on 2LT and 3LT, and the front curb-view camera is a paid option. Scored a notch below the 2023/2024 cars for a 2022-specific reason: the semiconductor shortage forced a portion of 2022 production (roughly late January through mid-April 2022) to ship without Rear Park Assist entirely, an earlier and more acute version of the same chip-shortage deletion that recurred in 2023.
4Space & ComfortGrades below the middle of the scale.1.40D
The C8 Corvette is a fixed 2-seat mid-engine sports car with no rear seats in any trim, well below the coupe segment's 4-5 seat norm.
Front headroom is in line with typical low-slung sports-coupe packaging.
Front legroom sits mid-pack for the coupe segment despite the compact cabin.
The mid-engine layout's dual front/rear trunks total a genuinely useful 12.6 cu ft for the segment, enough for two golf bags or a couple of carry-ons.
The dual-trunk arrangement is a clever mid-engine-era Corvette novelty, but cabin storage itself is sparse: a small locking glovebox and a single console cubby are about it.
Standard GT2 sport seats are well-bolstered and praised for supportive, all-day comfort; the optional Competition Sport seats trade some comfort for tighter lateral hold.
Magnetic Ride Control (standard with Z51/FE4) delivers a notably compliant ride for a mid-engine sports car, with Tour mode singled out as class-leading composure.
Tour mode is notably refined and quiet for the segment, but performance-summer tires and the optional dual-mode exhaust add road and engine noise at speed in Sport/Track modes.
Heated/ventilated GT2 seats and a heated steering wheel are available starting on 2LT, but are not standard on the base 1LT.
5Cost of OwnershipOne of the Corvette's weakest categories.0.00F
Entry 1LT coupe MSRP for MY2022, base price plus GM's model-year-opening destination charge.
2LT is widely cited by reviewers (Edmunds, Autotrader) as the sweet-spot/volume trim, adding leather, heated/ventilated seats, head-up display and Bose audio over the 1LT.
Edmunds' True Cost to Own 5-year estimate for the 2022 Corvette at 15,000 mi/yr; well above mainstream-coupe norms, consistent with a high-performance V8 sports car (specialty tires, brake wear, dealer-only service).
The Corvette is consistently cited as one of the strongest-retaining performance cars in the market; estimates diverge by source (CarEdge's generic Stingray model implies ~56% retention, other retention studies cite up to 65%), so a mid-range figure is used.
Standard GM limited warranty, unchanged for MY2022 — at the low end of the segment band; rivals like Genesis/Hyundai/Kia and some German brands offer longer coverage.
Standard GM powertrain coverage, at the floor of the segment band.
GM covers only the first required maintenance visit(s) within the initial 12 months (oil change, tire rotation, multi-point inspection) rather than a multi-year plan, but pairs it with a genuinely useful 5-year/60,000-mile roadside assistance program — better than nothing but short of the 3–4 year complimentary-maintenance packages offered by many luxury rivals.
$70,790 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (58% retained, or about $41,058) leaves about $29,732 in depreciation. Add the projected $15,559 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $45,291 in total.
6Reliability & QualityGrades below the middle of the scale.1.54D
Consumer Reports gave the 2022 Corvette a predicted reliability rating of 2/5 (overall reliability score of 13/100), naming it one of its 10 Least Reliable Cars of 2022 (5th place) — a clearly below-average signal driven by early-C8 dual-clutch transmission and electrical/build complaints.
Chevrolet placed 10th of ~15 brands in J.D. Power's 2022 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study (behind Cadillac, ahead of MINI) — solidly mid-pack, not top-tier or bottom-third.
GM recalled 2021-2022 Corvettes for rear half-shaft assemblies missing ball bearings, which could cause loss of drive power and increased crash risk (owner notification April 2022) — a genuine powertrain-adjacent safety recall, not a fire/systemic issue, plus persistent early-C8 DCT shudder/calibration TSBs carrying into some 2022 units.
The naturally aspirated LT2 V8 traces to Chevy's proven small-block family and has generally run clean long-term, but the C8's Tremec TR-9080 dual-clutch transmission was new for this platform and had well-documented shudder, hard-shift, and fluid-leak complaints through the early production years before a running update; broken valve springs were a real (if largely resolved) 2020-2021 LT2 issue.
The C8 interior marked a major step up for the nameplate — real metal accents, extensive soft-touch and leather coverage, and a genuinely upscale cabin praised by reviewers relative to prior Corvette generations and its price point.
Panel fit is generally tight and consistent, but rattles are a widely reported and recurring nuisance (dash speaker-grille rattle, door-panel connector buzz, some exterior panel-gap complaints) — competitive but with scattered, well-documented complaints rather than class-leading initial quality.
Chevrolet's dealer network is one of the largest in the US (roughly 3,500-4,000 franchised locations), giving broad geographic coverage, though service-satisfaction feedback is mixed and mid-engine Corvette service expertise is not uniform across every store.
The Corvette has arguably the largest aftermarket support network of any US car, keeping wear-item and cosmetic parts cheap and plentiful, but mid-engine-specific components can be pricier and slower to source through dealers than a typical front-engine pushrod car, and ADAS recalibration adds cost to common repairs like windshield replacement.
7Technology & InfotainmentMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.10C
The vertically-oriented 8-in touchscreen is unchanged across the trim lineup and does not grow on higher trims.
The driver-angled display and simplified menu structure are well-received, though the horizontal 8-in screen is on the small side for the segment's upper end.
Wireless phone projection is standard across the entire lineup, no trim gating.
Native navigation is standard on 2LT/3LT but an extra-cost option on base 1LT, and GM's Infotainment 3 voice recognition is functional but basic enough that most owners default to phone projection.
The standard 10-speaker Bose Premium system is solid; the 14-speaker Bose Performance Series on 2LT/3LT is a genuine step up.
A crisp 12-in fully digital, driver-configurable cluster with drive-mode-specific layouts is standard across the whole range.
GM's OnStar-based system pushes infotainment/map and periodic module updates rather than the comprehensive whole-vehicle OTA cadence of newer EV-era software platforms.
The myChevrolet app covers core remote start/lock/locate functions, but remote start requires specific factory option codes and an active OnStar subscription.
A single-device wireless charging pad and one USB-A plus one USB-C port in the console cubby are adequate but not abundant; there are no rear-row ports given the 2-seat cabin.
Proximity keyless entry and push-button start are standard; remote start is available but tied to specific equipment codes rather than universal across trims.
A standard rearview camera plus an available mirror-integrated rear camera and front/rear parking cameras cover the basics, but no true 360-degree surround-view system is offered on any trim.
Color head-up display is standard on 2LT and 3LT and available as an add-on package on the base 1LT, so it reaches most but not all volume buyers.
8Use-Case FitOne of the Corvette's weakest categories.0.00F
A strict 2-seat cabin with no rear seats or LATCH anchors makes child-seat use impossible.
There is no rear-seat occupant protection to speak of, and the 2022 Corvette does not offer adaptive cruise control or lane-centering assist that a family buyer would expect.
The car seats two and offers 12.6 cu ft of combined trunk space — it cannot transport a family of more than two occupants at all.
The automatic-only (no manual offered) DCT, compliant Tour-mode ride, and light steering make it a genuinely usable daily driver despite its low ride height — a deliberate part of the C8's value pitch versus exotics.
EPA-estimated 16/24/19 mpg city/highway/combined on required premium fuel is well below typical commuter-car economy.
At 76.1 in wide with a low front splitter that needs a lift system for curbs and driveways, the car is trickier than average to park, though the standard rearview camera and a manageable 38 ft turning circle (36.4 ft with Magnetic Ride) help.
No tow rating, no bed, and only 12.6 cu ft combined trunk space — the car has essentially no work capability.
The LT2 V8/DCT drivetrain is mechanically robust, but the low-slung, low-clearance body has no fleet or work-duty use case to draw a durability reputation from.
There are no tie-downs, bed, onboard power outlets, or upfit ecosystem for a mid-engine 2-seat sports car.
Supportive seats and a compliant Tour-mode ride are praised for road trips, but the lack of adaptive cruise control or lane-centering assist increases driver fatigue on long stints, and range is capped by roughly 19 mpg combined.
Rear-wheel drive only, very low ground clearance requiring a front-lift system just for driveways, and no roof rack or towing capability rule out any real outdoor use.
The dual trunks (5.0 cu ft front + 7.2 cu ft rear) swallow golf bags or carry-on luggage reasonably well, but the fixed 2-seat cabin offers no fold-down flexibility and there are no roof rails or hitch options.
9Driving ExperienceOne of the Corvette's strongest categories.3.18B
The mid-engine layout is widely rated among the best-handling cars reviewers have driven at this price, with sharp turn-in and strong grip; some understeer emerges only at the very limit.
The electric power steering is accurate, naturally weighted, and repeatable, though it trades some tactile road feel for that consistency.
Standard Brembo brakes deliver strong, fade-resistant stopping power with a firm, confidence-inspiring pedal in instrumented tests.
The Tremec 8-speed dual-clutch is crisp and quick via the paddles once moving, but owners and reviewers note occasional low-speed hesitation or jerkiness in stop-and-go traffic.
The naturally aspirated LT2 6.2L V8 has a widely praised exhaust character, with the optional dual-mode performance exhaust adding drama without excessive droning in Tour mode.
Turning circle is about average for the coupe segment band, tightening slightly with the Magnetic Ride option.
The low, well-bolstered driving position and redesigned squared-off wheel with a console-mounted switch bank are praised, but the low seat height, wide sills, and mid-engine roofline compromise ingress/egress and rear visibility.
Widely cited by enthusiast press as the performance-per-dollar benchmark of its era, with genuine driver engagement and character that enthusiasts actively recommend.
10Value & Market PositionThe Corvette's best-graded category.3.26B+
Even the base 1LT coupe includes the 490-495hp 6.2L LT2 V8, 8-speed dual-clutch, launch control, keyless entry/start, an 8in touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, and driver-configurable displays — content that rivals like Porsche 718/911 and BMW M models charge substantial option money for.
The C8's central value proposition — mid-engine supercar performance (0-60 in ~2.9s with the Z51 package, sub-$70k as typically equipped) undercutting European rivals with double or triple the price — is repeatedly cited by every major outlet as class-defining bang-for-buck.
Three trims (1LT/2LT/3LT) across coupe and convertible body styles, plus the Z51 Performance Package and Magnetic Ride Control as key options — a reasonable spread but narrower than rivals: no manual gearbox, no all-wheel drive, and the higher-performance Z06 variant did not arrive until MY2023.
34,510 Corvettes sold in CY2022 (up ~4% YoY), commanding a dominant majority share of the US sports-car segment and selling at or above MSRP amid constrained supply — a clear segment sales leader.
The Corvette nameplate itself carries an outsized halo — America's best-known sports car with a devoted enthusiast following and strong resale/awards track record — even though parent brand Chevrolet is a mainstream marque rather than a premium one.
2022 Corvettes sold at or above MSRP with dealer markups common amid tight, chip-shortage-era supply; GM offered no loyalty/conquest cash and did not introduce its first-ever Corvette financing incentives until mid-2024, so 2022 buyers had essentially no deals available.
2022 is only the third model year of the radically redesigned, mid-engine C8 generation (launched MY2020) — current platform tech with no redesign imminent, and GM had already confirmed the higher-performance Z06 for MY2023, underscoring continued generation-long investment.
The 2022 Corvette Stingray made Car and Driver's 10Best list for the third consecutive year (2020-2022), with reviewers consistently praising build quality, comfort, and value; it remains a top pick in nearly every sports-car comparison test of the era.
