The verdict
A struggling sports car, strong on value and held back by efficiency.
The 2021 Corvette Stingray is a mid-engine, 495-hp sports car that hits 60 mph in as little as 2.9 seconds and started at $59,995 — a genuine giant-killer that undercut rivals costing two or three times as much. It's a strict 2-seater with no meaningful driver-assist tech (no lane keeping, no adaptive cruise, no AEB until 2024) and thirsty at 19 MPG combined on premium fuel, and 2021 landed squarely in the C8's roughest reliability stretch, with Consumer Reports declining to recommend it and a Tremec dual-clutch transmission investigation opened that December. Buy it for the driving experience and the value; go in aware demand was so high in 2021 that most cars sold well over sticker.

Detailed scoring by subject
1Performance & PowertrainOne of the Corvette's strongest categories.3.09B
LT2 6.2L V8 output for the volume Z51-equipped configuration, corroborated across manufacturer specs and independent outlets.
Peak torque for the volume Z51 configuration; base non-Z51 cars are 5 lb-ft lower.
Chevrolet's own 0-60 estimate for the majority-take-rate Z51 configuration; instrumented tests from buff books have matched or beaten it.
The naturally aspirated LT2 V8 has no turbo lag and delivers immediate, linear throttle response praised across reviews; it's one of the most responsive engines in the class.
The Tremec 8-speed dual-clutch shifts crisply and decisively under load or in Track/Sport modes, but multiple reviewers noted low-speed clunkiness and hesitation in stop-and-go/parking-lot driving.
The 2021 Corvette Stingray is rear-wheel drive only; no AWD option existed for this model year (the AWD hybrid E-Ray did not arrive until the 2024 model year).
A single naturally aspirated 6.2L V8 (LT2) is the only powertrain offered across every 2021 Corvette Stingray trim; no turbo, hybrid, or EV variant existed yet.
2Efficiency & RangeThe Corvette's lowest-graded category.0.00F
EPA combined rating for the 6.2L V8/8-speed automatic, the only powertrain offered in 2021.
EPA city rating; the big-displacement NA V8 is thirsty in stop-and-go driving despite cylinder deactivation.
EPA highway rating; cylinder deactivation and tall top-gear ratios help on the highway cycle.
EPA-published combined range on the 18.5-gallon tank at 19 MPG combined.
EPA's standard-assumption annual fuel cost, elevated by both low combined MPG and the premium-fuel requirement.
The LT2 V8's high compression ratio requires premium unleaded; no flex-fuel or regular-fuel option exists on any trim.
3SafetyGrades near the bottom of the scale.0.19F
NHTSA has never published an overall, frontal, side, side-pole or rollover star rating for the C8 Corvette in any model year, including 2021 — a two-seat sports car at this production volume falls outside routine NCAP vehicle selection. Estimated at 4 stars from the C8's aluminum spaceframe and the long front crush zone the mid-engine layout affords, but there is no tested figure behind it. Federal FMVSS compliance testing is a separate pass/fail certification exercise and does not produce a star rating.
IIHS has not crash-tested the C8 Corvette in any model year, so there is no Top Safety Pick or TSP+ award and not one individual crashworthiness result on record for the generation. Scored mid-band as untested-without-published-concerns rather than in the 0-49 band, which the guidance reserves for Marginal/Poor results or untested with known structural doubts. Placed a point below the 2022/2023 treatment because 2021 is the one model year carrying its own airbag-system recall — a software fault that could illuminate the airbag malfunction indicator light on alternating ignition cycles — even though the fault is a false-warning/diagnostic-communications issue rather than an actual restraint-performance defect, which keeps it from moving the score further.
2021 is the C8's second model year, three years before the safety overhaul, and the gap is total rather than partial: of this item's five named features — AEB, adaptive cruise, lane keeping, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert — only the last two exist on the car at all. Forward Collision Alert, Automatic Emergency Braking, Front Pedestrian and Bicyclist Braking, and Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning are all absent from the 2021 order guide and don't arrive until the 2024 model year; adaptive cruise has never been offered on the C8. Side Blind Zone Alert with Rear Cross Traffic Alert is standard on 2LT and 3LT — which covers the volume trim — but is not orderable on the 1LT. That is one of five features present on the volume trim and no collision-avoidance system of any kind, squarely the 0-49 band's 'significant safety features locked to upper trims or unavailable' rather than the 50-79 band's 'core features standard'.
There is no automatic emergency braking on the 2021 Corvette to evaluate — no AEB, no Front Pedestrian Braking and no Forward Collision Alert, on any trim, at any price. The entire system arrives three model years later. The guidance's 0-49 floor describes 'basic or poorly rated AEB'; an outright absence is worse than basic, so this sits at the bottom of that band. Scored rather than omitted, per the run's instruction to score an absent capability in the low band.
Side Blind Zone Alert with Rear Cross Traffic Alert is standard on the 2LT and the 3LT, and on a car with the C8's rearward sightlines it is the single most valuable assist fitted — GM Authority has called it an absolute necessity on this vehicle. In 2021 it is also the only driver-assistance system on the car. It is alert-only: mirror icons that flash with the turn signal, no active steering or braking intervention and no safe-exit alert. Available on most trims, alert-only, is the middle of the 50-79 band, and the 1LT going without it entirely — not orderable at any price on that trim — keeps it there rather than higher.
The 2021 Corvette has no lane assistance of any kind — no lane departure warning, no lane keep assist and no lane centering, standard or optional, on any trim. Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning is a 2024-model-year addition. Absent lane assistance is the floor of the 0-49 band.
Conventional fixed-speed cruise control only. The 2021 order guide lists a single cruise entry — electronic cruise control with set and resume speed — with no adaptive function, no stop-and-go and no highway assist, and there is no optional path to any of it: the C8's sensor architecture has never supported adaptive cruise, and multiple sources confirm ACC was not offered on the 2021 model. There is also no Following Distance Indicator, which arrives for 2024. The guidance puts basic cruise only in the 0-49 band; with nothing at all above plain cruise, this is the floor of it.
No hands-free highway driving is available on the 2021 Corvette in any trim or package. Super Cruise is GM's strongest card in this item, but it has never been offered on the C8, which carries neither the forward camera and radar suite it depends on nor a driver-attention camera; for 2021 its Chevrolet availability was confined to the full-size trucks and SUVs. A couple of points above zero because the capability exists in the corporate portfolio; it buys a Corvette owner nothing.
All-LED headlamps are standard on every 2021 trim in both body styles, so there is no cheap-trim halogen penalty and the projector hardware itself is competitive. What the 2021 car does not have is any automatic beam control at all: IntelliBeam auto high beams are not on the 2021 order guide in any form and arrive as new standard equipment for 2024, so every high-beam change is manual. There is also no curve-adaptive or matrix-segment beam of the kind the German coupes in this segment fit as standard, and IIHS has never rated Corvette headlights, so there is no Good result to point to. Complete but basic hardware — the lower half of the 50-79 band.
Sharply split, and it has been the C8's signature ergonomic trade since 2020. Forward and quartering vision is a genuine strength of the mid-engine layout — the short front deck, low cowl and forward-set windshield give a view over the nose no front-engine GT in this segment matches. Rearward it is among the worst in the class: the engine deck, thick flying buttresses and a shallow letterbox rear window produce a blind zone owners routinely describe as the worst they have encountered, severe enough that aftermarket blind-spot mirrors are a common first purchase. Camera compensation is the saving grace — the Rear Camera Mirror replaces the mirror view outright with a wide-angle feed — but it is standard only on 2LT and 3LT, and the front curb-view camera is a paid option. Scored above the 2022/2023 treatment because 2021 predates the chip-shortage deletion of Rear Park Assist: GM did not begin pulling RPA from Corvette production until December 2021 builds (affecting 2022/2023 model-year cars), so 2021 Corvettes shipped with Rear Park Assist intact wherever ordered.
4Space & ComfortGrades below the middle of the scale.1.17D
The C8 Corvette is a mid-engine 2-seat sports car with no rear seating at all, unlike some rivals that offer token 2+2 seating.
Standard front headroom for the coupe with removable roof panel installed.
Generous legroom for a sports car thanks to the mid-engine layout freeing up footwell space.
Total cargo capacity is split into a front trunk and a rear trunk behind the mid-mounted engine.
The console cubby houses USB ports and a phone tray (wireless charging on 2LT/3LT), and the dual front/rear trunk split is a clever mid-engine solution, but overall in-cabin storage is sparse — no rear seats, small door pockets, and a narrow console shelf.
GT2 bucket seats (standard on 2LT/3LT, optional 1LT) are well bolstered and widely praised as comfortable for daily driving and long stints, a step up from the more track-focused Competition Sport seats.
Reviewers repeatedly note the C8 rides more comfortably than its performance suggests, especially with the adjustable Magnetic Ride Control damping, though the low-profile tires transmit some harshness on rough pavement.
With the V8 mounted directly behind the cabin and wide low-profile performance tires, road and powertrain noise intrude at highway speed — the mid-engine layout trades quietness for that soundtrack.
Heated and ventilated seats are standard on 2LT/3LT and available on 1LT, with dual-zone automatic climate control standard across the range, though rear climate/remote pre-conditioning don't apply to a 2-seat car.
5Cost of OwnershipOne of the Corvette's weakest categories.0.00F
Entry 1LT coupe MSRP including destination for the 2021 model year, with the mid-year price bump noted.
2LT is the volume trim for content/price balance, and GM reported the Z51 package on a majority of 2021 orders, so as-typically-equipped pricing includes it.
RepairPal's measured annual average ($737, driven by infrequent but severe repairs) projects to roughly $3,700 over 5 years; CarEdge's separate maintenance ($8,179)+repair ($2,746) estimate runs much higher but is built on an $82,220 assumed purchase price well above the 2021 Stingray's MSRP, so it's discounted as less representative of this model year.
KBB's Best Resale Value Awards project 49.5% five-year retention for the 2021 Corvette, naming it the top Sports Car for resale; real-world 2026 asking prices on 2021 cars (~$53–65K against a ~$60–67K MSRP) corroborate strong retention for a sports car.
Standard GM bumper-to-bumper coverage, at the low end of the segment band.
Standard GM powertrain coverage, at the floor of the segment band.
No complimentary scheduled maintenance is included, but GM bundles 5-year/60,000-mile roadside assistance and courtesy transportation with the warranty, plus a 3-month OnStar connected-services trial — basic roadside coverage with a slightly longer duration than typical, short of any real maintenance plan.
$73,290 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (49.5% retained, or about $36,279) leaves about $37,011 in depreciation. Add the projected $4,200 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $41,211 in total.
6Reliability & QualityMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.23C
2021 is squarely in the C8's roughest reliability stretch: Consumer Reports gave the 2021 Corvette a predicted-reliability score of 2 out of 5 and explicitly declined to recommend it, citing an inconsistent reliability history for the nameplate. That verdict landed the same fall GM was fielding a wave of Tremec TR-9080 transmission complaints on 2020–2021 cars (see 6.1.4), so the two signals reinforce each other rather than conflict. This sits well below the 2023–2026 scores in this dataset (all of which post CR scores of 68 or a recommended 3/5) because the car itself, not just the brand context, was genuinely weaker in its second model year.
The brand's two major scorecards disagreed in this period much as they still do. J.D. Power's 2021 Vehicle Dependability Study placed Chevrolet close to but on the good side of the industry average. Consumer Reports told a different story: for 2021-model-year vehicles Chevrolet ranked 17th of 26 brands with a score of 42, ahead of GMC (18th, 41) and Ford (22nd, 38) but solidly in the lower-middle of the field. That CR figure has proven durable — the 2025 report card still has Chevrolet at 17th/42 — so mid-pack is the right long-run read rather than an artifact of one bad year.
On paper the 2021 model year's official recall record is light: NHTSA's vehicle query returns exactly two campaigns, a software fix for an airbag-malfunction-light false trigger (21V421, remedied by dealer or OTA update, no safety defect in the airbag itself) and a rear half-shaft ball-bearing recall (22V091) that GM's own filing traces to a supplier misbuild affecting just 22 vehicles. Neither is systemic or severe. What holds this out of the 70s is the TSB/investigation picture underneath the recall count: December 2021 is when GM opened an investigation into the TR-9080 dual-clutch transmission after a cluster of owner complaints (fluid leaks, park-position error codes), and GM's resulting service directive — pull and inspect the transmission fluid filter at first service — was scoped specifically to 2020 and 2021 model-year cars, meaning this exact model year sits at the center of that action even though it never became a formal NHTSA recall.
The naturally aspirated 6.2L LT2 half of the powertrain is a dry-sump evolution of GM's Gen V small-block with no durability red flags even this early in C8 production. The Tremec TR-9080 dual-clutch is a different story for exactly this model year: 2021 is when the transmission's early-build problems — fluid-seal/gasket leaks, debris fouling the park-position sensor and triggering false 'shift to park' warnings, and a handful of outright engagement failures — became visible enough in the field that GM opened a formal NHTSA investigation in December 2021 and issued a dealer service directive scoped to 2020–2021 cars specifically. That makes 2021 the low point of this item across the C8's life; the later 'Die 3' transmission revision and falling complaint volume that lift 2023-and-newer scores in this dataset had not happened yet.
Reviewers treated the C8's cabin as a genuine turning point for the nameplate from its first model years: leather and suede across nearly every surface, soft-touch plastic where those aren't used, real aluminum trim, and fit that multiple outlets said rivaled cars costing thousands more — explicitly framed as the Corvette finally shedding interior quality as its historical weak point. That is a strong result for a car starting well under $60,000 in 2021. It stops short of the top band because the assessment is relative to the Corvette's own history and its price, not an absolute match for the Porsche/Lexus end of this segment's calibration, and because CR's own contemporaneous read on fit and finish (see 6.2.2) was less glowing than the enthusiast press.
This is where the enthusiast-press praise and the more clinical assessments diverge. Consumer Reports called the interior fit and finish 'unimpressive' as part of the same evaluation that produced the 2/5 predicted-reliability score and non-recommendation, and 2021 was an early-production year for an all-new mid-engine platform built during a period of COVID-driven supply disruption, which is exactly the condition under which assembly consistency tends to suffer. That sits this below the later, more settled model years in this dataset (2023–2026 score 66–73) while still crediting that no systemic structural defect was ever identified — the issues are panel/trim-level, not safety-level.
Chevrolet's roughly 3,000-store US footprint was already in place for 2021 and remains the Corvette's structural advantage over every sports-car rival in this segment's calibration — no Porsche or import sports-car buyer gets anywhere near that proximity to a warranty dealer. The C8-specific caveat existed from launch, too: GM required Corvette-certified dealers with specific tooling and technician training for the mid-engine car, so the practically-useful network is a meaningful subset of the full Chevrolet footprint. Held a shade below the mid-80s scores in the later, more settled years of this dataset, reflecting that the certification program and technician base were newer and thinner in only the car's second model year.
RepairPal's model-level Corvette figures — about $737 in average annual repair cost, low visit frequency, high per-incident severity — apply to the 2021 car and are ordinary-car money by sports-car standards, helped by the LT2's shared parts channel with GM's highest-volume small-block applications and a large, mature Corvette aftermarket. Set a little below the later years in this dataset for two reasons specific to 2021: the model-year-specific TR-9080 service action (filter inspection, and in some cases warranty transmission work) added dealer-only repair incidents this year that the settled post-revision transmission doesn't carry, and 2021 fell inside the industry-wide COVID-era parts-supply disruption that lengthened backorders across the board.
7Technology & InfotainmentMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.25C
The vertically-oriented 8-inch touchscreen, angled toward the driver, is the only size offered on the 2021 Corvette regardless of trim.
Chevrolet Infotainment 3 Plus is generally reviewed as quick and logically laid out, though the small 8-inch screen and dedicated climate/audio hard buttons stacked on the center stack feel dated next to larger, more configurable systems.
Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto became standard across all three trims (1LT, 2LT, 3LT) for the 2021 model year, an upgrade from wired-only in 2020.
Native navigation and voice control are functional but unremarkable; most owners default to CarPlay/Android Auto navigation and voice assistants instead of the built-in system.
The standard 6-speaker system is adequate; the Bose Performance Series system (10/14-speaker configuration depending on source, standard on 2LT/3LT) is a genuine step up and well reviewed.
A crisp, fully configurable 12-inch digital cluster is standard across all trims, with distinct Tour/Sport/Track display modes and a track-specific tachometer view added for 2021.
The C8 rides on GM's Global B electrical architecture, which supports over-the-air updates for infotainment and select modules, but this is not the whole-vehicle, feature-adding OTA capability of an EV-focused competitor.
The myChevrolet app offers remote lock/start/locate, but remote start requires an active OnStar/Connected Services subscription once the initial trial expires, and owners report inconsistent app reliability.
Just two USB ports (one USB-A, one USB-C) live in a small covered console cubby, with a wireless charging pad added on 2LT/3LT — modest provision given there are only two seats to serve.
Proximity keyless entry and push-button start are standard, with remote start available via the myChevrolet app/OnStar, but there's no phone-as-key feature.
A rearview camera and rear park assist are standard, and the front-lift system (with a camera-based nose view on some trims) helps with the car's low front splitter, but no true 360-degree surround camera is offered.
A color head-up display with Tour/Sport/Track-specific readouts (speed, gear, RPM, shift lights, nav, g-meter, lap times) is standard on 2LT/3LT and available on 1LT.
8Use-Case FitOne of the Corvette's weakest categories.0.00F
There is no rear seat of any kind — a strict 2-seat mid-engine layout — so no child seat can be installed and there is nowhere for kids to ride at all.
Forward collision alert and automatic emergency braking are available, but the car's core mission (no rear seats, low ground clearance, wide performance tires) makes it a poor family-safety proposition regardless of ADAS content.
With no rear seats and only 12.6 cu ft of split cargo space, the Corvette cannot carry a family of four or their luggage at all.
Reviewers frequently note the C8 is surprisingly civil in daily traffic — smooth DCT low-speed manners, a comfortable ride, and a standard front-lift system to clear driveways — offset by tight rearward visibility and a wide footprint.
EPA-rated around 15 city/27 highway/19 combined MPG on premium fuel, plus wide performance tires and higher insurance/maintenance costs, make per-mile commuting costs well above segment-typical for a daily driver.
A 38-ft turning circle is unremarkable but not oversized, though the car's width, low front splitter (curb-rash risk), and poor over-the-shoulder visibility make tight parking more stressful than the footprint alone suggests.
No tow rating, no bed, and minimal cargo split across two small trunks — the Corvette has no meaningful work capability.
The LT2 V8 and chassis are robust for spirited driving, but the car is not designed, upholstered, or packaged for work-site abuse.
No tie-downs, no rack or upfit ecosystem, and no washable work-oriented surfaces — none of this applies to a low-slung 2-seat sports car.
Comfortable GT2 seats, a smooth-cruising V8/DCT combination, and roughly 450+ miles of highway range on the 18.5-gallon tank at 27 mpg hwy make it a capable long-distance cruiser for two, held back by only basic driver-assist tech and moderate cabin noise.
Rear-wheel drive only, roughly 3.6-4.0 inches of ground clearance, and no roof rails or accessory ecosystem make the Corvette pavement-only with essentially no outdoor utility.
The split front/rear trunk (12.6 cu ft total) can swallow a carry-on plus a couple of golf bags, but there are no folding rear seats, roof rails, or hitch to expand capacity for bulkier gear.
9Driving ExperienceOne of the Corvette's strongest categories.3.00B
The mid-engine layout gives the C8 exceptionally balanced, predictable, high-grip handling that multiple outlets rated among the best in the sports-car class, with Magnetic Ride Control (Z51) sharpening body control further.
The electric power steering is accurately weighted and naturally geared enough for daily use, but several reviewers note it delivers less raw feedback than the class benchmark (e.g., Porsche 911).
Standard Brembo brakes (12.6-in front/13.3-in rear) deliver strong, consistent stopping power, though Motor Trend flagged the new brake-by-wire pedal as harder to modulate precisely at the limit than a traditional hydraulic setup.
The naturally aspirated 6.2L V8 paired with the 8-speed dual-clutch automatic (the only transmission offered) delivers smooth, immediate throttle response and quick, well-calibrated shifts with none of the low-speed lurch some DCTs exhibit.
The V8 mounted just behind the cabin produces a strong, characterful exhaust note (enhanced by the optional performance exhaust for 495 hp) that reviewers describe as exciting rather than droning, though it is loud enough to intrude on quiet cruising.
A wide, low-slung mid-engine car with a long wheelbase, the Corvette's turning circle is average for the segment rather than exceptionally tight.
The low, well-adjustable seating position and good forward sightlines are praised, but the divisive vertical button wall separating driver and passenger, plus a low nose and thick rear pillars, complicate visibility and control reach for some drivers.
Widely regarded by enthusiast press as an exceptional value performance car — mid-engine handling, strong naturally-aspirated V8 sound, and genuine supercar-like theater at a fraction of exotic pricing.
10Value & Market PositionThe Corvette's best-graded category.3.35B+
The base 1LT already includes leather seating, a 12-inch digital driver display, an 8-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, and a 10-speaker Bose system — generous for a sub-$60K car and well ahead of rivals that charge extra for comparable tech.
A sub-$60,000, 495-hp, mid-engine car that runs 0-60 in 3.4 seconds and is repeatedly called 'the best performance value around' by reviewers, competing with cars costing two to three times as much — a standout bang-for-buck case even before options.
Three trims (1LT/2LT/3LT) across coupe and convertible body styles, plus the Z51 Performance Package and Magnetic Ride Control as the main performance upgrades — a reasonable, well-spaced range but far narrower than rivals offering multiple engines or drivetrain layouts.
The C8 took 51% of the entire US sports car segment in Q1 2021, demand so far outstripped supply that Chevrolet stopped accepting new sold orders in March 2021, and buyers faced waits of a year or more — the clearest possible segment-leader signal.
Corvette is Chevrolet's aspirational halo nameplate with a devoted, decades-long following, and the C8's mid-engine reinvention only amplified that desirability — reflected directly in the dealer markups buyers were willing to pay.
2021 was the worst possible year for buyer leverage: no factory financing incentives existed yet (Chevrolet's first C8 financing offers didn't arrive until 2024), and demand was so far ahead of supply that dealers routinely marked up cars $20,000-$75,000 over MSRP instead of discounting.
2021 is only the second model year of the all-new C8 generation — the first mid-engine Corvette, a ground-up platform change from the C7 — putting it about as fresh as a generation gets.
The C8 swept major honors (2020 North American Car of the Year) and the 2021 Stingray made Car and Driver's 2021 10Best list, with reviewers consistently calling it a segment-defining performance value.
