The verdict
A struggling sports car, strong on driving and held back by efficiency.
The 2019 Corvette Stingray is the last of the front-engine C7 generation, and it goes out swinging: a 455-hp V8, a sub-4-second 0-60 time, and Nurburgring-tuned handling for a starting price around $57,000 — a fraction of what European rivals with similar numbers cost. It's also a strict two-seater with almost no modern driver-assist safety tech, thirsty 18-MPG-combined fuel economy, and an infotainment system that was already dated the year it was built. This is a car for someone chasing driving thrills and value-per-horsepower, not a family hauler or a tech showcase.
Jump to scoresStrengths
- Genuinely thrilling handling and braking
- Strong, smooth V8 power at a low price of entry
- Exceptional performance-per-dollar
What holds it back
- Almost no modern driver-assist safety tech
- Thirsty by any standard, not just sports-car standards
- Strict two-seat layout rules out family use entirely

Detailed scoring by subject
1Performance & PowertrainOne of the Corvette's strongest categories.2.89B-
Chevrolet's SAE-certified rating for the naturally aspirated LT1 in standard trim; only about 1 in 7 buyers added the Z51 package that brings the performance exhaust bump.
Base LT1 torque peak; the small bump from the optional performance exhaust only reached a minority of 2019 buyers.
Chevrolet's own performance figure for the volume automatic-transmission Stingray, which the majority of 2019 buyers chose over the manual.
The naturally aspirated LT1 delivers immediate, linear throttle response with no turbo lag, strong low-end torque, and a wide, hard-pulling rev range to its 6,500 rpm redline — reviewers consistently called it smooth and confidence-inspiring at both partial and full throttle.
The 8L90 8-speed automatic (chosen by ~78% of 2019 buyers) shifts crisply in Drive and via paddles with class-leading outright speed, though some owners noted occasional lag/hesitation in paddle-manual mode; the 7-speed manual with active rev-matching is well regarded but a minority choice.
The C7-generation 2019 Corvette is rear-wheel drive only across every trim (Stingray, Grand Sport, Z06, ZR1); all-wheel drive did not arrive on the Corvette until the C8-based 2024 E-Ray.
2019 offers three distinct V8 tunes across the range — naturally aspirated LT1 (Stingray/Grand Sport), supercharged LT4 (Z06), and supercharged LT5 (ZR1) — plus a manual/automatic choice, but every option is gasoline; there is no turbo, hybrid, PHEV, or EV variant.
2Efficiency & RangeThe Corvette's lowest-graded category.0.00F
EPA-certified combined figure for the LT1 V8/8-speed automatic, the transmission the large majority of 2019 buyers chose.
EPA city rating for the volume automatic-transmission configuration.
EPA highway rating for the LT1 V8/8-speed automatic.
EPA-published total range for the automatic-transmission configuration, derived from the 18.5-gallon tank and 18 MPG combined rating.
EPA's standard annual cost estimate for the volume automatic configuration, pricing in the manufacturer-recommended premium fuel.
Chevrolet's owner's manual recommends 91-octane premium for full power and lists 87-octane regular as usable in a pinch (with reduced acceleration/economy and possible knock, at which point the manual says to return to premium) — a lighter requirement than the supercharged Z06/ZR1, which need premium.
3SafetyOne of the Corvette's weakest categories.0.00F
The C7 Corvette (2014-2019) has never been submitted by GM for NHTSA NCAP crash testing due to its low production volume; no overall star rating exists for the 2019 model year.
IIHS has not crash-tested the C7 generation, so there is no Top Safety Pick award and no published crashworthiness results to point to; scored in the untested band per guidance since neither positive nor negative evidence exists beyond baseline FMVSS compliance.
The 2019 Corvette offers essentially no active-safety suite: no AEB, no blind-spot monitoring, and no rear cross-traffic alert at any trim or option package. Only warning-level Forward Collision Alert and Lane Departure Warning/Lane Keep Assist are available.
The 2019 Corvette has no automatic emergency braking on any trim. Forward Collision Alert is warning-only (visual flash plus audible beeps), with no automatic brake intervention.
Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are not offered on the 2019 Corvette at any trim or option package.
The 2019 Corvette offers Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning, a warning/soft-intervention system (seat pulse or steering vibration above ~37 mph) rather than true lane-centering, and it is not clearly documented as standard across all trims.
No adaptive cruise control is offered on the 2019 Corvette on any trim; only conventional fixed-speed cruise control is available.
No hands-free highway driving system was offered on the Corvette in 2019.
The volume 1LT trim comes with standard HID headlights and automatic on/off headlamps, but the vehicle has no independent IIHS headlight grade to corroborate real-world performance.
Low, wide sports-car proportions and thick rear pillars significantly hamper rear and side visibility; the standard backup camera partially offsets this for parking maneuvers.
4Space & ComfortGrades below the middle of the scale.1.45D
The C7 Corvette Stingray is a strict two-seater with no rear seats of any kind; this is a defining characteristic of the model, not a configuration choice.
Mid-pack front headroom for a low-slung sports coupe; the removable roof panel does not change headroom versus roof-on.
Generous front legroom for the segment, helped by the long wheelbase and forward cabin position typical of the front-engine C7 layout.
Large for a sports coupe thanks to the hatchback-style rear trunk; the removable roof panel stows inside it without meaningfully reducing usable space.
The wide, flat 15-cu-ft trunk swallows the stowed roof panel and still leaves usable space, and the cabin has modest console/door bins, but there is no frunk (front-engine layout) and no standout storage innovation.
Standard GT bucket seats are widely praised as supportive yet comfortable for both daily driving and track days, with good adjustability; optional Competition Sport buckets trade some long-haul comfort for extra lateral hold.
Base (non-Z51) suspension with the optional magnetic ride adaptive dampers gives a surprisingly compliant ride for a car of this performance level, though it remains firmer than a touring coupe and Z51-equipped cars trade comfort for handling.
Noticeable tire and road noise from the run-flat performance rubber, plus some wind noise, are common owner and reviewer complaints on the front-engine C7; engine/exhaust noise at cruise is manageable and doesn't dominate the cabin.
Dual-zone automatic climate control is standard across the range; heated and ventilated front seats are standard from 2LT up and optional on the base 1LT, putting key comfort features at mid-trim and above rather than universally standard.
5Cost of OwnershipGrades below the middle of the scale.1.52D
1LT is the entry trim; base MSRP is $55,900 before destination, $57,895 with the 8-speed automatic.
1LT is both the base and volume trim — final 2019 production stats show 67.3% of Stingray coupe buyers chose 1LT over 2LT (24.9%) or 3LT (7.7%); the automatic outsells the manual industry-wide.
RepairPal puts average annual repair cost at $737 (below the $652 all-car average in dollar terms is close, but severity of repairs is high at 22% vs 12% average), and Consumer Reports flagged the 2019 model year specifically for above-average complaints in climate system, suspension/steering, transmission and electronics — pushing the 5-year estimate toward the upper half of the segment band once tires, brakes and fluids for a high-performance V8 coupe are included.
iSeeCars' multi-year Corvette study puts average 5-year depreciation at 27.5% (vs. 38.8% for the average vehicle), placing the Corvette among the best-retaining vehicles on sale; figure is a nameplate-level aggregate rather than 2019-specific.
Standard GM new-vehicle limited warranty for the 2019 model year.
Standard GM powertrain limited warranty for the 2019 model year, transferable to subsequent owners.
Chevrolet covers two oil/filter changes plus tire rotations within the first 24 months/24,000 miles, plus 5-year/60,000-mile roadside assistance and a 3-month OnStar trial — a short included-maintenance window and basic roadside/connected-service perks, not a multi-year program with meaningful extras.
$58,990 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (72.5% retained, or about $42,768) leaves about $16,222 in depreciation. Add the projected $7,800 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $24,022 in total.
6Reliability & QualityMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.30C+
Consumer Reports' predicted-reliability score for the 2019 Corvette dropped sharply for this model year, landing below even the 2019 Chevrolet Traverse (one of CR's five least-reliable vehicles that year); owner-reported trouble spots spanned climate system, suspension/steering, transmission, in-car electronics and drive system. U.S. News' aggregate score (4/5) is more favorable but draws on a thinner, less rigorous owner-survey base than CR's predicted-reliability methodology, so CR is weighted as the primary signal here.
Chevrolet sits mid-pack in multi-year dependability studies rather than at either extreme — GM earned a handful of 2020 JD Power VDS segment awards (Equinox, Silverado HD, Tahoe) but other Chevrolet models, including the same-era Silverado 1500 generation, scored below average in CR's long-term surveys.
The 2019 model year carries a single NHTSA recall (18V360000 / GM 18195), and it is narrow in scope — limited to ZR1 variants where hard braking/acceleration could fault the sensing diagnostic module and disable airbag deployment, remedied with a free SDM software reprogram. No powertrain, fire, or fleet-wide safety campaigns for the year.
The base 2019 Stingray's naturally-aspirated 6.2L LT1 pushrod V8 is a direct descendant of GM's small-block lineage with a strong high-mileage track record and a reputation, per owner and enthusiast forums, for reaching six-figure mileage with routine maintenance; it lacks the added complexity/failure points of the supercharged LT4/LT5 used in higher trims. Scattered owner reports of oil leaks, engine mounts and accessory belt/pulley wear keep it just short of the top tier.
The C7's cabin, refreshed for the 2014 redesign and carried into 2019, is well built and well-appointed by the model's own historical standard, but reviewers were consistent that Chevrolet's real leap in material quality and soft-touch coverage didn't arrive until the C8 in 2020 — the 2019 car still mixes real leather and metal accents with harder plastics in lower-touch zones, competitive for a domestic sports coupe but short of European luxury-GT rivals at a similar price.
Assembly at the dedicated Bowling Green plant is generally regarded as solid for the model generation, with reviewers noting tight panel gaps on the coupe; the CR-flagged in-car electronics and climate complaints for 2019 point to some scattered squeak/rattle and infotainment-glitch reports rather than a systemic fit-and-finish problem.
Chevrolet runs one of the densest dealer networks in the US (~3,000 dealers), so routine service access is essentially universal; Corvette-specific technical expertise and specialty parts stock vary by dealer, keeping this short of a top-tier score reserved for brands with deeper model-specific specialization.
The Corvette benefits from a huge, decades-deep aftermarket and shares many mechanical components with GM's broader small-block/pushrod parts ecosystem, keeping routine maintenance and body/mechanical parts comparatively cheap for a sports car; performance-specific hardware (magnetic ride dampers, carbon-ceramic brakes on higher trims) costs more than mainstream Chevrolet parts but is still far below exotic-car repair bills.
7Technology & InfotainmentGrades near the bottom of the scale.0.94F
The 8-inch touchscreen was unchanged across all C7 trims for 2019 and sits at the bottom of the segment's normalization band.
MyLink's tile-based interface was easy to learn but, by the final year of the C7 generation (unchanged core software since 2014), reviewers routinely called it dated next to newer rival systems, with some menu lag and a screen resolution behind the segment.
Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were standard across all 2019 trims but wired-only — GM did not offer wireless phone projection on any Corvette until the C8 generation, so no trim reaches the wireless tier.
MyLink included basic voice commands and an optional embedded navigation package (part of the IO5/IO6 option), but both were widely considered secondary to running Google/Apple Maps through phone projection.
A 9-speaker Bose system was standard on 1LT, stepping up to a 10-speaker Bose Performance system on 2LT/3LT — solid, well-regarded sound for the class though not a flagship audiophile brand.
The C7's 8-inch reconfigurable TFT driver display offered three selectable themes (Tour/Sport/Track) with shift lights, g-force and tire-temp readouts — genuinely configurable and well regarded, though it's paired with analog-style framing rather than being a full edge-to-edge digital cluster.
GM's whole-vehicle OTA update platform (Ultifi) postdates the C7; 2019 Corvette software updates were dealer-applied or map-data refreshes via USB, not a true over-the-air mechanism.
OnStar RemoteLink / myChevrolet app supported remote start, lock/unlock and vehicle locate, but core remote functions required an OnStar data plan after the included trial and there was no digital-key feature.
Two USB-A ports and an aux jack were standard, with no USB-C, no wireless charging pad (that arrived with the C8), and no household AC outlet.
Keyless entry and push-button/proximity keyless ignition were standard across the 2019 lineup, though there was no phone-as-key capability.
A standard rearview camera was the only parking aid on the volume trim; there was no factory 360-degree camera and rear ultrasonic park-assist sensors were, at best, a limited/late-availability option rather than standard equipment for the 2019 model year.
A configurable head-up display was included from 2LT up (and on Z51/higher-content 1LT packages), but was not standard on the base 1LT volume trim, matching the 'limited to upper trims' band.
8Use-Case FitOne of the Corvette's weakest categories.0.00F
The 2019 Corvette Stingray is a strict two-seat coupe with no rear bench or LATCH anchors of any kind, so a car seat cannot be installed and there is no second row to load kids or gear into.
Standard equipment includes stability control, ABS, dual front/side airbags and a rearview camera, but the 2019 model year does not offer forward-collision warning or automatic emergency braking at any price point, and the car has never been crash-tested by NHTSA or IIHS given its low sales volume, so there is no independent family-safety data.
With only two seats there is no way to transport a family on a multi-hour trip regardless of how comfortable the front seats or how usable the cargo hold is.
The volume 8-speed automatic Stingray is genuinely easy to drive in traffic — smooth low-speed shifts, a Tour/Weather drive mode that softens the Magnetic Ride Control dampers, good outward visibility for a sports car, and a standard rearview camera — but the low ride height, wide body and firm Z51 tuning still add fatigue versus a mainstream commuter car.
EPA ratings of 16/25/19 mpg city/highway/combined on required premium fuel, plus performance-summer tires that wear faster and cost more than commuter rubber, make per-mile running costs well above average for daily use.
At roughly 177 inches long the Corvette is shorter than most mid-size sedans and has a tight turning circle, which helps in garages and city streets, but its 73.9-inch width and low front splitter (scrape risk on ramps and steep driveways) offset the compact footprint.
There is no published tow rating, no payload rating and no bed or usable flat cargo area beyond a small rear hatch, so the car has essentially no fitness for hauling work materials.
The naturally aspirated LT1 small-block V8 has a strong reputation for mechanical robustness, but the car's low ride height, performance clutch/tires and lack of any work-context testing mean it is not built or intended for abuse-duty use.
There are no tie-down points, no roof rack or crossbar option, no auxiliary 12V worksite power, and no upfit ecosystem of any kind — the car offers essentially nothing for jobsite use.
GT2 bucket seats and Magnetic Ride Control in Tour mode make the Stingray a reasonably comfortable highway cruiser with roughly 350 miles of range on its 18.5-gallon tank at 19 mpg combined, but the 2019 model does not offer adaptive cruise control or lane-centering, so long stints get more fatiguing than in rivals with full driver-assist suites.
Rear-wheel drive only, no all-wheel-drive option, and a very low front splitter (roughly 4-5 inches of clearance) make the car pavement-bound; it has no roof rails, no meaningful tow capacity for toys, and scrapes on rough or unimproved surfaces.
The removable-roof coupe's rear hatch opens to roughly 15 cubic feet of usable cargo space — unusually generous for a two-seat sports car and enough for golf bags or a couple of large suitcases — though stowing the removable roof panel inside eats into that space when the top is off.
9Driving ExperienceThe Corvette's best-graded category.3.48B+
The C7 Stingray, especially with the Z51 package's retuned suspension, electronic limited-slip diff and Magnetic Ride Control, delivers exceptional grip and turn-in with negligible body roll for its price class, rivaling far pricier sports cars.
Electric power steering is nicely weighted and precise enough to place the car accurately, but multiple contemporary reviews note it transmits little genuine road feedback compared to the best rivals in this calibration set.
Standard (and especially Z51-upgraded) Brembo brakes provide strong, fade-resistant, easily modulated stops with a natural pedal, stopping from 60 mph in roughly 95 feet per contemporary testing.
The naturally aspirated 6.2L LT1 V8 revs cleanly with no turbo lag, and the 8-speed automatic (standard on the majority of 2019 volume-trim builds) shifts smoothly and quickly, described by reviewers as matching dual-clutch response without DCT low-speed harshness.
The LT1 V8's exhaust note (amplified on Z51's performance exhaust) is widely praised as characterful and pleasant under load rather than coarse or droning, filling the cabin without becoming fatiguing.
Long front overhang and wide front track for a coupe push the C7 Stingray's turning circle to the wider end of the segment band.
The driver-focused cockpit, highly adjustable power seats (competition sport seats optional) and low-set wheel give a proper sports-car driving position with good forward sightlines, though the low nose and thick rear pillars leave rearward visibility as a known weak point.
Widely regarded by contemporary press as one of the most engaging, characterful performance-per-dollar sports cars on sale in 2019 — a genuine enthusiast favorite that rewards being driven hard rather than just commuted in.
10Value & Market PositionOne of the Corvette's strongest categories.3.20B+
Even the base 1LT at $55,900 comes with the 455-hp 6.2L LT1 V8, an 8" touchscreen infotainment system, keyless entry/push-button start and 4G LTE Wi-Fi standard — content that rival sports cars (911, AMG GT) charge tens of thousands more to match.
A sub-4-second 0-60 mph V8 sports car starting under $56,000, topping out with the 755-hp ZR1 that Motor Trend and Car and Driver rated a match for the McLaren 720S, Lamborghini Aventador S and Porsche 911 GT2 RS at a fraction of their price, is a standout performance-per-dollar proposition.
Four distinct models (Stingray, Grand Sport, Z06, ZR1) each in 1LT/2LT/3LT trims, coupe or convertible body, manual or automatic — a wide, well-spaced range from a $56k daily sports car to a $123k track weapon.
34,822 units built for MY2019 — nearly quadruple 2018's shortened run and the strongest Corvette year in over a decade — comfortably outselling every rival sports car (Supra, Z, BRZ, AMG GT) combined, aided by pent-up demand and the ZR1 launch, though total volume is still a niche-segment figure next to mainstream nameplates.
America's sports car since 1953, with an enthusiast community, dedicated museum and 88% owner recommendation rate — an aspirational, beloved nameplate with strong following.
As C8 anticipation built through late 2019, dealers discounted remaining 2019 stock heavily — up to ~$12,000 off MSRP plus a $3,000 loyalty credit and interest-free financing offers — meaningful, buyer-favorable incentives without the car being an unwanted model.
2019 is the final model year of the C7 generation (2014-2019) before the all-new mid-engine C8 launched for 2020 — an aging platform with a major, widely-anticipated redesign imminent.
Reviewers praised the Stingray's handling, brakes and steering and hailed the ZR1 as a giant-killer against exotics well above its price, but the accolades and spotlight for this generation's send-off were increasingly overshadowed within 2019 itself by the reveal of the all-new C8, which is what claimed Car and Driver's 10Best recognition that year rather than the outgoing C7.
