The verdict

A struggling sports car, strong on value and held back by efficiency.

The 2018 Corvette Stingray is the last of the front-engine C7s and still one of the great performance bargains: 455 hp, 0-60 in 3.9 seconds, and a $56,490 sticker that undercuts European rivals by tens of thousands. It backs that up with a 15 cu ft hatch trunk that swallows real luggage, Magnetic Ride Control that makes it genuinely livable day to day, and depreciation of only about 27.5% over five years. The catch is everything outside the driving: 19 MPG combined on premium fuel ($4,100/yr), two seats and no back row, and a complete absence of driver-assist tech — no automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep, or adaptive cruise on any trim. Buy it because you want to drive it; don't buy it expecting a modern safety net.

#2 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

Car and Driver's instrumented test of a 2018 Stingray (manual, Z51-equipped) ran 0-60 in 3.9 seconds with a 12.2s @ 117 mph quarter mile; Chevrolet's own marketing claim for the quickest Z51/automatic configuration is 3.7s.

Powertrain refinement82
#3 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

The naturally aspirated LT1 pushrod V8 delivers immediate, linear throttle response with no turbo lag or hybrid-transition artifacts, and reviewers consistently praise its broad torque curve and eagerness to rev, though its pushrod, two-valve architecture is coarser and less exotic-sounding than a DOHC rival's at high rpm.

Transmission behavior74
#11 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

The standard 7-speed manual's automatic rev-matching (Active Rev Match) blips the throttle smoothly on downshifts and is well regarded, but reviewers note an awkward shift gate where the 4-to-5 upshift can be mistaken for 7th; the optional 8-speed automatic shifts crisply with no notable hunting.

AWD/4WD availability8
#11 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

The C7 Corvette is rear-wheel drive only across every 2018 trim (Stingray, Grand Sport, Z06); no all-wheel or four-wheel drive configuration was ever offered for this generation.

Powertrain lineup breadth12
#13 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

Every 2018 Corvette trim shares the same naturally aspirated 6.2L LT1 V8 gasoline engine (Z06 uses a supercharged LT4, a different but still single-fuel-type gas engine); there is no hybrid, PHEV, EV, or turbocharged option anywhere in the lineup.

2Efficiency & RangeThe Corvette's lowest-graded category.0.00F
Combined fuel economy

EPA-rated combined economy for the base non-supercharged 2018 Stingray with the standard 7-speed manual transmission; automatic and NPP-exhaust-equipped configurations rate slightly lower.

City fuel economy
16 MPG city (7-speed manual, non-Z51/non-NPP)
0/100
#12 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

EPA city rating for the base manual-transmission Stingray, the volume configuration.

Highway fuel economy
25 MPG highway (7-speed manual, non-Z51/non-NPP)

#12 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

EPA highway rating for the base manual-transmission Stingray, the volume configuration.

Driving range
~352 mi on a full 18.5-gal tank at 19 MPG combined (manual, non-NPP)
15/100
#9 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

The Corvette's EPA window sticker does not publish a range figure directly; this is calculated from the 18.5-gallon fuel tank capacity and the 19 MPG EPA combined rating for the base manual configuration.

Estimated annual fuel cost
$4,100/yr (manual, non-NPP) at EPA's 15,000 mi/yr assumption; up to $4,850/yr for the automatic+NPP configuration

EPA's standard annual fuel cost estimate at 15,000 miles/year for the base manual, non-supercharged/non-NPP configuration, using premium fuel pricing assumptions.

Fuel requirements30
#8 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

The LT1 V8's compression ratio and performance tuning require premium (91-octane) unleaded gasoline across every 2018 Corvette trim, with no regular-fuel option.

3SafetyOne of the Corvette's weakest categories.0.00F
NHTSA overall rating
Not independently crash tested by NHTSA (low production volume)
50/100
#5 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

NHTSA has never published an overall star rating for the C7 Corvette (2014-2019), including the 2018 model year; low sales volume means it falls outside NCAP's testing program. Value is an inferred mid-high estimate based on the Corvette's modern hydroformed-aluminum frame and standard multi-airbag protection, not an actual published test result.

IIHS awards & crashworthiness38
#13 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

IIHS has never crash-tested the C7 Corvette and it holds no Top Safety Pick award or published crashworthiness results for any 2018 trim. Scored in the untested band since there is no test data to substantiate strong crashworthiness the way there is for high-volume rivals.

Standard ADAS suite breadth12
#10 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

The 2018 Corvette offers zero of the core ADAS features (AEB, adaptive cruise, lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert) as standard OR optional on any trim — an unusually complete absence even for its era, called out repeatedly by contemporary press.

Automatic emergency braking performance5
#8 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

No forward-collision or automatic emergency braking system exists on the 2018 Corvette, on any trim, standard or optional, so there is no AEB behavior to rate beyond its absence.

Blind-spot & cross-traffic coverage8
#12 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are absent from the 2018 Corvette lineup entirely, not merely gated to upper trims; owners are limited to mirrors and the standard rear camera.

Lane keeping & centering8
#7 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

No lane-departure warning or lane-keep assist hardware is fitted or offered on the 2018 Corvette.

Adaptive cruise & highway assist18
#8 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

The 2018 Corvette has conventional, non-adaptive cruise control as a standard feature but no radar-based adaptive cruise or highway-assist system on any trim.

Hands-free driving availability0
#13 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

No hands-free highway-driving system (e.g. Super Cruise) was available on any Corvette during the C7 generation; GM did not extend that technology to Corvette until much later.

Headlight performance48
#5 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

Standard sculpted bi-xenon HID headlamps are above-average hardware for the era, but there is no auto high-beam or adaptive lighting on any 2018 trim, and IIHS has never independently rated the Corvette's headlights.

Outward visibility42
#10 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

The C7's low, wide greenhouse and thick rear pillars create real blind spots off the rear quarters, a widely noted trait among owners and reviewers; the standard wide-view rear camera partially compensates but there is no blind-spot backup system.

4Space & ComfortGrades below the middle of the scale.1.24D
Seating capacity

#6 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

Generous front legroom for a low sports car, near the top of the coupe band.

Cargo/trunk volume
15 cu ft (coupe; convertible 10 cu ft)
50/100
#4 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

The coupe's rear hatch trunk is unusually large for a sports car thanks to the fixed-roof glass hatch; the convertible loses some volume but still keeps its trunk clear when the top is stowed.

In-cabin storage & clever solutions45
#8 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

A shallow center console bin, small door pockets and a rear cargo shelf behind the seats cover the basics, but there is little of the segment-benchmark cleverness (no frunk, limited underfloor space) found on some rivals.

Seat comfort65
#4 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

Standard seats strike a good balance of cushioning and support for most drivers, though reviewers note they sit high and can be tight for drivers 6 feet and taller; optional competition seats trade comfort for bolstering.

Ride quality66
#3 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

With the optional Magnetic Ride Control (widely fitted via Z51/2LT-3LT packages), the ride is composed and forgiving for a performance car on big wheels and run-flat tires; base FE1/FE3 suspensions are firmer but still not harsh.

Cabin quietness47
#6 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

Performance summer tires generate notable road noise on coarse pavement that is clearly audible in the cabin, and engine/exhaust presence is deliberately prominent; this is a loud car relative to the wider coupe field even if enthusiasts don't mind it.

Climate & comfort features55
#6 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

Heated and ventilated seats with power lumbar arrive on the 2LT trim and up; the base 1LT lacks them, so key comfort features are mid-trim-gated rather than standard.

5Cost of OwnershipGrades below the middle of the scale.1.57D
Base MSRP
$56,490 (Stingray 1LT coupe, 7-speed manual, incl. $995 destination)
0/100
#9 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

1LT is the entry trim for the base Stingray; base MSRP is $55,495 before destination, only $50 above the 2017 price.

Volume-Trim Price
$58,240 (Stingray 1LT coupe, 8-speed automatic, as typically equipped)
0/100
#9 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

1LT is both the base and volume trim — final 2018 production stats show 57.1% of Stingray coupe buyers chose 1LT over 2LT (25.4%) and 3LT (17.7%); the 8-speed automatic ($1,750 option) outsells the standard 7-speed manual industry-wide.

5-Year Maintenance & Repair Cost
~$7,200–8,000 est. over 5 years (scheduled maintenance + repairs)
22/100
#10 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

RepairPal puts the Corvette's average annual repair cost at $737 with a high (22%) severe-repair probability versus a 12% average, and the model's 3.0/5.0 RepairPal reliability rating ranks 23rd of 24 midsize cars — a low-frequency but high-severity repair profile for a high-performance V8 sports car, plus tires, brakes and fluids consistent with the segment.

5-Year Resale Value Retention
~72.5% of MSRP retained after 5 years
100/100
#1 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

iSeeCars' multi-year Corvette study puts average 5-year depreciation at 27.5% (vs. 38.8% for the average vehicle), placing the Corvette among the best-retaining vehicles on sale; figure is a nameplate-level aggregate rather than 2018-specific.

Complimentary maintenance & perks55
#4 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

Chevrolet Complete Care covers two complimentary oil/filter changes plus tire rotations within the first 24 months/24,000 miles, plus 5-year/60,000-mile roadside assistance and an OnStar trial — a short included-maintenance window and basic roadside/connected-service perks, not a multi-year program with meaningful extras.

Effective 5-Year Ownership Cost
$23,616 (≈$16,016 depreciation + $7,600 maintenance)
64/100
#7 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

$58,240 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (72.5% retained, or about $42,224) leaves about $16,016 in depreciation. Add the projected $7,600 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $23,616 in total.

6Reliability & QualityOne of the Corvette's strongest categories.3.00B
Predicted reliability68
#7 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

Consumer Reports did not publish a full predicted-reliability score for the 2018 model year specifically, and CR's own coverage notes the nameplate's predicted reliability slipped for 2017 and fell further by 2019 — 2018 sits in that soft patch between two weaker data points rather than showing a clean top-tier signal.

Brand reliability track record70
#7 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

Chevrolet placed 6th (tied with Hyundai, 124 PP100) in J.D. Power's 2018 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study and cracked the top five in the 2019 study — a solidly mid-pack-to-good mainstream brand, not a bottom-tier one, but short of the perennial leaders (Lexus, Porsche, Toyota).

Recall & TSB history74
#3 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

The 2016-2018 Corvette carries one recall (electric power steering assist failure, remedied with a free power-steering gear replacement) — a real but non-catastrophic, dealer-fixed issue rather than a fire or structural defect. TSB 19NA217 addresses manual-transmission stalling/clutch chatter and automatic-transmission launch vibration, typical service-bulletin activity rather than a systemic pattern.

Powertrain durability reputation84
#1 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

The base 2018 Stingray's naturally aspirated 6.2L LT1 V8 descends directly from GM's long-proven small-block LS/LT family, with a well-established high-mileage track record; reviewers and owners consistently flag the supercharged LT4/LT5 (Z06/ZR1) as the riskier variants, not the base LT1 scored here.

Interior material quality63
#7 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

Reviewers note genuine soft-touch material at primary touchpoints and call the cabin acceptable to well-appointed at the Stingray's roughly $60K starting price, but repeatedly criticize the switchgear, multimedia screens and gauge plastics as feeling like 'Chevrolet parts bin' and flimsy in spots — competitive but not class-leading.

Fit & finish74
#8 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

No pattern of panel-gap, rattle or misalignment complaints surfaced in owner or reviewer coverage for the 2018 model year; the C7 platform was in its fifth model year by 2018, well past early-production teething issues, consistent with generally solid assembly.

Dealer & service network80
#8 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

Chevrolet runs one of the densest dealer networks in the US, with thousands of dealers nationwide and Corvette-specific service expertise widely available, backed by Chevrolet's 2018 J.D. Power dependability/CSI standing.

Parts availability & repair cost80
#6 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

The C7 (2014-2019) generation is supported by an extensive, well-established aftermarket — multiple dedicated retailers (Zip Corvette, Corvette Central, West Coast Corvette) stock everything from maintenance parts to performance upgrades — and mainstream mechanical parts share with GM's broader LT-family parts bin keep routine repair costs from running dealer-exclusive.

7Technology & InfotainmentGrades below the middle of the scale.1.12D
Touchscreen size
8 in (single size across trims)
12/100
#2 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

The 8-inch Chevrolet MyLink touchscreen is standard across the 2018 Corvette lineup with no larger option offered.

Infotainment UX & responsiveness55
#9 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

MyLink is usable and logically laid out with real physical volume/tune controls, but by 2018 the graphics and touch response already felt dated next to newer rivals' systems.

Wireless CarPlay / Android Auto55
#1 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard on all 2018 trims via the MyLink system, but only as a wired connection — wireless projection was not offered by GM on the C7 in this era.

Voice control & native navigation45
#10 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

Built-in navigation is an extra-cost option (not standard on 1LT), and MyLink's native voice recognition is basic; most owners default to phone-projected voice assistants and maps instead.

Audio system quality65
#11 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

A 9-speaker Bose system is standard from the base 1LT, stepping up to a 10-speaker Bose Performance system on 2LT/3LT — solid, class-competitive sound at every trim level.

Digital instrument cluster55
#4 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

The C7's driver information center pairs a configurable central LCD (shift lights, G-force, track telemetry) with flanking analog-style dials rather than a full digital cluster — a capable hybrid, not a crisp all-digital display, and it is standard across trims for 2018.

OTA update capability20
#8 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

GM's 2018-model-year infrastructure did not offer whole-vehicle over-the-air software updates; MyLink map/software updates existed but required dealer visits or manual USB updates rather than seamless OTA.

Companion app & remote functions55
#5 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

The myChevrolet app supports remote start, lock/unlock and vehicle status, but full functionality requires an active OnStar plan beyond the free basic tier, and the app was unremarkable by contemporary standards.

Charging ports & device power35
#8 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

The cabin offers a couple of USB-A ports and a 12V outlet; no wireless charging pad was offered on the 2018 Corvette, leaving device power provisions basic for a 2-seat cabin.

Keyless & remote access65
#3 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

Keyless open and push-button start are standard from the base 1LT, plus remote start via the myChevrolet app with an OnStar plan — solid keyless convenience across the lineup.

Camera & parking aids50
#6 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

A standard rear-vision camera (improved resolution/wider angle for 2018) plus an optional rear camera mirror cover the basics, but there is no 360-degree surround view or front parking sensors offered.

Head-up display availability58
#2 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

A head-up display is included on 2LT/3LT trims and above (with an improved rotation-adjustment feature for 2018) but is not available on the base 1LT, so it is limited to the higher trims.

8Use-Case FitOne of the Corvette's weakest categories.0.00F
Kid & car-seat practicality5
#13 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

A strict two-seat sports car with no rear seat and no LATCH anchors of any kind cannot carry a child seat under any circumstances.

Family safety package25
#10 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

Basic ADAS is thin even on upper trims (rear camera only as standard; no automatic emergency braking, blind-spot or lane-keep systems offered on the C7), and the car's core premise is irrelevant to multi-occupant family duty.

Family road-trip comfort5
#13 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

With only two seats and no rear cabin whatsoever, the Corvette cannot transport a family beyond two occupants — it is structurally excluded from this use case.

Daily driving ease62
#4 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

Reviewers consistently note the Corvette is unusually livable day to day for a performance car — a forgiving ride on Magnetic Ride Control, smooth low-speed behavior, and manageable clutch/shift effort (or none, with the automatic) — despite low-slung visibility.

Commuting cost efficiency30
#10 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

EPA-rated 16-17 city / 25-29 highway MPG on premium-recommended fuel, plus pricier performance tires and brake wear, put per-mile running costs well above the coupe norm for commuting.

Parking & maneuverability58
#7 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

The Corvette's fairly compact 177.9-in length and tight 37.7-ft turning circle help in tight spaces, offset by wide performance tires, a low nose that's hard to judge, and no front parking sensors.

Work capability5
#7 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

No towing capacity, no bed, and a shallow rear trunk make the Corvette unsuited to any work-hauling role.

Durability for work duty15
#11 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

The Corvette is engineered as a performance halo car, not for abuse, fleet use, or wear-friendly interior surfaces — reliability outside its intended use case is unproven and largely irrelevant to buyers.

Jobsite & upfit practicality5
#5 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

No tie-downs, no upfit ecosystem, no onboard power outlets beyond a standard 12V, and a low, narrow trunk make it entirely unsuited to jobsite use.

Long-distance comfort & range58
#1 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

A comfortable, well-supported seat and forgiving Magnetic Ride Control ride suit highway stints, and a roughly 19-gallon tank at ~29 hwy MPG gives usable touring range, though tire roar erodes long-haul refinement and there is no adaptive cruise / advanced driver-assist to ease fatigue.

Outdoor & adventure capability8
#11 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

Rear-wheel drive, minimal ground clearance, low front splitter, and no roof rack, hitch or AWD option make the Corvette essentially pavement-bound with no outdoor utility.

Gear & luggage flexibility40
#4 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

The 15 cu ft rear trunk (coupe) is unusually generous for a sports car and can swallow golf clubs or a couple of duffels, but seats don't fold, there's no roof rack or hitch, and bulky gear simply won't fit.

9Driving ExperienceOne of the Corvette's strongest categories.3.21B+
Handling & agility87
#4 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

With standard-fit wide Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires, a low center of gravity, and optional Magnetic Ride Control / Z51 performance package, the C7 Corvette delivers class-leading, track-capable grip and body control at a bargain price relative to European rivals.

Steering feel76
#9 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

The electric power steering is accurately weighted and precise with good on-center feel, praised by period reviewers, though not quite as communicative as the best hydraulic setups from rivals.

Braking confidence82
#5 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

Standard Brembo brakes (upgraded further with Z51) deliver strong, fade-resistant stopping power with a firm, confidence-inspiring pedal, a consistent strength of the C7 across trims.

Powertrain smoothness & response80
#3 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

The naturally aspirated 6.2L LT1 V8 is linear and immediately responsive with no turbo lag, and both the manual and 8-speed automatic (new for the C7 generation) shift smoothly with well-calibrated throttle mapping.

Drivetrain noise & vibration78
#2 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

The LT1 V8's exhaust note is a deliberate, celebrated part of the car's character — deep and aggressive without being coarse or droning — with an available active exhaust to modulate volume.

Turning circle
37.7 ft curb-to-curb
38/100
#9 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

A moderate turning circle for a low, wide sports car, roughly mid-pack against coupe rivals.

Driving position & ergonomics62
#10 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

A low, snug driving position with a well-placed wheel and pedals suits most drivers, but the high beltline and long hood hurt outward visibility, and ingress/egress over wide sills is a known annoyance, especially for taller drivers.

Fun-to-drive factor92
#2 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

The C7 Corvette is a perennial enthusiast favorite — huge power-to-price value, a vocal V8, sharp handling and genuine track capability across Stingray/Grand Sport/Z06 variants make it one of the most engaging cars in its class.

10Value & Market PositionThe Corvette's best-graded category.3.23B+
Standard equipment generosity85
#1 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

Even the base 1LT at $55,495 comes with the 455-hp 6.2L LT1 V8, an 8" MyLink touchscreen, keyless entry/push-button start and 4G LTE Wi-Fi standard — content that rival sports cars (911, AMG GT) charge tens of thousands more to match.

Feature value per dollar87
#3 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

A sub-4-second 0-60 mph V8 sports car starting under $56,000, topping out with the 650-hp supercharged Z06 at $79,495 that reviewers routinely benchmarked against Porsche 911 Turbo S and other exotics costing double, is a standout performance-per-dollar proposition.

Trim & configuration breadth75
#4 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

Three distinct models (Stingray, Grand Sport, Z06) each in 1LT/2LT/3LT trims, coupe or convertible body, manual or automatic — a wide, well-spaced range from a $55k daily sports car to a $79k supercharged track car, though 2018 lacks the ZR1 halo model that arrived for 2019.

Sales popularity & market acceptance55
#6 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

9,686 total 2018 Corvettes built — the lowest annual volume of the entire C7 generation — though the shortfall is largely a shortened production run (June 2017 to January 28, 2018) ahead of the plant changeover for the 2019 ZR1, not a collapse in demand; still, raw volume trails every other C7 model year badly and is well below the Corvette's typical run rate.

Brand desirability & image85
#4 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

America's sports car since 1953, with an enthusiast community and dedicated museum — an aspirational, beloved nameplate with a strong following that carried into the well-reviewed 2018 model year.

Deals & incentive availability80
#1 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

As dealers cleared 2017/2018 inventory ahead of the 2019 model year (including the anticipated ZR1), Corvettes carried substantial incentives — discounts reported as high as $15,000 off MSRP combined with GM Flex Cash offers — meaningful, buyer-favorable deals without the car being an unwanted model.

Model freshness38
#13 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

2018 is year five of the C7 generation (2014-2019, with a 2017 mid-cycle update that added the 8-speed automatic and bumped LT1 torque) — current but not cutting-edge, with C8 mid-engine anticipation already building and only one model year left before the all-new redesign.

Critical reception & awards85
#4 of 14 Sports CarsCompare all →

The Corvette Grand Sport was named to Car and Driver's 10Best Cars list for 2018, continuing the nameplate's strong run of comparison-test wins and award recognition late in the C7's lifecycle.
