The verdict
A mixed-report minivan, strong on space and held back by performance.
The 2018 Odyssey launched Honda's fifth-generation minivan, and the family basics are excellent. It has a genuinely adult-sized third row, Magic Slide second-row seats, more than 150 cu ft of cargo space with the seats out, and a 5-star NHTSA rating. As a first-year redesign, though, it is the weakest year of this generation for reliability. It is covered by 16 recall campaigns, including a connecting-rod bearing defect, and the volume trims use a 9-speed automatic with hesitant shifts. If you're shopping used, a 2020 or later Odyssey keeps nearly everything good about this van and leaves behind much of the launch-year trouble. If you buy a 2018, check that every recall has been completed.

Detailed scoring by subject
1Performance & PowertrainThe Odyssey's lowest-graded category.0.41F
2018 is the launch year of the fifth-generation Odyssey, a change year with a new body and a new direct-injected 3.5L V6. That V6 is the only engine on every trim (LX, EX, EX-L, EX-L Navi/RES, Touring, Elite).
This is the peak torque of the only powertrain. The naturally aspirated V6 makes it high in the rev range.
The volume EX and EX-L trims use the 9-speed automatic. Their estimated 0–60 time is about 7.0 s, slightly behind the 10-speed Touring and Elite that magazines mostly tested. Across the fifth generation, instrumented tests average about 6.8 s, which is quick for a minivan.
The V6 is smooth, linear and eager, with no turbo lag, and is among the strongest-feeling engines in the class. Variable Cylinder Management is occasionally noticeable. On the 9-speed trims, sluggish transmission response blunts how quickly the engine feels from a roll.
The volume LX, EX and EX-L trims get the 9-speed automatic, which reviewers criticised for slow, sometimes clunky shifts and hesitant kickdowns. Only the Touring and Elite get the smoother, quicker 10-speed. Both use a push-button shift-by-wire selector, and the 10-speed became standard on every trim for 2020.
The maximum rating is 3,500 lbs on the 10-speed Touring and Elite. The volume 9-speed trims are rated at 3,000 lbs, which is par or slightly below par for the class.
Every 2018 trim is front-wheel drive only, with no AWD at any price, while the 2018 Sienna offered AWD.
This is a pavement-focused family van, with low ground clearance, FWD only, and no skid plates, terrain modes or off-road trim. Gravel roads are about the limit.
There is one engine (3.5L V6), paired with either a 9-speed or a 10-speed automatic depending on trim, and no hybrid or plug-in option. The 2018 Pacifica offered a PHEV.
2Efficiency & RangeOne of the Odyssey's weakest categories.0.76F
The 9-speed volume trims and the 10-speed Touring/Elite carry identical EPA ratings. With no hybrid assist, the Odyssey sits at the thirsty end of the minivan class.
It is weak in stop-and-go driving, with no hybrid recovery, and the volume 9-speed trims lack idle stop.
Tall gearing and VCM keep the highway figure competitive for a V6 minivan.
This is total range on the 19.5-gallon tank at the EPA combined rating, roughly mid-pack for the class.
Regular fuel helps, but at 22 MPG combined the EPA annual estimate is among the highest in the minivan class.
Every trim runs on regular unleaded, with nothing to charge. Honda recommends premium only when towing.
3SafetyOne of the Odyssey's strongest categories.2.90B-
NHTSA rates the 2018 Odyssey, the first year of the fifth generation, 5 stars overall. It gets 5-star frontal and side ratings and a 4-star rollover rating.
The redesigned 2018 Odyssey earned an IIHS Top Safety Pick (not TSP+) with Good ratings in every crashworthiness test, including both small-overlap sides and the updated side test. The award applied only with optional front crash prevention and specific headlights, because no headlight variant rated Good.
For 2018, Honda Sensing (Collision Mitigation Braking, ACC with Low-Speed Follow, Lane Keeping Assist, Road Departure Mitigation) and Blind Spot Information with Cross Traffic Monitor are standard from the EX up. The base LX gets none of it. The volume EX/EX-L trims are well equipped, but the entry trim lacks key systems.
IIHS rates the Collision Mitigation Braking System Superior for vehicle-to-vehicle avoidance. No pedestrian AEB rating exists for this model year, and the system is optional rather than standard.
Blind Spot Information and Cross Traffic Monitor are standard on EX and above, which covers most sales, but they are absent on the LX. Both only alert, with no active intervention and no safe-exit warning.
The volume trims get LKAS and Road Departure Mitigation as part of Honda Sensing, and they work on well-marked highways. This first-generation tuning wanders and disengages more readily than later Honda systems, and the LX has no lane assistance at all.
Adaptive cruise with Low-Speed Follow (stop-and-go) comes with Honda Sensing on EX and above and is smooth in traffic. It is absent on the LX, and there is no integrated highway-assist mode.
No 2018 Odyssey trim offers hands-free driving, and every assist function requires hands on the wheel.
IIHS rates the halogen projectors with high-beam assist on the volume EX/EX-L trims Marginal and the LX's halogen projectors without high-beam assist Poor. Only the Touring/Elite LED reflectors reach Acceptable, and no variant is rated Good.
A tall greenhouse, low beltline and large side glass give excellent minivan sightlines. A multi-angle rearview camera is standard, but no 360-degree camera is available.
IIHS rates the LATCH hardware Good+, with four rear seating positions fully equipped. Wide power sliding doors and Magic Slide second-row seats (EX and above) make multiple car-seat installs easy.
4Space & ComfortThe Odyssey's best-graded category.3.11B
Volume EX/EX-L trims seat eight via the Multi-Function 2nd-row center seat; only the LX is a 7-seater.
Scored on the volume EX-L, whose standard moonroof costs 2 in of front headroom versus the LX/EX.
Front legroom is modest for a minivan at 40.9 in, identical across trims.
Generous second-row headroom even with the EX-L moonroof.
Second-row legroom matches the front row at 40.9 in, near the top of the minivan band.
The third row offers 38.1 in of legroom and 38.3 in of headroom, genuinely adult-usable, and the Magic Slide 2nd row (EX and up) eases access; the base LX lacks the sliding/walk-in 2nd row.
Large behind-2nd-row volume for the volume EX-L; behind the third row it still has 32.8 cu ft in a deep well.
With the 2nd row removed and 3rd row stowed the Odyssey swallows over 150 cu ft, among the biggest in the class (the 2nd-row seats must be removed, not stowed).
Magic Slide 2nd row, a deep under-floor 3rd-row well and, on upper trims, a built-in HondaVAC and 110V outlet make it one of the cleverest minivan cabins; the volume EX-L gets the seating tricks but not the vacuum or outlet.
Front seats are supportive with a 12-way power driver's seat and 4-way lumbar from EX up; reviewers praise long-trip comfort, though the removable Magic Slide 2nd-row seats are thinner-cushioned than rivals' captain's chairs.
The ride is controlled and comfortable, with reviewers calling it the best-controlled minivan; the 2018 EX/EX-L ride on 18-in wheels (19-in only on Elite).
Active Noise Cancellation is standard and the windshield uses acoustic glass from EX; the cabin is described as serene, though tire noise on coarse pavement is noted.
Tri-zone automatic climate and heated front seats arrive on the EX, with 2nd-row sunshades; ventilated seats are Elite-only and the base LX has single-zone automatic climate with no heated seats.
5Cost of OwnershipMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.05C
2018 is the launch year of the fifth-generation Odyssey (all-new for MY2018). The LX was the entry trim, with the 280-hp 3.5L V6 and a 9-speed automatic.
The EX-L (leather, power tailgate, moonroof, 8-inch Display Audio, Honda Sensing) is the volume trim. It used the 9-speed automatic; only the Touring and Elite got the 10-speed in 2018.
The 3.5L V6 is cheap to service, but 2018 was the first year of a new generation. It drew complaints and software updates for the 9-speed automatic, power sliding doors and infotainment, plus several recalls, so the estimate sits above the 2020 figure.
The 2018 Odyssey's 5-year window ended in 2023, at the peak of the inflated used market, which held residuals up. The Odyssey is the minivan resale leader. The estimate is set slightly below iSeeCars' model average to allow for first-year-of-generation issues.
Honda's new-vehicle limited warranty sits at the industry floor. That matches Toyota and FCA, and trails Kia's 5-year coverage on the Sedona.
The 5 yr / 60,000 mi powertrain coverage is the industry floor. Kia's 10 yr / 100,000 mi on the 2018 Sedona is the segment benchmark.
The 2018 Odyssey came with no complimentary scheduled maintenance; Honda Service Pass started with MY2023. Owners got 24/7 roadside assistance for the 3/36 warranty term, while Toyota included ToyotaCare (2 yr / 25,000 mi) on the 2018 Sienna.
$38,435 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (60% retained, or about $23,061) leaves about $15,374 in depreciation. Add the projected $5,000 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $20,374 in total.
6Reliability & QualityMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.10C
2018 is the first year of the fifth-generation Odyssey and its weakest for reliability. Consumer Reports rated it 'much worse than average', citing infotainment glitches and power sliding doors that would not close. J.D. Power's Quality & Reliability score of 64/100 ('Fair') is below the 2020's 70, so the two sources agree it trails later fifth-gen years.
Over this period Honda ranked among the top mainstream brands in Consumer Reports' brand reliability rankings and sat above the industry average in J.D. Power VDS. It trails Toyota and Lexus, which puts it at the top of the mid-pack band.
MY2018 is covered by 16 NHTSA campaigns, the heaviest record of any fifth-gen year. Several are serious: connecting-rod bearings that can wear and seize the engine; transmission-control-unit reboots that can shift into Park while driving; poorly coated rear brake caliper pistons; and power-sliding-door latches that may not latch. On top of those come sliding-door handle freezing, a defective third-row seat belt, unexpected airbag deployment from a software fault, the fuel pump recall, and repeated rear-camera and instrument-panel display campaigns.
The J35 3.5L V6 has a long high-mileage record, but the 2018 version is covered by the connecting-rod bearing recall. The volume LX/EX/EX-L trims use the ZF-sourced 9-speed automatic, widely criticized for rough, hesitant shifts; only Touring and Elite got the new 10-speed. With the TCU-reboot recall as well, this is a mixed history and sits below the 2020 (76).
This is the launch-year fifth-gen cabin. It is practical and solidly assembled, with soft-touch upper surfaces on EX-L and above, but has hard plastics in lower zones and an infotainment interface reviewers criticized. That is competitive for the class without leading it.
Launch-year build issues are well documented: sliding-door latch problems and doors that would not close, water getting into the sliding-door handle cables and the rear camera, and electronics complaints. Assembly is generally solid otherwise, so this sits at the low end of the mid band.
Honda has one of the densest US dealer networks, about 1,000 dealers, with generally strong service satisfaction.
The J35 V6 and platform components are shared with the Pilot, Passport and Ridgeline, so parts are plentiful and the aftermarket is deep. Typical repair costs sit below the minivan average.
7Technology & InfotainmentOne of the Odyssey's weakest categories.0.99F
The volume EX/EX-L uses an 8-in touchscreen; no larger screen was offered and the LX gets only a 5-in LCD.
The 2018 Display Audio brought back a physical volume knob and a simple layout, but first-year units drew widespread complaints of lag, freezes and CarPlay drop-outs that needed software updates.
Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are wired only and absent from the base LX entirely; wireless projection did not arrive until the 2025 refresh.
Native navigation with voice recognition is limited to EX-L Navi/RES and above; the volume EX-L relies on phone projection.
The 160-watt, 7-speaker system on the volume trims is adequate; the 550-watt, 11-speaker premium unit is Elite-only.
A TFT driver information display sits in the cluster on all trims, but it is a partial-digital layout with limited configurability rather than a full reconfigurable screen.
No over-the-air vehicle updates; fixes for the 2018 infotainment glitches were dealer- or USB-installed software updates.
HondaLink connected services and Wi-Fi hotspot are Touring/Elite-only; the volume trims get only the CabinControl app for rear audio and climate, with remote start via the key fob.
The EX-L has a front 2.5A USB, a console port and two in the 2nd row, all USB-A; the 110V outlet arrives on EX-L Navi/RES and wireless charging is Elite-only.
From EX up, Smart Entry with walk-away auto lock, remote start and power sliding doors are standard; the hands-free power tailgate is Touring/Elite-only and there is no phone-as-key.
Multi-angle rear camera with dynamic guidelines and BSI with cross-traffic monitor from EX, but parking sensors are Touring/Elite-only and no surround-view camera was offered.
No head-up display on any 2018 Odyssey trim.
8Use-Case FitMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.40C+
Power sliding doors and the Magic Slide 2nd row, which lets a car seat stay in place while kids reach the 3rd row, plus CabinWatch/CabinTalk on upper trims make it a family benchmark from the EX up.
Strong crash ratings and Honda Sensing (AEB, LKAS, ACC) plus BSI from the EX up, but in 2018 the base LX had none of the driver assists.
Adult-sized 3rd row, 32.8 cu ft behind it, tri-zone climate and 2nd-row sunshades from EX make long trips easy; rear entertainment and the 110V outlet need the EX-L Navi/RES or above.
A smooth, strong V6, light steering, auto brake hold and ACC on the volume trims make it easy in traffic; the 9-speed automatic on LX-EX-L can be hesitant at low speed.
A 280-hp V6 on regular fuel at about 22 MPG combined is typical for a gas minivan and well behind hybrid rivals.
A big body and 39.6-ft turning circle make it a handful in tight lots; parking sensors are Touring/Elite-only and there is no surround camera.
The volume 9-speed trims tow 3,000 lbs (3,500 on Touring/Elite), and with the 2nd row removed the 155-cu-ft hold handles bulky loads.
The 3.5L V6 is proven, but 2018 was the first year of the generation, with new 9-/10-speed transmissions and electronics that had teething troubles; there is no commercial Odyssey.
Removable 2nd-row seats help, but onboard power is a 150-watt outlet on upper trims only and there is no work-focused trim or upfit ecosystem.
Comfortable, quiet and controlled on the highway with roughly 430 miles of range from the 19.5-gal tank, plus ACC/LKAS from EX; the 2018 ACC lacks low-speed follow.
Front-wheel drive only with a 3,000-lb tow rating on the volume trims and no off-road equipment; Snow Mode traction management is the extent of it.
Deep 3rd-row well, one-motion fold-flat 3rd row, sliding/removable 2nd row and 150+ cu ft max volume make it exceptional with bulky gear.
9Driving ExperienceMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.43C+
Reviewers rate the 2018 Odyssey the best-controlled minivan, reining in body motion better than rivals, though handling is secure rather than engaging.
Electric steering is accurate and quick for a van (2.97 turns lock-to-lock) but light and filtered.
Four-wheel discs with a firm, progressive pedal; instrumented 70-0 stops for this generation are roughly average for the class.
The 280-hp V6 is strong and smooth, but the 9-speed on the volume LX-EX-L trims was criticized for hesitant, sometimes clunky low-speed shifts; the 10-speed on Touring/Elite is better.
Active Control Engine Mounts and Active Noise Cancellation keep the V6 hushed at cruise; it sounds sporty but not coarse under load.
A wide 39.6-ft turning circle for a front-drive minivan.
A commanding view and good adjustment from the 12-way seat, but the push-button shift-by-wire bank and some touch-only controls drew mixed reviews.
The most engaging minivan of its era thanks to the strong V6 and tidy body control, but still a family appliance.
10Value & Market PositionOne of the Odyssey's strongest categories.2.63C+
The $30,965 LX has the 280-hp V6, tri-zone climate and a rearview camera. However, it uses a 5-inch screen without Apple CarPlay/Android Auto and lacks Honda Sensing, blind-spot monitoring and power sliding doors, so most buyers step up to the EX. Honda Sensing didn't become standard on every trim until the MY2021 refresh.
The EX at about $34.9K adds Honda Sensing, power doors and Magic Slide seats, which is fair content for the money. Add the strong V6, segment-leading resale and a price below a comparably equipped Pacifica, and the Odyssey was good value in 2018. Car and Driver noted it was quicker, quieter, more efficient and cheaper than its comparison-test rivals.
Six well-spaced trims (LX, EX, EX-L, EX-L Navi/RES, Touring, Elite) span about $31K–$48K. Every van is FWD with the V6, though, and the 10-speed is limited to the Touring and Elite. The Sienna offered AWD and the Pacifica offered a PHEV.
The redesigned Odyssey sold strongly in its launch year at about 106K units, ahead of the Sienna. It trailed the Pacifica family (gas plus hybrid) and the fleet-heavy Dodge Grand Caravan.
Honda has a strong reputation with family buyers for reliability, resale value and low-drama ownership, and the Odyssey name has decades of minivan credibility. It is not aspirational, but it is very well regarded by its intended shoppers.
As a hot, all-new launch-year model, the 2018 Odyssey saw thin discounts early on, with modest dealer discounts and Honda Financial lease/APR offers appearing later in the model year. Incentives were smaller than the heavy cash on the Pacifica and Grand Caravan.
2018 is the first model year of an all-new fifth generation, with a new platform, 10-speed availability, Honda Sensing, CabinWatch/CabinTalk and Magic Slide seats. The mid-cycle refresh wasn't due until MY2021.
The 2018 Odyssey won KBB's Minivan Best Buy Award, and KBB called it the best family car in the world. It also earned an IIHS Top Safety Pick and a 5-star NHTSA rating. However, it finished second to the Chrysler Pacifica in Car and Driver's launch comparison test.
