The verdict
A mixed-report minivan, strong on safety and held back by performance.
The 2022 Odyssey is one of the best family minivans of its era. It is easy to install car seats in, earned top crash ratings (5-star NHTSA, IIHS Top Safety Pick+) and is the most enjoyable minivan to drive, thanks to a 280-hp V6. Its weak spots are running costs and capability: 22 MPG combined is about $3,050 a year in fuel, it is front-wheel drive only, and its warranty and tech were basic even when new. For a used-van shopper who wants space, safety and a proven powertrain more than fuel savings or AWD, it is a strong pick.

Detailed scoring by subject
1Performance & PowertrainThe Odyssey's lowest-graded category.0.43F
The 2022 Odyssey is a carry-over year of the fifth generation (2018–), the first year after the 2021 refresh; the 3.5L direct-injected V6 is the only engine on every trim (EX, EX-L, Touring, Elite — the base LX was dropped for 2022).
Peak torque of the standard and only powertrain. The naturally aspirated V6 makes it high in the rev range.
From 2020 on, every trim got the 10-speed, so the 2022 van is mechanically identical to the tested 10-speed Odysseys. Instrumented results run from 6.4 s (Car and Driver) to 7.6 s (Edmunds, Elite), and the MotorWeek median of 7.2 s is used. That is quick for a minivan.
The V6 is smooth, linear and eager with no turbo lag, and it is among the strongest-feeling engines in the class. Variable Cylinder Management and idle stop are occasionally noticeable, and it cannot match the near-silent low-speed running of the hybrid Sienna.
Every 2022 trim uses Honda's 10-speed automatic with shift-by-wire and paddles. The earlier 9-speed was retired after 2019. Shifts are generally smooth and quick, with occasional part-throttle hunting among the tall upper gears.
Honda rates every 2022 Odyssey trim at 3,500 lbs when properly equipped. That is par for the minivan class (Sienna and Carnival 3,500 lbs; Pacifica 3,600 lbs).
Every 2022 trim is front-wheel drive only, with no AWD at any price. The 2022 Sienna (AWD available) and Pacifica (AWD available) both offer it.
This is a pavement-focused family van, with low ground clearance, FWD only, and no skid plates, terrain modes or off-road trim. Gravel roads are about the limit.
The whole range has one powertrain (3.5L V6, 10-speed, FWD) and no hybrid or plug-in option. By contrast, the 2022 Sienna is hybrid-only and the Pacifica offers a PHEV.
2Efficiency & RangeOne of the Odyssey's weakest categories.0.76F
There is a single EPA configuration for 2022. With no hybrid assist, it sits with the gas Pacifica at the thirsty end of the minivan class.
It is weak in stop-and-go driving even with idle stop and cylinder deactivation, because there is no hybrid system to recover energy.
Tall 10-speed gearing and VCM keep the highway figure competitive for a V6 minivan.
Total range on the 19.5-gallon tank at the EPA combined rating. That is slightly more than the gas Pacifica and far short of the hybrid Sienna.
Regular fuel helps, but at 22 MPG combined the EPA annual estimate is among the highest in the minivan class.
Every trim runs on regular unleaded. There is no premium requirement and nothing to charge.
3SafetyThe Odyssey's best-graded category.3.32B+
NHTSA rates the 2022 Odyssey 5 stars overall, with 5-star frontal and side ratings and a 4-star rollover rating, which is the top of the minivan segment.
The 2022 Odyssey earned an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ with Good ratings in every crashworthiness test, including driver and passenger small overlap, moderate overlap, the original and updated side tests, roof strength and head restraints. The tougher updated moderate-overlap rear-passenger test, which it later failed, was not yet part of the 2022 criteria.
Honda Sensing (Collision Mitigation Braking, Adaptive Cruise with Low-Speed Follow, Lane Keeping Assist, Road Departure Mitigation, Traffic Sign Recognition) is standard on every 2022 trim. Blind Spot Information with Cross Traffic Monitor is missing from the base LX and only arrives on the EX and above; it did not become standard on all trims until MY2023.
IIHS rates the standard Collision Mitigation Braking Superior for vehicle-to-vehicle and Superior for daytime pedestrian avoidance. No nighttime pedestrian result was published for this model year, so it stops short of the top band.
Blind Spot Information and Rear Cross Traffic Monitor are standard on EX and above, which covers most of the sales mix, but they are absent on the LX. Both systems only alert, with no active steering or braking intervention and no safe-exit warning.
Standard LKAS and Road Departure Mitigation keep the van centred acceptably on well-marked highways. Reviewers note some wander and early disengagement on faded lines compared with newer camera/radar systems.
Adaptive Cruise Control with Low-Speed Follow (stop-and-go) is standard and smooth in traffic. There is no integrated highway-assist or traffic-jam-assist mode.
No 2022 Odyssey trim offers hands-free driving, and every Honda Sensing function requires hands on the wheel.
IIHS rates the LED headlights Acceptable. The rating is consistent across the range but short of Good.
A tall greenhouse, low beltline and large side glass give excellent minivan sightlines. A multi-angle rearview camera is standard, though this generation offers no 360-degree camera.
IIHS rates the LATCH hardware Good, with four rear seating positions fully equipped plus one tether-only position. Wide power sliding doors and Magic Slide second-row seats make multiple car-seat installs easy.
4Space & ComfortOne of the Odyssey's strongest categories.3.10B
The volume EX-L seats eight via the three-across Magic Slide second row with removable center seat; only the base LX is a 7-seater.
The volume EX-L carries the standard one-touch power moonroof, which cuts front headroom to 38.7 in; moonroof-free LX/EX trims get 40.7 in.
Published front legroom sits at the low end of the minivan band on paper, though seat travel feels ample in practice.
Generous second-row headroom even with the moonroof fitted on the volume EX-L.
Second-row legroom matches the front row and is near the top of the segment.
A genuinely adult-usable third row with 38.1 in legroom and 38.3 in headroom, three-across seating, and easy access through wide power sliding doors and the walk-in Magic Slide second row.
With the Magic Seat third row folded into the floor, the volume EX-L offers 86.6 cu ft behind row two — large, just short of the very top of the class.
Removing the Magic Slide seats and folding the third row opens a hold well beyond Pacifica (~140 cu ft) and Sienna (~101 cu ft).
Magic Slide second row (fore-aft and side-to-side), one-motion Magic Seat third row that folds into a deep well, and a big center console; the 115V outlet is Touring/Elite-only and the base LX lacks Magic Slide.
The volume EX-L brings leather, 8-way power driver's seat with 4-way power lumbar and memory; second and third rows are adult-sized and comfortable. Ventilated fronts are Elite-only.
Well-controlled, composed ride that leans a touch firmer than Sienna or Pacifica; the 19-in wheels on EX-L and up let sharp impacts through, but body motions are tidy.
Active Noise Cancellation on every trim keeps wind and road noise in check at cruise, but the V6 is audible under load and the 19-in wheels add some road noise.
Tri-zone automatic climate and heated front seats from the EX up, plus second-row sunshades on EX-L; ventilated front seats are Elite-only, the base LX lacks both tri-zone and heated seats, and no trim offers heated rear seats.
5Cost of OwnershipMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.80C-
2022 is a carry-over year of the fifth generation (MY2018 launch, MY2021 refresh); the only announced change was a new Radiant Red Metallic II color. The LX was still the entry trim for 2022 (it was dropped for 2023).
The EX-L (leather, power tailgate, 8-inch Display Audio) is the volume trim. Note that 2022 transactions during the chip shortage frequently ran at or above sticker.
The proven 3.5L V6 and 10-speed automatic are inexpensive to service, but unlike 2023-and-later Odysseys the 2022 predates Honda Service Pass, so the owner pays for every oil change and rotation. Set slightly above the 2024 estimate for that reason.
The Odyssey has the best resale value among minivans according to iSeeCars, and the 2022 benefited from the inflated used-car market. KBB's 3-year curve projected forward puts it a little below the aggregate model figures, so a conservative midpoint is used.
Honda's new-vehicle limited warranty is at the industry floor. It matches Toyota and Chrysler and trails Kia's 5-year coverage on the Carnival.
The 5 yr / 60,000 mi powertrain coverage is the industry floor. Kia's 10 yr / 100,000 mi on the Carnival is the segment benchmark.
The 2022 Odyssey came with no complimentary scheduled maintenance; Honda Service Pass started with MY2023. Owners got roadside assistance for the 3/36 warranty term and a HondaLink trial on equipped trims. Toyota offered ToyotaCare (2 yr / 25,000 mi) on the 2022 Sienna.
$39,935 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (55% retained, or about $21,964) leaves about $17,971 in depreciation. Add the projected $4,600 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $22,571 in total.
6Reliability & QualityOne of the Odyssey's strongest categories.2.93B-
The 2022 is the strongest fifth-generation Odyssey on reliability. Consumer Reports gives it an above-average reliability score, the only fifth-gen year to earn one, but J.D. Power owner ratings sit only around average. Together that puts it at the upper end of the mixed-signals band: ahead of the Pacifica and Voyager, behind the Sienna.
Honda has long ranked among the top mainstream brands in Consumer Reports' brand reliability rankings and sits above the industry average in J.D. Power VDS. It trails Toyota and Lexus, which puts it at the top of the mid-pack band.
MY2022 is covered by nine NHTSA campaigns, a heavy record. Two are serious: an airbag-control software error that can deploy the side and curtain airbags unexpectedly (2018–2022 Odyssey only, 440,830 units) and Honda's broad low-pressure fuel pump recall. Others cover the rear camera display (MOST cable connector), mirror heating pads, two front-passenger occupant-sensor campaigns, and small 2022-only campaigns for second-row seat-rail locks and tires. There's no single powertrain failure, but the volume and the airbag-software defect hold it at the bottom of the typical band.
The 2022 Odyssey uses the 3.5L J35 V6 with the 10-speed automatic, standard on every trim since MY2020. The J35 family has a long high-mileage track record, and the 10-speed has shown no systemic failure pattern since the early-generation 9-speed was dropped.
The cabin carries the 2021 refresh: soft-touch upper surfaces and solid switchgear on EX-L and above, with hard plastics in lower zones and a dated 8-inch display. That is competitive with the class, though short of the Carnival's upscale trims.
J.D. Power named the 2022 Odyssey the minivan with the highest initial quality, a strong assembly signal from the Lincoln, Alabama plant. Consumer Reports still cites build-quality and noise/leak complaints, and the 2022-only seat-rail and tire campaigns are small production lapses, which keeps it out of the top band.
Honda has one of the densest US dealer networks, about 1,000 dealers, with generally strong service satisfaction.
The J35 V6 and platform components are shared with the Pilot, Passport and Ridgeline, so parts are plentiful and the aftermarket is deep. Typical repair costs sit below the minivan average.
7Technology & InfotainmentOne of the Odyssey's weakest categories.1.25D
The volume EX-L uses the 8-inch Display Audio touchscreen, the largest center screen offered; the 10.2-inch screen on Touring/Elite is the rear-entertainment display.
The 8-inch system, updated for the 2021 refresh, has a physical volume knob and a logical home screen, but its processor and graphics feel dated against Uconnect 5 and newer rivals.
Wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard from the EX up but absent on the base LX, and no 2022 trim offers wireless projection (it arrived with the 2025 refresh).
Basic command-style voice control; native Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation is offered only on Touring and Elite, so most owners of the volume EX-L use phone projection.
A 160-watt, 7-speaker system is standard through Touring; only the Elite gets the 550-watt, 11-speaker setup, and there is no branded premium audio, unlike Pacifica (Harman Kardon/Alpine) or Sienna (JBL).
Analog speedometer flanked by a color TFT driver information display; not the larger, configurable full-digital cluster some rivals offer.
No whole-vehicle over-the-air updates; the 2022 system is limited to dealer or USB software updates plus map updates on navigation-equipped trims.
HondaLink app basics are available from the EX up, but subscription remote services and the Wi-Fi hotspot are limited to Touring/Elite, and there is no phone-as-key.
The volume EX-L has one front and two second-row USB ports and nothing for the third row; third-row USB and the 115V outlet are Touring/Elite-only, wireless charging is Elite-only, and the LX has a single port.
Smart Entry with Walk Away Auto Lock, remote engine start and power sliding doors from the EX up, and a power tailgate from EX-L; hands-free tailgate is top-trim only, the base LX lacks Smart Entry, and there is no phone-as-key.
A multi-angle rearview camera is standard, but parking sensors are Touring/Elite-only and no trim offers a 360-degree camera.
No head-up display on any 2022 Odyssey trim.
8Use-Case FitMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.53C+
The segment benchmark for family logistics: Magic Slide second row (EX and up) slides side-to-side for three-across car seats or a walk-through aisle, IIHS rates the LATCH hardware Good, power sliding doors and a Rear Seat Reminder are standard.
5-star NHTSA overall, a 2022 IIHS Top Safety Pick+ with Good ratings across the board, and Honda Sensing standard on every trim; blind-spot monitoring is missing only on the base LX.
Roomy second and third rows, tri-zone climate and second-row sunshades on the volume EX-L, and a 32.8 cu ft well behind row three. Rear entertainment, CabinWatch/CabinTalk, third-row USB and the 115V outlet are Touring/Elite-only.
The smooth V6/10-speed, standard ACC with Low-Speed Follow and excellent outward view make traffic easy, but it is a 205-inch van with a firm-edged ride.
At 19/28/22 MPG, the gas-only V6 costs far more per mile than the hybrid-only 2022 Sienna (36 MPG combined); it runs on regular fuel and maintenance costs are average.
A 205.2-in-long, 78.5-in-wide van with a 39.6-ft turning diameter. Visibility is excellent and a multi-angle rear camera is standard, but parking sensors are Touring/Elite-only and no 360-degree camera is offered.
A 3,500-lb tow rating and up to 155.8 cu ft of cargo with the second row removed make it a capable light hauler, but it is FWD-only, has no bed and no work-oriented trim.
The 3.5L V6 and 10-speed are proven Honda hardware, but there is no fleet or cargo variant and no wear-resistant interior option, so it is unproven under work abuse.
Removable second-row seats open a big flat floor, but the 115V outlet is Touring/Elite-only, USB coverage is thin on the volume EX-L, and there is no upfit ecosystem or washable interior.
A spacious, comfortable cabin with Active Noise Cancellation and standard ACC/LKAS. Its roughly 430-mile range (19.5 gal at 22 MPG) trails the Sienna hybrid, and it has no unified highway-assist mode.
FWD-only with low ground clearance and no terrain modes. It can tow 3,500 lb of toys and swallow camping gear, but it is pavement-bound next to the AWD-available Sienna and Pacifica.
Class-leading flexibility: 32.8–38.6 cu ft behind the third row, a Magic Seat third row that folds into the floor, and removable second-row seats for up to 155.8 cu ft on the EX-L.
9Driving ExperienceMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.54C+
Widely regarded as the best-handling minivan: tight body control and a composed chassis, though it is still a 4,500-lb van.
Accurate, well-weighted electric steering with little feedback, which still puts it ahead of most minivan rivals.
A firm, linear pedal and predictable response, with stopping distances in the middle of the class.
The 280-hp V6 is smooth and strong, but the 10-speed automatic sometimes hunts at part throttle and Idle Stop restarts are noticeable.
The V6 is quiet at cruise and sounds good under load; it is more refined in character than Sienna's four-cylinder hybrid, but louder overall than electrified rivals.
Honda's published curb-to-curb turning diameter is about average for a full-size minivan.
A commanding seating position with a wide adjustment range, clear sightlines and easy entry; the push-button shifter and dated center-stack graphics draw minor complaints.
Enthusiasts single it out among minivans for its punchy V6 and responsive chassis, though it is still a large FWD van.
10Value & Market PositionMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.08C
The $33,265 LX includes Honda Sensing, the 280-hp V6, tri-zone climate and Magic Slide second-row seats. However, it has a basic 5-inch audio unit without Apple CarPlay/Android Auto and manual sliding doors, so most buyers have to step up to the EX for the essentials. The hybrid Sienna LE comes with more standard tech.
Strong V6 performance, flexible seating and Honda reliability are fair content for the price, but the gas-only 22-mpg-combined powertrain loses running-cost value to the hybrid-only Sienna. 2022 shortage-era dealer markups also eroded the real-world value.
Five well-spaced trims (LX, EX, EX-L, Touring, Elite) span about $33K–$49K, a wider price spread than in 2024 thanks to the LX. Every van is FWD with the V6, though, while Sienna and Pacifica offer AWD and Pacifica also offers a PHEV.
Odyssey sales fell sharply in calendar 2022 as supply constraints hit production, trailing the Pacifica. Demand was not the problem, and sales rebounded to 71.5K in 2023.
Honda has a strong reputation with family buyers for reliability, resale value and low-drama ownership, and the Odyssey name has decades of minivan credibility. It is not aspirational, but very well regarded by its intended shoppers.
The 2022 model year sold during the semiconductor shortage, when inventory was thin and minivans routinely went at or above MSRP. Factory incentives on the Odyssey were minimal.
2022 is the fifth model year of the generation that launched for MY2018. It came one year after the MY2021 mid-cycle refresh, which updated styling, the infotainment and safety equipment, so it is mid-cycle and current but not cutting-edge next to the all-new 2021 Sienna and 2022 Carnival.
Reviewers consistently praise the Odyssey's driving dynamics, V6 and Magic Slide seating, and it sits at or near the top of minivan rankings. However, the newer Sienna (efficiency) and Carnival (style, value) often won 2022 comparisons.
