The verdict
A mixed-report minivan, strong on space and held back by performance.
The 2024 Odyssey is still one of the most livable family vans you can buy. It seats eight, has a third row adults can actually use, makes car seats easy thanks to the sliding Magic Slide second row, and drives more like a car than any rival. What holds it back is age and fuel. It manages 22 MPG combined on gas only, offers no AWD, and its wired-only 8-inch screen was replaced by the 2025 refresh. Buy it for space, safety and Honda durability; look at the hybrid Sienna if running costs come first.

Detailed scoring by subject
1Performance & PowertrainThe Odyssey's lowest-graded category.0.43F
The 2024 Odyssey is a carry-over year of the fifth generation (2018–), after the 2021 refresh and before the 2025 facelift; the 3.5L direct-injected V6 is the sole engine on every trim (EX, EX-L, Sport, Touring, Elite).
Peak torque of the standard and only powertrain; a naturally aspirated V6 makes it high in the rev range.
Instrumented tests of the mechanically identical 10-speed Odyssey span 6.4 s (Car and Driver) to 7.6 s (Edmunds, Elite); the median MotorWeek figure of 7.2 s is used as representative. Quick for a minivan.
The V6 is smooth, linear and eager with no turbo lag, among the strongest-feeling engines in the class. Variable Cylinder Management and idle stop occasionally make themselves felt, and it lacks the near-silent low-speed running of the hybrid Sienna.
Every 2024 trim uses Honda's 10-speed automatic with shift-by-wire and paddles; shifts are generally smooth and quick, with occasional part-throttle hunting among the tall upper gears.
Honda rates every 2024 Odyssey at 3,500 lbs when properly equipped — par for the minivan class (Sienna and Carnival 3,500; Pacifica 3,600).
Front-wheel drive only on every 2024 trim; no AWD at any price, unlike the Sienna (available AWD) and Pacifica (available AWD).
A pavement-focused family van: low ground clearance, FWD only, no skid plates, terrain modes or off-road trim. Gravel roads are about the limit.
One powertrain — 3.5L V6, 10-speed, FWD — across the whole range, with no hybrid or plug-in option, while the Sienna is hybrid-only and the Pacifica offers a PHEV.
2Efficiency & RangeOne of the Odyssey's weakest categories.0.76F
There is a single EPA configuration for 2024. Without hybrid assist it sits with the gas Pacifica at the thirsty end of the minivan class.
Weak in stop-and-go driving even with idle stop and cylinder deactivation; there is no hybrid to recover energy.
Tall 10-speed gearing and VCM keep the highway figure competitive for a V6 minivan.
EPA total range from the 19.5-gallon tank; a little more than the gas Pacifica, far short of a hybrid Sienna.
Regular fuel helps, but at 22 MPG combined EPA's annual estimate is among the highest in the minivan class.
Honda specifies regular unleaded on every trim. There is no premium requirement and nothing to charge.
3SafetyOne of the Odyssey's strongest categories.3.20B+
NHTSA rates the 2024 Odyssey 5 stars overall with 5-star frontal and side results and a 4-star rollover rating (13.6% rollover risk) — the top of the minivan segment.
The 2024 Odyssey earned an IIHS Top Safety Pick (not TSP+) with Good small-overlap (driver and passenger), Good original moderate-overlap and Good side results, but it rates Poor in the updated moderate-overlap test that measures rear-passenger protection — the gap that keeps it off TSP+ and below the top band.
Honda Sensing is standard on every 2024 Odyssey trim (LX through Elite): Collision Mitigation Braking, Adaptive Cruise Control with Low-Speed Follow, Lane Keeping Assist, Road Departure Mitigation, Traffic Sign Recognition, plus Blind Spot Information with Rear Cross Traffic Monitor (made standard on all trims from MY2023).
IIHS rates the Odyssey's pedestrian front-crash prevention only Acceptable: it avoided the crossing-child daytime scenarios and most crossing-adult nighttime runs with high-beam assist, but did not post the Good/Superior results newer-generation systems achieve.
Blind Spot Information and Rear Cross Traffic Monitor are standard on every 2024 trim, but both are alert-only with no active steering or braking intervention and no safe-exit warning.
Standard LKAS with Road Departure Mitigation centers acceptably on well-marked highways, but reviewers describe it as a generation behind Honda's newer camera/radar tuning, with some wander and early disengagement on faded lines.
Adaptive Cruise Control with Low-Speed Follow (stop-and-go) is standard and works smoothly in traffic, but there is no unified highway-assist mode or traffic-jam assist, and resume behavior after a full stop needs driver input.
No hands-free driving system is offered on any 2024 Odyssey trim; all Honda Sensing functions require hands on the wheel.
IIHS rates the LED-reflector headlights Acceptable on all trims, with standard high-beam assist — consistent across the range but short of Good.
Tall greenhouse, low beltline and large side glass give excellent sightlines typical of minivans; a standard multi-angle rearview camera helps, though a 360-degree camera is not offered on this generation.
IIHS rates the LATCH hardware Good with four rear seating positions fully equipped plus an extra tether-only position; wide power sliding doors and Magic Slide second-row seats make multiple car-seat installs and third-row access unusually easy.
4Space & ComfortThe Odyssey's best-graded category.3.32B+
Every 2024 Odyssey trim (EX, EX-L, Sport, Touring, Elite) seats eight via the three-across Magic Slide second row.
Honda publishes 40.7 in for the moonroof-free EX; the moonroof standard from EX-L up cuts it to 38.7 in.
Published front legroom sits at the low end of the minivan band on paper, though seat travel feels ample in practice.
Generous second-row headroom, among the roomiest in the class.
Second-row legroom matches the front row and is near the top of the segment.
A genuinely adult-usable third row with 38.1 in legroom and 38.3 in headroom, three-across seating, and easy access through wide power sliding doors and the walk-in Magic Slide second row.
With the Magic Seat third row folded into the floor, the volume EX-L offers 86.6 cu ft behind row two — large, just short of the very top of the class.
Removing the Magic Slide seats and folding the third row opens a hold well beyond Pacifica (~140 cu ft) and Sienna (~101 cu ft).
Magic Slide second row (fore-aft and side-to-side), one-motion Magic Seat third row that folds into a deep well, big center console, and a 115V outlet on Touring/Elite; HondaVAC remains Elite-only and the trims most people buy miss the 115V outlet.
Supportive front seats with power adjustment and driver memory from EX-L, plus comfortable, adult-sized second- and third-row seats; Elite adds ventilated fronts. Front bolstering on lower trims is a little less plush than the top rivals'.
Well-controlled, composed ride that leans a touch firmer than Sienna or Pacifica; sharp impacts come through, but body motions are tidy.
Active Noise Cancellation and an acoustic windshield keep wind and road noise in check at cruise, but the V6 is audible under load and some road noise from the 19-in wheels on upper trims gets through.
Tri-zone automatic climate, heated front seats and second-row sunshades are standard on every 2024 trim, which is generous; ventilated front seats and a heated steering wheel are limited to the Elite, and no trim offers heated rear seats.
5Cost of OwnershipMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.81C-
The 2024 Odyssey is a carry-over year of the fifth generation (launched MY2018, refreshed MY2021), before the MY2025 refresh dropped the EX. The EX was the entry trim for 2024.
The EX-L is the volume trim, adding leather, a power tailgate and the 8-inch infotainment upgrades over the EX. It costs a little less than the 2024 Sienna XLE ($43,890).
The mature 3.5L V6 and 10-speed automatic are inexpensive to service, and Honda Service Pass covers routine oil changes and rotations for 2 years. This estimate sits between CarEdge's low figure, which excludes warranty work, and the higher class-average estimates. It is above the hybrid Sienna, which needs less brake and drivetrain service.
The Odyssey holds value well for a gas minivan but trails the hybrid Sienna. The figure is the midpoint between CarEdge's projection and KBB's lower 5-year residual.
Honda's standard new-vehicle limited warranty is at the industry floor. It matches Toyota and Chrysler and trails Kia's 5-year coverage on the Carnival.
The 5 yr / 60,000 mi powertrain coverage is the industry floor. Kia's 10 yr / 100,000 mi on the Carnival is the segment benchmark.
Honda Service Pass, introduced for MY2023 Hondas, covers select factory-scheduled maintenance (oil and filter, tire rotation, inspections) for 2 yr / 24,000 mi. Roadside assistance runs for the 3/36 warranty term, and a HondaLink trial is included. The package is slightly narrower than ToyotaCare and shorter than Hyundai/Kia programs.
$42,285 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (54% retained, or about $22,834) leaves about $19,451 in depreciation. Add the projected $4,200 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $23,651 in total.
6Reliability & QualityOne of the Odyssey's strongest categories.2.98B-
Both major sources put the 2024 Odyssey squarely at average: Consumer Reports rates its reliability about average versus other 2024 models, and J.D. Power owners give it a 77/100 Quality & Reliability score (JDP's 70–80 'Average' band). That's ahead of the Pacifica/Voyager but behind the Sienna.
Honda consistently ranks among the top mainstream brands in Consumer Reports' brand reliability rankings and sits above the industry average in J.D. Power VDS, but it trails Toyota and Lexus, so it lands at the top of the mid-pack band.
MY2024 has three NHTSA campaigns. Two are narrow: a steering-gear recall covering 186 units and an aftermarket wheelchair-restraint recall covering 1,019 vans. The third, a front-passenger occupant-classification airbag sensor recall, spans Honda's lineup. Nothing is systemic to this model year, but the fifth generation as a whole has a busy record (sliding doors, the 2018–2022 SRS campaigns).
The 2024 Odyssey uses the 3.5L J35 V6 with the 10-speed automatic, standard on every trim since MY2020. The J35 family has a long high-mileage track record, and the 10-speed has shown no systemic failure pattern since the early-generation 9-speed was dropped.
The 2024 is the last pre-refresh year: the cabin from the 2021 update has soft-touch upper surfaces and solid switchgear, but the dated 8-inch display and hard plastics on lower trims leave it behind the Carnival's upscale trims and the refreshed 2025.
Assembly at Honda's Lincoln, Alabama plant is generally consistent, and the owner quality score is average-to-solid. Scattered owner complaints and the steering-gear tightening recall keep it out of the top band.
Honda has one of the densest US dealer networks (about 1,000 dealers), and 2024 Odyssey owners rate the dealership experience well.
The J35 V6 and platform components are shared with the Pilot, Passport and Ridgeline, so parts are plentiful and the aftermarket is deep. Typical repair costs sit below the minivan average.
7Technology & InfotainmentOne of the Odyssey's weakest categories.1.36D
Every 2024 Odyssey uses the same 8-inch Display Audio touchscreen; the 9-inch unit arrived with the 2025 refresh. The 10.2-inch screen on Touring/Elite is the rear-entertainment display, not the center screen.
The 8-inch system has a physical volume knob and logical home screen, but its processor and graphics feel dated against Uconnect 5 and Toyota's newer system; this is the slower unit the 2025 refresh replaced with a faster one.
Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard on every trim but wired only; wireless projection did not arrive until the 2025 refresh.
Basic command-style voice control; native Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation is offered only on Touring and Elite, so most owners use phone projection.
A 7-speaker system is standard through Touring; only the Elite gets the 500-watt, 11-speaker setup, and there is no branded premium audio, unlike Pacifica (Harman Kardon) or Sienna (JBL).
A color TFT driver information display is standard, but it is not the larger, configurable full-digital cluster rivals offer, and its graphics are a generation old.
No whole-vehicle over-the-air updates; the 2024 system is limited to dealer or USB software updates plus map updates on navigation-equipped trims.
The HondaLink app offers remote lock and vehicle status, but full remote functions and the Wi-Fi hotspot are a paid subscription limited to Touring/Elite, and there is no phone-as-key.
USB ports reach all three rows only on Touring/Elite, and the base EX has a single front port; the 115V outlet is Touring/Elite-only and wireless charging is Elite-only. The 2025 refresh added more USB-C ports and made wireless charging standard.
Smart Entry with Walk Away Auto Lock, push-button start, remote engine start and power sliding doors are standard on every trim; a power tailgate starts at EX-L, but hands-free access is Elite-only and there is no phone-as-key.
A multi-angle rearview camera is standard, but parking sensors are Touring/Elite-only and no trim offers a 360-degree camera, which Sienna, Carnival and Pacifica all do.
No head-up display on any 2024 Odyssey trim.
8Use-Case FitMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.53C+
The segment benchmark for family logistics: Magic Slide second row slides side-to-side for three-across car seats or a walk-through aisle, IIHS rates the LATCH hardware Good across four positions, power sliding doors are standard, and a Rear Seat Reminder is standard on every trim.
5-star NHTSA overall, a 2024 IIHS Top Safety Pick, and Honda Sensing plus blind-spot monitoring standard on every trim. It falls short of the top band because it rates Poor in IIHS's updated moderate-overlap test, which measures rear-passenger protection.
Roomy second and third rows, standard tri-zone climate and second-row sunshades, and a 32.8 cu ft well behind row three. Touring/Elite add rear entertainment, CabinWatch/CabinTalk and the 115V outlet, but lower trims have thin USB coverage in the back rows.
The smooth V6/10-speed, standard ACC with Low-Speed Follow and excellent outward view make traffic easy, but it is a 205-inch van with a firm-edged ride.
At 19/28/22 MPG, the gas-only V6 costs far more per mile than the standard-hybrid Sienna (36 MPG combined); it runs on regular fuel and maintenance costs are average.
A 205.2-in-long, 78.5-in-wide van with a 39.6-ft turning diameter. Visibility is excellent and a multi-angle rear camera is standard, but parking sensors are Touring/Elite-only and no 360-degree camera is offered.
A 3,500-lb tow rating and up to 158 cu ft of cargo with the second row removed make it a capable light hauler, but it is FWD-only, has no bed and no work-oriented trim.
The 3.5L V6 and 10-speed are proven Honda hardware, but there is no fleet or cargo variant and no wear-resistant interior option, so it is unproven under work abuse.
Removable second-row seats open a big flat floor, but the 115V outlet is Touring/Elite-only, USB coverage is thin on lower trims, and there is no upfit ecosystem or washable interior.
A spacious, comfortable cabin with Active Noise Cancellation and standard ACC/LKAS. Its roughly 430-mile range (19.5 gal at 22 MPG) trails the Sienna hybrid, and it has no unified highway-assist mode.
FWD-only with low ground clearance and no terrain modes. It can tow 3,500 lb of toys and swallow camping gear, but it is pavement-bound next to the AWD-available Sienna and Pacifica.
Class-leading flexibility: 32.8–38.6 cu ft behind the third row, a one-motion Magic Seat that folds into the floor, and removable second-row seats for up to 155.8–158 cu ft.
9Driving ExperienceMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.54C+
Widely regarded as the best-handling minivan: tight body control and a composed chassis, though it is still a 4,500-lb van.
Accurate, well-weighted electric steering with little feedback, which still puts it ahead of most minivan rivals.
A firm, linear pedal and predictable response, with stopping distances in the middle of the class.
The 280-hp V6 is smooth and strong, but the 10-speed automatic sometimes hunts at low speed and Idle Stop restarts are noticeable.
The V6 is quiet at cruise and sounds good under load; it is more refined in character than Sienna's four-cylinder hybrid, but louder overall than electrified rivals.
Honda's published curb-to-curb turning diameter is about average for a full-size minivan.
A commanding seating position with a wide adjustment range, clear sightlines and easy entry; the push-button shifter and dated center-stack graphics draw minor complaints.
Enthusiasts single it out among minivans for its punchy V6 and responsive chassis, though it is still a large FWD van.
10Value & Market PositionMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.60C+
The 2024 lineup starts at the EX ($39,215). It comes with Honda Sensing, power sliding doors, tri-zone climate, heated front seats, a moonroof and the Magic Slide second row, a well-equipped entry point. However, the hybrid Sienna LE is priced about the same, and the Carnival LX starts several thousand dollars lower.
A 280-hp V6, a flexible second row, a strong reliability reputation and family features such as CabinWatch/CabinTalk on upper trims deliver solid content. However, the gas-only powertrain (19/28/22 mpg) gives up running-cost value to the hybrid-only Sienna at a similar sticker price.
Five well-spaced trims (EX, EX-L, Sport, Touring, Elite) span about $39K–$51K, but there are no configuration choices: every van is FWD with the V6. Sienna and Pacifica offer AWD, and Pacifica also offers a PHEV.
In 2024 the Odyssey was the #2 US minivan, ahead of Sienna and Carnival and behind only the Pacifica, with sales up 7% year over year.
Honda has a strong reputation with family buyers for reliability, resale value and low-drama ownership, and the Odyssey name has decades of minivan credibility. It is not aspirational, but brand perception among its intended shoppers is very positive.
As inventory normalized in 2024, Honda ran regular special-APR and lease programs on the Odyssey, and the outgoing pre-refresh 2024 vans saw dealer discounts once the 2025s arrived. Incentives were real but modest, without desperation pricing.
The fifth generation launched for MY2018 and was refreshed for MY2021, so 2024 is the seventh model year on the platform with carry-over changes. Another refresh followed for MY2025, so a 2024 buyer gets an aging design with no hybrid.
The Odyssey is well reviewed for its driving feel, practicality and Magic Slide seating, and it earned U.S. News Best Minivan for the Money and for Families along with an IIHS Top Safety Pick. Comparison tests increasingly favored the Sienna for efficiency and the Carnival for freshness.
