The verdict
A mixed-report minivan, strong on space and held back by performance.
The 2019 Odyssey is one of the best family vans of its era. Adults fit in all three rows, it has 5-star crash ratings, the Magic Slide second row makes car-seat duty easy, and reviewers called it the best-driving minivan. The trade-offs are 22 MPG combined from a gas-only V6, no AWD at any price, and the early-generation problems of a second model year: 20 NHTSA recall campaigns and a 9-speed automatic on the volume trims that is clunkier than the 10-speed Honda made standard for 2020. Skip the base LX, which goes without Honda Sensing and CarPlay, and check that every recall has been done before you buy.

Detailed scoring by subject
1Performance & PowertrainThe Odyssey's lowest-graded category.0.37F
The 2019 Odyssey is the second model year of the fifth generation (2018–) and largely carries over from 2018. The direct-injected 3.5L V6 is the only engine on every trim.
This is the peak torque of the only powertrain. The naturally aspirated V6 makes it high in the rev range.
The volume EX and EX-L trims use the 9-speed automatic in 2019. Published instrumented results mostly cover the 10-speed Touring and Elite (6.4–7.6 s), and estimates for the 9-speed EX-L are about 7.0 s, so a mid-range 7.2 s is used. That is quick for a minivan.
The V6 is smooth, linear and eager with no turbo lag, and it is among the strongest-feeling engines in the class. Variable Cylinder Management is occasionally noticeable, and idle stop comes only with the 10-speed trims.
In 2019 the volume LX, EX and EX-L trims use the ZF-sourced 9-speed automatic. Reviewers called it the less polished unit, citing sluggish downshifts, occasional hunting and low-speed lurches. The 10-speed on the Touring and Elite is smoother, and Honda made it standard across the range for 2020.
The maximum rating, available on the 10-speed Touring and Elite, is 3,500 lbs, which is par for the minivan class. The volume 9-speed trims are rated at 3,000 lbs.
Every 2019 trim is front-wheel drive only, with no AWD at any price, while the 2019 Sienna offered AWD.
This is a pavement-focused family van, with low ground clearance, FWD only, and no skid plates, terrain modes or off-road trim. Gravel roads are about the limit.
There is one engine (a 3.5L V6 with FWD), offered with either a 9-speed or a 10-speed by trim. There is no hybrid or plug-in option, while the 2019 Pacifica offered a PHEV.
2Efficiency & RangeOne of the Odyssey's weakest categories.0.76F
Both 2019 transmissions earn the same EPA rating, so the volume 9-speed EX/EX-L matches the 10-speed trims. With no hybrid assist, it sits at the thirsty end of the minivan class.
It is weak in stop-and-go driving because there is no hybrid system to recover energy, and the volume 9-speed trims lack idle stop.
Tall gearing and Variable Cylinder Management keep the highway figure competitive for a V6 minivan.
This is total range on the 19.5-gallon tank at the EPA combined rating, roughly mid-pack for the class.
Regular fuel helps, but at 22 MPG combined the EPA annual estimate is among the highest in the minivan class.
Every trim runs on regular unleaded, with nothing to charge. Honda recommends premium only when towing.
3SafetyOne of the Odyssey's strongest categories.2.90B-
NHTSA rates the 2019 Odyssey, a carry-over year of the fifth generation that began in 2018, 5 stars overall. It gets 5-star frontal and side ratings and a 4-star rollover rating.
The 2019 Odyssey earned an IIHS Top Safety Pick (not TSP+), with Good ratings in every crashworthiness test, including both small-overlap sides and the updated side test. The award applied only with optional front crash prevention and specific headlights, because no headlight variant rated Good.
For 2019, Honda Sensing (Collision Mitigation Braking, ACC with Low-Speed Follow, Lane Keeping Assist, Road Departure Mitigation) and Blind Spot Information with Cross Traffic Monitor are standard from the EX up. The base LX gets none of it. The volume EX/EX-L trims are well equipped, but the entry trim lacks key systems; Honda Sensing became standard on every trim only with the MY2021 refresh.
IIHS rates the optional Collision Mitigation Braking System Superior for vehicle-to-vehicle avoidance. No pedestrian AEB rating was published for this model year, and the system is optional rather than standard.
Blind Spot Information and Cross Traffic Monitor are standard on EX and above, which covers most sales, but they are absent on the LX. Both only alert, with no active intervention and no safe-exit warning.
The volume trims get LKAS and Road Departure Mitigation as part of Honda Sensing, and they work on well-marked highways. This pre-refresh tuning wanders and disengages more readily than later Honda systems, and the LX has no lane assistance at all.
Adaptive cruise with Low-Speed Follow (stop-and-go) comes with Honda Sensing on EX and above and is smooth in traffic. It is absent on the LX, and there is no integrated highway-assist mode.
No 2019 Odyssey trim offers hands-free driving, and every assist function requires hands on the wheel.
IIHS rates the halogen projectors with high-beam assist on the volume EX/EX-L trims Marginal and the LX's halogen projectors without high-beam assist Poor. Only the Touring/Elite LED reflectors reach Acceptable, and no variant is rated Good.
A tall greenhouse, low beltline and large side glass give excellent minivan sightlines. A multi-angle rearview camera is standard, but no 360-degree camera is available.
IIHS rates the LATCH hardware Good+. Wide power sliding doors and Magic Slide second-row seats (EX and above) make installing multiple car seats easy.
4Space & ComfortThe Odyssey's best-graded category.3.10B
The volume EX-L seats eight with the Multi-Function 2nd-row center seat; only the base LX is a seven-seater.
The moonroof standard from EX-L up costs two inches of front headroom versus the LX/EX.
Front legroom is adequate but short of the segment's roomiest front rows.
Generous second-row headroom even with the moonroof.
Second-row legroom is among the best in the class, and the Magic Slide seats can add more.
With 38.1 in of legroom and 38.3 in of headroom, adults fit in the third row. The Magic Slide second row gives walk-in access from EX up, though the LX's fixed second row makes access harder.
Behind the second row with the third row folded, there is a large cargo hold, though it is a little smaller than the Pacifica and Sienna offer.
With the second-row seats removed the van holds a huge cargo load. The second row comes out rather than stowing in the floor.
Clever solutions include Magic Slide second-row seats with a removable center seat, a deep rear storage well and the One-Motion fold-flat third row. The HondaVAC in-car vacuum and 110V outlet are reserved for the upper trims.
Supportive seats in all three rows are well regarded. The EX-L driver gets 12-way power with lumbar and memory, but the passenger seat is only 4-way.
Reviewers describe a smooth ride that absorbs bumps without float. Over sharp impacts it is firmer than the Sienna.
Active Noise Cancellation is standard, and the EX-L adds an acoustic windshield. Road noise is about average for minivans, and only the Elite gets acoustic door glass.
From EX up, tri-zone automatic climate control, heated front seats and second-row sunshades are standard. Ventilated seats and a heated wheel are Elite-only, and no trim offers heated rear seats.
5Cost of OwnershipMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.90C-
2019 is the second model year of the fifth generation (MY2018 launch) and a carry-over year with minor price increases. The LX remained the entry trim, still on the 9-speed automatic.
The EX-L (leather, power tailgate, moonroof, Honda Sensing) is the volume trim. The 2019 was sold in a pre-shortage buyer's market, so transaction prices typically ran below sticker.
The 3.5L V6 is inexpensive to service, but the 2019 predates Honda Service Pass, so owners pay for all scheduled maintenance. Early fifth-generation vans carried known issues (9-speed shift-quality software updates, sliding-door and infotainment recalls), so the estimate is set slightly above the 2020 figure.
The 2019's 5-year window ran through the inflated 2021–2023 used market, which held residuals up. The Odyssey won KBB Best Resale Value awards in the minivan class in prior years.
Honda's new-vehicle limited warranty sits at the industry floor. That matches Toyota and FCA, and trails Kia's 5-year coverage on the Sedona.
The 5 yr / 60,000 mi powertrain coverage is the industry floor. Kia's 10 yr / 100,000 mi on the 2019 Sedona is the segment benchmark.
The 2019 Odyssey came with no complimentary scheduled maintenance; Honda Service Pass started with MY2023. Owners got roadside assistance for the 3/36 warranty term, while Toyota included ToyotaCare (2 yr / 25,000 mi) on the 2019 Sienna.
$38,755 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (56% retained, or about $21,703) leaves about $17,052 in depreciation. Add the projected $4,800 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $21,852 in total.
6Reliability & QualityMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.30C+
The 2019 is the second year of the fifth-generation Odyssey and still carries early-generation teething problems. J.D. Power rates its quality and reliability only 'Fair', below the 2020's 'Average', and Consumer Reports gives it 3/5. That puts it low in the mid band: ahead of the Pacifica and Voyager, well behind the Sienna.
Over this period Honda ranked among the top mainstream brands in Consumer Reports' brand reliability rankings and sat above the industry average in J.D. Power VDS. It trails Toyota and Lexus, which puts it at the top of the mid-pack band.
The NHTSA feed lists 20 campaigns covering MY2019, the heaviest record of any fifth-gen year so far. Several are safety-critical: power sliding-door latches that may let the door open while driving, sliding-door handle cables that can freeze, battery-terminal faults that can cut electrical power, a front seat-belt buckle defect, and the SRS software error that can deploy airbags unexpectedly. On top of those come repeated rear-camera water-intrusion and software campaigns. The volume and the recurring door and water-sealing pattern put it in the low band.
The 3.5L J35 V6 has a long high-mileage record. However, the volume LX/EX/EX-L trims use the ZF-sourced 9-speed automatic, which drew widespread complaints of rough or hesitant shifting and needed software reflashes; only Touring and Elite got the 10-speed. The proven engine is held back by a transmission with a mixed reputation.
This is the pre-refresh fifth-gen cabin, the same as 2020. It is practical and solidly assembled, with soft-touch upper surfaces on EX-L and above, but has hard plastics in lower zones. That is competitive for the class without leading it.
Assembly is generally solid. However, the sliding-door latch and handle-cable recalls and the repeated rear-camera water-intrusion campaigns point to sealing and hardware lapses in early fifth-gen production. J.D. Power's 'Fair' quality score agrees.
Honda has one of the densest US dealer networks, about 1,000 dealers, with generally strong service satisfaction.
The J35 V6 and platform components are shared with the Pilot, Passport and Ridgeline, so parts are plentiful and the aftermarket is deep. Typical repair costs sit below the minivan average.
7Technology & InfotainmentOne of the Odyssey's weakest categories.1.06D
The EX-L has the 8-inch Display Audio touchscreen, and no larger screen was offered. The LX makes do with a 5-inch non-touch screen.
The system responds quickly and has big virtual buttons and a volume knob, but its navigation menus are confusing. Early fifth-generation units drew owner complaints about freezes and Bluetooth glitches.
Wired CarPlay and Android Auto come from EX up. The LX has neither, and no trim offers wireless projection.
Native navigation with voice recognition is limited to the EX-L Navi/RES and up, so the plain EX-L relies on phone projection. The voice system itself is command-based and dated.
The 7-speaker base system includes a subwoofer, but the 550-watt premium system is Elite-only and unbranded.
From EX up there is a mostly digital 7-inch color Driver Information Interface, which reviewers called a first for the class. It is not a full configurable digital cluster.
There are no over-the-air vehicle updates; Display Audio updates are done by the dealer or over USB.
From EX up, the CabinControl app handles rear climate, audio and Social Playlist. Telematics remote functions through HondaLink are Touring/Elite-only and subscription-based.
The EX-L has 2.5-amp USB-A ports up front and two in the second row, plus 12V outlets in three locations. There is no USB-C, the 110V outlet needs the Navi/RES package, and wireless charging is Elite-only.
From EX up the van has Smart Entry with Walk-Away Auto Lock, push-button start and fob remote start, and the EX-L adds a power tailgate. The hands-free tailgate is Touring/Elite-only, and there is no phone-as-key.
A multi-angle rear camera with dynamic guidelines and BSI with Cross Traffic Monitor come from EX up. Parking sensors are Touring/Elite-only, and no surround-view camera was offered.
No head-up display on any trim.
8Use-Case FitMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.44C+
This is the segment benchmark for family logistics. Magic Slide seats let a parent reach the third row or keep car seats apart, and the LATCH hardware is easy to use. The LX lacks the sliding second row.
The van has a 5-star NHTSA rating and an IIHS Top Safety Pick, and the full Honda Sensing suite is standard from EX up. The base LX goes without it, and the award applies only with the optional equipment.
There is roomy seating in all three rows, 32.8 cu ft of luggage space behind the third row, tri-zone climate and sunshades. The rear entertainment system needs the EX-L Navi/RES package.
It is easy to drive, with a light, accurate feel and adaptive cruise with low-speed follow from EX up. The volume trims' 9-speed is less polished at low speed than the Touring/Elite 10-speed.
At 22 MPG combined on regular fuel, it costs about the class norm for a gas minivan but well above the hybrid Sienna.
At 203 inches long with a 39.6-ft turning circle, it is a big vehicle, though good outward visibility helps. Parking sensors are top-trim only, and there is no surround camera.
The EX-L tows 3,000 lbs (3,500 on Touring/Elite) and offers up to 155.8 cu ft of cargo space with the second row removed. That suits light work, not real towing.
The proven 3.5L V6 is a strength, but early fifth-generation vans had infotainment, power sliding door and 9-speed complaints. It is a family vehicle, not a fleet tool.
Removable second-row seats and cargo tie-downs help, but the 110V outlet needs the Navi/RES package and no work or upfit trim exists.
It is a comfortable and quiet highway cruiser with about 429 miles of range and adaptive cruise plus lane keeping from EX up.
The van is front-drive only with no AWD option, unlike the Sienna and Pacifica. Its utility is limited to gravel roads and a light trailer.
The deep well behind the third row, the one-motion fold-flat third row and removable second-row seats give exceptional gear capacity. The second row comes out rather than stowing in the floor.
9Driving ExperienceMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.49C+
Reviewers widely call the fifth-generation Odyssey the best-handling minivan, with composed body control for its size.
The steering is responsive and well weighted for a minivan, though still filtered.
Stops are respectable, but the pedal feels soft at first before firming up.
The 280-hp V6 is strong and smooth. The 9-speed automatic on volume trims is less refined than the Touring/Elite 10-speed, and the idle stop-start can be noticeable.
The V6 sounds refined under load. Active noise cancellation and active engine mounts keep vibration low.
Turning circle is typical for a full-size minivan.
The driver gets a commanding view, a tilt/telescoping wheel, and a 12-way power seat with memory on the EX-L. The push-button shift-by-wire controls take some getting used to.
It is the minivan reviewers single out for being enjoyable to drive, but it is still a family hauler.
10Value & Market PositionOne of the Odyssey's strongest categories.2.60C+
The $31,235 LX has the 280-hp V6, a 9-speed automatic and tri-zone climate. However, it lacks Honda Sensing, blind-spot monitoring, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto and power sliding doors, so most buyers have to step up to the EX. Honda Sensing didn't become standard on every trim until the MY2021 refresh.
The EX at about $35.2K adds Honda Sensing, power doors and Display Audio, which is fair content for the money. Add the strong V6, Magic Slide seats and low depreciation, and the Odyssey is good value next to an aging Sienna and Sedona, though the cheaper Grand Caravan undercut everyone on price.
Six well-spaced trims (LX, EX, EX-L, EX-L Navi/RES, Touring, Elite) span about $31K–$48K. Every van is FWD with the V6, though, while the Sienna offered AWD and the Pacifica offered a PHEV.
In 2019 the Odyssey outsold the Pacifica, Sienna and Sedona, trailing only the fleet-heavy Dodge Grand Caravan, in a shrinking segment. Honda's newsroom billed it as the best-selling minivan to retail buyers.
Honda has a strong reputation with family buyers for reliability, resale value and low-drama ownership, and the Odyssey name has decades of minivan credibility. It is not aspirational, but it is very well regarded by its intended shoppers.
The 2019 model year sold in a pre-pandemic buyer's market, so modest dealer discounts below MSRP and seasonal APR/lease specials were typical. Honda's incentives were smaller than the heavy cash on the Grand Caravan, Pacifica and Sedona.
2019 is only the second model year of the generation that launched for MY2018. The platform and tech were recent, and the MY2021 refresh was two years away.
The 2019 Odyssey collected a sweep of class awards, and reviewers consistently ranked it at or near the top of the minivan class for its driving dynamics, V6 and Magic Slide seating. The Pacifica was its main rival in comparisons.
