The verdict
A mixed-report minivan, strong on safety and held back by performance.
The refreshed 2025 Odyssey is still the most flexible, best-driving family hauler in the minivan class. It seats eight on every trim, its Magic Slide second row is the segment's best answer to car seats and third-row access, and its 280-hp V6 makes it feel quicker and more composed than its rivals. The trade-offs are real, though: it gets 22 MPG combined with no hybrid offered, it is front-wheel drive only, Honda's 3-year/36,000-mile warranty is the industry minimum, and the volume trims miss some key tech. Families who value space, driving feel and resale will love it; buyers who care about fuel bills or need AWD should look at the Sienna first.

Detailed scoring by subject
1Performance & PowertrainThe Odyssey's lowest-graded category.0.49F
2025 is the mid-cycle refresh year of the fifth generation (2018–), but the powertrain carried over unchanged: the 3.5L V6 is the only engine on every trim.
Peak torque of the sole naturally aspirated V6; it arrives high in the rev range, typical of Honda's V6.
Honda does not publish a 0–60 time. Instrumented tests of the unchanged V6/10-speed powertrain put it around 7 seconds, among the quicker minivans.
The V6 delivers smooth, linear power with no turbo lag and stays responsive under load. Variable Cylinder Management transitions can occasionally be felt, and it lacks the Sienna hybrid's electric smoothness at low speed.
Honda's in-house 10-speed automatic (standard on all trims since 2020) shifts smoothly and picks gears sensibly, with occasional hunting among the tall top gears at part-throttle cruise.
Rated at 3,500 lbs when properly equipped, which ties the Sienna and Carnival at the top of the minivan class. Trailer brakes and the dealer-accessory hitch package are required.
Front-wheel drive only on every 2025 trim; no AWD option exists. Sienna and Pacifica both offer AWD.
This is a pavement-only family minivan with low ground clearance, FWD only, and no skid plates, terrain modes or off-road trim.
There is one powertrain: a gas V6 with the 10-speed and FWD. No hybrid, PHEV or EV is offered, while rivals offer a hybrid (Sienna, Carnival) or a PHEV (Pacifica).
2Efficiency & RangeOne of the Odyssey's weakest categories.0.75F
Only one gas V6 configuration is offered, and with no hybrid assist it sits with the gas Pacifica at the low end of the minivan class.
Without hybrid regeneration, stop-and-go economy is weak, at roughly half the city figure of the hybrid Sienna.
Tall 10-speed gearing and cylinder deactivation give a highway figure that is competitive for a V6 minivan.
Calculated as Honda's published 19.5-gal tank × the EPA combined rating (EPA publishes no range figure for gas vehicles). That is adequate road-trip range but far short of the Sienna hybrid's.
This is the EPA's current annual fuel-cost estimate on regular gasoline. Low combined MPG puts it near the top of the minivan class for running cost.
It runs on regular 87-octane unleaded. Honda recommends premium only when towing, a minor caveat.
3SafetyThe Odyssey's best-graded category.3.12B
NHTSA rates the 2025 Odyssey 5 stars overall, with 5-star frontal and side results and a 4-star rollover rating.
IIHS lists a Top Safety Pick for the 2025 Odyssey, with Good small-overlap and updated side results, but it rates Poor in the updated moderate-overlap test because of rear-passenger head and neck injury risk. That Poor result in a key test holds the score below the award band.
Honda Sensing is standard on every 2025 Odyssey trim (the 2025 refresh carried it over). It includes CMBS AEB, ACC with Low-Speed Follow, LKAS, Road Departure Mitigation and Traffic Sign Recognition, and blind-spot information with cross-traffic monitor comes on every trim.
IIHS rates the Odyssey's pedestrian front-crash prevention only Acceptable. That is adequate, but the van trails rivals that earn Good in the updated day/night pedestrian evaluations.
Blind Spot Information with Rear Cross Traffic Monitor is standard on all trims. It is alert-only, with no active steering or braking intervention and no safe-exit alert.
Standard LKAS centers the van on well-marked highways, but reviewers describe it as a generation behind Honda's newer tuning, with some wander on faded lines.
Standard ACC with Low-Speed Follow handles stop-and-go traffic well, but the Odyssey has no combined highway-assist mode and no traffic-jam assist.
No hands-free driving system is offered on any 2025 Odyssey trim.
IIHS rates the 2025 Odyssey's headlights Acceptable rather than Good. The LED headlights and auto high beams are standard.
The tall greenhouse, low beltline and large windows give excellent sightlines. A multi-angle rear camera is standard, and the camera aids on upper trims compensate for the van's length.
IIHS rates the LATCH Good+ with extra LATCH positions on all trims. Wide sliding-door openings and Magic Slide second-row seats make multiple car-seat installs easy.
4Space & ComfortOne of the Odyssey's strongest categories.2.94B-
Every 2025 trim seats eight via the Multi-Function 2nd-row center seat.
Front headroom is modest for the segment; Honda publishes a single figure for all trims.
Front legroom is on the short side for a minivan, though seat travel suits most drivers.
Generous second-row headroom.
The second row is spacious, and the Magic Slide seats let you trade that room with the third row.
The third row is adult-usable, with 38.1 in of legroom and 38.3 in of headroom. Magic Slide walk-in access makes it easy to reach, and Sport-L and up add USB-C ports back there.
The third row folds into a deep well, giving class-competitive space behind the second row.
A large hold opens up with the second-row seats removed. The score uses the standard J1100 figure, not the max-with-floor-space number.
The removable Multi-Function center seat, the Magic Slide seats and the deep third-row well make the cabin flexible, and seatback pockets and 12V outlets are standard. The 115V outlet and the HDMI/streaming-device bin are reserved for Touring and Elite.
The front seats are supportive, and both get standard power adjustment with power lumbar. Reviewers rate it a strong long-trip vehicle, though the second-row seats are flatter than the Sienna and Carnival lounge-style chairs.
The ride is compliant and well controlled even on 19-inch wheels, among the best in the segment.
The cabin is quiet at highway speed, though some tire roar comes through on coarse pavement. It matches the Sienna rather than clearly beating it.
Tri-zone climate with rear controls, heated front seats, remote start and second-row sunshades are standard. Ventilated seats and a heated wheel are Elite-only, and heated rear seats are not offered.
5Cost of OwnershipOne of the Odyssey's weakest categories.1.55D
For the refreshed 2025 model year Honda dropped the EX trim, making the EX-L the entry point at $42,220 plus $1,450 destination.
Sales concentrate in the EX-L and Sport-L, the two lower trims. The Sport-L price is used as typically equipped, since it sits at the top of that volume band.
The mature 3.5L V6 and 10-speed are inexpensive to service. CarEdge rates the Odyssey $1,591 below the minivan average over 5 years. Edmunds' True Cost to Own adds repairs and runs higher, so a midpoint figure is used.
Honda badge equity keeps the Odyssey's resale above average for a gas minivan. It still trails the hybrid-only Sienna.
This is Honda's standard new-vehicle limited warranty, the industry floor. The Kia Carnival offers 5 years / 60,000 miles.
The powertrain cover is the industry-minimum 5 years / 60,000 miles, half of the Carnival's 10 years / 100,000 miles.
Honda includes no scheduled maintenance, unlike ToyotaCare (2 years / 25,000 miles) on the Sienna. Perks are limited to 24/7 roadside assistance for 3 years / 36,000 miles and a HondaLink connected-services trial.
$44,820 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (56% retained, or about $25,099) leaves about $19,721 in depreciation. Add the projected $4,500 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $24,221 in total.
6Reliability & QualityOne of the Odyssey's strongest categories.2.80B-
Sources disagree sharply for 2025: Consumer Reports rates the 2025 Odyssey below average and last of six 2025 minivans (suspension/steering and climate-system trouble spots), while J.D. Power owners give it an 80/100 Quality & Reliability score. Mixed signals land it in the low end of the average band, below Sienna and Carnival.
Honda consistently ranks among the top mainstream brands in Consumer Reports' brand reliability rankings (4th overall in recent years) and sits above average in J.D. Power VDS, trailing Toyota/Lexus.
The 2025 model year itself carries two recalls, one of them a safety-system defect (front passenger seat weight sensor that can crack and cause unintended airbag deployment); the fifth generation overall has a busy recall record including sliding doors, hood latch, fuel pump and the 2026 SRS-ECU campaign on 2018–2022 vans.
The 2025 Odyssey keeps the 3.5L J35 V6 and 10-speed automatic used since the 2020 model year; the J35 family has a long high-mileage reputation and the 10-speed shows no systemic failure pattern. CR's 2025 trouble spots are suspension/steering and climate, not the powertrain.
The 2025 mid-cycle refresh updated the cabin tech (larger touchscreen, digital gauge cluster) and trim, keeping soft-touch upper surfaces; reviewers call it well-finished and competitive with Sienna, though below Carnival's upscale trims and with harder plastics on lower trims.
Assembly at Honda's Lincoln, Alabama plant is generally tight, and J.D. Power owner quality scores are solid, but CR's below-average 2025 rating and owner complaints about climate controls and squeaks/rattles in the suspension pull it down.
Honda has one of the densest US dealer networks (roughly 1,000 dealers) and above-average J.D. Power customer service satisfaction for a mainstream brand.
Shared J35 V6 and platform components with Pilot, Passport and Ridgeline make parts plentiful and the aftermarket deep; typical repair costs are below the minivan average.
7Technology & InfotainmentMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.78C-
The 2025 refresh moved every trim to a 9-inch screen, which is still small next to rivals' 10–12 inch displays.
The refresh added a faster processor and kept physical shortcuts. Reviewers call it fine, though the platform's age still shows.
Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard on every 2025 trim, new with the refresh.
Native navigation with voice recognition is limited to Touring and Elite, so owners of the volume EX-L and Sport-L rely on phone projection.
The base 160 W, 7-speaker system is adequate. The unbranded 500 W, 11-speaker upgrade is Elite-only.
A 7-inch digital display is now standard but sits beside a physical analog speedometer, so the cluster is not full-digital.
Honda does not advertise vehicle-level over-the-air updates for the Odyssey, and no feature-adding OTA program is documented.
The HondaLink app is standard, but its remote and security services are trial-then-subscription and only on Touring and Elite. No digital key is offered.
The refresh added USB-C in every row, and a wireless charger is standard. A 115V outlet comes on Touring and Elite.
Smart entry with Walk Away Auto Lock, remote engine start, power sliding doors and a power tailgate are standard. The hands-free tailgate is Elite-only and there is no phone-as-key.
The volume EX-L and Sport-L get only the multi-angle rearview camera. Parking sensors are Touring/Elite-only, and no surround-view camera is offered.
No head-up display is offered on any 2025 Odyssey trim.
8Use-Case FitMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.52C+
This is the segment benchmark: power sliding doors, Magic Slide second-row seats that shift sideways for third-row access, and a removable center seat. The LATCH anchors are rated Good+.
NHTSA gives it five stars, IIHS names it a Top Safety Pick, and Honda Sensing plus a rear seat reminder are standard on every trim. Against that, it scored Poor for rear-passenger protection in IIHS's updated moderate-overlap test.
Tri-zone climate, second-row sunshades, USB-C in every row and 32.8 cu ft behind the third row make it an excellent road tripper. Rear entertainment and CabinWatch are Touring/Elite-only.
It is smooth and easy in traffic, with a responsive V6, a slick 10-speed and light steering. Its length is the main annoyance.
At 22 mpg combined from the V6, it costs far more per mile than the hybrid-only Sienna.
The van is 205.2 in long with a 39.6-ft turning circle. The volume EX-L lacks parking sensors, so tight spots rely on the rear camera.
It tows 3,500 lb with the accessory package and holds 140.7 cu ft with the second row removed, enough for light work. It is FWD only.
The V6/10-speed drivetrain is proven, but the leather, family-oriented interior is not built for hard use and the van has little fleet presence.
Work provisions are few: cargo bag hooks, 12V outlets, a 115V/150W outlet on upper trims and no upfit ecosystem.
It is a quiet, comfortable highway cruiser, with standard adaptive cruise and low-speed follow. The 19.5-gal tank at 28 mpg highway gives roughly 540 miles of range.
It is FWD only, while the Sienna and Pacifica offer AWD, and it has no terrain modes. The 3,500 lb tow rating and big cargo hold help with camping gear and toys.
The one-motion fold-into-floor third row and removable second-row seats give 86.6–140.7 cu ft, swallowing bulky gear easily.
9Driving ExperienceMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.58C+
It is widely regarded as the best-handling minivan, with composed body control and nimble responses for its size.
The dual-pinion electric steering is quick (2.97 turns lock to lock) and precise, but light and short on feedback.
The brakes give a firm, progressive pedal from 12.6-in front and 13.0-in rear discs, and reviewers praise their response. No instrumented 2025 stopping distance was found.
The 280-hp V6 and 10-speed are smooth and eager, more responsive than rivals. Cylinder-deactivation transitions and occasional gear hunting are minor blemishes.
The V6 sounds smooth and refined under load, better than the Sienna's buzzy four-cylinder hybrid.
Average turning diameter for a minivan.
The driver sits high with good outward visibility, a 12-way power seat with memory and a tilt/telescopic wheel. The push-button shifter takes some acclimation.
The strong V6 and tidy handling make it about as engaging as a minivan gets, but it remains a family appliance.
10Value & Market PositionMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.58C+
With the EX trim dropped for 2025, every Odyssey comes as at least an EX-L. Leather, a power moonroof, a new 9-inch touchscreen, wireless CarPlay/Android Auto, wireless charging, power sliding doors and tailgate, and Honda Sensing are all standard. Content is generous, but the ~$43.7K floor sits well above the Carnival LX and Pacifica/Voyager entry points.
The 280-hp V6, Magic Slide second row and refreshed tech give fair content for the money. The lack of a hybrid or AWD option (19/22/28 MPG against the Sienna's 36 MPG hybrid) weakens the value case against similarly priced rivals.
There are four trims in a narrow $43.7K–$52.6K band, with one powertrain and front-wheel drive only. Losing the EX narrowed the ladder further, while the Sienna offers AWD and the Pacifica offers AWD and a PHEV.
US sales rose 11% to 88,462 in 2025 in a segment that grew strongly. The Odyssey still finished third behind the Pacifica and Sienna, which grew much faster, and only just ahead of a surging Carnival.
Honda's reputation for reliability and resale value carries strong weight with family buyers, and the Odyssey name has decades of minivan credibility. Honda is a top-tier mainstream brand rather than an aspirational one.
As the 2026 model arrived, 2025 Odysseys carried meaningful support: subvented APR (as low as 1.99–2.49% on shorter terms), financing bonuses, and cash back on remaining stock. These are real buyer benefits without fire-sale pricing.
The fifth generation dates to MY2018, and the 2025 mid-cycle refresh (new fascias, a 9-inch screen, a digital cluster and a 12.8-inch rear entertainment screen) freshens it without changing the 2018 platform or adding a hybrid. Buyers are getting an eighth-year design.
The 2025 Odyssey earned a Car and Driver Editors' Choice and an IIHS Top Safety Pick, and reviewers praise its driving dynamics and flexible seating. Comparison tests now usually favor the Sienna or Carnival.
