The verdict
A struggling mid-size luxury sedan, strong on driving and held back by reliability.
The 2017 Model 3 was Tesla's first mainstream sedan, and it shows both the promise and the growing pains of a brand-new platform built in a hurry. Buyers got genuinely quick, smooth acceleration (5.1 s to 60 mph), a 310-mile EPA range, and a 15-inch touchscreen with over-the-air updates — but only in one configuration: Long Range, rear-wheel drive, for roughly $49,000 as nearly everyone actually ordered it. Early production quality was rough, Consumer Reports later rated reliability below average, and DC fast-charging on the period Supercharger network tops out at 120 kW with a ~40-minute 10-80% top-up. It's a car for someone sold on the tech and the driving feel who can live with a cramped back seat and an unproven ownership record.
Jump to scoresStrengths

What holds it back
- No AWD, no trim choice — one car, take it or leave it
- Rough, unproven build quality from Tesla's first-year ramp
- Slow DC fast charging by any current standard

Detailed scoring by subject
1Performance & PowertrainGrades below the middle of the scale.1.55D
Tesla did not publish an official SAE horsepower figure for the 2017 Model 3; independent dynamometer and powertrain analyses converge on this number for the launch Long Range RWD configuration.
As with horsepower, Tesla did not publish an official torque figure; this is the converged third-party estimate for the launch Long Range RWD motor.
Tesla's own quoted 0-60 figure for the Long Range RWD at launch; independent instrumented tests (e.g. Edmunds at 5.3 s) corroborate it within normal test variance.
Single permanent-magnet rear motor with instant, linear torque delivery and zero turbo lag or hybrid-transition harshness — reviewers at launch universally praised the immediacy of the drivetrain.
Single-speed direct-drive gearbox — no shifting, no hunting, no CVT drone; power delivery is seamless by construction.
The 2017 Model 3 was offered in exactly one configuration — Long Range, rear-wheel drive only. Tesla did not announce the Dual Motor AWD/Performance variant until the Model 3 reveal event in early 2018, with deliveries later that year, so no AWD option existed for the 2017 model year.
A single take-it-or-leave-it configuration in 2017: one battery (Long Range), one motor layout (RWD), all-electric only. No Standard Range (arrived 2019), no Dual Motor/Performance (arrived 2018), and no gas/hybrid variant ever existed for this nameplate.
2Efficiency & RangeMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.94C-
EPA combined MPGe rating for the sole 2017 configuration (Long Range RWD).
EPA city MPGe for the 2017 Long Range RWD.
EPA highway MPGe for the 2017 Long Range RWD.
EPA-certified range for the Long Range RWD battery, the only pack offered in 2017 (Standard Range didn't arrive until 2019). EPA's own dynamometer testing measured 334 mi, but Tesla elected to publish the more conservative 310-mi rating, which is the certified figure that ships on the window sticker.
As delivered and marketed in 2017, the Model 3 Long Range charged on Tesla's then-current V2 Supercharger network at a peak of 120 kW, which Tesla quoted as adding about 170 miles of range in 30 minutes. The 250 kW V3 Supercharger network and its higher rates did not exist until 2019 and should not be read back onto the 2017 model year's as-sold charging capability.
Tesla did not publish an explicit 10-80% minute figure for the 2017 Model 3; this is derived from period V2 Supercharger testing and Tesla's own '~170 mi in 30 min' quote, scaled to a 10-80% window at the 120 kW network cap of the time.
EPA's standard-assumptions annual energy cost estimate for the 2017 Long Range RWD at 15,000 mi/yr.
No gasoline requirement at all; home Level 2 charging is cheap and the Supercharger network (already available at 2017 launch, if less dense than today) covers long trips. Slightly short of a perfect score only because public DC charging cost more per mile than home charging even then.
3SafetyOne of the Model 3's strongest categories.2.48C+
NHTSA's first full NCAP test of the Model 3 was published for the 2018 model year (Sept 2018); the 2017 launch cars share the identical body structure, restraint system and battery-pack floor, so the same 5-star result applies to this generation's 2017 production.
IIHS's own 2017 Tesla Model 3 rating page shows Good across every crashworthiness test and Superior/Advanced front crash prevention, but the 2017-built headlights measured 15.2% glare and scored only Acceptable, which kept the car off the Top Safety Pick/TSP+ list until the headlight hardware was revised in mid-2018 production.
Every 2017 Model 3 shipped with the full Autopilot 2/2.5 camera-radar-ultrasonic hardware suite and standard automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, blind-spot warning and lane departure warning — but Traffic-Aware Cruise Control and Autosteer were bundled only into the $5,000 Enhanced Autopilot option, not standard, and the real driver-facing suite differs sharply between a base car and an EAP car.
IIHS's front crash prevention test (which covers 2017-21 production) rated the Model 3's standard AEB Superior for vehicle-to-vehicle avoidance and Advanced for pedestrian detection — both daytime tests, since IIHS did not add nighttime pedestrian AEB testing until years later.
Blind-spot and rear-sensor warnings were standard on every 2017 Model 3 using ultrasonic sensors (no dedicated blind-spot radar), but the alert is shown only on the center touchscreen rather than at the mirror or in the instrument cluster, and it is warning-only with no active intervention or trailer-aware coverage.
The base 2017 Model 3 only had lane-departure warning; true lane centering (Autosteer) required the $5,000 Enhanced Autopilot option, and the early AP2.5-based implementation on the newly-launched Model 3 was noted by contemporaneous reviewers as capable on the highway but prone to wander and occasional disengagement, less polished than the mature AP1 system it replaced.
Traffic-Aware Cruise Control (full-speed-range, stop-and-go capable) was available on 2017 Model 3 only through the $5,000 Enhanced Autopilot option; Navigate on Autopilot, the feature that adds automated lane changes and highway on/off-ramp handling, was announced for Model 3 but not released until 2018, so no integrated highway-assist behavior existed yet in 2017.
No hands-free driving mode existed on the 2017 Model 3 in any configuration — Autopilot and Enhanced Autopilot both required continuous hands-on-wheel torque, and Full Self-Driving was sold only as a future-capability reservation with no functioning hands-free feature at the time.
IIHS tested the 2017-build Model 3's single standard headlight unit (no trim variation) and rated it Acceptable, measuring 15.2% glare and inadequate illumination on the right side of the road on the straightaway test; the hardware revision that later earned a Good rating did not arrive until mid-2018 production.
Reviewers of the 2017 Model 3 consistently flagged a shallow rear window and thick rear roof pillars that compromise rear/three-quarter visibility, partially offset by a standard rearview camera; forward and side sightlines from the low, minimalist dash were generally praised.
The Model 3's rear seat has only two outboard LATCH positions, no top-tether anchors, and lower anchors recessed about 1.2 inches behind the seat fabric seam, requiring a tool or extender to engage reliably; installing a rear-facing seat also forces the front passenger seat far forward and upright.
4Space & ComfortOne of the Model 3's strongest categories.2.21C
The 2017 Model 3 Long Range launch car is a 5-seat sedan with no alternate seating configuration offered.
Standard fixed glass roof on all 2017 Long Range cars; front headroom sits near the top of the mid-size luxury sedan band.
Generous front legroom aided by the flat floor and absence of a transmission tunnel.
The fastback roofline cuts into rear headroom less than feared thanks to the glass panel roof, landing mid-band for the segment.
Rear legroom is noticeably tight for a mid-size sedan, a frequent early-owner complaint relative to gas-powered rivals.
Tesla's commonly cited figure for the pre-refresh Model 3 rear trunk is 15 cu ft; the frunk adds separate, smaller capacity not counted in the trunk figure.
The frunk is a genuine novelty, and the flat floor/open console shelf help, but the 2017 launch car predates the deep 'giga console' bin added in the 2021 refresh — console storage is comparatively sparse and basic at launch.
Front seats are supportive and well-regarded; the rear bench is flatter and offers less thigh support on longer trips.
Reviewers of the 2017-18 launch cars describe the ride as agreeable most of the time but busy and stiff over broken pavement, a notch below segment leaders.
The single-motor EV powertrain is inherently near-silent, but the 2017 car predates the acoustic-glass and extra sound-deadening upgrades added in later model years, so wind/road noise is more present than later Model 3s.
The 2017 Long Range launch car included standard heated front seats, but heated rear seats, a heated steering wheel, and ventilated seats were not yet offered — those arrived in later model years.
5Cost of OwnershipOne of the Model 3's weakest categories.1.24D
Tesla quoted $35,000 as the Model 3's entry price from the March 2016 reveal onward and every order configurator in 2017 still showed it, so it is the published base MSRP for the model year even though Tesla deliberately prioritized the pricier Long Range build first and did not actually produce a Standard-trim car until 2019. Scored on the advertised figure per the item's instructions, but the gap between advertised and buildable is real and is called out so it isn't mistaken for a price any 2017 buyer could actually pay.
Long Range RWD at $44,000 was the only trim Tesla actually built and delivered in 2017, and the Premium Upgrades Package (open-pore wood trim, 12-way power/heated seats, premium audio, tinted glass roof) was so close to universally ordered on early production that $49,000 is the real transaction price for the representative 2017 car, not the bare $44,000 sticker. That lands at the expensive end of the sedan band for what was, on paper, a compact/mid-size sedan.
As a single-speed EV with regenerative braking, the Model 3 has essentially nothing analogous to a gas sedan's service schedule — Tesla's own maintenance recommendations for this generation amounted to tire rotation, cabin air filter replacement, and occasional brake fluid checks. This is well below even the low end of the sedan band and is a genuine, well-documented EV advantage rather than an estimate built on segment norms.
iSeeCars' Model 3 resale studies put 5-year retention in the mid-40s percent, the best of any Tesla nameplate but still middling for the sedan band. The specific 2017-2019 cohort likely did meaningfully better than this average through its own first five years (2017-2022) — early Model 3s were supply-constrained and in some cases traded near or above original MSRP during the 2021-2022 shortage — before Tesla's subsequent new-car price cuts dragged all used Model 3 values down regardless of vintage. No study isolates the 2017-specific cohort, so this is a reasonable but uncertain estimate.
Unchanged across Model 3's history and mid-band for the segment — ahead of the 3-year/36,000-mile domestic/German norm, short of Hyundai/Kia's longer terms.
Eight years is the EV-standard term, and the Long Range trim that every 2017 buyer actually received carries the longer 120,000-mile cap (versus 100,000 for the Standard trim that didn't yet exist), plus an explicit 70% capacity floor — a genuinely reassuring, contractual backstop against battery degradation.
Tesla included no scheduled complimentary maintenance plan on the 2017 Model 3, and free unlimited Supercharging — a perk Tesla had used on the Model S/X — was offered only to the small handful of July 2017 handover-event cars before being discontinued within about a month, so the overwhelming majority of 2017 deliveries (which landed in Q4) got none of it. Roadside assistance was limited to warranty-related breakdowns rather than general coverage (flats, lockouts, tows for any reason), which is thinner than many legacy brands' complimentary roadside programs of the era.
$49,000 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (45% retained, or about $22,050) leaves about $26,950 in depreciation. Add the projected $1,200 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $28,150 in total.
6Reliability & QualityThe Model 3's lowest-graded category.1.13D
The Model 3 launched in July 2017 as an all-new nameplate with zero ownership track record; Consumer Reports could not yet rate it at the time of the 2017 model year and, once data accumulated through 2018, rated it below average and briefly pulled its recommendation over a braking/reliability complaint before partially restoring it after an OTA fix.
Tesla's multi-year CR brand dependability standing has been volatile and frequently bottom-third rather than consistently mid-pack or better — the brand briefly cracked the top 10 in one survey but fell to 27th of 29 brands in Consumer Reports' October 2018 rankings, the period immediately following the 2017 Model 3 launch.
The first-generation Model 3 (2017 onward) has accumulated a double-digit recall count over its life — rearview camera delay (356k+ vehicles), seat belt warning non-compliance, power-window auto-reversal, and headlight brightness among them — but the pattern is dominated by software/compliance fixes rather than powertrain or fire-risk defects, and most were remedied over-the-air.
The Long Range single-motor EV powertrain in the 2017 car was unproven at launch, but the track record that has since accumulated on these early drive units and battery packs is strong: high-mileage examples have posted 150,000-200,000+ miles on the original battery and motor with only ~10% range degradation, well inside Tesla's 8-year/120,000-mile battery-and-drivetrain warranty for the car.
Reviewers praised the minimalist cabin design and single center touchscreen as distinctive for the price, but also flagged hard plastics and sparse switchgear/trim in a car priced close to $50,000 as delivered in 2017 (Long Range with Premium Upgrades Package), putting it roughly at parity with — not ahead of — same-segment rivals rather than class-leading.
2017 was the hand-built ramp-up period (roughly 1,764 units built that calendar year) before Fremont's 'production hell' scaling, and the earliest cars are widely documented as Tesla's worst for assembly quality: inconsistent, oversized panel gaps, headlights sitting proud or sunken relative to the fascia, and misaligned chrome trim pieces, prompting one industrial engineer to call it the worst new-car build quality seen in a decade.
Tesla's direct-owned service network in 2017 was thin relative to the fast-growing Model 3 fleet and reliant on third-party body shops for collision work; owners and repairers reported significant scheduling and cycle-time delays even as Tesla pushed shops toward tight 9-day 'keys to keys' targets, and complaint volume to consumer bodies was already climbing.
Tesla keeps its parts supply tightly controlled with no traditional dealer/independent-parts ecosystem and little aftermarket support in 2017; body panels and collision parts price well above mainstream-sedan equivalents and often faced multi-week wait times, with out-of-warranty major repairs (suspension, HVAC, battery work) running well above segment norms.
7Technology & InfotainmentMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.87C-
The 15-inch center touchscreen is the vehicle's sole display and handles essentially every function.
The launch UI was widely praised as fast, clean, and visually modern compared to rivals of the era, though some basic functions (mirror adjust, glovebox) are buried in touchscreen menus with no physical backup.
Tesla has never offered Apple CarPlay or Android Auto on any model, by design, in favor of its own native stack.
Native navigation (Google Maps-based) with live traffic was functional at launch; voice commands in 2017 were limited to a narrow set of phrases rather than natural-language requests.
The Long Range launch car included a premium audio system as part of its standard spec, well regarded for clarity though not class-leading.
The 2017 Model 3 has no gauge cluster of any kind behind the wheel — speed and all driving information live solely on the top-left of the center touchscreen, requiring the driver to look away from the road.
Tesla pioneered whole-vehicle over-the-air updates well before the Model 3 launched, and the Model 3 inherited the same capability — regular updates added and changed vehicle behavior, not just infotainment.
The Tesla app provided remote climate control, lock/unlock, vehicle locate, and charge management, and the Model 3 introduced phone-as-key Bluetooth unlocking (alongside RFID key cards) in place of a traditional fob.
Only two USB-A ports in the front console were available at launch, with no rear-seat USB and no built-in wireless charging pad (added later as an optional accessory).
Model 3 launched with phone-as-key Bluetooth entry plus RFID key cards as backup — a genuinely keyless design rather than a traditional proximity fob.
A rear backup camera and front/rear ultrasonic parking sensors were standard, but there was no surround/360-degree camera view at launch — that capability came later via software.
No head-up display has ever been offered on the Model 3, at any trim.
8Use-Case FitOne of the Model 3's weakest categories.1.41D
LATCH anchors are present in the outboard rear seats and a low sedan ride height eases car-seat installation, but rear legroom (35.2 in) is tight once a rear-facing seat is installed, and there is no rear climate vent on the 2017 launch car.
Forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking were standard regardless of Autopilot purchase, but at launch the 2017 Model 3 had not yet been formally crash-tested by NHTSA (its 5-star rating was announced in September 2018), and useful driver-assist features like adaptive cruise and lane centering required a separate $5,000 Enhanced Autopilot purchase.
Decent combined trunk-plus-frunk cargo and access to Tesla's Supercharger network aid long trips, but tight rear legroom/headroom and no rear climate vents at launch limit all-row comfort versus family-oriented rivals.
One-pedal regenerative driving, instant smooth torque, and quiet operation make stop-and-go traffic notably relaxed compared to a combustion sedan.
Electric per-mile running costs are far below a comparable gas sedan, and the 2017 Long Range car still qualified for the full $7,500 federal EV tax credit.
Mid-size sedan footprint and a standard backup camera help, but the roughly 38.7 ft turning circle is wide for the segment and there is no surround-view camera to assist in tight spaces.
A low-slung RWD sedan with no advertised tow rating and a shallow trunk — not a work-capable configuration.
As a brand-new 2017 launch vehicle built during Tesla's well-documented 'production hell' ramp-up, with widely reported early build-quality issues (panel gaps, paint defects) and no fleet track record yet, durability under hard work use was entirely unproven.
No onboard 120V/240V power outlets, no tie-downs, and no upfit ecosystem — a passenger sedan with essentially no jobsite-oriented features.
310 miles of EPA range at launch (Long Range pack) plus access to Tesla's Supercharger network made long trips genuinely practical for 2017, offsetting a firmer ride and unproven Autopilot software.
RWD-only in 2017 (dual-motor/AWD did not arrive until 2019), low sedan ground clearance, and no off-pavement provisions make this a pavement-only car.
Split-folding rear seats and the combined trunk-plus-frunk give some flexibility for bulky items, but there were no standard roof rails/rack mounting points on the 2017 car, limiting larger gear-hauling.
9Driving ExperienceThe Model 3's best-graded category.2.77B-
A near-50/50 weight distribution from the low-mounted battery pack gives flat, composed cornering that reviewers rated as class-leading among EVs and competitive with sport sedans.
Steering is nicely weighted and quick off-center with effort building naturally through a corner, though some reviewers found the lightest setting somewhat synthetic.
Stopping distances were competitive, but regenerative-braking blend and pedal feel in the 2017-18 launch cars were less refined than in later software-updated model years.
Single-speed direct drive delivers instant, impeccably smooth torque with no gear changes or shift shock of any kind.
The single rear motor is near-silent under normal driving; some early-build cars exhibited minor motor 'coil whine' at certain speeds, a known early-production trait.
A relatively wide turning circle for a mid-size sedan, sitting near the poor end of the segment band.
Seat and wheel adjustment range and visibility are good, but routing basic functions (mirrors, glovebox, climate vents) exclusively through the touchscreen, combined with no instrument cluster, was a widely noted ergonomic compromise at launch.
Quick, instant-torque acceleration and genuinely engaging handling make the Long Range RWD enjoyable, even if it is less thrilling than the later dual-motor Performance variants.
10Value & Market PositionMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.96C-
Hardware for Autopilot (forward camera array, radar, ultrasonics) and an industry-leading 15-inch center touchscreen with OTA updates came standard at every price point, which was genuinely generous for 2017. But the base configuration was otherwise stripped: cloth-adjacent seating only, no heated seats, no premium audio, no glass roof tinting upgrades, and only one free paint color (black) — all of that lived behind the $5,000 Premium Upgrades Package that nearly every buyer ended up ordering, so the advertised base car undersold what most owners actually paid for.
At ~$49,000 as typically ordered, the 2017 Model 3 undercut the Model S by roughly $30,000 while carrying over Autopilot hardware, OTA software updates, a 310-mile EPA range, and sub-6-second 0-60 acceleration that rivaled sedans costing far more. For buyers who wanted Tesla's technology and EV performance, nothing else on sale came close to the price; for buyers comparing strictly against gas-sedan content-per-dollar, the base car's thin standard equipment and $49k transaction price were a harder sell.
2017 offered exactly one buildable configuration — Long Range RWD — with no Standard Range, no all-wheel-drive, and no Performance variant; those arrived in 2018-2019. The only choices were paint, wheels, interior package, and Autopilot software tier. This is about as narrow as a modern trim lineup gets.
Raw 2017 US deliveries were tiny — roughly 1,770 units across Q3-Q4 — which on volume alone would read as a slow seller. But that reflected a severe, self-inflicted production bottleneck, not weak demand: Tesla was sitting on 400,000+ paid reservations and adding ~1,800 net reservations a day after the July handover event. Scoring this as a straightforward slow seller would misrepresent what was happening, so it sits at the low end of the steady mid-pack band rather than the bottom.
Tesla's brand halo was at a historic high around the Model 3 launch — a car with a 400,000-plus paid waitlist before a single customer unit existed, intense media coverage of the July 2017 handover event, and a cult following around Elon Musk and the broader EV mission. Few, if any, mainstream-priced sedans of 2017 carried comparable aspirational pull.
There were no deals of any kind on a 2017 Model 3. Tesla sold direct with no dealer negotiation, demand vastly outstripped the trickle of production, and the car wasn't discounted, financed specially, or incentivized in any way — buyers were simply grateful to reach the front of a year-plus queue.
2017 is the launch year of an all-new, from-scratch Tesla platform (the generation the registry carries as running 2017-2023) — as fresh as a model year can be, with a clean-sheet interior, structure and infotainment architecture no rival sedan shared.
Early reviews were strongly favorable on the fundamentals — Motor Trend called it "the most important vehicle of the century" and likened its handling to a Porsche Cayman's — but reception was based on limited early-production impressions rather than full comparison tests, and 2017 predates the major awards (Motor Trend's Car of the Year, 10Best mentions) that the nameplate collected starting with the 2018-2019 model years once Standard/AWD variants and higher volumes existed. Some press and owner accounts also flagged panel-gap and build-quality inconsistencies typical of Tesla's early manufacturing ramp.
