The verdict

A mixed-report mid-size luxury sedan, strong on safety and held back by reliability.

The 2019 Model 3 Standard Range Plus undercut the luxury-sedan establishment on running cost and acceleration — $550 a year to fuel, a 5.3-second 0-60, and a perfect 5-star NHTSA rating — while asking buyers to live with the shortest range in its own lineup (240 miles EPA), no CarPlay or gauge cluster, and a build-quality and service reputation that were genuinely shaky in 2019. It's the right call for tech-forward commuters who charge at home and rarely road-trip; it's a harder sell for families needing rear-seat room or anyone who wants a worry-free ownership experience.

Detailed scoring by subject

1Performance & PowertrainMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.07C
Horsepower
283 hp (Standard Range Plus RWD, volume trim from April 2019); ~346 hp Long Range AWD; ~450 hp Performance
39/100
#6 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Scored on the rear-drive Standard Range Plus, which became the volume/entry trim when it launched in April 2019 and replaced the earlier Standard Range and Mid Range RWD cars. Motor output on this single-motor configuration is unchanged from later model years.

Torque
307 lb-ft (Standard Range Plus); ~330 lb-ft Long Range AWD combined; ~450 lb-ft Performance combined
57/100
#3 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Peak torque from the single rear motor of the Standard Range Plus, delivered instantly from zero rpm as with any EV.

0–60 mph time
5.3 s (Standard Range Plus); ~4.1 s Long Range AWD (after a March 2019 OTA acceleration update), ~3.2 s Performance (after the same update, down from 3.5 s)
65/100
#3 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Tesla's own quoted 0–60 mph time for the Standard Range Plus is competitive for a mid-size sedan at this price point, and the 2019 lineup topped out with a genuinely quick Performance trim that became quicker still via a mid-year over-the-air update.

Powertrain refinement82
#1 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Instant, silent, linear single-motor thrust with no lag and no gear steps — a class apart from gas and hybrid mid-size sedans of the same model year. Held a bit below the top of the band because the pre-refresh 2019 car (single-pane glass, no heat pump, no added sound deadening — those arrive with the late-2020 refresh) lets in more motor whine and road noise than later model years, and the fixed, fairly aggressive regenerative braking takes some acclimation.

Transmission behavior86
#2 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

A single-speed reduction gear per motor means there is nothing to hunt for or shift through — delivery is seamless from a stop to top speed on every 2019 trim. Just short of a perfect score because the one-pedal regen calibration is fixed rather than driver-adjustable.

AWD/4WD availability60
#7 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

AWD was limited to the dual-motor Long Range and Performance trims throughout 2019; the volume trim — Standard Range Plus, the car most 2019 buyers actually drove off the lot — was rear-wheel drive only with no AWD option at that price point. A simple front/rear torque split with no low range or terrain modes, as expected on a pavement sedan.

Powertrain lineup breadth50
#7 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Battery-electric only, with no gas, hybrid or PHEV alternative on this nameplate. Within EV, 2019 was an unusually fluid model year — Standard Range, Mid Range, Long Range RWD, Long Range AWD and Performance all appeared on the price list at one point or another before the lineup settled into the three-trim Standard Range Plus / Long Range AWD / Performance structure that carried into 2020 and 2021.

2Efficiency & RangeMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.56C+
Combined fuel economy
133 MPGe combined (Standard Range Plus RWD, as EPA-certified for MY2019)
100/100
#1 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

133 MPGe is strong for a 2019 EV sedan, though it sits a bit below the figure the same hardware would post once Tesla's later efficiency software updates and the 2020-model-year retest pushed the combined rating higher — this is the as-certified MY2019 number, not a later recertification.

City fuel economy
140 MPGe city (Standard Range Plus RWD)
100/100
#1 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

City is the Model 3's strongest mode, as with any EV — aggressive regenerative braking recovers most stop-and-go energy and there is no idle consumption.

Highway fuel economy
124 MPGe highway (Standard Range Plus RWD)
100/100
#1 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Highway efficiency is solid for an EV sedan of this era, though lower than city as expected since regenerative braking contributes less at steady highway speed.

Driving range
240 mi EPA (Standard Range Plus RWD, as EPA-certified for MY2019); ~310 mi Long Range AWD and Performance
0/100
#10 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

240 miles is the shortest range in the 2019 lineup by a wide margin — the Long Range and Performance trims reach roughly 310 miles — and it sits at the low end of the EV sedan range band for this era. A later Tesla efficiency update raised the Standard Range Plus's rating to 250 miles, but that change is documented against the 2020 model year, not this MY2019 certification.

DC fast-charge peak rate
170 kW peak DC (Standard Range Plus, after a November 2019 software update); 250 kW on Long Range/Performance
40/100
too few sedans scored for 2019 to rankCompare all →

The Standard Range Plus launched in April 2019 capped around 100–120 kW, then Tesla raised the ceiling to 170 kW fleet-wide via the 2019.36.1 software update in November 2019 — a hardware-unlocked rate rather than a new part, so it is reported here as the figure that applied to these cars for the back half of the model year and ever after. Still well below the 250 kW ceiling of the Long Range and Performance siblings.

10–80% fast-charge time
~25 min 10–80% on a Supercharger (170 kW peak)
71/100
too few sedans scored for 2019 to rankCompare all →

Roughly 25 minutes for 10–80% is competitive for a 2019 EV, since the smaller usable pack offsets the lower peak kW versus the Long Range/Performance trims. Tesla does not publish a 10–80% figure directly, so this is a corroborated third-party measurement rather than a manufacturer spec.

Estimated annual fuel cost
$550/yr EPA (15,000 mi at national-average electricity)
100/100
#1 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

$550 a year is among the cheapest running costs of any 2019 vehicle in this dataset, and cheaper still on off-peak home or solar charging.

Fuel requirements88
#2 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

No fuel grade to worry about, and the Model 3 plugs directly into Tesla's proprietary Supercharger network — already the densest DC fast-charging network in the US in 2019 — with Level 2 home charging covering daily use cheaply. Held a few points short of the ceiling because the Standard Range Plus's 240-mile range and (for most of 2019) sub-170 kW charge cap make road-trip charging stops more frequent than on the Long Range trim.

3SafetyThe Model 3's best-graded category.3.43B+
NHTSA overall rating
5 stars overall (5/5 frontal, 5/5 side, 5/5 rollover)
100/100
#1 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

NHTSA awarded the Model 3 a perfect 5-star rating overall and in every sub-category; the rating applies to the body structure introduced at launch and carries through the 2019 model year with no structural changes.

IIHS awards & crashworthiness95
#1 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

IIHS rated every crashworthiness test Good (small overlap front driver and passenger side, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength, head restraints) and named the 2019 Model 3 a Top Safety Pick+, its highest award.

Standard ADAS suite breadth82
#4 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking and lane departure avoidance were standard on every 2019 Model 3 from the start of the model year; traffic-aware cruise control and Autosteer (basic Autopilot) became standard across the whole lineup in April 2019, so most of the model year's production carried the full suite standard rather than paywalled, with only Enhanced Autopilot (auto lane change, self-parking) remaining a $5,000 option.

Automatic emergency braking performance85
#1 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

IIHS rated the standard AEB system Superior for vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention and Advanced for daytime pedestrian detection (avoided collisions at 12 and 25 mph, cut 37 mph impact speed by 34 mph); IIHS did not yet run a nighttime pedestrian test on this generation.

Blind-spot & cross-traffic coverage60
#7 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Blind spot detection (camera-based side warning) was standard on every trim, but the 2019 Model 3 had no true rear cross-traffic alert or active blind-spot steering intervention — coverage is alert-only.

Lane keeping & centering70
#3 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Autosteer's lane centering on the Model 3 was generally smooth on well-marked highways but could offset from lane center near guardrails or faded markings, and Consumer Reports (May 2019) found the related Navigate on Autopilot auto-lane-change feature 'far less competent' than a human driver, flagging real intervention needs.

Adaptive cruise & highway assist80
#2 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Traffic-Aware Cruise Control handled full-speed-range stop-and-go smoothly and integrated well with Autosteer for highway assist, widely regarded as class-leading at the time despite occasional phantom-braking complaints.

Hands-free driving availability15
#2 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The 2019 Model 3 required hands on the wheel at all times under Autopilot, with nag/torque-sensing escalation; no hands-free highway mode existed (Smart Summon, introduced late 2019, is a low-speed parking-lot feature, not highway hands-free driving).

Headlight performance90
#1 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

IIHS rated the Model 3's standard (not optional) LED headlights Good with high-beam assist available, a rating that applied across the trim range rather than being locked to an upper trim.

Outward visibility58
#10 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The fastback roofline and thick rear quarters create a notable blind spot over the driver's shoulder that owners report persists even with mirrors properly adjusted; the standard backup camera helps rear maneuvering but doesn't fully compensate for the sedan's rear-quarter sightlines.

Child-seat (LATCH) usability62
#8 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

IIHS rated LATCH ease of use Acceptable for the 2019 Model 3; Cars.com's installation test found the lower anchors recessed into stiff upholstery, requiring some extra effort with hook-style infant-seat connectors though straightforward with thicker convertible-seat connectors.

4Space & ComfortMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.46C+
Seating capacity
5 seats (Standard Range Plus RWD, single bench rear row)
100/100
#1 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The Model 3 is a conventional 5-seat sedan across every 2019 trim, with no 4- or 7-seat configuration offered.

Front headroom
40.3 in front headroom (standard glass roof, no sunroof option)
100/100
#1 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The glass roof panel that is standard on every 2019 Model 3 removes the usual sunroof header structure, giving front headroom that sits at the top of the sedan class.

Front legroom
42.7 in front legroom
68/100
#2 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Front legroom is mid-pack for a mid-size sedan — adequate for tall drivers but not class-leading.

Rear headroom
37.7 in rear headroom
68/100
#6 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The fastback roofline trims rear headroom versus the front, but the standard glass roof partly offsets it, leaving a mid-pack figure for the segment.

Rear legroom
35.2 in rear legroom
32/100
#7 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

At 35.2 in, rear legroom is on the tight side for the mid-size luxury sedan segment — adults fit but knee clearance behind a tall front occupant is limited, a frequent reviewer complaint.

Cargo/trunk volume
15.0 cu ft combined (12.3 cu ft rear trunk + 2.7 cu ft front trunk/"frunk")
50/100
#6 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Tesla's published combined cargo figure splits a conventional rear trunk with a second front-trunk compartment under the hood — unusual for the segment but the total is mid-pack for a mid-size sedan once both volumes are added.

In-cabin storage & clever solutions70
#2 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The front trunk is a genuine segment novelty and the open center console/tunnel bin is large, but the glovebox-less dash (accessed only via the touchscreen) and a shallow door-pocket design drew mixed reviewer reaction in 2019.

Seat comfort66
#9 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The Standard Range Plus's synthetic-leather seats are supportive but flatter and firmer than rivals' at this price point; reviewers generally called them comfortable for commutes but not standout on long drives.

Ride quality60
#10 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The standard suspension tune is sporty and well controlled but transmits more road texture than a typical luxury sedan, especially on the optional 19-inch wheels; reviewers called it firm rather than plush.

Cabin quietness70
#8 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

With no engine noise, the cabin is quiet at a stop and in town, but 2019 reviewers noted more wind and road noise at highway speed than the acoustic-glass-equipped Long Range trim's reputation implies for the base Standard Range Plus's thinner glass.

Climate & comfort features62
#8 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Heated front seats were standard and heated rear outboard seats were enabled via a 2019 software update, plus app-based remote climate preconditioning, but a heated steering wheel was not yet offered and rear seats had no dedicated climate vents.

5Cost of OwnershipOne of the Model 3's weakest categories.1.73C-
Base MSRP
$39,990 (Standard Range Plus; a bare Standard Range RWD briefly listed at $35,000 Feb–Apr 2019 before Tesla discontinued it)
45/100
#2 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Tesla simplified the 2019 lineup mid-year, dropping the $35,000 Standard Range in April 2019 and making Standard Range Plus the entry trim for most of the model year.

Volume-Trim Price
$39,990 (Standard Range Plus RWD, the highest-volume configuration for most of 2019)
53/100
#1 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Standard Range Plus was both the entry trim and the best-selling configuration once Tesla simplified the lineup to three trims (SR+, Long Range, Performance) in 2019.

5-Year Maintenance & Repair Cost
~$2,300 over 5 years (no oil changes/spark plugs; brake pads, cabin filter, tire rotations, occasional 12V battery)
100/100
#1 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

EVs avoid the bulk of ICE-sedan maintenance line items; estimates vary by source but consistently land well below the gas-sedan segment norm.

5-Year Resale Value Retention
~43% of MSRP retained after 5 years (volatile — Tesla's 2023 price cuts hit used values across all model years)
27/100
#7 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Model 3 resale has been unusually volatile for the segment: strong early demand gave way to steep used-market declines once Tesla repeatedly cut new-car MSRPs starting in 2023, which depresses retention for a 2019 car assessed from today's vantage point.

Basic warranty
4 yr / 50,000 mi bumper-to-bumper
50/100
#2 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Standard Tesla basic warranty for the 2019 Model 3, matching the manufacturer's published limited warranty.

Powertrain warranty
8 yr / 100,000 mi battery & drive unit (Standard Range Plus RWD); Long Range/Performance get 8 yr / 120,000 mi
60/100
#2 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Volume trim (SR+ RWD) carries the 100,000-mile cap; higher trims get a longer mileage allowance under the same 8-year term.

Complimentary maintenance & perks35
#9 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Tesla included no complimentary scheduled maintenance plan with the 2019 Model 3, and roadside assistance only covers warrantable breakdowns through the 4-year/50,000-mile basic warranty window — thinner than brands offering multi-year prepaid service or unconditional roadside coverage. Over-the-air software updates are a real, ongoing benefit but are a product feature rather than an ownership-cost perk.

Effective 5-Year Ownership Cost
$25,094 (≈$22,794 depreciation + $2,300 maintenance)
60/100
#3 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

$39,990 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (43% retained, or about $17,196) leaves about $22,794 in depreciation. Add the projected $2,300 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $25,094 in total.

6Reliability & QualityThe Model 3's lowest-graded category.0.74F
Predicted reliability35
#9 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Consumer Reports' 2019 member survey data showed the Model 3 dropping from average to below-average predicted reliability, and CR pulled its recommendation for the car as a direct result — the clearest below-average signal available for this model year.

Brand reliability track record28
#10 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Tesla's first appearances in J.D. Power's brand-wide studies (2020 IQS, 2020/2021 VDS covering vehicles from this era) placed it at or near the bottom of the entire industry, consistent with CR's below-average member-survey findings for the same period — a bottom-third brand standing, not mid-pack.

Recall & TSB history28
#10 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

NHTSA records roughly two dozen recall campaigns against 2018-2019 Model 3 production, including safety-critical mechanical issues (front suspension lateral link separation, front seat belts not securely attached to the B-pillar, loose brake caliper bolts) rather than minor administrative fixes — a pattern of repeated, sometimes serious safety recalls, not a clean record.

Powertrain durability reputation80
#2 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The Model 3's single/dual permanent-magnet motor and battery pack draw on a drivetrain architecture Tesla had already run in the Model S since 2012 with few major mechanical failures reported by 2019; nearly all of the era's well-documented quality complaints are body, trim, paint and panel-fit issues rather than motor or battery failures, so the powertrain itself carries a strong early reputation even while surrounding build quality lagged.

Interior material quality58
#10 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Reviewers were split on the minimalist cabin: synthetic leather seating and a mix of soft-touch surfaces in primary touch zones read as modern and clean, but reviewers and owners consistently flagged hard plastics and an austere feel below what rivals at this price offer, landing it in the competitive-with-expected-hard-plastics band rather than class-leading.

Fit & finish40
#10 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Panel-gap inconsistency and paint defects were the single most common owner complaints through 2019, and J.D. Power's 2020 Initial Quality Study — covering vehicles built in this era — specifically cited poorly fitting body panels and paint imperfections as Tesla's leading quality issues; some individual 2019 cars were praised by inspectors for tight, even gaps, but this was not yet the consistent build-wide standard.

Dealer & service network30
#10 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

2019 was the peak of Tesla's service-capacity crisis: a quarter of owners waited 10+ days for an appointment in Q3 2019 and satisfaction with the initial service visit hit a new low, reflecting a network that had not scaled with Model 3 volume — a sparse, strained network rather than adequate coverage.

Parts availability & repair cost32
#10 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Tesla tightly controlled its own parts supply and body-shop network rather than allowing open aftermarket access, and 2018-2019 owners reported both elevated repair costs (specialized body parts, ADAS recalibration, higher labor rates) and significant delays sourcing parts — closer to the expensive/slow end than normal pricing and availability.

7Technology & InfotainmentMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.97C-
Touchscreen size
15.0 in center touchscreen (standard and only screen on all trims)
94/100
#1 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Every 2019 Model 3 carries the same 15-inch horizontal center touchscreen, the largest in the mid-size sedan segment at the time and the vehicle's sole display — there is no separate gauge screen.

Infotainment UX & responsiveness86
#1 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The Model 3's Linux-based interface was widely rated the fastest, most responsive infotainment system of 2019 — snappy menu navigation, built-in streaming/games, and over-the-air improvements throughout the year — though it concentrates nearly every control (including mirrors and glovebox) in the touchscreen, a usability tradeoff reviewers flagged.

Wireless CarPlay / Android Auto8
#10 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Tesla does not support Apple CarPlay or Android Auto on the Model 3 in any model year, by design — the vehicle relies entirely on its own built-in navigation, media and app ecosystem instead of phone projection.

Voice control & native navigation52
#8 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

2019 Model 3 voice commands were limited to basic functions (navigation destination, climate, phone) without Tesla's later natural-language assistant, and the native nav — while functional and tied to live traffic — lacked the polish of Google/Waze-based systems some rivals offered via phone projection.

Audio system quality56
#10 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The Standard Range Plus volume trim carries Tesla's base 7-speaker 'Immersive Sound' system, adequate for the price but a clear step below the 14-speaker Premium Audio reserved for Long Range/Performance in 2019 — reviewers called the base system fine, not a highlight.

Digital instrument cluster15
#10 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The 2019 Model 3 has no gauge cluster behind the steering wheel at all — speed and basic status are shown on a strip of the shared center touchscreen, a design choice some reviewers liked for minimalism but which several others flagged as awkward, requiring a sideways glance for speed.

OTA update capability96
#1 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Tesla shipped frequent whole-vehicle over-the-air updates throughout 2019 that added real features — Smart Summon, raised Supercharging rates, heated rear seats, and UI changes — the broadest OTA scope of any 2019 vehicle, not just maps or infotainment patches.

Companion app & remote functions90
#1 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The Tesla app offered remote lock/unlock, climate preconditioning, vehicle locate, charging control and (by late 2019) Smart Summon — free of subscription in 2019 and widely regarded as the most capable companion app in the industry at the time.

Charging ports & device power45
#9 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Pre-refresh 2019 Model 3s had just two USB-A ports in the front center console and none dedicated for rear passengers, with no factory wireless charging pad standard — Tesla's own wireless charging accessory only became available mid-2019 as an add-on.

Keyless & remote access85
#1 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Every 2019 Model 3 came standard with a keycard plus phone-as-key via Bluetooth through the Tesla app — full passive entry without a traditional key fob, ahead of most rivals' proximity-key systems at the time.

Camera & parking aids58
#7 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The 2019 Model 3 had a standard rearview camera and ultrasonic parking sensors, but no true 360-degree surround-view display — that capability arrived later via software — so parking aid coverage trailed segment rivals offering a factory 360 camera.

Head-up display availability8
#10 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

No head-up display was offered on the 2019 Model 3 on any trim; speed is shown only on the center touchscreen.

8Use-Case FitOne of the Model 3's weakest categories.1.50D
Kid & car-seat practicality55
#8 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

LATCH lower anchors are present for the two rear outboard seats but IIHS rated their ease of use only 'Acceptable' — recessed into stiff upholstery, taking extra effort with hook-style infant-seat connectors — and the sedan's trunk-only cargo layout (no low, wide liftgate opening) makes stroller loading less convenient than a crossover rival.

Family safety package88
#1 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The single-trim-lineup approach means every 2019 Model 3 — including the cheapest Standard Range Plus families actually buy — carries the same 5-star NHTSA rating, IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award, and standard forward collision warning/AEB/lane departure warning, with no safety feature paywalled behind an upper trim.

Family road-trip comfort54
#9 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Rear legroom (35.2 in) is on the tighter side for multi-hour trips with four-plus occupants, there are no rear climate vents or rear USB ports in the pre-refresh 2019 cabin, and the trunk-plus-frunk 15 cu ft of cargo space is workable but not generous once four seats are occupied and loaded with luggage.

Daily driving ease85
#1 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Instant torque, strong regenerative one-pedal driving, and a quiet, low-fatigue powertrain make the Model 3 widely praised as an effortless daily commuter, with Autopilot's standard adaptive cruise control reducing stop-and-go strain.

Commuting cost efficiency92
#1 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

At an EPA-estimated $550/year to run (national-average electricity, 15,000 mi/yr) and with zero oil changes or routine fluid service, the Standard Range Plus is among the cheapest vehicles in the dataset to commute in.

Parking & maneuverability56
#7 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Compact mid-size-sedan footprint and a standard rearview camera help in tight spaces, but the roughly 38.7 ft turning circle is wider than many segment rivals and there is no 360-degree camera to assist, so maneuvering is competent rather than standout.

Work capability15
#3 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The 2019 Model 3 had no factory or authorized tow hitch option and no published towing capacity — Tesla did not offer a Model 3 tow package until well after this model year — so it has essentially no work-towing capability.

Durability for work duty25
#5 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The Model 3 is a luxury-oriented commuter sedan with no fleet/work-duty track record as of 2019 and upholstery/trim choices (synthetic leather, glass roof) not suited to abuse — it was not marketed or used as a work vehicle.

Jobsite & upfit practicality10
#4 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

No onboard 120V power outlet, no tie-down points, no rack or upfit ecosystem, and a sedan trunk rather than an open bed — the Model 3 offers essentially nothing for jobsite use.

Long-distance comfort & range64
#10 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

A quiet, smooth highway ride and standard Autopilot reduce fatigue on long hauls, but the Standard Range Plus's 240-mile EPA range and sub-170 kW-for-most-of-the-year Supercharging cap mean more frequent, longer charging stops than the Long Range trim or a gas rival needs for fuel.

Outdoor & adventure capability20
#9 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Rear-wheel drive only on the Standard Range Plus, low ground clearance typical of a sport sedan, and no all-terrain or AWD option on this trim leave it pavement-bound with no meaningful off-pavement or towing-for-toys capability.

Gear & luggage flexibility56
#3 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The 60/40 split-folding rear seats plus the combined 15 cu ft trunk-and-frunk give reasonable flexibility for normal luggage, but there are no roof rails or factory roof-rack mounting points and no hitch option, limiting bulky-gear hauling versus an SUV/wagon rival.

9Driving ExperienceOne of the Model 3's strongest categories.2.92B-
Handling & agility82
#1 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

A low center of gravity from the underfloor battery pack, near-50/50 weight balance, and direct steering made the 2019 Model 3 widely regarded as the most engaging-handling mainstream sedan of its era, with composed body control through corners.

Steering feel68
#1 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Steering is accurate and quick to respond with selectable weight settings, but most reviewers found it short on genuine road feedback — precise rather than communicative.

Braking confidence66
#7 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Regenerative braking blends smoothly with the friction brakes for confident one-pedal driving, but the Model 3's stopping distances drew public scrutiny in 2018 (Consumer Reports' initial 152-ft-from-60 result) before a software update shortened them; 2019-built cars benefit from the revised tune but pedal feel still drew mixed reviewer reaction.

Powertrain smoothness & response92
#1 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

A single-speed electric motor delivers instant, linear torque with no shift shock, turbo lag, or stop/start roughness — among the smoothest powertrain calibrations of any 2019 vehicle regardless of price.

Drivetrain noise & vibration88
#1 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The electric motor is nearly silent under load, with only a faint high-frequency whine noted by some reviewers during hard acceleration — a clear advantage over any combustion rival in the segment.

Turning circle
~38.7 ft curb-to-curb (11.8 m)
22/100
#6 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

At roughly 38.7 ft, the Model 3's turning circle is wider than many compact and mid-size sedan rivals, making it less nimble in tight parking lots and U-turns despite its compact footprint.

Driving position & ergonomics63
#9 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

A low, sporty seating position with a wide power-adjustment range suits most drivers, but moving climate, mirror and nearly all secondary controls into the touchscreen means more menu-diving than a conventional sedan's switchgear, which some reviewers flagged as a distraction.

Fun-to-drive factor76
#1 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Even the entry Standard Range Plus delivers brisk, instant-torque acceleration (5.3-second 0-60) and genuinely engaging handling, and multiple 2019 outlets recommended it specifically as the enjoyable choice in its class, short of outright enthusiast-car status.

10Value & Market PositionOne of the Model 3's strongest categories.3.25B+
Standard equipment generosity72
#5 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Standard Range Plus included Autopilot hardware (cameras/radar/computer) on every car, a 15-inch touchscreen, heated front seats, keyless phone entry, and over-the-air updates for $39,990 — content rivals charged extra for — but Tesla priced the Autopilot convenience software itself ($1,500) and Full Self-Driving ($5,000–7,000) as separate options, and the car lacked basics some rivals bundled standard, like Apple CarPlay/Android Auto and a physical gauge cluster.

Feature value per dollar78
#3 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Strong acceleration, efficiency, and tech-for-the-price versus gas and EV rivals alike in 2019 — Long Range's ~310-mile EPA range and sub-5-second 0-60 undercut comparably equipped luxury sedans, a frequently cited strength in period reviews.

Trim & configuration breadth55
#8 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Only three trims (Standard Range Plus RWD, Long Range AWD, Performance AWD) spanning $39,990–$56,990, with no body-style, seating, or major drivetrain variety beyond RWD/AWD — reasonable price spread but a narrow, take-it-or-leave-it configuration set compared to rivals offering many more trim/option permutations.

Sales popularity & market acceptance92
#1 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The Model 3 was the best-selling plug-in electric car in the world for the third consecutive year in 2019 and outsold established luxury-sedan rivals like the BMW 3 Series and Mercedes C-Class in the US, a dramatic trajectory for a car only in its second full production year.

Brand desirability & image85
#3 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Tesla carried a strong aspirational halo in 2019 — waitlists for Performance and Long Range configurations, an engaged fan base, and a reputation for innovation — offset modestly by growing public scrutiny of Elon Musk and build-quality criticism in contemporary reviews.

Deals & incentive availability60
#7 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Tesla's no-haggle pricing meant essentially no dealer-style discounting, but buyers through 2019 still captured a shrinking federal EV tax credit ($3,750 Jan–Jun, $1,875 Jul–Dec, phasing to zero in 2020) plus various state incentives — a real, if diminishing, buyer benefit rather than MSRP-level discounting.

Model freshness88
#3 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

2019 is only the second full production year of the first Model 3 generation (launched 2017), running a current EV platform with no redesign on the near-term horizon — the next major update (the 2021 'Project Highland'-era refresh) was still years away.

Critical reception & awards85
#1 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The 2019 Model 3 collected strong critical recognition — Car and Driver 10Best 2019, AutoExpress Car of the Year and Premium Electric Car of the Year, and a Motor Trend Car of the Year finalist nod (for the related 2020 cycle) — reflecting broad reviewer enthusiasm despite some build-quality criticism.
