The verdict

A mixed-report mid-size luxury sedan, strong on value and held back by reliability.

The 2018 Tesla Model 3 pairs a 5-star NHTSA crash rating and a 310-mile EPA range with 130 MPGe combined efficiency and a $600-a-year fuel bill, undercutting rival luxury sedans on running cost while out-accelerating most of them to 60 mph in 5.1 seconds. Early-production quality is the real catch: Consumer Reports pulled its recommendation over panel gaps, paint defects and an overwhelmed service network, and the $49,000 Long Range RWD volume trim retains only about 46% of its value after five years. It's a compelling buy for a tech-forward commuter who can live with no CarPlay, a tight rear seat, and some first-year rough edges — less so for a buyer who wants dealer-network convenience and proven long-term durability.

Detailed scoring by subject

1Performance & PowertrainMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.77C-
Horsepower
271 hp (Long Range RWD, the sole/volume trim for most of 2018); ~346 hp Long Range Dual Motor AWD and ~450 hp Performance, both added mid-2018
36/100
#5 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Tesla does not publish a direct horsepower figure for non-Performance trims, so this is a corroborated third-party motor-output figure for the single-motor Long Range RWD that was the only Model 3 configuration sold for roughly the first half of 2018.

Torque
298 lb-ft (Long Range RWD); combined figures higher on the mid-2018 Dual Motor AWD and Performance
54/100
#2 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Peak torque from the single rear motor, delivered instantly from zero rpm as with any EV; third-party figures vary slightly (around 298–310 lb-ft) since Tesla does not publish an official number.

0–60 mph time
5.1 s (Long Range RWD, Tesla-quoted); 4.5 s Dual Motor AWD and 3.5 s Performance once those trims arrived mid-2018
68/100
#2 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Tesla's own quoted 0-60 mph time for the Long Range RWD was already quick for a mid-size sedan at launch, and the lineup gained a genuinely fast Performance trim partway through the model year.

Powertrain refinement83
#1 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Instant, silent, linear single-motor thrust with no lag and no gear steps was already a standout quality at the Model 3's 2018 launch. Held a bit below the top of the band because the early-production 2018 car (single-pane glass, no heat pump, less sound deadening than later refreshes) lets in more motor whine and road noise than the car's price class suggests.

Transmission behavior85
#2 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

A single-speed direct-drive reduction gear per motor means there is nothing to hunt for or shift through on any 2018 configuration. Just short of a perfect score because the one-pedal regenerative braking calibration is fixed rather than driver-adjustable.

AWD/4WD availability40
#9 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

For roughly the first half of 2018, Long Range RWD was the only configuration sold at all — no AWD option existed yet. Dual Motor AWD and Performance arrived only around mid-2018, and both sat above the RWD volume trim on price, so AWD was effectively restricted to the top of the range for the whole model year rather than widely available.

Powertrain lineup breadth35
#8 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Battery-electric only, with no gas, hybrid or PHEV alternative on this nameplate, and for 2018 specifically the lineup was narrower than it would become in 2019 — just Long Range RWD at launch, joined by Dual Motor AWD and Performance mid-year. No Standard Range or Mid Range trims existed yet in 2018.

2Efficiency & RangeMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.22C
Combined fuel economy
130 MPGe combined (Long Range RWD, as EPA-certified for MY2018)
100/100
#1 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

130 MPGe combined was class-leading for a 2018 EV sedan, beaten only by Tesla's own smaller/lighter offerings of the era.

City fuel economy
136 MPGe city (Long Range RWD)
100/100
#1 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

City is the Model 3's strongest mode, as with any EV, since aggressive regenerative braking recovers most stop-and-go energy and there is no idle consumption.

Highway fuel economy
123 MPGe highway (Long Range RWD)
100/100
#1 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Highway efficiency is strong for a 2018 EV sedan, though lower than city as expected since regenerative braking contributes less at steady highway speed.

Driving range
310 mi EPA (Long Range RWD and AWD; Performance also rated at 310 mi)
3/100
#10 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

310 miles was among the longest EPA ranges of any EV sold in 2018, and the figure held across RWD, the mid-2018 Dual Motor AWD, and Performance trims.

DC fast-charge peak rate
120 kW peak on Tesla Supercharger V2 (period-correct for 2018; later software updates raised ceiling rates on this hardware generation)
20/100
too few sedans scored for 2018 to rankCompare all →

120 kW was Tesla's own Supercharger V2 peak rate at the time the 2018 Model 3 was sold — strong for its era but well below the 250 kW ceiling later Model 3s would reach on V3 Superchargers (which did not exist until 2019).

10–80% fast-charge time
~30 min to add ~170 miles of range on a Supercharger (Tesla's own 2018 marketing claim for Long Range)
54/100
too few sedans scored for 2018 to rankCompare all →

Roughly 30 minutes to add most of a charge was competitive for 2018 but slower than what the same nameplate would achieve within a year once V3 Superchargers and software-unlocked charge rates arrived.

Estimated annual fuel cost
$600/yr EPA (15,000 mi at national-average electricity)
100/100
#1 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

$600 a year is among the cheapest running costs of any 2018 vehicle in this dataset, and cheaper still on off-peak home or solar charging.

Fuel requirements80
#3 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

No fuel grade to worry about, and the Model 3 plugs directly into Tesla's proprietary Supercharger network, already the densest DC fast-charging network in the US in 2018, with Level 2 home charging covering daily use cheaply. Held a few points short of the ceiling because the 120 kW charge-rate cap of this model year makes road-trip charging stops noticeably longer than on the Model 3's own later software-updated hardware.

3SafetyOne of the Model 3's strongest categories.2.81B-
NHTSA overall rating
5 stars overall (5/5 frontal, 5/5 side, 5/5 rollover)
100/100
#1 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

NHTSA tested the 2018 Model 3 (4DR RWD) and awarded 5 stars in every category with no 4-star results anywhere on the chart, and the agency noted it recorded the lowest overall probability of injury of any vehicle it had evaluated to that point.

IIHS awards & crashworthiness80
#5 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

IIHS rated the Model 3 Good across all crashworthiness tests (small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength, head restraints) and Superior for front crash prevention. The full Top Safety Pick+ award came in September 2019 once Tesla upgraded the headlights; cars built earlier in the 2018 model year (before the June 2018 running change) carried Acceptable-rated headlights that fell short of the award, so 2018-model-year cars straddle the Good-but-not-quite-TSP+ and TSP+ outcomes depending on build date.

Standard ADAS suite breadth65
#5 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, and camera-based blind-spot alerts were standard on every 2018 Model 3. Adaptive cruise control and Autosteer (lane centering) were gated behind the optional $5,000 Enhanced Autopilot package rather than standard equipment, and there was no radar-based rear cross-traffic alert at all.

Automatic emergency braking performance90
#1 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

IIHS rated the Model 3's front crash prevention system Superior for vehicle-to-vehicle performance, among the strongest results in the test at the time.

Blind-spot & cross-traffic coverage45
#9 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Blind-spot alerts are standard but ultrasonic/camera-based rather than radar, shown only as an on-screen highlight rather than a mirror-mounted indicator, and the 2018 Model 3 has no rear radar at all — rear cross-traffic alert is entirely absent, a notable gap versus segment rivals.

Lane keeping & centering62
#4 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Lane departure warning is standard, but true lane centering (Autosteer) is part of the paid Enhanced Autopilot option. Early-2018 Autosteer software was functional on the highway but reviewers noted occasional wander and hesitance in tighter curves, improving over point releases during the model year.

Adaptive cruise & highway assist68
#6 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Traffic-Aware Cruise Control (full-speed-range, including stop-and-go) was capable when equipped, but it required purchasing the $5,000 Enhanced Autopilot package rather than being standard, and 2018-era reviews noted occasional late braking and slow resume behavior in heavy traffic.

Hands-free driving availability15
#2 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

No hands-free driving system existed on the 2018 Model 3. Autopilot and the separately-sold Full Self-Driving option both required continuous hands-on-wheel engagement; FSD was sold as a future-capability option with none of its advertised autonomous features actually enabled in 2018.

Headlight performance62
#1 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

IIHS initially rated the Model 3's LED reflector headlights Acceptable in May 2018; Tesla revised the headlight unit and cars built after June 2018 earned a Good rating. Because the 2018 model year spans both builds, the volume-trim result is mixed rather than uniformly Good.

Outward visibility55
#10 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Forward visibility benefits from thin A-pillars and a low dash/console, but reviewers and owners consistently flagged small side mirrors and a small rear glass/mirror as compromising rear and three-quarter visibility, a widely-noted ergonomic weak point for the generation.

Child-seat (LATCH) usability58
#7 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Lower LATCH anchors exist only at the two outboard rear positions (gap-style, reached between cushion and seatback) with no center lower anchors; testers found the anchors not deeply recessed but stiff upholstery made connecting thin infant-seat clips effortful. Top tethers for all three positions are accessed from the trunk.

Flat floor and no transmission tunnel give competitive front legroom for the mid-size sedan segment.

Rear headroom
37.7 in
68/100
#5 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Fastback roofline trims rear headroom somewhat versus a traditional three-box sedan, but the glass roof still leaves solid clearance.

Rear legroom
35.2 in
32/100
#7 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Rear legroom sits toward the low end of the mid-size sedan band; owners and reviewers note the low rear seat cushion compounds the tight knee/foot room.

Cargo/trunk volume
15 cu ft rear trunk + 3.1 cu ft front trunk (frunk)
50/100
#5 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Mid-pack trunk volume for the segment on its own, but the front trunk adds meaningful extra capacity not available on a gas sedan.

In-cabin storage & clever solutions75
#1 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The front trunk plus a deep, configurable center console bin (with sliding cover and two USB ports) stand out versus gas-sedan rivals, though there's no under-floor cargo well in the rear trunk yet.

Seat comfort58
#10 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Front 12-way power seats with good bolstering are well regarded, but the rear bench is widely criticized for a low cushion that leaves knees elevated and little under-thigh support.

Ride quality46
#10 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Early 2018 Model 3s rode on a notably firm, sometimes busy suspension tune that struggled to absorb sharp bumps, a frequent complaint in period reviews.

Cabin quietness48
#10 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The silent powertrain actually exposes more tire and wind noise than in a comparable gas car; early-build Model 3s used single-pane side glass and frameless doors, adding wind noise at highway speed.

Climate & comfort features68
#3 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Dual-zone automatic climate control and heated front/rear seats were standard on the Long Range trim that led 2018 deliveries, plus app-based remote pre-conditioning; no heated steering wheel was offered yet.

5Cost of OwnershipOne of the Model 3's weakest categories.1.50D
Base MSRP
$45,000 (Mid Range RWD, 260 mi — added Oct 18, 2018; for most of 2018 the cheapest orderable trim was Long Range RWD at $49,000, since the originally-advertised $35,000 Standard Model 3 was not actually buildable until 2019)
30/100
#5 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Tesla's 2018 lineup evolved through the year; entry price dropped only once Mid Range RWD launched in October 2018.

Volume-Trim Price
$49,000 (Long Range RWD, 310 mi — the dominant seller for most of 2018 before Mid Range and AWD variants arrived late in the year)
26/100
#5 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Long Range RWD was effectively the only configuration Tesla was delivering at volume through the first three quarters of 2018.

5-Year Maintenance & Repair Cost
~$1,800 over 5 years (industry estimate; no oil changes/engine service, but early-production fit-and-finish issues add modest repair risk)
100/100
#1 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

CarEdge/industry EV maintenance data puts routine Model 3 upkeep near $1,100-$1,200 over 5 years; added a margin for 2018's documented early-build quality variance (panel gaps, trim issues).

5-Year Resale Value Retention
~46% of MSRP retained after 5 years
37/100
#5 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

iSeeCars' depreciation study found Model 3 retains roughly 45.5% of value after 5 years — the best-retaining EV in its study, but still well behind strong gas/hybrid sedans.

Basic warranty
4 yr / 50,000 mi bumper-to-bumper
50/100
#2 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Standard Tesla basic vehicle limited warranty for the 2018 model year.

Powertrain warranty
8 yr / 120,000 mi battery & drive unit (Long Range/Performance trims); 8 yr / 100,000 mi on Standard/Mid Range
60/100
#2 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Tesla's 2018 battery and drive unit warranty was 8 years across the range, with the mileage cap varying by battery size/trim.

Complimentary maintenance & perks55
#7 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

No included scheduled-maintenance plan — Tesla's 2018 Model 3 ownership perks were limited to roadside assistance during the warranty period and free over-the-air software updates; unlike contemporary Model S/X, free unlimited Supercharging was not standard on Model 3.

Effective 5-Year Ownership Cost
$28,260 (≈$26,460 depreciation + $1,800 maintenance)
51/100
#3 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

$49,000 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (46% retained, or about $22,540) leaves about $26,460 in depreciation. Add the projected $1,800 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $28,260 in total.

6Reliability & QualityThe Model 3's lowest-graded category.1.40D
Predicted reliability55
#8 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Consumer Reports initially predicted 'average' reliability for the new MY2018 Model 3 (inferring from shared Model S components), but as owner data accumulated through 2018 the car slipped to below-average and CR pulled its Recommended status in Feb 2019, citing paint, trim/body hardware and drivetrain complaints concentrated in this early production run.

Brand reliability track record36
#9 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Tesla's multi-year dependability standing through this period was consistently weak: CR's October 2018 Annual Auto Reliability Survey had Tesla among the brands sliding backward, and JD Power's contemporaneous Initial Quality and Vehicle Dependability studies placed Tesla near the bottom of the industry.

Recall & TSB history60
#7 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Several recalls touch 2018 Model 3 production: front suspension lateral-link fasteners (23V235, 2018-19), seat belt warning chime (24V376, 2017-23), forward collision avoidance/electrical (24V153, 2018-22), and rearview display timing on Autopilot 2.5 cars (22V169, 2018-19). Typical-to-slightly-elevated activity for a first-generation platform, but none are systemic fire or powertrain-failure campaigns.

Powertrain durability reputation75
#3 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The single-speed EV drivetrain and 2018-vintage battery pack were unproven at launch, but the subsequent fleet track record has been strong: Tesla's own aggregated data shows Long Range packs retaining roughly 85% capacity at 200,000 miles (about 1%/year degradation after an initial step-down), and drive units/structural electronics routinely passing 250,000 miles without systemic failure.

Interior material quality55
#10 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Reviewers praised the minimalist, screen-centric cabin design as feeling premium at a glance, but criticized hard, low-grade plastics on the door panels and lower console and an unusually spartan feature set (no gauge cluster, few physical controls) for the price point.

Fit & finish32
#10 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

This was the era's most widely documented build-quality problem for the car: Munro & Associates' teardown found panel gaps so large the CEO said 'you can see the gaps from the moon,' independent measurements showed hood and door gaps roughly 1.5-2x a comparable Subaru Crosstrek's, and about 12% of owners reported paint defects (orange peel, chips, scratches) in early surveys. Tesla made measurable improvements through 2018 but starting from a poor baseline.

Dealer & service network35
#10 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Tesla's direct-sales service network was overwhelmed by Model 3 volume through 2018: unreturned calls and emails, delayed repairs, and crash-damaged cars waiting months for parts were widely reported even as Tesla added 27 store/service locations in Q4 2018 alone (378 total). A quarter of owners still waited 10+ days for a service appointment into Q3 2019.

Parts availability & repair cost32
#10 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Tesla controls its parts supply chain tightly and prices reflect it — a Model 3 front bumper cover ran $800-1,200 versus $300-500 for a typical sedan — and body shops reported 2-4 week parts waits plus the need for specialized Celette fixture jigs most independent shops lacked. Insurance for the car ran 18-35% higher than comparable gas sedans largely on repair-cost grounds.

7Technology & InfotainmentMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.17C
Touchscreen size
15 in landscape touchscreen
94/100
#1 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

A single 15-inch center touchscreen handles all infotainment and vehicle controls; it is the largest in the segment at the time.

Infotainment UX & responsiveness82
#2 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The interface was praised as fast and clean for 2018, among the most responsive in any car at the time, though reviewers flagged that routing nearly every control through the screen pulls eyes off the road.

Wireless CarPlay / Android Auto15
#8 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Tesla does not offer Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, wired or wireless, by design — the vehicle's own OS replaces phone projection entirely.

Voice control & native navigation63
#2 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Native navigation (standard, map-data based with live traffic and Supercharger routing) was well regarded, but 2018 voice control was limited to basic commands rather than natural-language requests.

Audio system quality75
#7 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

A 14-speaker premium audio system was standard on the Long Range trim that led 2018 deliveries and was well reviewed for clarity and output.

Digital instrument cluster35
#9 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The Model 3 has no instrument cluster in front of the driver at all — speed and driving info are shown only on the shared center touchscreen, a polarizing layout that several reviewers flagged as requiring more eye travel than even an analog gauge cluster.

OTA update capability95
#1 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Tesla shipped full-vehicle over-the-air updates throughout 2018 that added real functionality — raised AEB operating speed, Wi-Fi-based update delivery, summon, and Autopilot refinements — well beyond infotainment-only updates.

Companion app & remote functions88
#1 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The free Tesla app shipped standard with remote lock/unlock, climate preconditioning, vehicle locate, and Bluetooth phone-as-key, among the most capable companion apps in the industry at the time.

Charging ports & device power42
#6 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Only two USB-A ports in the front center console were available in 2018, with no rear-seat USB and no factory-integrated wireless charging pad (wireless charging required an aftermarket accessory).

Keyless & remote access80
#1 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Standard keyless entry via a key card and Bluetooth phone-as-key, with no physical key required to drive — ahead of most sedans in its price class for 2018.

Camera & parking aids55
#8 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

A rearview camera plus front and rear ultrasonic parking sensors were standard, but no 360-degree surround-view camera was offered on any 2018 trim.

Head-up display availability10
#8 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

No head-up display was offered on any 2018 Model 3 trim; speed and driving data appear only on the center touchscreen.

8Use-Case FitOne of the Model 3's weakest categories.1.54D
Kid & car-seat practicality58
#5 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Standard LATCH anchors and a wide trunk opening make loading gear straightforward, but the low rear seat cushion and modest rear door aperture make car-seat installation and child access more fiddly than class leaders.

Family safety package76
#2 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The 2018 Model 3 earned a perfect 5-star NHTSA rating in every category with standard forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking, but the adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping features families most want cost an extra $5,000 Enhanced Autopilot package.

Family road-trip comfort52
#9 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Good front-seat comfort, dual-zone climate, and a decent trunk-plus-frunk combination help on long trips, but the criticized rear seat cushion and no rear climate vents limit comfort for rear-row family members on multi-hour drives.

Daily driving ease75
#6 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Instant EV torque, smooth single-speed acceleration, and strong regenerative braking for near one-pedal driving make stop-and-go traffic genuinely relaxing, offset slightly by the firmer-than-average ride on rough city streets.

Commuting cost efficiency92
#1 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

At 130 combined MPGe and roughly 26 kWh/100mi, home charging costs a small fraction of gasoline for an equivalent commute, among the cheapest per-mile running costs of any 2018 sedan.

Parking & maneuverability70
#1 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

A relatively tight ~38.7-foot turning circle and standard rear camera/sensors make city parking manageable, though the lack of a 360-degree camera leaves tight-space confidence a notch below segment leaders.

Work capability18
#4 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Tesla's US owner's manual does not approve the 2018 Model 3 for towing and no factory tow package was offered in North America, and its sedan trunk has none of a truck/SUV's work-hauling capacity.

Durability for work duty35
#4 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Early-production 2018 Model 3s were widely reported to have inconsistent build quality (panel gaps, trim fit) and had no fleet-use track record yet, making hard-use durability unproven.

Jobsite & upfit practicality20
#3 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

No onboard 120V/240V power outlet, no tie-down points or rack ecosystem, and a narrow trunk opening give the 2018 Model 3 essentially no jobsite utility.

Long-distance comfort & range68
#8 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

310 miles of EPA range (Long Range RWD) plus Tesla's mature 2018 Supercharger network support real road trips, and Enhanced Autopilot (when optioned) eases highway fatigue, though the criticized rear seat and some wind/tire noise cap comfort over very long hauls.

Outdoor & adventure capability25
#9 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Standard ground clearance, RWD-only availability for most of 2018 (dual-motor AWD didn't begin deliveries until mid-2018), no roof rail/tow accessory ecosystem, and no towing approval leave it pavement-bound.

Gear & luggage flexibility40
#8 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

60/40 split-folding rear seats plus the front trunk add useful flexibility for luggage, but the sedan's trunk opening and sloped trunk lid restrict bulky or tall gear that an SUV or hatchback would swallow easily.

9Driving ExperienceOne of the Model 3's strongest categories.2.79B-
Handling & agility85
#1 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

A low center of gravity from the floor-mounted battery pack and near 50/50 weight distribution give the 2018 Model 3 glued-to-the-road composure and sharp turn-in that reviewers rated among the best in its class.

Steering feel62
#4 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Steering is accurate and well-weighted with selectable effort settings, but reviewers consistently describe it as numb and lacking genuine road feedback.

Braking confidence55
#10 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Consumer Reports flagged inconsistent and longer-than-expected 60-0 mph stopping distances on early 2018 cars (prompting a software fix), and Car and Driver separately noted unusually high variation in 70-0 braking results.

Powertrain smoothness & response92
#1 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Single-speed EV drivetrain delivers instant, linear torque with no shift shock or turbo lag, widely cited as one of the smoothest powertrains in any 2018 vehicle.

Drivetrain noise & vibration90
#1 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The electric motor is nearly silent under load with no combustion vibration, to the point that reviewers note it makes tire and wind noise more noticeable by comparison.

Turning circle
38.7 ft curb-to-curb
22/100
#6 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Turning circle is toward the wider end of the sedan band, reflecting the 2018 Model 3's relatively long wheelbase for its footprint.

Driving position & ergonomics58
#10 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

A low, sporty seating position and clean sightlines work well, but routing climate, mirror, and other basic controls through the center touchscreen instead of physical switches drew consistent ergonomic criticism in 2018 reviews.

Fun-to-drive factor82
#1 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Quick, linear acceleration combined with genuinely engaging handling made the 2018 Model 3 a favorite among enthusiast reviewers for an everyday sedan, EV or otherwise.

10Value & Market PositionThe Model 3's best-graded category.2.99B-
Standard equipment generosity68
#6 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

2018 Model 3 came standard with a 15-inch touchscreen, keyless entry, heated front seats and standard Autopilot hardware, but Enhanced Autopilot ($5,000) and Full Self-Driving ($3,000) were costly extras, and early production bundled some trim/comfort items into a mandatory Premium Upgrades package rather than base spec.

Feature value per dollar82
#2 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

310-mile range, sub-5.1s 0-60 (Long Range RWD) and Autopilot hardware at ~$49,000 undercut rival luxury sedans with comparable range/performance, and the Model 3 was recognized as 2018's best-selling luxury car in the US on that strength.

Trim & configuration breadth55
#8 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The lineup was narrow for most of 2018 (Long Range RWD only through Q1-Q2), widening late in the year with Performance AWD (July), Long Range AWD (Sept) and Mid Range RWD (Oct) — reasonable breadth by year-end but no cheap entry trim and no base/work-spec option all year.

Sales popularity & market acceptance93
#1 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

145,846 Model 3s sold globally in 2018 (~138,000 in the US), making it the best-selling luxury car in America that year and the 11th best-selling car overall — a dramatic ramp from near-zero volume in 2017.

Brand desirability & image80
#3 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Tesla carried strong aspirational cachet in 2018 and the Model 3 sold faster than any rival luxury sedan despite well-publicized 'production hell' manufacturing struggles, indicating brand pull outweighed the operational narrative for buyers.

Deals & incentive availability40
#10 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Tesla did not negotiate price or offer manufacturer discounts in 2018 — demand far exceeded supply with a persistent order backlog — though buyers who took delivery in 2018 still qualified for the full $7,500 federal EV tax credit before the phase-out began January 1, 2019.

Model freshness88
#2 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

2018 was only the second model year of the first Model 3 generation (launched July 2017, next redesign not until 2024), on Tesla's newest platform and software stack with no imminent replacement risk.

Critical reception & awards76
#3 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

A finalist for Motor Trend's 2018 Car of the Year (did not win) with widely positive reviews overall; notably, Consumer Reports withheld its recommendation in May 2018 over a 152-foot 60-0 braking distance, then restored it within days after Tesla shipped an OTA brake-software update that cut stopping distance to 133 feet — an unusual mid-cycle reversal that reflects well on responsiveness but shows the car shipped with a real flaw.
