The verdict

A mixed-report mid-size luxury sedan, strong on safety and held back by ownership.

The 2022 Model 3 is the cheapest way into a Tesla, pairing EPA-rated 132 MPGe and a 272-mile range on the base RWD trim with genuinely quick, smooth acceleration and class-leading crash-test scores. But 2022 was also the year Tesla's build quality took a real step back — Consumer Reports rated it less reliable than its peers, and buyers who paid that year's inflated, repeatedly-hiked sticker price watched Tesla cut new-car prices sharply the following January. It's an easy daily driver and a cheap one to run, but go in expecting service-network headaches and no CarPlay.

Jump to scores

Strengths

  • Among the cheapest cars on sale to actually run
  • Instant, seamless powertrain with none of an ICE car's rough edges
  • Top-tier crash protection out of the box

What holds it back

  • 2022 was a rough build-quality year for this nameplate
  • A 2022 buyer likely overpaid, and resale reflects it
  • No CarPlay, no gauge cluster — everything lives on one screen

Horsepower
283 hp (RWD, Standard Range)
39/100
#4 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Tesla does not publish an official horsepower figure for the single rear motor; 283 hp is the figure most consistently reported by independent outlets for the 2022 RWD/Standard Range trim with the CATL LFP pack.

Torque
317 lb-ft (RWD, Standard Range)
60/100
#2 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Peak torque for the single rear permanent-magnet motor, not officially published by Tesla but consistently reported across independent spec databases.

0-60 mph time
5.8 s (RWD, Standard Range)
57/100
#3 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The 2022 RWD/Standard Range model year switched to a heavier CATL LFP pack, which slowed 0-60 versus the lighter 2021 Standard Range Plus (5.3 s) to 5.8 s.

Powertrain refinement94
#1 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Single-speed rear motor delivers instant, linear torque with no shift shock, turbo lag, or hybrid-transition harshness — among the smoothest powertrain feel in the segment.

Transmission behavior93
#1 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Single-speed fixed-gear reduction with no shift events, hunting, or CVT drone; delivery is seamless from a stop through highway speed.

AWD/4WD availability58
#9 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The volume RWD/Standard Range trim is rear-drive only; dual-motor AWD is available one step up on Long Range and standard on Performance, so AWD exists across most of the range but not on the base/volume configuration being scored.

Powertrain lineup breadth28
#9 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

All three 2022 Model 3 trims (RWD, Long Range AWD, Performance AWD) are the same battery-electric powertrain family differing only in battery chemistry/motor count — there is no gas, hybrid, or PHEV alternative, so breadth across propulsion TYPES is effectively single-powertrain.

NHTSA overall rating
5 stars overall (5/5 frontal, 5/5 side, 5/5 rollover)
100/100
#1 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

NHTSA awarded the Model 3 a perfect 5-star overall rating across frontal, side, and rollover tests; this rating has held for the sedan since its original test and carries over for the 2022 model year with no structural changes.

IIHS awards & crashworthiness95
#2 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

IIHS rated the 2022 Model 3 Good across every crashworthiness test (small overlap front driver and passenger side, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength, head restraints/seats) and the vehicle earned the top Top Safety Pick+ award for the year.

Standard ADAS suite breadth88
#3 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, Traffic-Aware Cruise Control, Autosteer (lane centering), and blind-spot/cross-traffic camera monitoring are all standard on every 2022 Model 3 trim with no option-gating; only the Enhanced Autopilot/FSD features (Navigate on Autopilot, auto lane change, Summon) are paid add-ons.

Automatic emergency braking performance80
#5 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

IIHS rated the 2022 Model 3's front crash prevention Superior for both vehicle-to-vehicle (avoided collisions at 12 and 25 mph) and pedestrian detection day and night. Score is held just below the top band because the same-year vision-only transition (radar removed, replaced by camera-based Tesla Vision) coincided with a documented spike in NHTSA phantom-braking complaints for 2021-2022 Model 3/Y, an active real-world reliability concern despite the lab result.

Blind-spot & cross-traffic coverage60
#8 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Blind-spot and rear cross-traffic monitoring are standard on every trim via camera, shown on the center screen plus small pillar-mounted indicator LEDs, and Autosteer will resist a lane change into a detected vehicle. Coverage is alert-based rather than an active-braking cross-traffic system, and owner/reviewer feedback consistently flags the tiny pillar indicators and screen-based display as less immediately legible than a traditional mirror-mounted warning light.

Lane keeping & centering68
#5 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Autosteer lane centering is standard and generally confident on well-marked highways, but 2022 reviews during the vision-only transition noted more frequent disengagements, hesitation at lane-marking gaps, and occasional corrective wobble compared with the radar-assisted version of the system.

Adaptive cruise & highway assist65
#10 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Traffic-Aware Cruise Control (full-speed-range, stop-and-go) is standard on every trim, but the highway-assist layer that adds automatic lane changes and interchange navigation (Navigate on Autopilot) is locked behind the paid Enhanced Autopilot or FSD packages. The standalone standard ACC also inherited the 2022 phantom-braking complaints tied to the radar-to-vision transition.

Hands-free driving availability15
#4 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Tesla offers no hands-free driving mode on the 2022 Model 3. Both standard Autopilot and the optional FSD Beta require continuous hands-on-wheel torque and are explicitly Level 2 driver-assist systems, unlike GM Super Cruise or Ford BlueCruise which permit hands-off operation on mapped roads.

Headlight performance85
#4 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

IIHS rated the 2022 Model 3's standard LED projector headlights Good — the top rating — with good low-beam visibility on straightaways and curves and strong high-beam reach, plus standard automatic high-beam assist. No matrix/adaptive-beam capability keeps it short of a top-band score.

Outward visibility55
#10 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Standard rearview camera and center-screen surround camera views compensate for genuinely limited natural sightlines — reviewers and owners repeatedly cite a small rear window and thick C-pillars creating a significant direct rear blind spot, and the tiny pillar-mounted blind-spot LEDs are a weak substitute for direct mirror visibility.

Child-seat (LATCH) usability72
#6 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The Model 3 seats 5, so this item applies. Lower LATCH anchors sit about an inch into the seat bight but reviewers found them surprisingly easy to connect despite not being exposed, and two child seats fit the outboard rear positions without excessive force; the lack of a center-position LATCH and no rear top-tether anchors keep it out of the top band.

#1 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Front headroom is set by the fixed all-glass roof panel shared across every 2022 Model 3 trim; there is no sunroof-equipped variant to differentiate.

Front legroom

68/100
#1 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Front legroom figure is consistent across all three 2022 trims (RWD, Long Range AWD, Performance AWD), which share a single interior package.

Rear headroom
37.7 in (under fixed glass roof)
68/100
#7 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Rear headroom benefits from the Model 3's fastback glass roof but is still constrained by the sedan's lower overall roofline versus taller rivals.

Rear legroom
35.2 in
32/100
#8 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Rear legroom is mid-pack for the mid-size sedan class and unchanged for the 2022 model year, which carried over the second-generation interior with no wheelbase change.

Cargo/trunk volume
19.8 cu ft rear trunk (23 cu ft total incl. 3.1 cu ft front trunk)
98/100
#3 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The rear trunk alone is unusually deep for a sedan thanks to the Model 3's wide trunk opening and flat load floor; Tesla also adds a separate front trunk (frunk) not captured by this item, which independently raises total usable cargo to roughly 23 cu ft.

In-cabin storage & clever solutions78
#1 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The front trunk is a genuine segment rarity for a sedan, paired with a deep center console bin, wireless dual phone charging tray, and a largely flat rear floor from the lack of a transmission tunnel — a real practicality edge even if individual bins are unremarkable.

Seat comfort60
#10 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Seats are supportive but criticized by some reviewers for being firm and flat relative to class leaders; Tesla permanently removed power lumbar adjustment from the front passenger seat in mid-2021, a reduction that carried through the full 2022 model year.

Ride quality60
#10 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Reviewers describe the ride as firm and sporty rather than plush, with a noticeably stiffer character on the larger wheel options (Performance's 20-inch wheels); composed but not segment-leading comfort.

Cabin quietness68
#9 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

No engine or exhaust noise and acoustic front glass keep the cabin quiet at low speeds, but wind and road noise become more noticeable at highway speeds, particularly on Performance's wider tires.

Climate & comfort features82
#1 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Heated front and rear seats and a heated steering wheel are standard on every 2022 trim, dual-zone automatic climate control is standard, and the Tesla app supports remote climate preconditioning — a richer standard comfort-feature set than most mainstream sedan rivals.

5Cost of OwnershipThe Model 3's lowest-graded category.0.44F
Base MSRP
$46,990 (Model 3 RWD, LFP standard-range); rose from ~$44,990 at the start of 2022 to $46,990 by spring and held there into Q4
24/100
#3 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

2022 was a seller's-market year for Tesla: repeated price increases on nickel-based packs (Long Range, Performance) and demand-driven hikes on the LFP-based base RWD pushed every trim up multiple times during the model year. The entry RWD lands mid-upper band for a sedan — pricier than a Camry or Accord, but still the cheapest way into a Tesla.

Volume-Trim Price
$57,990 (Model 3 Long Range AWD) by mid-2022, up from $50,990 in January — four separate price increases during the model year; Performance AWD reached ~$62,990–$63,990 over the same period
0/100
#5 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Long Range AWD was the volume configuration in 2022 — used-market listing volume for 2022 Model 3s skews toward Long Range over base RWD, and it was the trim most reviewers and buyers converged on for the added range and all-wheel drive. Nickel-price-driven increases took it from $50,990 in January to $57,990 by June, the steepest run of mid-year hikes in the car's history, landing it at the very top of the sedan volume-trim band.

5-Year Maintenance & Repair Cost
~$3,600 over 5 years (maintenance + repairs); no oil changes, belts, or transmission service
83/100
#2 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The Model 3's EV drivetrain means minimal scheduled service — cabin filter, tire rotation, periodic brake-fluid check — and regenerative braking extends pad life well past typical intervals. This is consistently the car's strongest ownership line item, well under the sedan segment's gas-powered norm.

5-Year Resale Value Retention
~45% of MSRP projected after 5 years — bottom third of the sedan band
33/100
#6 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The 2022 model year was hit especially hard: buyers paid inflated, demand-driven 2022 prices, then Tesla cut new-vehicle prices sharply starting January 2023, instantly undercutting every 2022 car's resale value. Three years in, a 2022 Model 3 has still retained roughly 71% against its (already-high) original price, but the pace of depreciation accelerates as the car ages past the point where the original-MSRP comparison flatters it; projected to the full 5-year mark this settles near the Model 3's longer-run average of ~45% retained.

Basic warranty
4 yr / 50,000 mi Basic Vehicle Limited Warranty
50/100
#2 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Four years/50,000 miles was Tesla's standard basic warranty across the Model 3 lineup throughout 2022, unchanged from prior years — mid-band for the segment, ahead of the 3-year/36,000-mile norm at most legacy brands but short on mileage for an EV typically driven on cheap electricity.

Powertrain warranty
8 yr Battery & Drive Unit — 100,000 mi on RWD, 120,000 mi on Long Range/Performance; minimum 70% capacity retention
60/100
#2 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Eight years is the EV-standard term, but the explicit 70%-capacity-retention floor is a meaningful, contractual guarantee against degradation rather than a vague promise — the strongest single line in the Model 3's ownership case for 2022, as in every other model year.

Complimentary maintenance & perks42
#9 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

2022 buyers got roadside assistance for the 4-year/50,000-mile basic term and nothing else standard: no complimentary scheduled maintenance, and no included Supercharging credit on any trim for most of the year (Tesla's free-Supercharging-on-Premium/Performance promotion did not exist yet in 2022 — that came later). Referral-code bonus Supercharging miles existed but depended on using someone else's code, not a purchase-included benefit. This sits at the bottom of the segment, similar to the car's position in every surrounding model year.

Effective 5-Year Ownership Cost
$35,495 (≈$31,895 depreciation + $3,600 maintenance)
32/100
#5 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

$57,990 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (45% retained, or about $26,096) leaves about $31,895 in depreciation. Add the projected $3,600 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $35,495 in total.

6Reliability & QualityOne of the Model 3's weakest categories.1.10D
Predicted reliability38
#10 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Consumer Reports' subscriber-survey-based assessment of the 2022 Model 3 found it less reliable than other cars from the same model year, with build-quality, electrical, climate-system and EV-specific trouble spots — not merely 'average' as earlier Model 3 generations had scored.

Brand reliability track record32
#10 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Tesla's first appearance in J.D. Power's Vehicle Dependability Study (model-year 2020 vehicles, published 2023) posted 242 problems-per-100 vehicles against a 186 industry average — well below the field — and Tesla has historically sat in the bottom tier of Consumer Reports' brand reliability rankings.

Recall & TSB history45
#10 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The 2022 Model 3 carries roughly 17-18 NHTSA recall campaigns spanning this generation, an unusually high count, though the individual campaigns (pedestrian warning system sound, instrument panel font size, rear visibility software, seat belt buckle fastening) are mostly software-correctable or minor rather than structural, fire, or powertrain failures.

Powertrain durability reputation85
#2 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The Model 3's electric drive unit was engineered toward a roughly 1-million-mile design target and real-world high-mileage examples (150,000-380,000+ miles) show original batteries and drive units still functioning with batteries typically retaining 85%+ state of health well past 200,000 miles — a strong durability track record with no systemic drivetrain failure pattern.

Interior material quality55
#10 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Reviewers praise the minimalist cabin's comfortable seats and generous use of real materials in high-touch zones, but note the 2022 model year specifically swapped some soft-touch door-panel surfacing for harder plastic versus 2021, with scattered interior niggles (visor magnet, lower door trim) — competitive but not class-leading for the price.

Fit & finish40
#10 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Multiple independent sources corroborate that the 2022 Model 3 had more fit-and-finish issues than the prior model year, including visible panel gaps where the bumper meets the fenders (absent on the 2021 car), and Consumer Reports' top reported trouble spots for the model year are noises/leaks and paint/trim defects.

Dealer & service network42
#10 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Tesla's direct-sales service network is far thinner than a legacy franchise network, and 2022-era owner reports describe service appointment waits of weeks to over a month plus rushed same-day pickup windows; broader EV-segment J.D. Power service-satisfaction data from this period shows BEV owners scoring satisfaction roughly 68 points below gas-vehicle owners.

Parts availability & repair cost30
#10 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Tesla tightly controls its parts supply chain, producing meaningfully higher part prices (e.g. a front bumper cover roughly double a comparable gas sedan's) and 2-4 week parts lead times, plus mandatory ADAS recalibration after most collision repairs; average repair costs run 20-30% above comparable gas-powered sedans.

7Technology & InfotainmentMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.37C+
Touchscreen size
15.0 in center touchscreen (also widely reported as 15.4 in)
94/100
#1 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Single central touchscreen is the sole infotainment display, unchanged across 2021-2022; Tesla's own spec sheet cites 15.0 in while several independent outlets measure/report 15.4 in diagonal.

Infotainment UX & responsiveness88
#1 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Tesla's infotainment is consistently rated among the fastest and most fluid in the industry, with a logical single-screen layout and frequent OTA refinements, despite controversially moving nearly all controls (including gear selector/turn-signal stalks on later cars, though 2022 still retained stalks) into the touchscreen.

Wireless CarPlay / Android Auto10
#10 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Tesla does not support Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, wired or wireless, on any model including the 2022 Model 3 — a deliberate design choice in favor of its own proprietary infotainment stack.

Voice control & native navigation68
#6 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Native navigation integrates real-time traffic and Supercharger trip planning that is genuinely useful for EV ownership, but the built-in voice assistant handles a narrower command set than smartphone-based assistants and reviewers describe it as functional rather than conversational.

Audio system quality80
#7 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

A premium audio system (per Tesla's own branding) with multiple speakers and a subwoofer was standard equipment across the entire 2022 Model 3 lineup, not a paid upgrade — unusually generous for the segment.

Digital instrument cluster15
#10 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The 2022 Model 3 has no instrument cluster behind the steering wheel at all — speed and driving-status info is relocated to the top-left corner of the central touchscreen, a more extreme omission than merely a low-quality cluster.

OTA update capability95
#1 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Tesla pioneered whole-vehicle over-the-air updates that add new features, fix bugs, and even altered braking performance via software in this exact generation — the broadest OTA scope in the industry during this model year.

Companion app & remote functions88
#1 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The Tesla app supports phone-as-key, remote climate preconditioning, remote start/lock, vehicle locate, and charging control at no subscription cost — a richer free remote feature set than most rivals offer even with a paid app tier.

Charging ports & device power88
#1 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Four USB-C ports spread across front and rear plus a dual-phone wireless charging tray up front is a generous standard allotment for the segment.

Keyless & remote access88
#1 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Standard phone-as-key via Bluetooth plus key-card backup eliminates the need for a traditional key fob entirely, with full remote-start-equivalent climate and unlock functions via the app.

Camera & parking aids58
#9 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

A rear backup camera and surround birds-eye camera view are standard, but the mid-2022 production change that deleted ultrasonic parking sensors in favor of camera-only 'Tesla Vision' parking assist was initially regarded as a step down in precision for cars built after the transition.

Head-up display availability5
#10 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

No head-up display was offered on the Model 3 in any trim for the 2022 model year; Tesla did not add a HUD to this nameplate until the 2024 'Highland' refresh.

8Use-Case FitOne of the Model 3's weakest categories.1.70C-
Kid & car-seat practicality58
#6 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

LATCH anchors are present at both rear outboard positions and the wide trunk opening eases stroller loading, but the sedan's lower roofline and narrower rear door aperture versus an SUV make car-seat installation a bit more of a reach for some parents.

Family safety package78
#6 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Standard Autopilot (adaptive cruise + autosteer), strong NHTSA 5-star overall ratings, and IIHS Top Safety Pick-caliber crash performance are all included at the base/volume trim price with no safety-feature paywall.

Family road-trip comfort60
#9 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Rear legroom and headroom are mid-pack for the segment and the rear bench is tight for three across, but the deep trunk plus frunk help offset limited rear amenities (no rear climate vents until a later running change, no rear entertainment screen).

Daily driving ease88
#1 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Instant, smooth EV torque, strong one-pedal regenerative braking, and a quiet low-speed cabin make stop-and-go traffic notably less fatiguing than in a comparable ICE sedan.

Commuting cost efficiency92
#1 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

EPA-rated 132 MPGe combined on the RWD volume trim translates to among the cheapest per-mile running costs of any vehicle on sale, with minimal scheduled maintenance versus an ICE powertrain.

Parking & maneuverability65
#3 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Compact sedan footprint is easy to place in traffic, but a 38.8 ft curb-to-curb turning circle is wider than some segment rivals, and the mid-2022 deletion of ultrasonic parking sensors on later-build cars (replaced by camera-only Tesla Vision) temporarily reduced low-speed parking precision.

Work capability22
#4 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The 2022 Model 3 was not officially tow-rated in the US market and has no bed or commercial-oriented cargo configuration — it is not fit for towing or hauling work duty.

Durability for work duty30
#8 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The EV drivetrain itself is mechanically simple and robust, but the Model 3 was never positioned or built for fleet/work abuse, and this generation had well-documented panel-fit and build-quality inconsistencies versus established work-oriented vehicles.

Jobsite & upfit practicality18
#3 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

No factory tie-downs, no bed, no standard hitch receiver, and no meaningful upfit ecosystem exist for the Model 3 — it offers essentially no jobsite-oriented provisions.

Long-distance comfort & range68
#9 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The volume RWD trim's EPA-rated 272-mile range is shorter than many Long Range/Performance rivals' figures, but Tesla's mature Supercharger network and standard Autopilot meaningfully offset range anxiety and driver fatigue on long hauls, even if seat comfort over many hours is only average.

Outdoor & adventure capability25
#9 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The volume trim is single-motor RWD with low ground clearance and no factory roof-rail or off-pavement provisions, and no US tow rating exists for carrying outdoor gear or trailers — this is a pavement-bound commuter car, not an adventure vehicle.

Gear & luggage flexibility48
#5 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

A 60/40 split-folding rear seat plus the deep trunk and separate frunk provide decent everyday luggage flexibility, but the absence of roof rails or a factory hitch limits how much bulky outdoor gear the car can realistically carry.

9Driving ExperienceOne of the Model 3's strongest categories.2.88B-
Handling & agility80
#2 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

A low center of gravity from the floor-mounted battery pack gives the Model 3 flat, composed cornering that reviewers consistently rate at or near the top of the mid-size sedan class.

Steering feel65
#4 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Steering is accurate and quick with selectable weight modes, but multiple reviewers describe the feedback as somewhat numb/synthetic rather than genuinely communicative.

Braking confidence72
#5 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Early Model 3 braking-distance criticism was resolved via a 2018 OTA update, and by the 2022 model year braking performance and pedal feel (including smooth regen blending) are described as class-typical to above-average.

Powertrain smoothness & response92
#1 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Single-speed EV powertrain delivers instant, perfectly linear torque with none of the hesitation, shift shock, or hybrid-transition harshness that affects many rivals.

Drivetrain noise & vibration85
#1 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The electric motor is essentially silent under normal driving with only a faint whine under hard acceleration, and no vibration is transmitted through the controls — a clear advantage over any ICE rival in this calibration set.

Turning circle
38.8 ft curb-to-curb (all trims)
20/100
#7 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Turning circle is identical across all three 2022 trims and is wider than some direct compact/mid-size sedan rivals, a minor tradeoff of the Model 3's underlying platform geometry.

Driving position & ergonomics58
#10 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Seating position and visibility are generally good, but Tesla's minimalist control philosophy pushes most functions (mirrors, wipers, vents in later revisions) into the touchscreen, which some reviewers find less ergonomic than physical controls for frequent adjustments.

Fun-to-drive factor76
#1 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Quick acceleration, sharp handling, and instant torque make the Model 3 engaging to drive, with enthusiast press frequently recommending it on driving merits alone beyond its EV credentials — strongest in Performance trim but present even in the base RWD configuration.

10Value & Market PositionGrades above the middle of the scale.2.81B-
Standard equipment generosity76
#2 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The 2022 RWD at ~$46,990 included a 15" center touchscreen, panoramic glass roof, heated front seats, keyless entry, and standard Autopilot (lane-keeping and traffic-aware cruise) at no charge — a genuine edge over rivals that charged extra for basic driver assistance at the time. Long Range added a bigger battery, heated rear seats and premium audio. The two persistent holes are the same ones the nameplate has carried throughout its life: no Apple CarPlay/Android Auto at any price, and Full Self-Driving priced as a steep standalone option (roughly $12,000 for most of 2022, rising to $15,000 by September).

Feature value per dollar81
#2 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

In 2022 the Model 3 still had few direct rivals that matched it on all three axes of range, efficiency, and performance per dollar — the Long Range's 358-mile EPA rating and the RWD's 272-mile rating at $46,990 beat or matched the contemporary Ioniq 5, Polestar 2, and EV6 on range-per-dollar, and exclusive access to the much larger and more reliable Supercharger network (NACS was still Tesla-only in 2022) was a real, uncaptured-by-spec-sheet advantage. The mid-year price increases are the main drag versus a theoretical best score.

Trim & configuration breadth60
#6 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Three trims — RWD, Long Range AWD, Performance — spanning roughly $47k to $63k by late 2022, with clear range, drivetrain and power separation. Configuration flexibility was minimal: a handful of paint colors, one wheel choice per trim, two interior colors, and the FSD option — no equipment packages or à-la-carte options, the same take-it-or-leave-it approach the lineup has kept throughout its life.

Sales popularity & market acceptance92
#1 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

2022 was a peak year for the Model 3's market position: roughly 195,700 units sold in the US made it not just the best-selling EV in the country but the best-selling luxury car of any kind, outselling the BMW 3 Series and Mercedes C-Class combined in their own segment. This is the strongest showing this nameplate has had in any model year scored.

Brand desirability & image83
#3 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Through most of 2022 Tesla's brand remained highly aspirational — long order waitlists across the lineup, strong owner loyalty, and a software/charging reputation no rival matched. The Twitter acquisition closed in October 2022 and began generating controversy late in the year, but the sharp, broad-based consumer-brand backlash that would hit consideration surveys and resale values is a 2023-onward phenomenon, not yet reflected in 2022 sales or sentiment data.

Deals & incentive availability22
#10 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

2022 was the worst year in the car's history for buyer-side deals: demand ran well ahead of supply all year, Tesla raised prices on every trim multiple times rather than discounting, wait times stretched months, and there was no federal tax credit available on any Tesla (the original $7,500 credit had fully phased out by 2020, and the Inflation Reduction Act's replacement credit did not take effect until January 1, 2023). No-haggle fixed pricing meant no dealer markup, but also nothing to negotiate — buyers paid full, rising sticker price with no incentive of any kind.

Model freshness55
#5 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

2022 sits squarely mid-cycle in the original 2017 generation, five model years in and roughly 18 months before the January 2024 Highland refresh. The car kept improving incrementally through 2022 — the yoke steering wheel became orderable, some Austin-built Long Range units began receiving structural 4680-cell packs, and radar/ultrasonic park-assist hardware was phased out in favor of Tesla Vision during the year — but there was no exterior or interior redesign, and the platform itself was approaching its sixth year without one.

Critical reception & awards77
#1 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The 2022 Model 3 continued to win on the measurable axes reviewers care about — range, efficiency, straight-line performance, and Supercharger access — and held an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ rating and a Consumer Reports recommendation for the model year. It remained a frequent comparison-test podium finisher against the Ioniq 5, Polestar 2 and EV6 rather than a hands-down winner, with persistent criticism of touchscreen-dependent controls, panel-gap and build-quality inconsistency, and the lack of CarPlay/Android Auto.
