The verdict
A struggling compact sedan, strong on reliability and held back by performance.
The 2017 Corolla is a low-stress used sedan: it's very reliable, cheap to run and keeps its value. Every trim comes with automatic emergency braking and radar cruise control, and the back seat has 41.4 inches of legroom, which is mid-size room. In return you get one of the slowest cars in its class (132 hp, 9.5 s to 60 mph), a 6.1-inch screen with no Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, no blind-spot monitor and a small 13 cu ft trunk. Buy it for dependability and low running costs, not for the drive or the tech.

The volume LE uses the 132-hp 2ZR-FE 1.8-liter four; only the LE Eco gets the 140-hp Valvematic tune. Output is at the very bottom of the compact-sedan field.
128 lb-ft arriving high in the rev range is near the floor for the segment.
Car and Driver's instrumented run of the refreshed 2017 Corolla with the 1.8L/CVT came in at 9.5 s, one of the slowest results in the compact class.
The aging 1.8L is smooth at idle and cruising but becomes buzzy and strained under hard acceleration, with little midrange urge; reviewers consistently called it slow and coarse when pushed.
The CVTi-S simulates stepped shifts under hard throttle, which reduces rubber-band feel versus older CVTs, but still drones on climbs and merges; a 6-speed manual remained on the SE only.
The 2017 Corolla sedan was front-wheel drive only on every trim; AWD did not reach the Corolla line in the US until the Corolla Cross/hybrid era.
One 1.8L engine in two tunes (132/140 hp), CVT or SE-only manual; no hybrid, turbo or electrified option in the 2017 US sedan (the Corolla Hybrid arrived for 2020).
2Efficiency & RangeGrades below the middle of the scale.1.56D
The volume LE with the CVT is EPA-rated 32 MPG combined, mid-pack for a 2017 gas compact; the LE Eco reaches 34.
28 MPG city for the volume CVT configuration.
36 MPG highway for the volume CVT configuration.
A small 13.2-gallon tank limits range to about 420 miles despite decent economy.
EPA's annual fuel cost estimate for the volume configuration on regular fuel.
Every 2017 Corolla configuration runs on regular unleaded with no premium recommendation.
3SafetyMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.42C+
The 2017 Corolla sedan carries NHTSA's top five-star overall rating for frontal, side and rollover results.
Good in driver small overlap, moderate overlap, side, roof strength and head restraints, and earned a 2017 Top Safety Pick+; passenger-side small overlap was not yet tested for this generation, keeping it short of the very top.
Toyota Safety Sense-P (AEB with pedestrian detection, lane departure alert with steering assist, auto high beams, radar cruise) became standard on every 2017 trim — unusual breadth for a 2017 compact — but blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert were not offered at all.
IIHS vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention rated Superior, avoiding collisions at 12 and 25 mph; pedestrian detection is daytime-only first-generation tech with no night or IIHS pedestrian rating for this year.
Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert were not available on any 2017 Corolla trim, leaving only mirrors and the backup camera.
Standard Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist gives a brief corrective nudge at the lane edge but offers no lane centering; reviewers describe it as a basic warning-led system.
Dynamic Radar Cruise Control is standard, which was rare in 2017 compacts, but it is a high-speed-only system without stop-and-go and has no highway-assist integration.
No hands-free driving capability was offered on the 2017 Corolla.
Every trim uses LED projector headlights with standard automatic high beams rated Acceptable by IIHS — consistent across the range, but none reach Good.
Conventional upright greenhouse gives decent forward and side sightlines, but rear-quarter blind spots draw owner complaints and there is no blind-spot monitor or 360 camera; a backup camera is standard.
IIHS rates LATCH Acceptable overall: two outboard positions with full hardware rated Good, the center seat tether-only; rear legroom is generous for the class, aiding rear-facing seats.
4Space & ComfortMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.30C+
Five-passenger seating on every 2017 Corolla sedan grade, the segment norm.
Average front headroom for a compact sedan; the moonroof on upper trims costs some.
Mid-pack front legroom for the class.
The upright E170 roofline leaves average rear headroom for a compact.
This generation's standout: 41.4 in of rear legroom is mid-size-sedan territory and well ahead of the 2020+ Corolla (34.8 in).
The trunk is below the compact-sedan average (Civic 15.1, Elantra 14.4); the 60/40 split-fold rear seat (LE and up) helps.
There is a conventional console bin, door pockets, cupholders and a small tray ahead of the shifter. Nothing is clever about the storage, and there is no power outlet beyond a 12V socket.
The front seats are acceptable but flat and lightly bolstered, with manual adjustment only on the LE. The rear bench benefits from generous legroom but has a flat cushion.
The soft, comfort-biased tuning (torsion-beam rear) on the LE's 15-16 in wheels soaks up most bumps well. It gets floaty and less settled over sharp or repeated impacts.
An acoustic windshield and added insulation help at a cruise, but the 1.8L/CVT drones under acceleration and road noise is noticeable on coarse pavement.
Automatic climate control is standard from the LE up, but heated front seats are limited to XLE/XSE. There is no heated wheel, ventilated seats, rear vents or remote start.
5Cost of OwnershipOne of the Corolla's strongest categories.3.35B+
The 2017 refresh year raised prices about 1.5% on average, but the entry L still opened at $18,500 before an $865 delivery charge, well below the floor of the sedan band.
The LE is the volume Corolla; at $18,935 plus $865 destination it lands at $19,800, and with common floor-mat/protection and convenience add-ons around $20,300 — far below the sedan band floor. Even the loaded XSE stayed under $24,000.
The port-injected 2ZR-FE 1.8L and CVT are among the cheapest, most widely serviced powertrains in the country, and ToyotaCare covers the first two years of scheduled service. Sources bracket a very low figure; this sits between CarEdge's model-level projection and RepairPal's annual average, in line with the 2017 Civic.
Corolla residuals are among the strongest of any mainstream car, and 2017 models reached their five-year mark in 2022, at the peak of the used-car shortage, which held values unusually high. It trails only the Civic among compact sedans in this dataset.
Standard Toyota basic coverage, at the bottom of the segment band — matching Honda and Mazda but two years short of Hyundai and Kia.
Toyota's 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain term is the segment band floor and half of Hyundai/Kia's 10-year/100,000-mile coverage. No hybrid-battery coverage applies — the 2017 US Corolla was gas-only.
ToyotaCare covered factory-scheduled maintenance for 2 years/25,000 miles plus 2 years of unlimited-mileage roadside assistance, coverage Honda and Mazda didn't offer at all on their compacts. There were no meaningful connected-service trials on the 2017 Corolla (no Safety Connect telematics on the volume trims), so it sits mid-band.
$20,300 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (67% retained, or about $13,601) leaves about $6,699 in depreciation. Add the projected $2,000 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $8,699 in total.
6Reliability & QualityThe Corolla's best-graded category.3.69A-
The 2017 Corolla is the fourth model year of the E170 eleventh generation (2014–2019), a mature, mid-cycle refreshed car with years of owner data behind it, and that data is consistently above average. Consumer Reports rates it more reliable than other cars of its model year, J.D. Power gives it an 87/100 Quality & Reliability score, and in J.D. Power's 2020 Vehicle Dependability Study (three-year owners of 2017 vehicles) it placed third in the Compact Car segment behind the Nissan Leaf and Chevrolet Cruze. Strong across sources, but not a segment winner, so it sits in the upper part of the top band rather than at the very top.
Toyota spent the late 2010s — the window that matters for a 2017 car — consistently near the top of Consumer Reports' brand reliability rankings alongside its own Lexus division, and comfortably better than the industry average in J.D. Power's Vehicle Dependability Studies, where Toyota Motor Corporation took six model-level awards in the 2017 VDS alone. That multi-year consistency is the definition of the top band; it stops short of perfect only because Toyota was not always the outright number one in any single survey.
Only three NHTSA campaigns cover the 2017 Corolla, and two are trivial — an under-inflated spare tire and an incorrect load-capacity label. The third is the serious one: the industry-wide ZF-TRW airbag control unit that can suffer electrical overstress and fail to deploy the airbags and seat-belt pretensioners in a crash, remedied with a noise filter. That is a genuine occupant-restraint defect, but it is supplier-wide rather than Corolla-specific, and there is no powertrain or fire campaign and no systemic TSB pattern, so it lands in the upper half of the typical band.
The volume LE uses the 1.8L 2ZR-FE naturally aspirated port-injected four, in Toyota service since 2007 and one of the most proven high-mileage small engines on the road, with no turbo or direct-injection-only fuelling to go wrong. It is paired with Toyota's CVTi-S continuously variable transmission; that CVT carries a shorter record than the engine and draws occasional owner complaints, but has no systemic failure pattern on this car (the base L trim instead keeps a conventional 4-speed automatic). A proven engine with one moderately newer component keeps it high in the top band.
The 2017 refresh was a real step up for this cabin: a new dash surfaced in soft-touch plastic with molded-in stitching, pinstriped accents, and more soft materials than the pre-refresh car, which reviewers singled out as making the interior feel more upscale. It is still built to a price, though — scratchy seat cloth on lower trims and hard plastics lower down — and it trails the materials of the then-new 2016 Civic and the Mazda3, so it sits mid-band rather than at the top.
By its fourth model year the E170 was a fully sorted car on a long-running US production line (Blue Springs, Mississippi, plus Cambridge, Ontario), and assembly is consistent with no pattern of panel-gap, water-leak or body-alignment complaints. Owner complaints are scattered and minor — the occasional dash or trim rattle — and the strong dependability results imply few build defects. Solid, not class-defining, so it sits at the top of the middle band.
Toyota has one of the two or three densest dealer networks in the US, so service for a used Corolla is reachable essentially anywhere, including small markets where import rivals thin out. Service satisfaction is good rather than best-in-class in J.D. Power's Customer Service Index, which keeps it just short of the very top.
As the best-selling nameplate in automotive history, the Corolla has cheap, abundant OEM and aftermarket parts, and the 2ZR-FE drivetrain shared across many Toyota models is familiar to every independent shop. RepairPal puts the Corolla's annual repair and maintenance cost well below both the compact-car and all-vehicle averages — about as good as it gets.
7Technology & InfotainmentOne of the Corolla's weakest categories.0.00F
The volume LE has the 6.1-inch Entune Audio screen, below the bottom of the band; the 7-inch unit was reserved for upper grades.
The Entune interface is simple but dated, with small icons and sluggish responses. It has physical volume/tune knobs but no phone projection to fall back on.
Neither Apple CarPlay nor Android Auto was offered on any 2017 Corolla, wired or wireless.
The LE has basic Bluetooth voice commands and no navigation. App-based Scout GPS Link or integrated Entune Premium navigation was available only on upper grades.
There is a basic six-speaker system on the volume trim, and no branded premium audio was offered on the 2017 Corolla sedan.
The gauges are analog with a small multi-information display: a monochrome 3.5-in TFT on the L and a color 4.2-in TFT on upper grades. There is no digital cluster.
There is no over-the-air capability; the 2017 Corolla has no embedded modem, and head-unit updates require a dealer or USB.
There is no remote start, remote lock or vehicle-locate app. Entune apps only extend phone apps to the head unit on Premium Audio grades.
There is a single front USB-A media port plus a 12V outlet, with no USB-C and no rear ports. Qi wireless charging came only with Entune Premium packages on upper grades.
The volume LE uses a conventional key with remote keyless entry. Smart Key with push-button start is limited to XLE/XSE/50th Anniversary, and remote start and phone-as-key are not offered.
A backup camera with projected path lines became standard on all 2017 grades. There are no parking sensors, surround view or blind-spot monitor.
No head-up display was offered on any 2017 Corolla.
8Use-Case FitOne of the Corolla's weakest categories.1.55D
41.4 in of rear legroom lets rear-facing seats fit without shoving the front seats forward, a real edge over rival compacts. Weak points are the smallish 13.0 cu ft trunk for strollers and sedan-sized door openings.
TSS-P is standard on every trim including the base L, rare in 2017: AEB with pedestrian detection, lane departure alert with steering assist and radar cruise. There is no blind-spot monitor, rear cross-traffic alert or rear-occupant alert.
Rear-seat room is generous, but there are no rear vents, no rear USB and few rear amenities. The smallish trunk limits luggage with four aboard.
Light controls, a soft ride, good visibility and standard radar cruise make it an easy, low-stress commuter. The weak, droning powertrain makes merging and passing effortful.
About 32 MPG combined (LE Eco about 34) on regular fuel, plus Toyota's cheap consumables and maintenance, makes it a very cheap commuter.
A compact roughly 183-in footprint, a 35.6-ft turning circle and good outward visibility make it easy to park. The only aid is the standard backup camera; there are no sensors.
It is a compact sedan with no published US tow rating and a small trunk, so it is not a work tool.
The proven 2ZR-FE 1.8L and simple chassis have a strong fleet, rental and rideshare durability record, though the lightweight interior isn't built for abuse.
There is no onboard power beyond a 12V socket, no tie-downs and essentially no upfit ecosystem.
A soft ride and standard radar cruise help on the highway, and the 13.2-gal tank gives about 420 miles of range. Engine drone, average noise and flat seats limit long-haul comfort.
It is front-wheel drive only with low ground clearance, no tow rating and no roof rails. It is fine on graded gravel and little more.
The 13.0 cu ft trunk is helped by a 60/40 split-folding rear seat on LE and up. The sedan opening and lack of roof rails or a hitch make bulky gear a squeeze.
9Driving ExperienceGrades below the middle of the scale.1.66D
Handling is secure and predictable, but the soft suspension and torsion-beam rear allow plenty of body roll, and the LE's economy tires give modest grip. It is clearly behind the Mazda3, Civic and Focus.
The electric power steering is light and accurate enough around town but essentially numb, with a vague on-center feel at highway speed.
Stopping power is adequate, but the LE uses rear drum brakes (four-wheel discs on SE/XSE), and the pedal is soft and progressive rather than confidence-inspiring.
The 132-hp 1.8L and CVTi-S are smooth at a cruise, but tip-in is soft and acceleration slow (9.5 s 0-60). The CVT flares under load despite its simulated steps.
The engine is quiet at idle and cruise but turns buzzy and droning when worked hard, which the CVT makes it do often.
A tight turning circle for the class on the volume LE.
Visibility is good and the controls are logically laid out, with physical climate controls (redesigned for 2017). The LE's manual seat has limited adjustment.
It is a dependable appliance; the SE's manual and sport styling do little to change a slow, numb driving experience.
10Value & Market PositionOne of the Corolla's strongest categories.2.76B-
For 2017 every Corolla, including the $19,365 L, got Toyota Safety Sense-P as standard: automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane departure alert with steering assist, full-range radar cruise control and auto high beams. It also got LED headlights and a backup camera. Rival compacts charged thousands more for those features or didn't offer them at all. Comfort content is thinner: no Apple CarPlay/Android Auto on any trim, a 6.1-inch screen on L/LE, and no blind-spot monitor.
A sub-$20K delivered LE with standard active safety, very low running costs and top-tier resale is solid value. The money buys little performance, though: 132 hp and a 9.5-second 0–60 time trail the Civic's 158-hp base engine and available turbo at similar prices. The rear seat and trunk are average, and rivals' infotainment was more modern.
Seven sedan trims (L, LE, LE Eco, SE, XLE, XSE and the limited 50th Anniversary Edition) cover roughly $19,400 to $23,500 delivered, and the SE still offered a 6-speed manual. Under that spread there is one 1.8L engine in two tunes, FWD only, no hybrid and no performance variant, so the choice is mostly about trim and equipment.
With 329,196 US sales in 2017 the Corolla was one of the highest-volume cars in America and the second-best-selling compact. However, it fell 7.6% year over year and finished well behind the Honda Civic's 377,286 as the sedan segment began its long slide.
Toyota's dependability reputation and the Corolla's status as the best-selling nameplate in history make it the default safe choice, and that shows in its resale. But in 2017 it was respected rather than desired. The nameplate was widely seen as a dull appliance, with none of the enthusiast pull the Civic got from its Si and Type R.
2017 was a buyer's market for compact sedans. Toyota routinely ran low-APR financing (0–1.9% for 60 months) and customer cash or lease subsidies on the Corolla as segment demand softened and the generation aged. Transactions below invoice were common, without fire-sale pricing.
2017 was the mid-cycle refresh of the E170 generation that launched for MY2014. It brought new front and rear styling, interior upgrades and standard TSS-P. The underlying platform, 1.8L engine and infotainment were aging, though, and an all-new TNGA-based generation was already in development (it arrived for the US sedan with MY2020).
It earned a 2017 IIHS Top Safety Pick+ and was praised for its standard safety tech, ride comfort and reliability. In comparison tests, though, reviewers ranked it below the Civic, Mazda3 and Elantra for performance, handling and interior design, and it won no 10Best or NACTOY honors that year.
