The verdict

A struggling compact sedan, strong on reliability and held back by performance.

The 2021 Corolla is about as safe a bet as a used compact sedan gets. It has top-tier predicted reliability, 5-star NHTSA crash results, 33 MPG combined from the volume LE (52 MPG from the Hybrid LE), and an estimated five-year ownership cost of about $12,400. The trade-offs are real, though. The LE's 139-hp 1.8L takes nearly 10 seconds to reach 60 mph, the back seat (34.8 in of legroom) and trunk (13.1 cu ft) are among the smallest in the class, and the tech is a generation behind, with an 8-inch screen and wired-only phone projection. Buy it for low-stress, low-cost transportation, not for space or excitement.

Detailed scoring by subject

1Performance & PowertrainThe Corolla's lowest-graded category.0.00F
Horsepower
139 hp (1.8L gas — L, LE, XLE); 169 hp 2.0L (SE, XSE, Apex); 121 hp net (1.8L Hybrid LE)
2/100
#12 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

2021 sits in the 12th (E210) generation before the 2023 change that standardized the 2.0L, so the volume LE still uses the 139-hp 2ZR-FAE 1.8L four. That is almost at the floor of the 130–520 hp sedan band; the 169-hp 2.0L is reserved for the SE/XSE/Apex grades and the hybrid nets just 121 hp.

Torque
126 lb-ft (1.8L gas); 151 lb-ft 2.0L (SE/XSE); Hybrid 105 lb-ft engine
2/100
#12 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

The naturally aspirated 1.8L peaks at 126 lb-ft at a high 3,900 rpm, barely above the 120 lb-ft floor of the sedan band. No turbocharged Corolla sedan was offered in 2021; the 2.0L's 151 lb-ft is the lineup maximum.

0–60 mph time
≈9.9 s (1.8L LE CVT); ≈8.3–8.8 s 2.0L SE/XSE
0/100
#11 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Toyota publishes no 0–60 claim. Independent timings of the 1.8L/CVT LE cluster around 9.9–10.0 s, slower than the 9.5 s ceiling of the sedan band, so it scores at the floor. The 2.0L SE/XSE is roughly a second-plus quicker.

Powertrain refinement48
#13 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

The 1.8L is smooth and predictable at part throttle with no turbo lag, but its 139 hp has to be worked hard for merges and passing, where reviewers describe it as loud, buzzy and strained. Slightly below the 2.0L-equipped later cars, which were less taxed.

Transmission behavior52
#13 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

The 1.8L LE uses a conventional CVT that is smooth and never hunts in normal driving but drones and holds high revs under heavy throttle, accentuating the weak engine. The 2.0L grades get the better Direct Shift-CVT with a physical launch gear and 10-speed simulated mode, and the SE offered a 6-speed manual (with rev-matching) — options the volume trim lacks.

AWD/4WD availability5
#12 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Every 2021 Corolla sedan — gas or hybrid — is front-wheel drive only. AWD did not arrive until the 2023 Corolla Hybrid AWD, so 2021 offers no all-weather drivetrain at all.

Powertrain lineup breadth62
#2 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Three distinct powertrains — the 139-hp 1.8L, the 169-hp 2.0L (CVT or 6-speed manual), and the 121-hp 1.8L hybrid — cover mainstream needs and include an electrified choice, but the hybrid came only as a single FWD LE grade and there is no turbo, PHEV or EV variant.

2Efficiency & RangeMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.87C-
Combined fuel economy
33 MPG combined (1.8L LE CVT); 34 2.0L SE/XSE CVT, 32 2.0L 6MT, 52 Hybrid LE
63/100
#5 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

The volume LE's 1.8L/CVT returns 33 MPG combined — 2 MPG below the 2.0L LE that replaced it for 2023, and mid-pack for a 2021 compact sedan. The single Hybrid LE grade's 52 MPG is class-leading but not the representative trim.

City fuel economy
30 MPG city (1.8L LE); 31 2.0L CVT, 29 2.0L 6MT, 53 Hybrid LE
64/100
#5 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

30 MPG city reflects a naturally aspirated four with no stop-start; the 23-MPG gap to the Hybrid LE is the strongest case for the hybrid in 2021.

Highway fuel economy
38 MPG highway (1.8L LE); 40 2.0L CVT, 36 2.0L 6MT, 52 Hybrid LE
67/100
#8 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

38 MPG highway is competitive but trails the 2.0L Direct Shift-CVT's 40 MPG, whose launch gear lets it run taller ratios at cruise.

Driving range
436 mi (1.8L LE, 13.2-gal tank × 33 MPG); 449 mi 2.0L CVT, 588 mi Hybrid LE (11.3 gal × 52)
39/100
#5 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

A 13.2-gallon tank at 33 MPG combined gives about 436 miles — adequate but below the middle of the sedan band. The hybrid stretches a smaller tank to nearly 590 miles.

Estimated annual fuel cost
$2,050/yr (1.8L LE, EPA 15k mi/yr, regular); $1,950 2.0L CVT, $2,100 2.0L 6MT, $1,300 Hybrid LE
52/100
#8 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

EPA's current-price estimate for the 1.8L LE is $2,050/yr, mid-band for a sedan; the Hybrid LE saves about $750/yr. Note EPA reprices these with current fuel prices, so the figure is not directly comparable to annual-cost figures recorded on older scorecards under a different price basis.

Fuel requirements90
#5 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Every 2021 Corolla sedan configuration runs on 87-octane regular with no premium recommendation and no charging needs — as cheap and simple to fuel as a new car gets.

3SafetyMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.63C+
NHTSA overall rating
5 stars overall (5 frontal driver / 5 frontal passenger, 5 side barrier, 5 side pole, 4 rollover with 10.5% risk)
100/100
#1 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

NHTSA gave the 2021 Corolla sedan the maximum 5-star overall rating with five stars in every crash test — frontal driver and passenger, side barrier front and rear, and side pole. The four-star rollover result (10.5% risk, no tip) is the normal ceiling for a front-drive compact sedan.

IIHS awards & crashworthiness70
#7 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

The 2021 Corolla sedan is an IIHS Top Safety Pick (not TSP+), with Good ratings in both small overlap tests, the moderate overlap test, the original side test, roof strength and head restraints. The award is qualified: it applies only to cars with the specific Advanced Lighting headlights, so the volume LE, with Marginal headlights, does not qualify. The later updated side test, run on a 2022 LE and applying to 2019–26 models, comes back Acceptable with a Marginal driver pelvis. Strong crash results with an award that most cars sold don't actually qualify for put it near the top of the middle band.

Standard ADAS suite breadth66
#9 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard on every 2021 Corolla grade from the base L up. It includes Pre-Collision with Pedestrian Detection (low-light pedestrian and daytime cyclist), Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (full-speed range with the CVT), Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist, Lane Tracing Assist, Automatic High Beams and Road Sign Assist. New for 2021, two more airbags bring the total to ten. The gap is blind-spot coverage: Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert is standard only on the XLE and XSE and optional on the volume LE and SE. That is a core suite with a key item optional on the volume grades.

Automatic emergency braking performance80
#4 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

The standard TSS 2.0 Pre-Collision System earns Superior in IIHS vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention, avoiding collisions at both 12 and 25 mph, and Superior in the daytime pedestrian evaluation, avoiding the crossing child and crossing adult and cutting impact speed sharply in the parallel-adult test. It stops at the bottom of the top band because no nighttime pedestrian rating exists for this model year, and the parallel-adult scenario was mitigated, not avoided.

Blind-spot & cross-traffic coverage55
#8 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert is alert-only (mirror lights and a chime, with no steering or braking intervention, no rear auto-brake and no safe-exit alert). It is standard on the XLE and XSE but optional on the volume LE and SE grades. No surround-view camera is offered. Available on part of the range and alert-only puts it in the lower half of the middle band.

Lane keeping & centering62
#4 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Every 2021 Corolla gets Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist and Lane Tracing Assist as part of standard TSS 2.0. Lane Tracing Assist centers the car only while radar cruise is engaged and lane lines are clear. Reviewers found the TSS 2.0 calibration functional but prone to wandering and late, abrupt corrections, and it hands back control on faded markings and tight curves. It works but is not something to lean on, which puts it lower than the TSS 3.0 cars from 2023 onward.

Adaptive cruise & highway assist68
#6 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Dynamic Radar Cruise Control is standard on every grade, and on CVT cars (the volume configuration) it is full-speed range with stop capability. That is generous for the price, and paired with Lane Tracing Assist it makes a basic highway-assist package. The TSS 2.0 tuning is conservative, with large gaps, slow resume after cut-ins and abrupt braking when it misreads traffic. Manual-transmission SE/XSE cars get the non-full-speed version, and there is no lane-change assist or speed adjustment linked to navigation.

Hands-free driving availability5
#2 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

No hands-free highway driving is offered on the 2021 Corolla at any grade. Lane Tracing Assist is a hands-on aid that warns and disengages if the driver lets go of the wheel, and Toyota offered nothing like BlueCruise or Super Cruise on the Corolla.

Headlight performance38
#6 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

This is the 2021 Corolla's weak spot. The standard LED projectors fitted to the L, LE and SE (the volume grades) and to XLE/XSE without the package are rated Marginal: low-beam visibility is inadequate on the right side of the straightaway, though glare stays within limits and high-beam assist is standard. Only the curve-adaptive Advanced Lighting package on XLE/XSE reaches Acceptable, and no configuration earns Good. Marginal headlights on most cars sold puts it in the low band.

Outward visibility64
#6 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

The E210 Corolla's low cowl and slim A-pillars give good forward and three-quarter sightlines, and the compact footprint is easy to place. The shallow rear window and thick C-pillars create rear-quarter blind zones, though. No surround-view camera is offered, only a backup camera is standard, and blind-spot monitoring is optional on the volume grades. Average visibility with some blind zones.

Child-seat (LATCH) usability72
#4 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

IIHS rates the Corolla's LATCH hardware Good+, with two full LATCH positions plus a center seat that has a tether and can borrow lower anchors. The anchors are easy to reach and attach. What holds it back is packaging: about 34.8 inches of rear legroom makes rear-facing seats tight behind tall front occupants, and three across is impractical.

4Space & ComfortMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.83C-
Seating capacity
5 seats (2+3) on every 2021 Corolla sedan grade — L, LE, SE, XLE, XSE, Apex Edition and Hybrid LE
100/100
#1 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Every 2021 Corolla sedan seats five, the maximum a compact sedan offers, so the item tops out.

Front headroom
38.3 in front headroom (less with the moonroof fitted to XLE/XSE)
57/100
#11 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

38.3 inches up front is above the sedan-band midpoint and tall drivers fit well; the power moonroof on XLE/XSE trims costs some of that clearance.

Front legroom
42.0 in front legroom (all 2021 sedan grades)
50/100
#11 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

42.0 inches of front legroom is mid-pack for the compact-sedan class — enough for tall front occupants, no more generous than the Civic or Elantra.

Rear headroom
37.1 in second-row headroom
53/100
#11 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

37.1 inches is average on paper, but the low, sloping E210 roofline makes the back seat feel tighter and complicates entry; AutoTrader.ca's 2021 review notes rear headroom trails some rivals.

Rear legroom
34.8 in second-row legroom — among the tightest in the compact-sedan class
28/100
#9 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

34.8 inches is the 2021 Corolla's biggest space liability; the 2021 Civic (37.4) and Elantra (38.0) give rear passengers meaningfully more room, and reviewers note the redesign shrank the back seat.

Cargo/trunk volume
13.1 cu ft trunk — same on gas and Hybrid LE (battery under the rear seat)
31/100
#13 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

13.1 cubic feet is below the compact-sedan norm (2021 Civic 14.8, Elantra 14.2, Jetta 14.1); the hybrid costs no trunk space because its battery sits under the rear seat.

In-cabin storage & clever solutions55
#6 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Basics only: a center console bin, front and rear cupholders, door pockets and a 60/40 folding rear seatback from the LE up. Nothing clever — no underfloor bin or onboard power — and Qi wireless charging is confined to the XLE/XSE, with a small console that owners routinely fit organizers to.

Seat comfort62
#7 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

The front seats get good marks for contouring and long-distance comfort, but the volume LE uses a 6-way manual driver's seat with no lumbar adjustment (8-way power is XLE/XSE only), and the rear bench is cramped over distance at 34.8 in of legroom.

Ride quality75
#2 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

The TNGA-C chassis with multi-link rear suspension rides smoothly — reviewers say it glides over most surfaces — and the volume LE's 16-inch wheels are the comfortable choice. The 18-inch SE/XSE ride firmer and the new-for-2021 Apex Edition, lowered with 47%/33% more roll stiffness, is the harshest version.

Cabin quietness52
#9 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Reviews split: AutoTrader.ca found minimal noise at cruise, but Edmunds calls road noise omnipresent and one of the car's biggest drawbacks, and the 139-hp 1.8L turns loud when worked hard through its CVT. Average at best for the class.

Climate & comfort features52
#6 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Automatic climate control is standard from the LE up, but heated front seats arrive only on the XLE, XSE and XSE Apex, there are no ventilated seats, no heated steering wheel and no rear vents or rear climate zone on any 2021 grade.

5Cost of OwnershipOne of the Corolla's strongest categories.3.15B
Base MSRP
$20,920 (L sedan, $19,925 + $995 destination at launch; rose to ~$21,020 mid-year)
100/100
#1 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

2021 is a carry-over year in the 12th (E210) generation, which launched for the 2020 sedan. The entry L with the 139-hp 1.8L and CVT opens at about $20,920 delivered, below the floor of the sedan band.

Volume-Trim Price
~$21,800 (LE gas as typically equipped, incl. $995 destination); SE $23,370 · Nightshade $24,070 · XLE $25,320 · Apex SE $26,065 · XSE $26,820 · Apex XSE $29,205
100/100
#1 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

The LE 1.8L CVT sedan is the volume seller, and a typically equipped example with common accessory and all-weather packages lands around $21,800 delivered, below the floor of the sedan band. The whole non-Apex ladder stays under $27,000.

5-Year Maintenance & Repair Cost
~$3,700 over 5 years (maintenance + repairs, net of ToyotaCare 2 yr / 25,000 mi)
82/100
#5 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

The 2ZR-FAE 1.8L and its CVT are long-running, high-volume parts with cheap, widely stocked consumables. ToyotaCare covers the first two years of scheduled service, and the 2021 projections start from a lower cost baseline than the 2023-and-later cars. That makes it one of the cheapest compact sedans to maintain.

5-Year Resale Value Retention
~60% of MSRP retained after 5 yr
83/100
#8 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

The Corolla is known for shallow depreciation, and the 2021–2023 used-car price spike pushed values for cars of this vintage higher still. It trails only the Civic among mainstream compact sedans.

Basic warranty
3 yr / 36,000 mi bumper-to-bumper
0/100
#4 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

This is Toyota's standard basic coverage. It sits at the floor of the band, matching Honda and Mazda but two years short of Hyundai and Kia.

Powertrain warranty
5 yr / 60,000 mi powertrain (Hybrid: battery 10 yr / 150,000 mi)
0/100
#4 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

The scored gas car gets the segment-floor 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain term, half of Hyundai and Kia's 10-year/100,000-mile coverage. The long hybrid-battery term does not apply to the gas volume trim.

Complimentary maintenance & perks62
#5 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

ToyotaCare includes 2 years/25,000 miles of scheduled maintenance and 2 years of unlimited-mileage roadside assistance. Honda and Mazda offer nothing comparable on compact sedans, but Hyundai's 3-year/36,000-mile plan runs longer, and connected-service trials are time-limited.

Effective 5-Year Ownership Cost
$12,420 (≈$8,720 depreciation + $3,700 maintenance)
95/100
#4 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

$21,800 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (60% retained, or about $13,080) leaves about $8,720 in depreciation. Add the projected $3,700 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $12,420 in total.

6Reliability & QualityThe Corolla's best-graded category.3.71A
Predicted reliability91
#1 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

The 2021 Corolla sedan is the second US model year of the twelfth-generation (E210) sedan, which arrived for MY2020, so it is an early carry-over year with years of owner data behind it now. Both major sources put it at the top: Consumer Reports rates the 2021 Corolla much more reliable than other cars of its model year, and the Corolla took a model-level segment award in J.D. Power's 2024 VDS, which surveyed 2021 model-year owners at three years. CR's owner reports for the volume LE 1.8L still flag minor trouble spots (hood-sensor electrical faults, premature brake wear, some A/C complaints), which keeps it off the ceiling.

Brand reliability track record90
#1 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Toyota is consistently at or near the top of Consumer Reports' brand reliability rankings and well ahead of the industry average in J.D. Power's dependability studies across the years that matter for a 2021 car. In J.D. Power's PP100 ranking it sometimes trails a handful of low-volume or luxury marques rather than ranking top-five outright, which keeps it just short of the ceiling.

Recall & TSB history76
#4 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

The recall record for the 2021 sedan is light in count: one NHTSA campaign. That campaign is not trivial, though. 23V-865 covers an Occupant Classification System sensor that can short and stop the front passenger airbag from deploying, and it is a broad Toyota-wide parts issue rather than anything specific to the Corolla. There are no powertrain, fire or structural recalls. One restraint-system recall keeps it out of the top band.

Powertrain durability reputation88
#2 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

For 2020–2022 the volume L/LE sedan kept the 1.8L 2ZR-family naturally aspirated four (139 hp) with a CVT. This engine family has been in Corollas since 2009 and has a long high-mileage record with no systemic failure mode. Only the SE/XSE moved to the newer 2.0L M20A Dynamic Force with the launch-gear Direct Shift-CVT. Toyota's CVTs have held up far better than most rivals' units of the same era. The score sits a little below the 2019 car's because the E210 sedan's CVT is a newer unit with a shorter record.

Interior material quality54
#13 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

The E210 cabin is cleaner and more modern than the E170's, with a floating touchscreen and a padded dash band. Reviewers still find hard plastics across the door panels and lower dash, and they put it behind the Mazda3 and the Honda Civic for richness. The materials are durable and well grained, so it stays in the 'competitive with expected hard plastics' band, but near the bottom of it.

Fit & finish72
#8 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Assembly is structurally consistent, with no pattern of panel-gap or body-assembly complaints, and the J.D. Power three-year result points to few problems overall. Interior rattles are a recurring owner complaint on the E210 generation, though, from the dash and the TSS camera shroud, and CR owners mention isolated water-leak and hood-sensor faults. That is solid with scattered complaints.

Dealer & service network88
#2 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Toyota's network of 1,200+ US dealers is one of the densest in the country, so service is reachable almost anywhere. Its service satisfaction is good but not class-leading in J.D. Power's CSI, where lower-volume brands often edge it out.

Parts availability & repair cost95
#1 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

This is close to the best case in the market. The Corolla is the best-selling nameplate in automotive history, the 1.8L engine family is shared across many Toyota models, and OEM and aftermarket parts are abundant and cheap. RepairPal puts annual repair and maintenance cost well below the compact-car average.

7Technology & InfotainmentOne of the Corolla's weakest categories.0.62F
Touchscreen size
8 in Entune 3.0 touchscreen on the volume LE (and all upper grades) — no larger screen offered for 2021
12/100
#3 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

The 2021 Corolla's dash-top 8-inch Entune 3.0 screen is the largest offered; it sits near the bottom of the sedan band.

Infotainment UX & responsiveness58
#6 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Entune 3.0 keeps hard buttons flanking the screen and a volume knob, which reviewers praise for logical ergonomics, but the graphics are dated, responses are slower than rival systems and the glossy screen washes out in sun — the problems the 2023 Toyota Audio Multimedia unit was built to fix.

Wireless CarPlay / Android Auto60
#2 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Wired Apple CarPlay and — new for 2021 — wired Android Auto are standard on every grade, but wireless projection is not offered on any 2021 Corolla (it arrived with the 2023 multimedia system).

Voice control & native navigation40
#11 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

No embedded navigation on the volume LE — maps come from the Scout GPS Link phone app relayed through the head unit, with Dynamic Navigation only on the upper Audio Plus systems — and Entune's command-based voice recognition is basic. Owners default to CarPlay/Android Auto.

Audio system quality54
#10 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Six speakers are standard and sound decent for the class; the JBL nine-speaker, 800-watt upgrade exists but is confined to XLE/XSE packages, so the volume LE buyer has no upgrade path.

Digital instrument cluster40
#10 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

The LE uses analog dials with a 4.2-inch multi-information display; the XLE/XSE step up to a 7-inch digital display within a part-analog cluster. No fully digital configurable gauge display is offered.

OTA update capability18
#8 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

The Entune 3.0 head unit in the 2021 Corolla has no meaningful over-the-air capability; software updates are dealer-performed. Toyota's first OTA-updatable Corolla head unit arrived for 2023.

Companion app & remote functions42
#10 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Remote Connect (remote start, lock/unlock, locate) via the Toyota app is tied to the Audio Plus system on upper grades with a trial then subscription; the volume LE gets Service Connect/Safety Connect basics only and no digital key.

Charging ports & device power42
#3 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Front-only USB-A ports — one media plus one charging on base cars, with the LE adding one more — no rear ports and no USB-C; Qi wireless charging is standard only on XLE/XSE, and there is no AC outlet.

Keyless & remote access40
#11 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

The volume LE ships with a conventional key and remote keyless entry; Smart Key with push-button start is standard on XLE/XSE and the Apex grades, and on the LE only via the new-for-2021 Convenience Package. No phone-as-key.

Camera & parking aids35
#12 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

A basic rear camera is standard; parking sensors are not a factory feature on the volume LE, no 360-degree camera is offered on any grade, and there is no automated parking.

Head-up display availability15
#4 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

No head-up display is offered on any 2021 Corolla sedan grade or package.

8Use-Case FitOne of the Corolla's weakest categories.1.54D
Kid & car-seat practicality57
#7 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

LATCH hardware is easy to use, but 34.8 in of rear legroom means a rear-facing seat crowds the front passenger, three car seats across will not fit, and the 13.1 cu ft trunk makes a stroller plus groceries a squeeze. Family duty with recurring compromises.

Family safety package68
#7 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard on every grade including the LE, 2021 adds rear side airbags for 10 in total, and the car earns NHTSA 5 stars overall plus an IIHS Top Safety Pick (with specific headlights). Blind-spot monitoring is an LE option, and the TSP applies only to the XLE/XSE headlights.

Family road-trip comfort55
#4 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Workable for four on medium trips: a tight 34.8 in rear seat under a sloping roof, no rear vents or rear USB ports on any 2021 grade, and a small trunk that forces folding a seatback for four people's luggage. Road noise is the frequent complaint.

Daily driving ease72
#6 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Light steering, a compact footprint, good forward visibility, a smooth ride and standard full-speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control on CVT cars make traffic easy. The volume LE's 139-hp 1.8L is the drag — it strains on merges with the CVT droning — and the LE ships with a conventional key.

Commuting cost efficiency84
#3 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Cheap to commute in: the gas LE returns 33 MPG combined (~$2,050/yr EPA) on regular fuel and the Hybrid LE 52 MPG (~$1,300/yr), with the class's lowest repair costs. Held below the 2023 car because the volume 1.8L gas trim is a little thirstier than rivals' best.

Parking & maneuverability72
#4 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

A 182.3-in footprint and tight 35.6-ft turning circle make it easy to place in town, but thick rear pillars pinch the rear view, parking sensors and a surround camera are not offered on the LE, and blind-spot monitoring is optional below XLE.

Work capability15
#7 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

No US tow rating, no bed, a 13.1 cu ft trunk and a 139-hp economy engine — not a work vehicle in any meaningful sense.

Durability for work duty55
#3 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

The 1.8L/CVT drivetrain is fleet- and rideshare-proven and cheap to keep running past 200,000 miles, but the car is a low passenger sedan with 5.1 in of ground clearance, cloth seats and a carpeted trunk — durable, not abuse-proof.

Jobsite & upfit practicality18
#5 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Work provisions amount to trunk hooks and the accessory removable roof crossbars. No AC outlet, two front USB-A ports, no hitch and no upfit ecosystem.

Long-distance comfort & range62
#5 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Range is solid (~436 mi gas LE, ~588 mi Hybrid) and standard TSS 2.0 with full-speed adaptive cruise and Lane Tracing Assist cuts fatigue, but road noise, no adjustable lumbar on the LE and a strained 1.8L when passing limit it as a tourer.

Outdoor & adventure capability30
#6 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Front-wheel drive only for 2021 (hybrid AWD arrived in 2023), 5.1 in of ground clearance, no tow rating and no terrain modes — pavement-bound, with accessory roof bars the only outdoor enabler.

Gear & luggage flexibility48
#8 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

A 60/40 folding rear seatback and accessory roof bars help, but the 13.1 cu ft trunk is among the class's smallest, the seatbacks don't fold flat, and there is no hatch, hitch or underfloor storage.

Handling & agility70
#7 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

The E210's TNGA-C platform and multi-link rear suspension give predictable, well-balanced handling, a big step over the previous generation, but the LE is tuned for comfort on economy tires. The new-for-2021 Apex Edition adds a lowered, stiffer suspension for those who want more.

Steering feel65
#7 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Accurate and nicely weighted for an economy sedan, but numb — little road feedback reaches the rim.

Braking confidence64
#8 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Progressive, predictable pedal in the gas LE with adequate stopping distances for a light compact; the Hybrid LE's regen-to-friction handoff is less natural.

Powertrain smoothness & response56
#9 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

The 1.8L/CVT is smooth and shudder-free at part throttle, but with 139 hp it needs deep throttle for merges, where the conventional CVT holds high revs and response feels rubbery; the 2.0L grades' Direct Shift-CVT with launch gear is the better unit.

Drivetrain noise & vibration52
#8 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Quiet at steady cruise with negligible vibration, but the 1.8L turns buzzy and the CVT drones under acceleration, layered on persistent road noise.

Turning circle
35.6 ft curb-to-curb (LE, 16-in wheels)
73/100
#8 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

35.6 ft is tight for a compact sedan, making U-turns and parking structures easy.

Driving position & ergonomics72
#3 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Good forward sightlines from thin A-pillars and a low cowl, a manual height adjuster and tilt/telescoping wheel, and hard buttons around the screen plus physical climate controls. Deductions for the low hip point, thick rear pillars and the LE's 6-way manual seat without lumbar.

Fun-to-drive factor52
#9 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

A competent chassis wasted on the volume LE's slow 1.8L/CVT — pleasant but appliance-like. The 2.0L SE with its 6-speed manual and the new Apex Edition are the enjoyable versions, not the representative trim.

10Value & Market PositionOne of the Corolla's strongest categories.2.82B-
Standard equipment generosity72
#5 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Every 2021 Corolla includes Toyota Safety Sense 2.0: automatic emergency braking with pedestrian and daytime-cyclist detection, adaptive cruise, lane tracing and auto high beams. Standard equipment also covers LED headlights and a touchscreen with Apple CarPlay. New for 2021 are Android Auto and rear side airbags, bringing the total to 10 airbags. Weak spots are the base 139-hp engine and blind-spot monitoring, which is optional below the XLE.

Feature value per dollar72
#7 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

A low price, standard driver assists, cheap running costs and strong residuals make this a sound buy. Against that, the volume 1.8L is slow, the Civic and Mazda3 give more refinement and performance for similar money, and getting the 2.0L means stepping up to the SE.

Trim & configuration breadth80
#3 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

The 2021 sedan range is wide. The economy side has L, LE, XLE and Hybrid LE, and the 2.0L powers the SE, Nightshade, XSE and the limited-run Apex SE/XSE. A 6-speed manual was available on the SE and Apex SE. Delivered prices span roughly $21k to $29k, and AWD is not offered.

Sales popularity & market acceptance88
#1 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

The Corolla line sold about 249,000 units in the US in 2021, ranking second among compact cars behind the Honda Civic, even as the chip shortage limited supply in the second half of the year. Corolla also passed 50 million global sales in 2021.

Brand desirability & image80
#4 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Among mainstream US brands, Toyota has the strongest reputation for dependability and resale, which supports owner satisfaction and residual values. The Corolla's image is sensible rather than aspirational.

Deals & incentive availability48
#12 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Low-APR financing and modest cash offers were available early in the 2021 model year. From mid-2021 the semiconductor shortage drained inventory, incentives largely disappeared and dealer markups became common. Across the whole model year, deals were occasional and modest.

Model freshness66
#5 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

2021 is the second US model year of the E210 sedan, which launched for 2020 on the TNGA-C platform. The platform is current, but this is a carry-over year with minor updates. The 2023 mid-cycle refresh retired the 1.8L and brought a new multimedia system.

Critical reception & awards66
#6 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Reviewers recommend the 2021 Corolla for safety, economy and dependability, and it earned an IIHS Top Safety Pick. Comparison tests usually rank the Civic and Mazda3 ahead on driving and refinement, so the Corolla is well reviewed but rarely the class pick.
