The verdict

A struggling compact sedan, strong on reliability and held back by performance.

The 2018 Corolla is a late-life version of the 11th-generation car that Toyota sold in the US from 2014 to 2019. It is about as cheap to own and as trouble-free as a compact sedan gets: it held roughly 72% of its value after five years, costs about $2,000 in maintenance over that time, and comes with automatic emergency braking and radar cruise on every trim. In return it is slow (132 hp, about 9.5 s to 60 mph), it has no Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, and the trunk is small. Buy it as a durable appliance, not for driving enjoyment. No Corolla Hybrid was sold in the US for 2018.

Detailed scoring by subject

1Performance & PowertrainThe Corolla's lowest-graded category.0.00F
Horsepower
132 hp (L/LE/XLE/SE/XSE 1.8L 2ZR-FE); 140 hp LE Eco (Valvematic 2ZR-FAE) is the range max
1/100
#10 of 12 Compact CarsCompare all →

The 2018 US Corolla sedan is still the 11th-generation E170 (2014–2019 in North America; the TNGA E210 sedan did not reach the US until MY2020), and the volume LE uses the 1.8L 2ZR-FE rated at 132 hp. That sits at the very bottom of the sedan band, and even the LE Eco's 140 hp barely moves it.

Torque
128 lb-ft @ 4,400 rpm (LE); 126 lb-ft LE Eco
2/100
#10 of 12 Compact CarsCompare all →

128 lb-ft arriving high in the rev range at 4,400 rpm is typical of a naturally aspirated small four and lands near the floor of the sedan band; turbocharged rivals of the era (Civic 1.5T, Cruze 1.4T) made 162–177 lb-ft much lower down.

0–60 mph time
9.5 s (CVT, instrumented); ~8.9–9.8 s across trims/tests
0/100
#11 of 12 Compact CarsCompare all →

Instrumented testing of the facelifted E170 sedan with the CVT put 0–60 at about 9.5 seconds, which is at the slow edge of the sedan band and noticeably behind the 2018 Civic, Mazda3 and Elantra Sport. The 2018 powertrain is unchanged from the 2017 car tested.

Powertrain refinement45
#10 of 12 Compact CarsCompare all →

The 2ZR-FE is smooth and quiet at a steady cruise, but it has little low-end torque and becomes loud and coarse when worked hard on on-ramps or hills, which reviewers routinely flagged as the E170's chief weakness against more modern turbo and direct-injection rivals.

Transmission behavior55
#11 of 12 Compact CarsCompare all →

The CVTi-S is smooth in gentle driving and simulates stepped shifts under harder throttle (seven steps with paddles on SE/XSE), which keeps drone in check better than older CVTs, but it still flares and holds high revs during full-throttle acceleration. A 6-speed manual was offered on the SE.

AWD/4WD availability5
#7 of 12 Compact CarsCompare all →

Every 2018 Corolla sedan is front-wheel drive only; AWD would not reach the Corolla line until the 2022 Corolla Cross and the 2023 Corolla Hybrid's eFour system.

Powertrain lineup breadth25
#10 of 12 Compact CarsCompare all →

One engine in two tunes — the 132-hp 2ZR-FE and the 140-hp Valvematic LE Eco — with a CVT or, on the SE only, a 6-speed manual. There was no turbo option and no hybrid in the US for 2018 (the Corolla Hybrid arrived with the 2020 E210 sedan), so the registry's hybrid offering does not apply to this model year.

2Efficiency & RangeGrades below the middle of the scale.1.54D
Combined fuel economy
32 MPG combined (L/LE/XLE CVT); 31 SE/XSE CVT, 30 SE 6MT, 34 LE Eco (33 with 2-mode CVT)
58/100
#6 of 12 Compact CarsCompare all →

The volume LE with the CVT is EPA-rated 32 MPG combined — respectable for a 2018 compact but a few MPG behind the best gas rivals, and well short of the 35 MPG the 2.0L Corolla later achieved. No hybrid was sold in the US for 2018, so the 34-MPG LE Eco is the most efficient version.

City fuel economy
28 MPG city (LE CVT); 27 SE 6MT, 30 LE Eco
55/100
#8 of 12 Compact CarsCompare all →

28 MPG city is the Corolla's weakest figure — a port-injected four with no stop-start and no electric assist pays for every stop-and-go cycle — and sits in the middle of the sedan band.

Highway fuel economy
36 MPG highway (LE CVT); 35 SE/XSE and 6MT, 40 LE Eco
57/100
#10 of 12 Compact CarsCompare all →

36 MPG highway is solid but unremarkable for the era; the LE Eco's taller tune and aero tweaks reach 40 MPG, but it is not the volume configuration.

Driving range
422 mi (LE CVT, 13.2-gal tank × 32 MPG); 449 mi LE Eco
35/100
#4 of 12 Compact CarsCompare all →

A 13.2-gallon tank at 32 MPG combined gives about 422 miles — adequate, but in the lower third of the sedan band because both the tank and the efficiency are modest.

Estimated annual fuel cost
$2,100/yr (LE CVT, EPA 15k mi on regular); $2,150 SE/XSE CVT, $2,250 6MT, $1,950 LE Eco
50/100
#10 of 12 Compact CarsCompare all →

EPA's current estimate for the volume LE is $2,100 a year at 15,000 miles on regular — mid-band for a sedan. Note fueleconomy.gov reprices every model year to current fuel prices; on the same basis the 2023 2.0L Corolla now reads $1,900.

Fuel requirements90
#4 of 12 Compact CarsCompare all →

Every 2018 Corolla configuration runs on 87-octane regular unleaded with no premium recommendation and no plug — as cheap and simple to fuel as a car gets.

3SafetyOne of the Corolla's strongest categories.2.37C+
NHTSA overall rating
5 stars overall (frontal 4, side 5, rollover 4)
100/100
#1 of 12 Compact CarsCompare all →

The 2018 Corolla sedan (a carry-over year of the E170 US sedan, which ran 2014–2019 before the TNGA sedan arrived for MY2020) carries NHTSA's five-star overall rating, with four stars in the frontal and rollover tests.

IIHS awards & crashworthiness80
#2 of 12 Compact CarsCompare all →

Good in every crashworthiness test IIHS ran (driver small overlap, moderate overlap, side, roof, head restraints) and named a 2018 Top Safety Pick; it missed TSP+ under the tougher 2018 criteria because its headlights rated only Acceptable, and the passenger-side small overlap test was never run on it.

Standard ADAS suite breadth62
#2 of 12 Compact CarsCompare all →

Toyota Safety Sense-P is standard on every 2018 trim: AEB with pedestrian detection, lane departure alert with steering assist, auto high beams and radar cruise. That was broad for a 2018 compact, but no trim offered blind-spot monitoring or rear cross-traffic alert.

Automatic emergency braking performance72
#2 of 12 Compact CarsCompare all →

IIHS rated the standard system Superior for vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention, with no collision in the 12 and 25 mph tests. Pedestrian detection is first-generation and daytime-oriented, with no IIHS pedestrian or night rating for this year.

Blind-spot & cross-traffic coverage10
#12 of 12 Compact CarsCompare all →

No 2018 Corolla sedan trim offered blind-spot monitoring or rear cross-traffic alert, which leaves only the mirrors and the standard backup camera.

Lane keeping & centering55
#2 of 12 Compact CarsCompare all →

The standard Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist nudges the car back at the lane edge but does no lane centering, so it works as a basic warning-led system.

Adaptive cruise & highway assist50
#6 of 12 Compact CarsCompare all →

Standard Dynamic Radar Cruise Control was rare in a 2018 compact. It works at highway speeds only, with no stop-and-go, and has no highway-assist integration.

Hands-free driving availability5
#2 of 12 Compact CarsCompare all →

The 2018 Corolla offered no hands-free driving capability.

Headlight performance62
#1 of 12 Compact CarsCompare all →

Both headlight variants (L/LE/LE Eco and SE/XLE/XSE) rate Acceptable and come with standard automatic high beams. Results are consistent across the range, but no variant reaches Good.

Outward visibility65
#5 of 12 Compact CarsCompare all →

The upright greenhouse gives decent forward and side sightlines. The rear quarters have blind zones, and neither a blind-spot monitor nor a 360 camera was offered; a backup camera is standard.

Child-seat (LATCH) usability60
#9 of 12 Compact CarsCompare all →

IIHS rates LATCH ease of use Acceptable. The two outboard positions have full hardware and the center seat is tether-only. Rear legroom is generous for the class, which helps with rear-facing seats.

4Space & ComfortMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.28C
Seating capacity
5 seats (all trims)
100/100
#1 of 12 Compact CarsCompare all →

The 2018 US Corolla sedan is still the 11th-generation E170 (the TNGA E210 sedan arrived for MY2020), and every trim seats five on a 60/40 split rear bench.

Front headroom
38.3 in (without moonroof)
57/100
#11 of 12 Compact CarsCompare all →

38.3 inches is mid-pack for a compact sedan; the XLE's standard moonroof trims it slightly.

Front legroom
42.3 in
57/100
#3 of 12 Compact CarsCompare all →

Front legroom is competitive with the 2018 Civic (42.3 in) and ahead of the Mazda3.

Rear headroom
37.1 in
53/100
#9 of 12 Compact CarsCompare all →

37.1 inches of rear headroom is average for the class; the E170's upright roofline avoids the fastback squeeze of some rivals.

Rear legroom
41.4 in
94/100
#1 of 12 Compact CarsCompare all →

The E170's 106.3-in wheelbase gives 41.4 inches of rear legroom, a mid-size-sedan figure and the standout strength of this car's packaging.

Cargo/trunk volume
13.0 cu ft
30/100
#11 of 12 Compact CarsCompare all →

13.0 cu ft trails the 2018 Civic sedan (15.1) and Elantra (14.4); the 60/40 folding rear seat helps with long items.

In-cabin storage & clever solutions52
#9 of 12 Compact CarsCompare all →

There is a phone shelf under the center stack, a console box, cupholders and door pockets. That is adequate but ordinary storage, with one USB port and one 12V outlet and nothing clever.

Seat comfort60
#8 of 12 Compact CarsCompare all →

Front seats are reasonably comfortable for commuting but flat and short on support over long drives. A power driver seat is offered only on the XLE, and the generous rear bench is a plus.

Ride quality64
#8 of 12 Compact CarsCompare all →

The LE's 15/16-inch wheels and soft tuning soak up most bumps, but the torsion-beam rear can feel floaty and unsettled over broken pavement. SE/XSE 17-inch wheels firm things up.

Cabin quietness55
#7 of 12 Compact CarsCompare all →

Toyota fitted an acoustic windshield and extra insulation, so cruising is reasonably hushed. But road noise and a buzzy engine under acceleration keep it average.

Climate & comfort features45
#10 of 12 Compact CarsCompare all →

Automatic climate control is standard from the LE up, which is good for the price. Heated front seats are limited to XLE/XSE, and there are no rear vents, no heated wheel, no ventilated seats and no remote start.

5Cost of OwnershipOne of the Corolla's strongest categories.3.37B+
Base MSRP
$19,495 (L CVT, incl. $895 destination)
100/100
#1 of 12 Compact CarsCompare all →

The 2018 US Corolla is a carry-over of the facelifted 11th-generation E170 (the TNGA E210 sedan reached the US only for MY2020), and its entry L trim opened at $18,600 before an $895 delivery fee. That is below the $22,000 sedan floor.

Volume-Trim Price
$19,930 (LE CVT incl. $895 destination); SE $21,440 · XLE $22,930 · XSE $23,675
100/100
#1 of 12 Compact CarsCompare all →

The LE CVT is the Corolla's volume seller. At $19,930 delivered it is below the $24,000 sedan volume-trim floor, and even the top XSE stays under $24,000.

5-Year Maintenance & Repair Cost
~$2,000 over 5 years (maintenance + repairs)
100/100
#1 of 12 Compact CarsCompare all →

The port-injected 2ZR-FE 1.8L and a simple FWD chassis make the E170 one of the cheapest compact sedans to keep running, and ToyotaCare pays for scheduled service in the first two years. This estimate sits a little above CarEdge's current-generation projection to allow for the older drivetrain.

5-Year Resale Value Retention
~71.6% of original price retained at 5 years (2018 cohort)
100/100
#1 of 12 Compact CarsCompare all →

Measured on real five-year-old 2018 cars, the Corolla held about 72% of its original price, helped by the 2021–2023 used-car price spike and Toyota's reliability reputation. That is above the 65% band ceiling and only a few points behind the 2018 Civic's 77%.

Basic warranty
3 yr / 36,000 mi bumper-to-bumper
0/100
#4 of 12 Compact CarsCompare all →

This is Toyota's standard basic coverage, at the floor of the band. It matches Honda and Mazda and is two years short of Hyundai and Kia.

Powertrain warranty
5 yr / 60,000 mi powertrain
0/100
#5 of 12 Compact CarsCompare all →

The 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain term is the band floor and half of Hyundai/Kia's 10/100k. There was no US Corolla Hybrid for 2018, so the gas-car term is the only one that applies.

Complimentary maintenance & perks60
#3 of 12 Compact CarsCompare all →

ToyotaCare covers factory-scheduled maintenance for 2 years/25,000 miles and includes 2 years of unlimited-mileage roadside assistance. That is real included coverage the 2018 Civic and Mazda3 lacked, but it is shorter than a multi-year plan, and the 2018 Corolla had no meaningful connected-service trials.

Effective 5-Year Ownership Cost
$7,660 (≈$5,660 depreciation + $2,000 maintenance)
100/100
#1 of 12 Compact CarsCompare all →

$19,930 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (71.6% retained, or about $14,270) leaves about $5,660 in depreciation. Add the projected $2,000 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $7,660 in total.

6Reliability & QualityThe Corolla's best-graded category.3.67A-
Predicted reliability89
#1 of 12 Compact CarsCompare all →

In the US, the 2018 Corolla sedan is a carry-over year of the eleventh-generation (E170) car after its 2017 refresh; the twelfth-generation E210 sedan did not arrive here until MY2020, despite the registry's 2018 generation boundary, which reflects the global launch. Owner data at three years is strong from both major sources. In J.D. Power's 2021 VDS, which surveyed 2018 model-year owners, the Corolla tied for second in the Compact Car segment behind the VW Beetle, and Consumer Reports rates the 2018 well above average. It lands a little below the 2019, which won its segment outright.

Brand reliability track record90
#1 of 12 Compact CarsCompare all →

Toyota sits at or near the top of Consumer Reports' brand reliability rankings every year, and well ahead of the industry average in J.D. Power's dependability studies. In J.D. Power's PP100 list it sometimes trails a few low-volume or luxury marques rather than ranking top-five outright, which keeps it just short of the ceiling.

Recall & TSB history71
#1 of 12 Compact CarsCompare all →

The recall count is typical but includes two serious campaigns. 20V-024 (2011–2019 Corolla) covers an airbag control ECU that can malfunction in certain crashes and disable the airbags and pretensioners. It is a supplier-level (ZF-TRW) issue shared across makes, and the fix is a noise filter. The 2018 model year was also included in the Denso low-pressure fuel pump recalls (20V-012 and its expansion), which carry a stall risk. The rest are regional label campaigns. Nothing is systemic to the E170 powertrain, but a restraint recall and a stall-risk recall keep it out of the top band.

Powertrain durability reputation90
#1 of 12 Compact CarsCompare all →

The volume LE uses the 1.8L 2ZR-FE naturally aspirated port-injected four with the CVTi-S (the SE also offered a 6-speed manual). This is one of the most proven small-car powertrains on the road, used in Corollas since 2009 with a large high-mileage record and no systemic failure mode. Toyota's E170 CVT has held up much better than rival CVTs of the same era.

Interior material quality53
#12 of 12 Compact CarsCompare all →

The 2017 refresh added a padded, stitched dash insert and a cleaner center stack, but the E170 cabin was still dominated by hard plastics on the doors and lower dash. Reviewers ranked it behind the Mazda3 and the tenth-generation Civic for richness. Materials are durable and age well, which keeps it out of the bottom band.

Fit & finish76
#1 of 12 Compact CarsCompare all →

Built on long-established tooling in the generation's fifth year, the 2018 sedan has consistent assembly with no pattern of panel-gap or water-leak complaints. Consumer Reports does flag body hardware as a minor trouble spot, and owners report some scattered interior rattles. Solid overall, with only scattered complaints.

Dealer & service network88
#1 of 12 Compact CarsCompare all →

Toyota's network of 1,200+ US dealers is one of the densest in the country, so service is reachable almost anywhere. Service satisfaction is good but not class-leading in J.D. Power's CSI, where lower-volume brands often edge it out.

Parts availability & repair cost95
#1 of 12 Compact CarsCompare all →

This is close to the best case in the market. The E170 Corolla sold in huge numbers from 2014 to 2019 and its 2ZR-FE engine is shared across the Toyota and Scion lineup, so OEM and aftermarket parts are abundant and cheap and every independent shop knows the car. RepairPal puts ownership cost well below the compact average.

7Technology & InfotainmentOne of the Corolla's weakest categories.0.00F
Touchscreen size
6.1 in Entune Audio (L/LE/LE Eco); 7 in Entune Audio Plus on SE CVT/XLE/XSE and optional on LE
0/100
#1 of 12 Compact CarsCompare all →

The volume LE gets the 6.1-inch Entune Audio screen, below the bottom of the sedan band. The 7-inch upgrade is the max.

Infotainment UX & responsiveness40
#11 of 12 Compact CarsCompare all →

Entune is simple, with physical volume/tune knobs and capacitive shortcut keys. But the screen is small, graphics are dated and the app-based features are clunky, and reviewers rated it below rivals.

Wireless CarPlay / Android Auto5
#11 of 12 Compact CarsCompare all →

Neither Apple CarPlay nor Android Auto, wired or wireless, was offered on any 2018 Corolla sedan, while most 2018 rivals had both.

Voice control & native navigation30
#10 of 12 Compact CarsCompare all →

There is basic voice command plus Siri Eyes Free. Navigation is only the phone-tethered Scout GPS 'Connected Navigation App' on Entune Audio Plus, and no embedded nav is offered.

Audio system quality35
#12 of 12 Compact CarsCompare all →

The standard six-speaker system is merely adequate. The Entune Premium Audio upgrade adds features rather than meaningful sound quality, and no branded premium system was offered.

Digital instrument cluster25
#9 of 12 Compact CarsCompare all →

Analog gauges throughout. The L has a 3.5-inch monochrome multi-information display, and upper trims get a larger color TFT between the dials. No digital cluster is offered.

OTA update capability5
#9 of 12 Compact CarsCompare all →

The 2018 Corolla has no over-the-air software updates. Head-unit updates require a dealer visit, and navigation runs off the phone app.

Companion app & remote functions15
#11 of 12 Compact CarsCompare all →

The Entune App Suite streams Pandora/iHeart/Yelp through the phone but provides no remote lock, start, locate or vehicle status. Toyota's Remote Connect telematics were not offered on the E170 Corolla.

Charging ports & device power22
#11 of 12 Compact CarsCompare all →

There is a single USB-A media port and one 12V outlet up front, with no rear ports and no wireless charging on the volume trims.

Keyless & remote access35
#10 of 12 Compact CarsCompare all →

The volume LE uses a conventional key with remote keyless entry. The Smart Key System with push-button start is limited to the XLE/XSE (and the LE Eco/SE upgrade packages), and there is no factory remote start.

Camera & parking aids30
#10 of 12 Compact CarsCompare all →

A low-resolution backup camera is standard, but there are no parking sensors, no surround view and no rear cross-traffic alert on any trim.

Head-up display availability0
#7 of 12 Compact CarsCompare all →

No head-up display was offered on any 2018 Corolla trim.

8Use-Case FitOne of the Corolla's weakest categories.1.31D
Kid & car-seat practicality58
#4 of 12 Compact CarsCompare all →

With 41.4 inches of rear legroom, rear-facing child seats fit without crushing the front occupants, and the rear doors open wide. IIHS rates LATCH only Acceptable, and the 13 cu ft trunk is tight for a full-size stroller plus groceries.

Family safety package70
#3 of 12 Compact CarsCompare all →

It was a 2018 IIHS Top Safety Pick with 5-star NHTSA overall, and TSS-P (AEB with pedestrian detection, lane departure alert, radar cruise, auto high beams) is standard even on the base L. Blind-spot monitoring and a rear-seat reminder are not available.

Family road-trip comfort48
#8 of 12 Compact CarsCompare all →

Rear-seat space is generous for four adults, but rear passengers get no vents, USB ports or armrest amenities beyond the basics. The 13 cu ft trunk limits luggage for a family of four.

Daily driving ease66
#9 of 12 Compact CarsCompare all →

Light controls, a smooth CVT at low speed, good outward visibility and standard radar cruise make it an easy, low-stress commuter. It feels sluggish merging, and the radar cruise does not work down to a stop.

Commuting cost efficiency72
#5 of 12 Compact CarsCompare all →

It runs on regular fuel and returns about 32 mpg combined (LE CVT), with cheap Toyota consumables and low insurance. Running costs are very low, though turbo and hybrid rivals edge it on mpg.

Parking & maneuverability70
#8 of 12 Compact CarsCompare all →

The 183-inch length and 35.6-ft turning circle (LE) make it easy to park, with good sightlines and a standard backup camera. There are no parking sensors.

Work capability12
#9 of 12 Compact CarsCompare all →

No tow rating is published for the US market. A 132-hp FWD compact sedan with a 13 cu ft trunk is not a work vehicle.

Durability for work duty72
#1 of 12 Compact CarsCompare all →

The 2ZR-FE/CVT E170 has a strong reliability record and is a fleet, rental and rideshare staple that routinely exceeds 200k miles. The light-duty interior plastics wear but hold up.

Jobsite & upfit practicality10
#10 of 12 Compact CarsCompare all →

There is no onboard power beyond a 12V socket, no cargo tie-down system to speak of and no upfit ecosystem. It is a sedan trunk and nothing more.

Long-distance comfort & range58
#5 of 12 Compact CarsCompare all →

Highway cruising is relaxed thanks to a soft ride, standard radar cruise and lane departure alert, and the 13.2-gal tank at 36 mpg highway gives roughly 475 miles. The seats lack long-haul support and the engine drones on grades.

Outdoor & adventure capability18
#9 of 12 Compact CarsCompare all →

FWD only, with low ground clearance, no roof rails and no tow rating. It handles graded gravel roads but offers little outdoor utility.

Gear & luggage flexibility42
#9 of 12 Compact CarsCompare all →

A standard 60/40 split-folding rear seat helps with long items, but the 13 cu ft trunk and sedan opening make bulky gear a squeeze, and there are no roof rails or hitch.

9Driving ExperienceGrades below the middle of the scale.1.47D
Handling & agility50
#11 of 12 Compact CarsCompare all →

The E170 is secure and predictable but unremarkable, with noticeable body roll and modest grip from LE-size tires and a torsion-beam rear. It is clearly behind the 2018 Civic and Mazda3, and the SE/XSE 17s help only a little.

Steering feel45
#10 of 12 Compact CarsCompare all →

The electric power steering is light and accurate enough for parking and commuting but numb and slow, with little feedback.

Braking confidence55
#9 of 12 Compact CarsCompare all →

Stopping power is adequate and Superior-rated AEB is standard, but the volume L/LE/LE Eco trims use rear drum brakes with a soft pedal, and instrumented stops are mid-pack.

Powertrain smoothness & response52
#10 of 12 Compact CarsCompare all →

The CVTi-S is smooth and mimics steps under hard throttle, but the 132-hp 1.8L offers weak low-end response and the car feels slow to build speed. There is no stop/start to trip over.

Drivetrain noise & vibration45
#10 of 12 Compact CarsCompare all →

It is quiet at steady cruise, but the 2ZR-FE gets loud and coarse when the CVT holds high revs on on-ramps and hills.

Turning circle
35.6 ft (L/LE/LE Eco/XLE); ~37.8 ft SE/XSE on 17-in wheels
73/100
#9 of 12 Compact CarsCompare all →

The volume LE's 35.6-ft curb-to-curb circle is tight for the class.

Driving position & ergonomics62

Tilt/telescoping wheel, simple physical climate and audio controls and good sightlines make for an easy driving position. Manual seat height adjustment on lower trims and a low-set screen are minor drawbacks.

It is appliance-like by reviewers' consensus: slow, numb and noisy when pushed. Even the SE with the six-speed manual barely changes the character.

Every 2018 Corolla, including the $18,600 L, came with Toyota Safety Sense-P: automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, full-range adaptive cruise, lane-departure alert with steering assist, and auto high beams. LED headlights and a backup camera were also standard, which was well ahead of rivals that charged for active safety. Points come off because Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were unavailable at any price, and the base cabin was plain.

A sub-$20,000 delivered LE with a full driver-assist suite, Toyota durability and very strong resale is good value on paper. Its 132-hp 1.8L, dated interior and missing smartphone integration leave it behind the Civic, Mazda3 and Elantra on capability per dollar, so it lands at fair value rather than standout.

There are seven well-spaced price points: L, LE, LE Eco, SE CVT, SE 6MT, XLE and XSE. Configuration choice is thin, though: one engine family, FWD only, no hybrid, and a manual only on the SE. Sedan only, since the Corolla iM hatchback was a separate model line.

Sales popularity & market acceptance78

With about 300,000 US sales in calendar 2018, the Corolla was the second-best-selling compact car, just behind the Civic. Volume was falling, though, as the generation aged and buyers moved to crossovers.

Brand desirability & image78

Toyota's reputation for reliability and resale is a real halo for the Corolla and drives its used-market demand. The nameplate's appliance image is what holds this short of aspirational.

Deals & incentive availability72

As a late-cycle, high-volume model, the 2018 Corolla commonly carried cash rebates and subsidized APR offers, and prices were negotiable, especially as the 2020 redesign approached. These incentives were real buyer benefits without fire-sale pricing.

Model freshness32

The US sedan was the E170 generation launched for MY2014 and facelifted for MY2017. For 2018 it was a pure carry-over, with only the 50th Anniversary edition dropped. A ground-up TNGA replacement arrived for MY2020, so 2018 buyers got an aging car near the end of its run.

Critical reception & awards45

Reviewers praised its ride, standard safety and dependability, but it routinely finished at or near the bottom of compact-sedan comparison tests against the Civic, Mazda3 and Golf for driving dynamics, power and interior quality. It won no 10Best or comparison-test awards.
