The verdict

A mixed-report compact luxury sedan, strong on reliability and held back by efficiency.

The 2021 Lexus IS is the year this compact luxury sedan got a serious chassis rework, and it shows: it out-handled a BMW 330i xDrive around MotorTrend's figure eight while riding more comfortably than it has any right to. Buy it for what Lexus does best — a Top Safety Pick+ with every driver-assist feature standard, the best reliability record in the business, and resale strong enough to win KBB's class award. Buy it in spite of the practical stuff: 32.2 inches of rear legroom and a 10.8-cubic-foot trunk are near the bottom of the class, the standard 8-inch screen was small even in 2021, and the volume IS 300's 241-hp turbo four needs 6.9 seconds to reach 60 mph. As a used buy today it's a two-person car that will cost you almost nothing in surprises.

Detailed scoring by subject

1Performance & PowertrainGrades below the middle of the scale.1.13D
Horsepower
241 hp (IS 300 RWD 2.0L turbo); 260 hp IS 300 AWD V6, 311 hp IS 350 F SPORT
28/100
#6 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The volume IS 300 RWD carries the 2.0L turbocharged inline-four at 241 hp — modest output for a compact luxury sedan, and unchanged by the extensive 2021 chassis and body refresh, which was a handling update rather than a powertrain one.

Torque
258 lb-ft (IS 300 RWD 2.0T); 236 lb-ft IS 300 AWD V6, 280 lb-ft IS 350
42/100
#5 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

At 258 lb-ft the turbo four actually out-torques the naturally aspirated V6 fitted to the AWD car, and delivers it low in the rev range, which is what makes the IS 300 RWD feel adequate in normal driving despite its horsepower deficit.

0–60 mph time
6.9 sec (IS 300 RWD); 5.6 sec IS 350 F SPORT RWD, 5.7 sec IS 350 F SPORT AWD
40/100
#8 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

6.9 seconds to 60 mph makes the volume IS 300 RWD the slowest car in its own lineup and mid-pack at best against turbocharged German rivals — the 2021 refresh sharpened the chassis without addressing the pace.

Powertrain refinement63
#8 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The 2.0T is the least polished part of an otherwise quiet, well-isolated car: reviewers of the refreshed 2021 IS consistently single out off-boost lag and a coarse, characterless note under hard throttle, against a V6 that is smoother but no quicker in the AWD IS 300.

Transmission behavior75
#3 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The representative RWD IS 300 gets the 8-speed Sport Direct Shift automatic with G-force Artificial Intelligence gear selection and paddle shifters — smooth, decisive, and not prone to hunting. Choosing AWD drops the car to an older 6-speed, so the volume configuration has the better unit.

AWD/4WD availability60
#8 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

All-wheel drive is offered on both the IS 300 and IS 350 but never with the volume 2.0T engine — specifying it forces the 3.5L V6 and the older 6-speed automatic and costs 3 MPG combined. The system is conventional full-time AWD with electronically controlled front-to-rear torque split, with no terrain modes or low range.

Powertrain lineup breadth45
#6 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

2021 offers just two distinct engines — the 2.0L turbo four and the 3.5L V6 in 260 and 311 hp tunes — with no hybrid, plug-in or electric option anywhere in the range at a time when several rivals offered electrified variants. The V8 IS 500 that broadens this lineup does not arrive until 2022.

2Efficiency & RangeThe IS's lowest-graded category.0.00F
Combined fuel economy
25 MPG combined (IS 300 RWD); 23 MPG IS 350 RWD, 22 MPG IS 300 AWD and IS 350 AWD
29/100
#8 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The volume IS 300 RWD turbo four is the most efficient 2021 IS at 25 MPG combined — respectable for a rear-drive compact luxury sedan but unremarkable in a segment where several rivals offered electrified options.

City fuel economy
21 MPG city (IS 300 RWD); 20 MPG IS 350 RWD, 19 MPG for both AWD V6 models
23/100
#8 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

21 MPG in town is the weakest part of the IS 300's economy picture — the non-hybrid turbo four and rear-drive layout give it no city-cycle advantage, and it beats its own V6 siblings by only 1–2 MPG.

Highway fuel economy
31 MPG highway (IS 300 RWD); 28 MPG IS 350 RWD, 26 MPG for both AWD V6 models
33/100
#8 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The tall 8-speed automatic and modest frontal area give the IS 300 RWD a 31 MPG highway rating, its strongest EPA figure and a 5 MPG advantage over the AWD cars.

Driving range
435 mi (17.4-gal tank × 25 MPG combined); ≈383 mi for the AWD V6 models at 22 MPG
39/100
#3 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

A 17.4-gallon tank at the EPA's 25 MPG combined gives roughly 435 miles between fills — adequate for long trips but short of what larger or more efficient sedans manage on a tank.

Estimated annual fuel cost
$3,100/yr (EPA, 15,000 mi/yr, premium fuel); $3,350 IS 350 RWD, $3,500 for the AWD V6 models
5/100
#8 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

EPA estimates $3,100 a year to fuel the IS 300 at standard assumptions — a figure driven as much by the mandatory premium grade as by the 25 MPG rating, and near the top of the compact sedan cost band.

Fuel requirements22
#8 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

Every 2021 IS engine — including the volume 2.0T — requires premium unleaded, which carries a meaningful per-gallon penalty over regular and is the main reason the annual fuel cost lands where it does. There is no flex-fuel, hybrid or plug-in alternative in the 2021 lineup.

3SafetyOne of the IS's strongest categories.3.46B+
NHTSA overall rating
5 stars overall (4-star frontal, 5-star side, 5-star rollover) — same result for IS 300 RWD and AWD
100/100
#1 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

NHTSA tested the refreshed 2021 IS and awarded 5 stars overall to both drivetrains; the only sub-5 result is the 4-star frontal rating, which is common across the compact luxury sedan class.

IIHS awards & crashworthiness92
#2 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The 2021 IS is a Top Safety Pick+ with Good in all six crashworthiness tests and no headlight qualifier attached to the award — the strongest crash-test result available in the 2021 award year, and a clear step above the Alfa Romeo Giulia and Audi A3 in this segment.

Standard ADAS suite breadth88
#2 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

Lexus Safety System+ 2.5 is standard on every 2021 IS trim, and 2021 is the year blind spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert also became standard rather than packaged — so the whole core suite (AEB with pedestrian and bicyclist detection, full-speed adaptive cruise, lane departure alert with steering assist, lane tracing, BSM, RCTA) ships on the volume IS 300 with nothing locked to an upper trim.

Automatic emergency braking performance78
#4 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The standard system earned Superior in both IIHS front crash prevention evaluations that existed for the 2021 model year, avoiding collisions outright in every run. It falls short of the top band only because nighttime pedestrian performance is unverified — IIHS had not yet added that test — and Lexus itself rates pedestrian detection as day-and-low-light rather than full darkness.

Blind-spot & cross-traffic coverage76
#3 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

Blind Spot Monitor and Rear Cross Traffic Alert are standard on every 2021 trim — a genuine upgrade over the pre-refresh car, where they were packaged — but both are alert-only, with no cross-traffic braking intervention and no safe-exit warning for occupants opening a door into traffic.

Lane keeping & centering68
#3 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

Lane Departure Alert with steering assist and Lane Tracing Assist are standard and LTA's lane recognition was improved for the 2.5 suite, but it remains a light-touch centering system that only operates with radar cruise engaged and asks for correction on faded markings and tighter highway curves rather than holding the lane unaided.

Adaptive cruise & highway assist78
#3 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

Dynamic Radar Cruise Control is full-speed-range with stop-and-go and resume, and the 2.5 version adds turn-signal-triggered overtaking acceleration — a capable, well-integrated highway package when paired with LTA. It is short of the top band because it is a hands-on assist with the conservative gap-keeping and unhurried resume typical of Toyota-group radar cruise, not a rivalrous traffic-jam-assist system.

Hands-free driving availability5
#7 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

No hands-free highway system is offered on the 2021 IS at any trim or option level. Lexus Teammate — the brand's hands-off Advanced Drive system — launched on the 2022 LS 500h and never reached the IS, so the car's highest level of automation is hands-on LTA plus radar cruise.

Headlight performance84
#3 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The standard headlight fitted to the volume IS 300 is IIHS-rated Good and the Top Safety Pick+ award carries no 'with specific headlights' qualifier, meaning every 2021 IS leaves the factory with acceptable-or-better lighting; Intelligent High Beams are standard. The one deduction is that the optional Triple-Beam LED upgrade actually rates a step worse, at Acceptable.

Outward visibility68
#2 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The refreshed body keeps the low roofline, high beltline, heavily raked rear glass and broad rear quarter panels of this generation, so over-the-shoulder and straight-back sightlines are tight for the class. Standard blind spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert cover the worst of it, but the surround-view camera that would compensate for the rear three-quarter blind zone is a cost option rather than standard equipment.

Child-seat (LATCH) usability72
#2 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

IIHS rates the hardware itself Good, with two full LATCH positions plus a third tether-only anchor — better than many rivals score. What holds it back is the car around it: a compact sports sedan with modest rear legroom and a narrow, low door aperture makes fitting and buckling a rear-facing seat awkward, and three-across is not realistic.

4Space & ComfortMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.75C-
Seating capacity
5 seats (2 front, 3 rear) — every 2021 IS trim
100/100
#1 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The IS is a conventional five-seat compact sedan across the whole 2021 range; the extensive 2021 refresh reworked the body and chassis but left the cabin architecture and seating layout of the XE30 generation untouched.

Front headroom
38.2 in front headroom (reduces to about 37.2 in with the optional power moonroof)
55/100
#5 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

38.2 inches is a middling figure for a sedan and unchanged from the pre-refresh car — the 2021 update lowered and widened the bodywork without touching the greenhouse. Ticking the moonroof box costs roughly an inch.

Front legroom
44.8 in front legroom — class-leading for a compact luxury sedan
100/100
#1 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

44.8 inches is at the top of the sedan band and the single best interior-space number the IS posts; the front cabin is genuinely roomy even for tall drivers, which is part of why the back seat is so tight.

Rear headroom
36.9 in rear headroom (with moonroof-equipped cars slightly tighter)
47/100
#6 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

36.9 inches is mid-pack for a sedan and is the less problematic of the IS's two rear dimensions — the fastback roofline costs headroom but the seat is mounted low enough that adults clear the headliner.

Rear legroom
32.2 in rear legroom — among the tightest in the compact luxury sedan class
2/100
#8 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

32.2 inches sits essentially at the floor of the sedan band and roughly three inches behind the BMW 3 Series and Audi A4, making the IS's back seat a short-trip or child-sized proposition rather than a genuine second row for adults. The 2021 refresh did nothing to address it because the platform and wheelbase carried over.

Cargo/trunk volume
10.8 cu ft trunk (SAE) — same for RWD and AWD
8/100
#8 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

10.8 cubic feet is near the bottom of the sedan band and noticeably less than most rivals in the class, which cluster between 13 and 17 cubic feet; the opening is also narrow, so the usable figure is worse than the number suggests.

In-cabin storage & clever solutions45
#8 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

Storage is the ordinary compact-sedan set — a shallow center console bin partly consumed by the Remote Touch pad, modest door pockets, two front cupholders and a rear armrest pair — with no clever provisions, no underfloor tray and no onboard power beyond a 12V socket. A 60/40 split-folding rear seatback is the one useful flexibility feature, and it does not fold flat.

Seat comfort68
#7 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The front seats are the strong half — 10-way power driver and 8-way passenger adjustment with NuLuxe or leather trim, well-shaped and comfortable over long stints, and heated and ventilated once the Comfort or Ultra Luxury package is specified. The rear bench is the weak half: at 32.2 inches of legroom with a low cushion it is tolerable for short hops only, and the item grades front and rear together.

Ride quality74
#3 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

2021 is the year the chassis was genuinely reworked — 20% lighter coil springs, forged aluminum A-arms, new swing-valve dampers with ultralow-velocity valving and a stiffer body — and reviewers came away describing a compliant, solid ride that absorbs broken pavement without the float or harshness that usually accompanies this much added body control. The 19-inch F SPORT wheels firm it up, but the volume IS 300 rides on 18s.

Cabin quietness78
#2 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

Isolation is a Lexus strength and the IS delivers it: reviewers report little outside noise intruding at speed, and the stiffer 2021 body structure helps. It stops short of the top band because the 2.0L turbo four in the volume car becomes audible and unmusical when worked, unlike the V6 cars.

Climate & comfort features62
#6 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

Dual-zone automatic climate control is standard, but the comfort equipment that matters most — heated and ventilated front seats, heated steering wheel, moonroof — is bundled into the Comfort or the $7,600 Ultra Luxury package rather than fitted to the volume IS 300, and there are no rear climate vents or rear seat heating at all. Remote climate pre-conditioning exists only through the subscription Lexus app.

5Cost of OwnershipMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.55C+
Base MSRP
$40,025 (IS 300 RWD, incl. $1,025 destination)
45/100
#2 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

Lexus set the 2021 IS 300 RWD base price at $39,000 plus an unchanged $1,025 destination charge, a $440 increase over 2020 accompanying the mid-cycle XE30 refresh.

Volume-Trim Price
~$42,500 (IS 300 as typically equipped; range $40,025–$45,925 delivered)
46/100
#1 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The IS 300 (2.0T RWD / 3.5 V6 AWD) is the volume seller rather than the IS 350 F SPORT; a typically equipped IS 300 with the Premium Package, or an IS 300 AWD at $42,025 delivered, lands near $42,500.

5-Year Maintenance & Repair Cost
~$3,500 over 5 years / 75,000 mi (maintenance + repairs)
85/100
#1 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

Lexus is the cheapest premium brand to service and the IS uses long-running Toyota 8AR-FTS/2GR-FKS powertrains, so projected upkeep runs well under German compact-luxury rivals; the first year of scheduled service is also covered by Lexus.

5-Year Resale Value Retention
~63% of MSRP retained at 5 years (~$25,000 of a $40,025 base)
93/100
#1 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The IS is the segment's retention benchmark — KBB named the 2021 IS the Best Resale Value entry-level luxury car — and observed 2026 used values for a 2021 IS 300 sit around 60–70% of original delivered price depending on whether trade-in, private-party or retail is used.

Basic warranty
4 years / 50,000 miles bumper-to-bumper
50/100
#1 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

Lexus basic coverage runs 48 months or 50,000 miles, a year longer than the 3-year mainstream norm and matching BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Audi in the compact-luxury class.

Powertrain warranty
6 years / 70,000 miles powertrain
20/100
#2 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

Lexus powertrain coverage is 72 months or 70,000 miles — ahead of the German luxury rivals' 4/50, but well short of Genesis (10/100), Hyundai and Kia.

Complimentary maintenance & perks58
#4 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

Included scheduled maintenance is short — two visits inside the first year (6 mo/5,000 mi and 12 mo/10,000 mi) — but it is paired with four years of unlimited-mileage roadside assistance and long complimentary Lexus Connected Services trials, so the package beats Mercedes-Benz (no included maintenance in 2021) while trailing BMW's then-current 3-year/36,000-mile Ultimate Care and Genesis's 3-year/36,000-mile plan with valet service.

Effective 5-Year Ownership Cost
$19,225 (≈$15,725 depreciation + $3,500 maintenance)
76/100
#1 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

$42,500 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (63% retained, or about $26,775) leaves about $15,725 in depreciation. Add the projected $3,500 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $19,225 in total.

6Reliability & QualityThe IS's best-graded category.4.00A+
Predicted reliability87
#1 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

Two forces pull in opposite directions on this model year. 2021 is a change year, not a carry-over: it is the first year of the XE30 facelift, with new body panels and added weld points/reinforcements, a revised suspension layout (lighter coil springs, forged aluminum A-arms, new swing-valve dampers), relocated 8-inch and new available 10.3-inch touchscreens, and Lexus Safety System+ 2.5 — the kinds of new-for-this-year electrical and chassis content that a first facelift year usually pays for in early field problems. Against that, every engine and gearbox is unchanged from 2020, the car is now five model years into the field with no recall campaign against it, and it was built in the brand's strongest reliability year on record. Scored just under the later years of the same facelift (2023 at 90, 2025 at 88, 2026 at 89), which had the debugging behind them and, unlike this year, a model-year-specific Consumer Reports verdict; far above the sedan peer median of 71.5 and the German compact-luxury field.

Brand reliability track record94
#1 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The 2021 model year sits at the high-water mark of Lexus's dependability record, and by a wider margin than the 2023 car this dataset scores at 93: Lexus led the J.D. Power VDS by 33% over the industry (against 28% in 2023), took Consumer Reports' brand table outright, and was additionally the top premium brand in that year's Initial Quality Study. Held a point below the 95 recorded on the 2025 IS only because premium brands as a group trailed mass-market brands in the 2021 IQS, so Lexus's initial-quality win was a within-tier one.

Recall & TSB history90
#1 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

Five model years on, the 2021 IS carries no NHTSA recall campaign at all — the strongest recall position of any IS year in this dataset. All three campaigns filed against the nameplate miss it: the two Denso low-pressure fuel-pump actions of 2020 cover MY2017-2019 cars, and the April 2026 fuel-pump action swept in the adjacent 2022 IS but not this year. A five-year-old model year with a blank sheet is materially better evidence than a recent year's blank sheet, because the window in which a late campaign typically appears has largely passed. Scored above the 2023 IS (88) and well above the 2026 (82) for that reason, but short of the mid-90s because Toyota/Lexus TSB volume on this generation was assessed at generation level rather than from a fetched 2021-specific bulletin list, and a first facelift year is exactly where service bulletins cluster.

Powertrain durability reputation88
#1 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The 2021 facelift left the powertrains alone, so this year inherits long-serving, high-mileage-proven Toyota hardware with no new-design risk: the volume IS 300 RWD's 8AR-FTS 2.0-liter turbo four with the Aisin 8-speed, the 2GR-FKS 3.5-liter V6 in the IS 300 AWD and IS 350, and conventional torque-converter automatics throughout (no IS 500 V8 until 2022). The turbo four is the weakest link in the range — direct injection plus a turbo carries more carbon-buildup, turbo and water-pump exposure than the naturally aspirated V6 — and that is what holds this below the V6 trims rather than any model-specific failure mode. One year-specific point in this car's favor: the improved low-pressure fuel pump that resolved the 2017-2019 Denso campaigns was already fitted by this model year. Scored identically to 2025 and 2026, which carry the same hardware and the same evidence.

Interior material quality78
#5 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

This is the best year of the facelift for this item and is scored as such — the highest of the IS years in this dataset (2023 76, 2024 74, 2025 72, 2026 74). The materials themselves drew consistent praise from reviewers of the 2021 car (well-padded surfaces, convincing NuLuxe upholstery, Lexus's damped switchgear), and the dashboard architecture, while already dating to 2014, was seven years old rather than a decade-plus, and the 2021 refresh had just moved the screen closer to the driver and added new interior colorways. The criticism that keeps it out of the 80s is structural and not fixable by trim: a dated dash design and a cabin reviewers repeatedly call cramped. Below the 3 Series, which buys a more visually ambitious cabin for the same money, and above the similarly aged Cadillac CT4.

Fit & finish89
#1 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The IS's strongest quality attribute in any year: Tahara-built under the brand's takumi inspection regime, on a body and line that by 2021 had seven years to converge, and reviewers of this specific car describe assembly in absolute terms. Scored a shade below the 2023 car (92), which has a model-specific Initial Quality Study award behind it — for 2021 the supporting IQS evidence is brand-level (Lexus top premium brand) with no IS segment award found, and the facelift introduced new body panels and a new interior display module, which is when panel-gap and rattle complaints are likeliest to appear. Still comfortably above the 3 Series (86) and the rest of the segment field.

Dealer & service network88
#1 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

Coverage is thinner than BMW's or Mercedes-Benz's at roughly 240-245 US stores, but Lexus is the industry reference point for luxury service satisfaction — regularly leading or placing top-three in J.D. Power's Customer Service Index, with loaner cars and pickup-and-delivery standard practice. This is a brand-wide attribute with no model-year component, so it is scored the same as the other IS years and the ES and LS entries in this dataset, and above BMW (85) and Cadillac (78).

Parts availability & repair cost84
#1 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

Close to the best case for a luxury sport sedan: the engines and automatics are shared with high-volume Toyotas, the XE30 had been in production since 2014 by this model year so used and salvage supply is deep, an enthusiast aftermarket serves the IS/RC/GS family, and independent shops will take the work. Far above the dealer-dependent Germans (3 Series 55) and the low-volume LS flagship (68), but short of a Toyota-badged car because luxury-specific trim, glass, lighting and body panels still price at a premium — and the 2021 facelift's unique front and rear sheet metal and lightbar tail are a narrower parts pool than the pre-facelift body. Matched to 2023, 2024 and 2026 (all 84): same generation, same parts commonality.

7Technology & InfotainmentOne of the IS's weakest categories.1.08D
Touchscreen size
8.0 in standard (volume IS 300); 10.3 in with navigation or Mark Levinson
12/100
#7 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The volume IS 300 ships with the 8.0-inch display; the 10.3-inch screen arrives only bundled with navigation, Mark Levinson audio or the Ultra Luxury package. Both are small by 2021 standards even before the class moved to 12-inch-plus panels.

Infotainment UX & responsiveness50
#8 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

2021 is the year Lexus finally made the IS display a touchscreen and moved it nearly three inches closer to the driver so it can actually be reached — a real fix to the generation's worst ergonomic flaw. It is still the Remote Touch touchpad architecture underneath, with dated graphics and menu logic that reviewers consistently name as the car's weakest area, so the improvement lifts it to usable rather than good.

Wireless CarPlay / Android Auto58
#4 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and Amazon Alexa integration are all standard on every 2021 IS trim, which is the good news, but projection is wired only through a USB-A port — no wireless CarPlay or Android Auto is offered at any price on this model year.

Voice control & native navigation52
#7 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

Voice recognition and Bluetooth are standard but the assistant is the command-word Toyota-group system rather than a natural-language one, and native navigation is not fitted to the volume IS 300 at all — it is an option that brings the 10.3-inch screen with it. Most owners default to CarPlay or Android Auto maps.

Audio system quality82
#1 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The Mark Levinson upgrade was substantially improved for 2021 — 17 speakers and a new amplifier rated at 1,800 watts, up from 15 speakers and 835 watts — and is one of the better premium systems in the class. The standard Pioneer premium system is competent rather than remarkable, which keeps this just inside the top band rather than at the head of it.

Digital instrument cluster52
#8 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The volume IS 300 keeps analog Optitron dials with a small colour multi-information display between them — legible and well made, but not a configurable digital cluster. The LFA-inspired single-dial digital meter with its sliding ring is reserved for the IS 350 F SPORT, so full digital exists in the range but not on the trim most buyers take.

OTA update capability30
#8 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

There is no whole-vehicle over-the-air update capability on the 2021 IS — infotainment and control software are updated at the dealer. The only over-the-air content is subscription map data for cars ordered with the optional navigation system, which the volume IS 300 does not have.

Companion app & remote functions58
#7 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The Lexus app with Enform Remote covers the core functions — remote engine and climate start, lock and unlock, vehicle locate, fuel level, plus Alexa and Google Assistant voice control — but it is a trial-then-subscription service rather than included, and there is no phone-as-key capability. Lexus's paywalling of remote start has been a long-standing owner complaint.

Charging ports & device power30
#8 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

Device power is the weakest part of the package: two USB-A ports in the front console — one data for projection, one charge-only — with no USB-C anywhere, no rear-seat ports at all, and no wireless charging pad offered on the US 2021 IS. Only a single 12V socket supplements them.

Keyless & remote access64
#7 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

SmartAccess proximity entry with push-button start is standard on every trim and the trunk has remote release, which covers the everyday convenience well. What it lacks is a remote start fob — starting the car remotely requires the subscription app — and there is no digital or phone key of any kind.

Camera & parking aids55
#8 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

A backup camera is standard as federally required, but everything above it costs extra on the volume IS 300 — the Panoramic View Monitor and Intuitive Parking Assist with front and rear sensors are options, and there is no automated parking feature. That matters more here than on most cars because the IS's thick rear pillars and high beltline leave real blind zones.

Head-up display availability10
#6 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

No head-up display is offered on the 2021 IS at any trim or option level — the feature exists elsewhere in the Lexus range but was never fitted to this generation of IS, so the item scores in the 'not offered' band.

8Use-Case FitOne of the IS's weakest categories.1.00D
Kid & car-seat practicality45
#7 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The LATCH hardware itself is rated Good by IIHS with two complete positions, but the car around it fights family logistics: 32.2 inches of rear legroom leaves little room for a rear-facing seat behind a tall driver, the rear door aperture is narrow and the roofline low, and the 10.8-cubic-foot trunk makes a full-size stroller a planning exercise. Three across is not realistic.

Family safety package78
#4 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The safety proposition is genuinely strong and — unusually for the class — costs nothing extra: Top Safety Pick+ with Good in all six crashworthiness tests, 5-star NHTSA overall, and Lexus Safety System+ 2.5 standard on every trim, with 2021 the year blind spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert also became standard rather than packaged. It falls short of the top band only because there is no rear-occupant reminder and the surround-view camera is an option.

Family road-trip comfort40
#8 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

Four adults on a long drive is where the IS runs out of car: rear legroom is near the bottom of the sedan class, there are no rear air vents or rear climate controls on the IS 300, no rear USB ports for device charging, and a 10.8-cubic-foot trunk will not take four people's luggage. The cabin is quiet and the front seats are good, which keeps it out of the lowest band.

Daily driving ease72
#5 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

As a commuter the IS is close to its best — quiet, comfortably sprung after the 2021 chassis rework, light-steering at low speed, with a smooth 8-speed automatic and standard full-speed adaptive cruise with lane tracing for stop-and-go traffic. The 2.0T's off-boost lag on tip-in is the recurring annoyance that keeps it out of the top band.

Commuting cost efficiency45
#7 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

25 MPG combined would be merely average, but the IS requires premium fuel, which pushes the EPA annual cost to roughly $3,100 — expensive per commuting mile against hybrid-equipped rivals in the same price bracket, and worse still if AWD is specified because that forces the thirstier V6 down to 22 MPG.

Parking & maneuverability66
#5 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The footprint is genuinely city-friendly — 185.4 inches long on a 34.2-foot turning circle — and that does most of the work. What it gives back is visibility: the low roofline, high beltline and broad rear quarters leave real blind zones, and the parking sensors and 360-degree camera that would offset them are extra-cost options on the volume trim rather than standard.

Work capability10
#6 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The IS carries no factory tow rating in the US, has no bed or load floor to speak of, and offers 10.8 cubic feet of trunk behind a narrow opening. It is a compact luxury sports sedan and nothing about the 2021 refresh pointed it at work duty.

Durability for work duty35
#1 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The underlying mechanicals are about as durable as this class gets — the 2GR-FKS V6 and Toyota-group 8-speed automatic have long, proven service records and Lexus tops reliability surveys — but the car is configured entirely for luxury use: NuLuxe or leather trim, no wear-friendly interior option, no fleet presence, and a low-slung body unsuited to rough sites.

Jobsite & upfit practicality8
#7 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

There is essentially nothing here: no onboard AC power, no bed or tie-down system, no factory roof rails or rack provision, no hitch option, and no upfit ecosystem. A single 12V console socket is the extent of the onboard power.

Long-distance comfort & range72
#2 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

For two people the IS is a good tourer: a quiet, well-isolated cabin, comfortable and adjustable front seats, the newly compliant 2021 suspension, about 435 miles of range from the 17.4-gallon tank, and standard full-speed radar cruise with lane tracing to take the edge off highway hours. It is held back from the top band by the tight rear seat and small trunk when the car is fully loaded.

Outdoor & adventure capability28
#6 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

All-wheel drive is offered, which is the one point in its favour, but specifying it forces the V6 and the older 6-speed and it is a road-biased system with no terrain modes. Beyond that the IS is pavement-bound: roughly 6 inches of ground clearance, no factory roof rails or rack for bikes and boxes, no tow rating for toys, and no camping-friendly power or flat-folding provision.

Gear & luggage flexibility32
#8 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

A 60/40 split-folding rear seatback is fitted, which is more than some rivals in this class offer, but it does not fold flat and it opens into a 10.8-cubic-foot trunk through a narrow aperture. With no roof rails, no hitch option and no underfloor storage, anything bulky simply does not go.

9Driving ExperienceOne of the IS's strongest categories.2.95B-
Handling & agility80
#4 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

Handling is what the 2021 refresh was actually for, and the instrumented results back it up: the IS 300 AWD pulled 0.88 g on the skidpad and lapped MotorTrend's figure eight in 25.9 sec at 0.70 g, beating a BMW 330i xDrive by 0.7 second — and it did that without the adaptive dampers reserved for the F SPORT Dynamic Handling Package.

Steering feel62
#5 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

Accuracy is not the problem — the rack is quick and the nose goes where it is pointed — but reviewers consistently report light weighting and an absence of the road feedback that separates a genuine sports sedan from a quick one, and note the car feeling nose-heavy as speeds rise.

Braking confidence76
#4 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The brakes are a strong point: four-wheel discs with a firm, progressive pedal that reviewers report slowing the car confidently and, notably, showing no fade after repeated hard laps on mountain roads. It sits below the top band only because no standout instrumented stopping distance separates it from the class.

Powertrain smoothness & response66
#6 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The 8-speed Sport Direct Shift automatic in the volume RWD car is decisive and smooth and does not hunt, but the 2.0L turbo four it is attached to is the weak link — noticeable off-boost lag on tip-in, and 6.9 seconds to 60 mph makes it the slowest car in its own lineup. Choosing AWD swaps in a smoother V6 but an older 6-speed.

Drivetrain noise & vibration62
#6 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

At cruise the powertrain is barely there, in keeping with a generally well-isolated cabin, but worked hard the 2.0T turns coarse and characterless — the one intrusion reviewers single out in an otherwise hushed car. The naturally aspirated V6 in the AWD and IS 350 cars sounds considerably better under load.

Turning circle
34.2 ft curb-to-curb (IS 300 on 18-in wheels; slightly wider on F SPORT 19s)
97/100
#1 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

34.2 feet is essentially at the tight end of the sedan band and makes the IS easy to U-turn and park despite the compromised rearward visibility — a direct benefit of the compact 110.2-inch wheelbase and 185.4-inch length.

Driving position & ergonomics72
#5 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The driving position itself is good — 10-way power seat, tilt-and-telescope wheel, generous 44.8 inches of front legroom and a low, properly sporting hip point with well-placed pedals and climate controls. Two things cost it: over-the-shoulder and rearward sightlines are tight behind the high beltline and thick rear pillars, and the Remote Touch pad still sits where a driver's hand rests on the console.

Fun-to-drive factor66
#4 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The 2021 chassis is genuinely enjoyable — rear-drive balance, real grip, tidy body control and a ride that flatters it on a back road — but the volume IS 300's turbo four supplies neither the pace nor the sound to match, and enthusiasts steer buyers to the IS 350 for that reason. A good car to drive rather than a memorable one in this specification.

10Value & Market PositionMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.57C+
Standard equipment generosity74
#4 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

Every 2021 IS ships with Lexus Safety System+ 2.5 (pre-collision with pedestrian and daytime cyclist detection, full-speed dynamic radar cruise, lane tracing, road sign assist), blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert, an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, 10-way power driver and 8-way power passenger seats, dual-zone climate and NuLuxe upholstery — a deeper standard safety and connectivity list than a base BMW 330i or Mercedes C 300 of the same year. It stops short of standard leather, sunroof or premium audio, which keeps it out of the top band.

Feature value per dollar72
#4 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

At $40,025 delivered the IS 300 undercuts a comparably equipped C 300 by roughly $10,000 once standard safety kit is matched, and the 311-hp IS 350 F SPORT at $43,925 is one of the cheapest routes to a V6 in the class — reinforced by segment-best projected upkeep and resale. The 241-hp 2.0T is down on the 330i's output and the cabin is tighter than the class average, so it is strong value rather than a bargain.

Trim & configuration breadth58
#7 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

Four configurations only — IS 300 RWD (2.0T), IS 300 AWD (3.5 V6), IS 350 F SPORT RWD and AWD — plus Premium and F SPORT Dynamic Handling packages. For 2021 Lexus also pulled F SPORT off the IS 300, so a buyer wanting the sport look must step to the IS 350, and there is no hybrid, plug-in or manual option in a segment where BMW offered 330i, 330e and M340i.

Sales popularity & market acceptance66
#1 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

The refreshed IS sold 21,998 units in the US in calendar 2021, up 63.3% on 2020 — a clear sign the update landed — but that still trails the BMW 3 Series and Mercedes C-Class by a wide margin, leaving it a healthy mid-pack seller rather than a segment leader.

Brand desirability & image84
#2 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

Lexus carries one of the strongest ownership reputations in the industry — top-tier reliability rankings, class-leading resale and high owner loyalty — which measurably supports IS residuals. It reads as dependable rather than aspirational next to BMW and Mercedes badges in this specific segment, which caps it below the very top.

Deals & incentive availability56
#8 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

Lexus supported the 2021 IS with subvented lease and low-APR programs through Lexus Financial Services, but the newly refreshed model plus the semiconductor-driven inventory shortage that tightened through 2021 left little room to negotiate below MSRP for much of the model year — modest buyer benefit rather than deep discounting.

Model freshness58
#6 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

2021 is a substantial mid-cycle refresh — new sheetmetal, stiffer body structure, lighter suspension components, first 19-inch wheels and an available 10.3-inch touchscreen moved within reach — but it sits on the XE30 platform introduced for 2014 and retains the existing 2.0T and 3.5 V6, so the underlying architecture was already seven years old.

Critical reception & awards64
#8 of 8 Compact Luxury CarsCompare all →

Reviewers credited the refreshed chassis — MotorTrend recorded a 25.9-second figure eight at 0.70 g average for the IS 300 AWD, ahead of a BMW 330i xDrive — and the car collected an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ and KBB's class resale award. But it took no 10Best or NACTOY honour, and Consumer Reports judged it no match for the Audi A4 or BMW 3 Series on driving, interior room or fuel economy, which is the recurring comparison-test verdict.
