The verdict
A mixed-report compact sedan, strong on reliability and held back by performance.
The 2024 Civic sedan is still the compact car to beat for drivers who care how a car feels. It steers and handles better than almost anything in its class, holds its value (about 60% after five years) and is cheap to keep running. The volume Sport ($26,645) is a lot of car for the money, but its 158-hp engine is slow, its cabin is noisy at speed, and it leaves out blind-spot monitoring and heated seats. A 2024 model also has no hybrid and no AWD, and Honda's 3-year/36,000-mile warranty is the shortest in the class.
Jump to scoresStrengths
- Best-handling car in its class
- Strong resale and low cost to own
- Proven, cheap-to-fix hardware
What holds it back
- Slow base engine
- Shortest warranty in the class, no free maintenance
- Volume Sport trim is thin on features

Detailed scoring by subject
1Performance & PowertrainThe Civic's lowest-graded category.0.00F
The volume Sport trim uses the 2.0L naturally aspirated I-4 at 158 hp; 2024 is a carry-over year of the 11th generation (launched for 2022), so the 1.5T is still offered on EX/Touring and no hybrid exists yet.
The 2.0L makes 138 lb-ft at 4,200 rpm; the 1.5T's 177 lb-ft arrives from 1,700 rpm but is not the scored configuration.
Powertrain unchanged since 2022; instrumented tests of the 11th-gen 2.0L CVT sedan land around 8 to 8.8 seconds, with the 1.5T roughly 0.7 s quicker.
The 2.0L is smooth and linear at cruise but short of midrange punch and buzzy near redline; the optional 1.5T is livelier with mild lag.
Honda's CVT simulates step shifts under hard throttle and avoids most rubber-band drone, making it one of the better CVTs; the Si's 6-speed manual is widely praised.
Every 2024 Civic sedan is front-wheel drive; AWD-capable rivals such as the Mazda3 and Corolla Hybrid outclass it here.
Two engines (2.0L and 1.5T with CVT) plus the Si's 1.5T 6MT; no hybrid, PHEV or EV in 2024 — the hybrid arrived only for 2025.
2Efficiency & RangeOne of the Civic's weakest categories.1.68D
The volume Sport trim (2.0L, CVT with AV-S7 paddles) is EPA-rated 33 combined; the LX and 1.5T EX do slightly better.
EPA 30 MPG city for the Sport configuration.
EPA 37 MPG highway for the Sport configuration.
Derived from the official 12.4-gallon tank and the 33-MPG EPA combined rating; EPA publishes no range field for gas vehicles.
EPA's current annual fuel cost estimate at 15,000 mi/yr on regular gasoline for the Sport configuration.
Regular unleaded on every non-Si trim; no premium requirement.
3SafetyGrades above the middle of the scale.2.83B-
NHTSA gave the 2024 Civic sedan a 5-star overall rating. Frontal crash is the one sub-rating below 5 stars, held to 4 stars by the passenger-side result.
The 2024 Civic sedan won no award under IIHS's tougher 2024 criteria. It rated Good in small overlap and the original moderate overlap test, but only Acceptable in the updated moderate overlap test (rear passenger) and the updated side test. That is a mostly-good result with no award, so it sits in the middle band.
Honda Sensing is standard on every 2024 Civic: AEB with pedestrian detection, FCW, ACC with Low-Speed Follow, LKAS with Traffic Jam Assist, Road Departure Mitigation and traffic sign recognition. Blind Spot Information is left off the LX and the volume Sport and starts at the EX. Rear cross-traffic alert is Touring-only.
IIHS rated the standard system Acceptable in its 2024 pedestrian front crash prevention test (day and night combined). That is adequate rather than top-rated.
In 2024, blind-spot monitoring is fitted only from the EX up, and rear cross-traffic alert only on the Touring. The volume Sport has neither, and the systems that are offered warn without intervening. Honda extended BSI/RCTA to all Sport models for 2025, not 2024.
LKAS on the 11th-gen Civic uses a wide-view camera and centers the car smoothly with little ping-ponging, and Road Departure Mitigation is standard. Reviewers note occasional false alerts.
Every trim gets standard ACC with Low-Speed Follow plus Traffic Jam Assist. It is refined for the class, though it reacts abruptly to cut-ins.
No 2024 Civic offers hands-free driving. LKAS and Traffic Jam Assist both require hands on the wheel.
IIHS rated the headlights Good, and every trim gets LED headlights with auto high-beam as standard. They are not curve-adaptive.
A low cowl, slim A-pillars and door-mounted mirrors give an excellent forward view. The fastback roofline limits the view over the shoulder, and no 360° camera is offered.
IIHS rated LATCH ease of use Good+, the top rating, with anchors that are easy to reach and extra positions available. A compact rear bench makes three seats across impractical.
4Space & ComfortMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.27C
Five-passenger sedan on every 2024 trim, the maximum for the segment band.
The volume Sport has no moonroof and gets the full 39.3 in of front headroom.
Class-typical front legroom, unchanged from the 2022 redesign.
Fastback roofline still leaves mid-pack rear headroom for a compact sedan.
Rear legroom is competitive for the compact class, though shy of the Elantra/Sentra.
One of the larger trunks among compact sedans, mid-band against the whole sedan field.
Conventional console bin, door pockets and a single front USB-A port on the Sport; the volume Sport keeps a one-piece fold-down rear seatback, with 60/40 split only on EX/Touring.
Supportive front seats praised by reviewers, but the Sport offers only manual driver height adjustment and no lumbar; power driver seat is Touring-only.
Composed and smooth over most surfaces, though the Sport's 18-inch 235/40 tires add firmness over sharp impacts.
Elevated road noise is the Civic's most consistent complaint; the 2.0L also drones under hard acceleration through the CVT.
Automatic climate control is standard, but the volume Sport has no heated seats — dual-zone climate and heated fronts start at EX; no ventilated seats, heated wheel or rear vents controls on any trim.
5Cost of OwnershipMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.30C+
The 2024 LX sedan with the 2.0L engine is the entry trim. 2024 is a carry-over year of the 11th generation, priced near the bottom of the mainstream compact-sedan class.
The 2.0L Sport is the volume gas sedan trim. No hybrid was offered for 2024 (it returned for 2025), so the lineup was gas-only: 2.0L for LX and Sport, 1.5T for EX and Touring.
The two industry projections bracket the value, which is their midpoint. It is about average for a compact sedan. The naturally aspirated 2.0L has simple scheduled maintenance.
The Civic's residuals lead its class. KBB's projection is conservative and Edmunds' is generous, so the value is a blend leaning toward the conservative end.
Honda's bumper-to-bumper coverage is at the segment floor, behind the Elantra's and Forte's 5 yr / 60k.
This matches Toyota, Mazda and Nissan but trails Hyundai and Kia's 10 yr / 100k.
There is no factory complimentary scheduled maintenance, unlike ToyotaCare (2 yr / 25k) or Hyundai's 3 yr / 36k. Perks are limited to roadside assistance during the 3/36 warranty and a HondaLink connected-services trial on equipped trims.
$26,645 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (60% retained, or about $15,987) leaves about $10,658 in depreciation. Add the projected $5,800 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $16,458 in total.
6Reliability & QualityThe Civic's best-graded category.3.27B+
J.D. Power rates the 2024 Civic 'Great'. Consumer Reports, however, rates its reliability only about average for the 2024 model year, so the sources disagree and the score sits in the upper part of the mid-band. The 2025 refresh scored notably better with CR.
Honda usually ranks in the upper tier of Consumer Reports' brand rankings. Its J.D. Power dependability record was uneven around this model year (below the industry average in the 2023 VDS), so it lands in the upper mid-band rather than the elite tier.
Three NHTSA campaigns cover the 2024 model year, and two of them involve steering. The big one is a generation-wide recall of the steering gearbox, which can cause high steering friction. A second covers replacement steering racks installed incorrectly in service. Neither steering recall is a do-not-drive or park-outside advisory. The third, a driver's-seat fastener, is tiny.
The volume LX and Sport sedans use Honda's mature naturally aspirated 2.0-liter four with a CVT, which has a strong durability record. The 1.5-liter turbo used in EX and Touring has a history of oil dilution in earlier generations, which keeps the lineup as a whole just below the score the 2025 car earned after dropping that engine.
The eleventh-generation cabin is a compact-class benchmark: honeycomb vent trim, well-damped physical controls and good perceived quality even on lower trims. Hard plastics remain in low-touch areas, as expected at the price. LX and Sport carry the smaller 7-inch screen.
Reviews describe tight assembly and a vibration-free cabin. Average CR owner-reported reliability for this year, plus two manufacturing-related steering recalls, keep it in the upper mid-band.
Honda has one of the densest dealer networks in the US. The Civic's huge installed base means trained service is available almost everywhere, though quality varies by franchise.
Civic parts are plentiful through dealers, independent suppliers and one of the largest aftermarkets in the industry. Average repair cost is well below the compact-car norm.
7Technology & InfotainmentOne of the Civic's weakest categories.1.10D
The volume Sport uses the base 7-inch screen; the 9-inch unit is Touring-only.
Simple, quick 7-inch system with a physical volume knob and real climate knobs; graphics look dated and the screen is small.
Wired Apple CarPlay/Android Auto standard; wireless projection limited to the Touring.
No native navigation on the Sport — owners rely on phone projection; Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation with voice recognition is Touring-only.
Sport's 180-watt 8-speaker system is a step above the LX's 4 speakers; the 12-speaker Bose system is Touring-only.
Sport has a 7-inch digital display beside an analog speedometer; full 10.2-inch digital cluster only on Touring.
No whole-vehicle OTA program; infotainment system updates can be downloaded over Wi-Fi only.
HondaLink provides maintenance alerts and service scheduling, but remote start on the Sport is via key fob; no digital key.
Only a single 2.5-amp USB-A port plus a 12-volt outlet on the Sport; no USB-C, rear ports or wireless charging until EX/Touring.
Sport gets Smart Entry with Walk Away Auto Lock and remote engine start; push-button start standard; no phone-as-key.
Multi-angle rearview camera is standard, but parking sensors and Low-Speed Braking Control are Touring-only and no surround view is offered.
No head-up display on any 2024 Civic sedan trim.
8Use-Case FitMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.71C-
Easy LATCH access and decent rear legroom, but four sedan doors, a one-piece rear seatback on the Sport and a trunk opening limit stroller-and-gear logistics.
5-star NHTSA overall and full Honda Sensing (ACC, LKAS, AEB, driver attention monitor, rear seat reminder) standard, but no 2024 IIHS award and blind-spot monitoring is not on the volume Sport.
Spacious rear and a decent trunk, but road noise, no rear USB or heated seats on the Sport make longer family trips thin on amenities.
Smooth CVT, light controls and standard ACC with Low-Speed Follow plus Traffic Jam Assist make it an easy commuter.
Low-30s combined MPG on regular fuel with cheap consumables keeps per-mile costs low.
Compact 184-inch footprint and good visibility help, but the Sport's 38.1-ft turning circle and lack of parking sensors trail the LX/EX.
No US tow rating, FWD, 158-hp 2.0L and a 14.8 cu ft trunk — not a work vehicle.
The naturally aspirated 2.0L and simple Sport spec are robust, but cloth/sport interior and a passenger-car chassis aren't built for abuse.
No onboard 120V power, hitch, washable surfaces or upfit ecosystem; only a 12-volt outlet.
Roughly 400+ miles per tank and standard ACC/LKAS help, but road noise and a busy 2.0L at speed sap long-haul calm.
FWD-only, low ground clearance and no tow rating keep it pavement-bound; roof-rack accessories are the main outdoor provision.
Good-sized trunk, but the Sport's one-piece rear seatback and sedan opening limit bulky gear; 60/40 split arrives at EX.
9Driving ExperienceOne of the Civic's strongest categories.2.86B-
Class-leading chassis balance with strong grip on the Sport's 18-inch tires.
Accurate, well-weighted steering with real road feel for the class.
Short, consistent stops and a firm, responsive pedal.
CVT is well calibrated with stepped-shift logic, but the 158-hp 2.0L feels lethargic when pushed.
The 2.0L gets buzzy at high rpm and drones through the CVT under hard throttle; smooth at cruise.
The Sport's wider 235/40R18 tires enlarge the turning circle versus LX/EX.
Low, well-placed seat, tilt/telescopic wheel, excellent forward visibility and physical climate knobs; only manual height adjustment on the Sport.
Nimble, communicative chassis makes it one of the more enjoyable non-performance compacts, held back by the lackluster 2.0L.
10Value & Market PositionOne of the Civic's strongest categories.3.04B
The $25,045 LX includes Honda Sensing, LED headlights, a 7-inch touchscreen with wired Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, and automatic climate control. Heated seats, a sunroof, blind-spot monitoring and the 9-inch screen require the EX or Touring, and the Elantra and Forte show more visible content for less.
The gas trims are fairly priced given the Civic's refinement, handling and resale value. Without a hybrid in 2024, though, the Corolla Hybrid and Elantra Hybrid offered far better efficiency per dollar, and the Elantra and Sentra undercut it on sticker.
There are four sedan trims (LX, Sport, EX, Touring) with two engines (2.0L, 1.5T), plus the hatchback, Si and Type R. However, 2024 had no hybrid and no AWD, and the Si and Type R are manual-only.
US volume rebounded strongly in 2024, making the Civic one of the two best-selling compact cars alongside the Corolla even as the sedan market shrank.
Honda's mainstream brand equity rests on reliability and resale value. The Si and Type R halo models give the Civic rare enthusiast credibility.
Incentives were modest: promotional APR, $500 college-graduate and military offers, and occasional seasonal lease specials. Supply recovered in 2024, so discounts beat 2022–23 but stayed thinner than on the Sentra, Jetta or Forte.
2024 is the third year of the 11th generation, which launched for 2022, and is a carry-over before the 2025 mid-cycle refresh. A buyer gets a current platform but faces a refresh one year later that added the hybrid and new styling.
The Civic made Car and Driver's 10Best for 2024, its 10th win and the third straight for the 11th generation. It was also an IIHS Top Safety Pick and remains the benchmark in compact comparison tests.
