The verdict
A struggling compact sedan, strong on ownership and held back by performance.
The 2017 Jetta is a roomy, comfortable compact sedan with a frugal turbo engine and a low price: $18,715 to start, $22,815 for the volume SE, and big discounts were common. You get an adult-sized back seat, a 15.7 cu ft trunk, 38 MPG on the highway and a composed ride. Against that, its 150 hp is modest, the tech and driver aids are dated, and warranty coverage is the industry minimum. It makes sense as a value-minded used buy, but newer rivals are safer bets on equipment and long-term dependability.
Jump to scoresStrengths
- Back seat and trunk you can actually use
- Efficient on regular gas

What holds it back

Detailed scoring by subject
1Performance & PowertrainThe Jetta's lowest-graded category.0.00F
MY2017 is a carry-over year of the sixth-generation (A6) Jetta, which launched for 2011 and was replaced by the A7 for 2019. The volume S and SE trims use the 150-hp 1.4T, which is modest for the class.
184 lb-ft from 1,400 rpm is strong for a mainstream compact base engine and well above the ~130–140 lb-ft of naturally aspirated rivals.
Instrumented tests of the unchanged 1.4T in this generation cluster around 7.6–8.2 s, with Consumer Reports' slower ~9.2 s an outlier. About 8 s is adequate but unremarkable for the class.
The 1.4T pulls with early, flat torque and cruises quietly, which beats the buzzy naturally aspirated engines in most rivals. Some turbo lag from rest and thin top-end pull keep it below 70.
A conventional 6-speed torque-converter automatic (a 5-speed manual on the base S) avoids the CVT drone of most rivals, but it is slow to kick down. The 5-speed manual is a gear short of the class norm.
Every 2017 US Jetta, GLI included, is front-wheel drive; 4Motion is not offered.
Three gas engines are offered (the 150-hp 1.4T, the 170-hp 1.8T and the 210-hp 2.0T GLI) with manual, automatic and DSG transmissions. The Jetta Hybrid ended after 2016 and the TDI diesel was withdrawn, so 2017 has no electrified or diesel option.
2Efficiency & RangeMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.84C-
The volume 1.4T automatic is EPA-rated 32 MPG combined, which is competitive for a non-hybrid compact sedan of this era.
28 MPG city is solid for a gas compact without hybrid assistance.
The low-rpm torque of the 1.4T delivers 38 MPG on the highway with the automatic, near the top of non-hybrid compact sedans.
A 14.5-gallon tank gives about 464 miles of combined-cycle range for the 1.4T automatic.
The EPA's current-price annual estimate for the 1.4T automatic is $2,100, which is middle of the pack for gas compacts.
Every 2017 Jetta configuration, including the GLI, is EPA-rated on regular unleaded.
3SafetyGrades below the middle of the scale.1.38D
The 2017 Jetta is a carry-over year of the sixth-generation (A6) car, and NHTSA rates it 5 stars overall with 4-star frontal and rollover subscores.
Good in driver-side small overlap, moderate overlap, side, roof and head restraints with an Acceptable passenger-side small overlap; it earned a 2017 Top Safety Pick+, but only with optional Front Assist and the HID headlights fitted to top trims, not the volume configuration.
Only a rearview camera is standard on the base S; Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Traffic Alert arrives on mid trims, while Front Assist AEB and adaptive cruise are optional packages, and no lane departure warning or lane keeping exists on any trim.
With optional Front Assist the Jetta earns an IIHS Advanced vehicle-to-vehicle rating, a notch below Superior, with no pedestrian detection; volume trims without the package have no AEB.
Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Traffic Alert is offered from mid trims upward but is alert-only, with no braking intervention, safe-exit alert or surround camera.
The A6 Jetta offers no lane departure warning, lane keeping or lane centering on any 2017 trim; Lane Assist arrived only with the 2019 redesign.
Adaptive Cruise Control is available only in an optional Driver Assistance Package on upper trims, without stop-and-go or highway assist; most volume Jettas use conventional cruise.
No hands-free driving system, nor any lane-centering assist, is offered on the 2017 Jetta.
Volume S/SE/SEL trims use halogen reflectors rated Marginal; only the SEL Premium and Sport with Lighting package get curve-adaptive HID projectors rated Acceptable, and no trim reaches Good.
The conventional three-box body with a tall greenhouse, upright rear glass and fairly slim pillars gives good natural sightlines; a rearview camera is standard but no surround-view camera exists.
IIHS rates LATCH ease of use only Marginal, with two full LATCH positions and a tether-only center seat; the roomy rear seat helps with rear-facing seats.
4Space & ComfortOne of the Jetta's strongest categories.2.25C
MY2017 is a carry-over year of the sixth-generation (A6) Jetta (2011–2018). Every trim seats five.
The volume SE comes with a sunroof, and its 38.2 in of headroom is mid-pack for a compact sedan.
Front legroom is slightly below most rivals; the A6 Jetta's packaging favors the rear seat.
Rear headroom is adequate for adults and in line with the Corolla and Civic.
At 38.1 in, rear legroom is among the best in the compact class. The NCS-generation Jetta was deliberately stretched for a larger back seat, and reviewers call it adult-friendly.
A 15.7 cu ft trunk is large for a compact sedan, ahead of the Corolla (13.0) and Mazda3 sedan (12.4).
Storage is conventional: door pockets, a small center bin, cupholders and a ski pass-through on SE and up. There is nothing innovative and the console is smallish next to the 2016 Civic's.
The rear bench is roomy and comfortable for adults, but the front seats are firm and flat, and reviewers say rivals have better front seats. The SE's V-Tex leatherette seats are manually adjusted.
The ride is well damped and composed, with a German firmness that stays compliant over rough roads. That is among the better rides of the 2017 compact class, though the 1.4T's twist-beam rear axle is less polished than the Civic's multi-link.
The cabin is quiet at a steady highway cruise, helped by low-rpm turbo torque, but the 1.4T gets loud under hard throttle and road noise is average.
Heated front seats are standard from the SE, and dual-zone Climatronic arrives on the SEL. There are no ventilated seats, heated wheel, heated rear seats or remote start on any trim.
5Cost of OwnershipThe Jetta's best-graded category.2.51C+
The 2017 Jetta S (a carry-over year for the sixth-generation A6, with the 150-hp 1.4T) starts under $19k including destination, which puts it among the cheapest compact sedans of its year.
The 1.4T SE automatic is the volume Jetta. It adds blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, keyless access and heated front seats over the S at a price in line with a Civic LX/EX or Corolla LE.
The 2017 model year had only the 3-year/36,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty, so years four and five carry real repair exposure. The projected total sits above the Civic and Corolla and near the compact-segment middle.
Projections made when the car was new expected heavy depreciation (about 38% retained). Its fifth year then fell in the 2022 used-car price spike, which lifted realized resale. Both cases still trail the Civic and Corolla.
The 2017 model year predates VW's 6-year/72,000-mile People First Warranty (MY2018–2020). It carried the industry-minimum 3/36 basic coverage, matching Honda and Toyota and trailing Hyundai and Kia's 5/60.
5/60 powertrain coverage is the mainstream norm and the bottom of the band, half of Hyundai and Kia's 10/100.
VW Carefree Maintenance covered only the first scheduled service (1 year/10,000 miles), plus 3 years/36,000 miles of 24/7 roadside assistance. Prepaid VW Care plans were extra. That is a basic package, behind ToyotaCare's 2 years and roughly level with Honda and Mazda.
$22,815 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (49% retained, or about $11,179) leaves about $11,636 in depreciation. Add the projected $4,850 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $16,486 in total.
6Reliability & QualityMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.94C-
2017 was a carry-over year late in the sixth-generation (A6, 2011–2018) run, so most launch faults had been worked out. J.D. Power rates its quality 86/100 ('Great'), and Consumer Reports calls it about average for its model year. That is a little better than CR's below-average verdict on the 2018, so it scores slightly above it, but still mid-band.
Through the late 2010s Volkswagen sat in the lower third of the Consumer Reports brand-reliability rankings and below the industry average in J.D. Power's Vehicle Dependability Study. This is a brand-level judgment and is held identical across VWs in the dataset.
Two large campaigns matter for safety. Loose fuel-rail bolts can leak fuel, a fire risk, and silicate residue on the shifter switch can let the key come out when the car is not in Park, so it may roll away. The other 2017 campaigns are tire-placard and VIN-label corrections, plus a 2-unit engine campaign. Recall activity is typical, with nothing repeated or systemic.
The volume S/SE trims use the 1.4L TSI (EA211, 150 hp) with a 6-speed Aisin torque-converter automatic, which avoids the dry-clutch DSG and has a solid record. Known EA211 water-pump/thermostat-housing leaks, carbon buildup from direct injection and the fuel-rail bolt recall keep it in the mid band.
The A6 Jetta's US cabin was famously decontented: VW downgraded the trim materials, used leatherette rather than leather, and covered much of the cabin in hard plastic. The 2015 refresh restored some soft-touch surfaces, but the car trailed newer rivals, and J.D. Power owners named the feel of interior materials among their early complaints.
This mature, Puebla-built generation was assembled consistently by this point in its run. J.D. Power's 86/100 quality score points to solid initial quality, with the reported 90-day complaints concerning engine/exhaust sound and HVAC rather than assembly defects.
Volkswagen has roughly 600-650 US dealers, about half Toyota's count, which leaves gaps in rural markets, and its service satisfaction is mid-pack. Metro coverage is adequate.
High-volume A6 production on PQ35 mechanicals gives it abundant parts and broad independent-shop familiarity, though VW parts still cost more than Japanese or Korean equivalents. MY2017 predates VW's 6-yr/72k-mi transferable warranty, which started with MY2018, so it scores a point below the 2018.
7Technology & InfotainmentOne of the Jetta's weakest categories.0.05F
The volume SE has the 6.3-in capacitive MIB II Composition Media screen, small by later standards but competitive in 2017. The base S has a 5-in resistive unit.
MIB II was quick and logically laid out for its era, with physical volume/tune knobs and shortcut buttons and a proximity sensor that reveals menus. The small screen and dated graphics hold it back.
Wired CarPlay/Android Auto (App-Connect) is standard from the SE up but absent on the base S. Wireless projection was not offered on any trim.
Native navigation comes only on the SEL and GLI (Discover Media, 6.3-in screen). Voice control is basic command-based Bluetooth voice, and most owners will use phone projection instead.
The base six-speaker system is ordinary, but the Fender Premium Audio upgrade (400 W, nine speakers plus a trunk subwoofer) is a respected branded system. It is limited to the SEL and GLI.
Every 2017 Jetta has analog gauges with a small multifunction display between them. A digital cockpit first appeared on the 2019 A7 Jetta.
MIB II has no over-the-air software capability. Map and firmware updates need a dealer visit or SD card/USB.
Car-Net Security & Service on SE and up offers remote lock/unlock, horn/flash, last-parked location and vehicle health reports, but it is subscription-based after a trial. There is no remote start and no digital key.
There is a single front USB-A port (MIB II) plus 12V outlets. No USB-C, no rear USB and no wireless charging.
KESSY proximity entry with push-button start is standard on the volume SE and above; the base S uses a flip key. Neither remote start nor phone-as-key was offered.
A rearview camera is standard. Park Distance Control is available on upper trims (standard on the GLI), and no surround-view or automated parking was offered.
No head-up display was offered on any 2017 Jetta trim.
8Use-Case FitOne of the Jetta's weakest categories.1.36D
A class-leading 38.1-in rear legroom and a 15.7 cu ft trunk make rear-facing seats and strollers easy for a compact. IIHS rates LATCH usability only Marginal, however.
Crash results are strong: NHTSA 5-star overall and IIHS Good in most tests. But the Top Safety Pick+ applies only with optional Front Assist and HID lights, and the volume SE has blind-spot monitoring but no standard AEB.
Adult-sized rear room, a large trunk and a ~460-mile highway-friendly range make the Jetta a capable family tourer for a compact. Rear amenities (USB, heated seats, separate climate) are thin.
Low-rpm turbo torque (184 lb-ft from 1,400 rpm), a conventional 6-speed automatic and a composed ride make it relaxed in traffic. Some turbo lag from a stop is the main annoyance.
32 MPG combined on regular gas with a $2,100/yr EPA fuel cost is right at the class norm. Consumables are cheap, though VW dealer service runs above Toyota and Honda.
A 36.4-ft turning circle, good outward visibility and a standard rear camera make it easy in town. Parking sensors are limited to upper trims and the body is fairly long for the class.
It is a front-drive compact sedan with no US tow rating, so it is not a work vehicle beyond carrying small tools in the large trunk.
The A6 Jetta saw only modest fleet use and VW's reliability record is middling. Leatherette upholstery wears well, but the turbo/direct-injection powertrain is less proven under abuse than a Corolla's.
There are no work-oriented provisions: no onboard power, no tie-down system and no upfit ecosystem.
Highway range of roughly 460–550 miles (38 MPG highway), a stable, quiet cruise and a roomy rear seat suit long trips. Firm front seats, and adaptive cruise only as an option, keep it a good rather than great tourer.
Front-wheel drive only, with low ground clearance and no factory tow rating. It is limited to graded gravel and roof-rack accessories.
The trunk is large for a sedan and has a pass-through on SE and up. The sedan opening still limits bulky items, and there are no roof rails or factory hitch.
9Driving ExperienceOne of the Jetta's strongest categories.2.48C+
It is composed and planted in corners, with sportier handling than most mainstream rivals. The torsion-beam rear on the 1.4T trims leaves it behind the Civic and Mazda3, while the GLI is sharper.
The steering is tight, well weighted and responsive, though the electric rack offers modest feedback.
The pedal is firm and progressive, but the 1.4T S/SE trims use rear drum brakes (discs all round on the 1.8T and GLI). Stopping distances are class-average.
The 1.4T delivers flat, early torque through a conventional 6-speed automatic rather than a CVT, which feels natural. There is some turbo lag from rest and the automatic is slow to kick down.
It is quiet and low-revving at cruise but coarse and loud when worked hard.
The 36.4-ft turning diameter is about average for a compact sedan.
The driving position is upright and logical, with a tilt/telescope wheel, good outward visibility and clear analog gauges with knob-and-button infotainment. The front seats are manually adjusted on the SE, and front legroom (41.2 in) is a bit short for tall drivers.
The 'German' balance and torquey turbo give the volume 1.4T some character, but it is more competent than exciting. The GLI is the enthusiast's pick.
10Value & Market PositionMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.07C
Even the S comes with a rearview camera, Bluetooth and a touchscreen with App-Connect (CarPlay/Android Auto), which several rivals still lacked in 2017. Forward-collision warning/AEB was only optional on upper trims, while the Corolla had Toyota Safety Sense standard.
A turbocharged, well-built sedan starting at $18,715 and $22,815 for the volume SE is fair value. Heavy discounting in 2017 made transaction prices sharper still. It is held back by a dated cabin and a short 3/36 warranty against the 2016 Civic's newer package.
Six trims (S, Wolfsburg Edition, SE, SEL, Sport, GLI) span three turbo engines from 150 to 210 hp, with manual gearboxes on the S, SE and GLI, a well-spaced ladder from about $18.7k to $29.8k. There is no hybrid (the Jetta Hybrid ended in 2016) and no AWD.
Volkswagen's best-selling US model, but at 115,807 units it sold less than a third of the Civic or Corolla, and volume was falling year after year.
In 2017 VW's US image was still recovering from the 2015 diesel-emissions scandal, and its reliability reputation trailed the Japanese brands. A residual 'German engineering' appeal remained, along with a loyal GLI following.
With an aging model, falling sales and VW still rebuilding after Dieselgate, buyers commonly got large cash rebates and cheap financing on the 2017 Jetta, which drove transaction prices well below MSRP.
MY2017 is the seventh year of the A6 generation (introduced for 2011, mid-cycle refresh for 2015). The all-new MQB-based seventh-generation Jetta arrived for 2019, so 2017 buyers faced an imminent redesign.
Reviewers consistently praised the solid build, roomy rear seat, big trunk and torquey 1.4T. Rankings placed it mid-pack, and it was not a comparison-test winner against the newer Civic, Mazda3 and Elantra.
