The verdict
A struggling compact sedan, strong on ownership and held back by performance.
The 2018 Jetta is the final year of a generation that launched for 2011. It is cheap to buy and own: the entry price is about $19,540, and it was the first year of VW's transferable 6-year/72,000-mile warranty. You also get a roomy back seat, a 15.7 cu ft trunk and 38 MPG on the highway from regular gas. Against that, the tech is old (a 5–6.3-inch screen, analog gauges, no lane-keeping on any trim), the steering is numb and the base 150-hp engine is unremarkable. It makes sense as a comfortable, frugal commuter bought at a run-out discount, but newer rivals are better equipped.
Jump to scoresStrengths
- Low price and a long warranty
- Strong crash-test results
- Frugal on regular gas
What holds it back
- Dated cabin tech
- Modest performance and no AWD
- Thin driver assistance

Detailed scoring by subject
1Performance & PowertrainThe Jetta's lowest-graded category.0.00F
MY2018 is the last US year of the sixth-generation (A6) Jetta, launched for 2011 and replaced by the A7 for 2019. The volume S/SE trims use the 150-hp 1.4T, which is modest for the class.
184 lb-ft arriving low in the rev range is strong for a mainstream compact base engine and well above naturally aspirated rivals' ~130–140 lb-ft.
Instrumented tests of the 1.4T automatic in this generation cluster around 7.6–8.2 s, with Consumer Reports' slower 9.2 s an outlier. About 8 s is adequate but unremarkable for the class.
The 1.4T pulls with early, flat torque and cruises quietly, which beats the buzzy naturally aspirated engines in most rivals. Some turbo lag from rest and thin top-end pull keep it below 70.
A conventional 6-speed torque-converter automatic (a 5-speed manual on the base S) avoids the CVT drone of most rivals, but it is slow to kick down. The 5-speed manual is a gear short of the class norm.
Every 2018 US Jetta, GLI included, is front-wheel drive; 4Motion is not offered.
Three gas engines are offered (the 150-hp 1.4T, the 170-hp 1.8T and the 210-hp 2.0T GLI) with manual, automatic and DSG transmissions. The Jetta Hybrid was dropped after 2016, so no electrified option remains.
2Efficiency & RangeMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.84C-
The volume 1.4T automatic is EPA-rated 32 MPG combined, which is competitive for a non-hybrid compact sedan of this era.
28 MPG city is solid for a gas compact without hybrid assistance.
The low-rpm torque of the 1.4T delivers 38 MPG on the highway with the automatic, near the top of non-hybrid compact sedans.
A 14.5-gallon tank, larger than the later A7's 13.2 gallons, gives about 464 miles of combined-cycle range.
The EPA's current-price annual estimate for the 1.4T automatic is $2,100, which is middle of the pack for gas compacts.
Every 2018 Jetta configuration, including the GLI, is EPA-rated on regular unleaded.
3SafetyGrades below the middle of the scale.1.31D
The 2018 Jetta is the final carry-over year of the sixth-generation (A6) car before the 2019 redesign, and NHTSA rates it 5 stars overall with 4-star frontal and rollover subscores.
Good in driver-side small overlap, moderate overlap, side, roof strength (5.35 SWR) and head restraints, with an Acceptable passenger-side small overlap; Marginal headlights on every trim keep it from a 2018 Top Safety Pick.
Only a rearview camera is standard on the base S, Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Traffic Alert arrives from the SE, and Front Assist AEB and adaptive cruise sit in an optional Driver Assistance Package; no lane departure warning or lane keeping is offered on any trim.
With the optional Front Assist the Jetta earns an IIHS Advanced vehicle-to-vehicle rating, a notch below Superior, and there is no pedestrian detection; the volume trims without the package have no AEB at all.
Blind Spot Monitor and Rear Traffic Alert are standard from the volume SE upward and packaged on lower trims, but they are alert-only with no braking intervention, safe-exit alert or surround camera.
The A6 Jetta offers no lane departure warning, lane keeping or lane centering on any 2018 trim; Lane Assist arrived only with the 2019 redesign.
Adaptive Cruise Control is available only in the optional Driver Assistance Package, without stop-and-go capability, and there is no integrated highway assist; most volume Jettas use conventional cruise.
No hands-free driving system, nor any hands-on lane-centering assist, is offered on the 2018 Jetta.
Every trim uses the same halogen reflector headlights with no curve adaptation or high-beam assist, rated Marginal by IIHS, with weak left-side and sharp-curve reach and glare on right curves.
The A6 Jetta's conventional three-box body with a tall greenhouse, upright rear glass and fairly slim pillars gives good natural sightlines; a rearview camera is standard and park sensors are optional, but no surround-view camera exists.
IIHS rates LATCH ease of use only Marginal, with two full LATCH positions and a tether-only center seat; the rear seat is roomy for the class, which helps rear-facing seats, but anchors are hard to use.
4Space & ComfortOne of the Jetta's strongest categories.2.25C
Like every compact sedan, the 2018 Jetta seats five on all trims, with a 60/40 split-folding rear bench.
38.2 in of front headroom is mid-pack for a compact sedan of this era, and the sunroof that is standard from the SE takes away a little of it.
41.2 in is adequate but slightly below class leaders like the Civic (42.3 in) and Elantra.
The A6 Jetta's upright, conventional roofline leaves 37.1 in of rear headroom, more than fastback rivals such as the Civic.
The North American A6 Jetta was stretched on a dedicated body for rear-seat room, and 38.1 in is near the top of the 2018 compact class.
A 15.7 cu ft trunk is large for a compact sedan, bigger than the 2018 Corolla's 13.0 and close to the Civic's 15.1.
It has ordinary compact-sedan storage: door bins, a small console bin under the front armrest, cupholders and a 60/40 split-folding rear seat with a pass-through. There are no clever extras and only one USB port.
Reviewers found the front seats supportive and comfortable, and the rear bench is roomy enough for adults. The volume S and SE trims have manual seats, though, and the cushions are on the firm side.
The ride is well damped and composed, a bit firm but never harsh; North American cars lost the multi-link rear suspension for a torsion beam, which shows over sharp bumps.
Reviewers disagree. Some found wind and road noise well suppressed at cruise, while others called cabin noise a weakness, so it is about average for the class.
Heated front seats come on the Wolfsburg Edition and SE and up, and dual-zone Climatronic is on the SEL. There are no ventilated seats, no heated steering wheel, no rear climate controls and no remote pre-conditioning.
5Cost of OwnershipThe Jetta's best-graded category.3.34B+
2018 was the final model year of the sixth-generation (A6) Jetta, and the entry S kept a sub-$20k sticker with destination, among the cheapest compact sedans of its year.
The 1.4T SE (with the new-for-2018 Wolfsburg Edition just below it) is the volume configuration, priced comparably to a Civic LX/EX or Corolla LE/SE of the same year.
Repairs fall under the 6-year/72,000-mile warranty throughout the first five years, but only the first scheduled service is complimentary; the total lands near the compact-sedan average, consistent with the mechanically similar 1.4T Jetta of later years.
The 2018 Jetta hit its five-year mark during the 2021–23 used-car price spike, which flattered retention, but as the last year of an outgoing generation it trails Civic, Corolla and Mazda3 on resale.
MY2018 was the first year of VW's 'People First' 6-year/72,000-mile transferable warranty — longer than Hyundai/Kia's 5/60 and double the 3/36 from Honda, Toyota and Mazda.
There is no separate longer powertrain term: engine and transmission are covered by the 6-year/72,000-mile limited warranty, which beats the 5/60 Japanese norm but falls well short of Hyundai/Kia's 10/100.
Carefree Maintenance covers only the first scheduled service (1 year/10,000 miles), plus 3 years/36,000 miles of roadside assistance and a Car-Net trial — a basic package, behind ToyotaCare's 2-year plan and ahead of Honda and Mazda.
$23,140 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (52% retained, or about $12,033) leaves about $11,107 in depreciation. Add the projected $4,300 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $15,407 in total.
6Reliability & QualityMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.90C-
2018 was the last year of the sixth-generation (A6) Jetta, which had been in production since 2011, so its known faults had largely been sorted. J.D. Power rates its quality highly at 86/100 ('Great'), but Consumer Reports calls it less reliable than other 2018 cars. With the two sources disagreeing it lands mid-band, above the launch-year 2019 A7 (50).
In the Consumer Reports brand-reliability rankings and J.D. Power's Vehicle Dependability Study, Volkswagen has sat in the lower third, below the industry average, through the late 2010s. This is a brand-level judgment and is held identical across VWs in the dataset.
MY2018 has only two VW-issued campaigns, though both are safety-relevant and large. Loose fuel-rail bolts can leak fuel, a fire risk, and a build-up of residue can stop the shifter detecting Park, so the car may roll away. The third listed campaign is an aftermarket brake master cylinder, not a factory defect. Recall activity is typical, with nothing repeated or systemic.
The volume S/SE trims use the 1.4L TSI (EA211, 150 hp) with a 6-speed Aisin torque-converter automatic, which avoids the dry-clutch DSG and has a solid record. Known EA211 water-pump/thermostat-housing leaks, carbon buildup from direct injection and the fuel-rail bolt recall keep it in the mid band.
The A6 Jetta's US cabin was famously decontented: VW downgraded the trim materials, used leatherette rather than leather, and covered much of the cabin in hard plastic. The 2015 refresh restored some soft-touch surfaces, but by 2018 the car trailed newer rivals.
By its final year this mature, Puebla-built generation had consistent assembly. J.D. Power's 86/100 quality score and the lack of build-quality trouble spots in Consumer Reports' data both point to solid initial quality, unlike the 2019 launch year.
Volkswagen has roughly 600-650 US dealers, about half Toyota's count, which leaves gaps in rural markets, and its service satisfaction is mid-pack. Metro coverage is adequate.
Eight model years of high-volume A6 production on PQ35 mechanicals give it abundant parts and broad independent-shop familiarity, though VW parts still cost more than Japanese or Korean equivalents. MY2018 was the first year of VW's 6-yr/72k-mi transferable warranty.
7Technology & InfotainmentOne of the Jetta's weakest categories.0.27F
The volume SE has a 6.3-in Composition Media screen and the S and Wolfsburg have a 5-in Composition Color unit; both are small even by 2018 standards.
The MIB II system is logical and quick for its time, with physical knobs and buttons. The small 5–6.3-in screens look dated and cramped next to rivals' 7–8-in displays.
Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come only wired, through App-Connect on the SE and above. The base S and Wolfsburg Edition lack it, and no trim is wireless.
Native Discover Media navigation with basic command-style voice control appears only on the SEL and GLI, on a 6.3-in screen; most owners rely on phone projection.
The base system is a thin four-speaker setup on the S, but the available 400-watt Fender premium system with subwoofer is well regarded for the class.
Every trim of the A6 Jetta uses analog gauges with a small multifunction display; the Digital Cockpit arrived only with the 2019 A7.
The 2018 MIB II system has no over-the-air updates; software and map updates require a dealer visit or SD card.
Car-Net Security & Service, on SE and up by subscription, offers remote lock/unlock, honk/flash, vehicle locate and vehicle-health reports through an app, but no remote climate or digital key.
There is a single USB-A port up front, no USB-C, no rear USB and no wireless charging on any trim, only 12V outlets.
KESSY proximity entry with push-button start is standard from the volume SE, while the S and Wolfsburg use a flip key. There is no phone-as-key.
A low-resolution rearview camera is standard. Front and rear ParkPilot sensors come only in the Driver Assistance Package, and there is no surround view or automated parking.
No head-up display is offered on any 2018 Jetta trim.
8Use-Case FitOne of the Jetta's weakest categories.1.13D
Generous rear legroom (38.1 in) and a big trunk make rear-facing seats and strollers workable for a compact. LATCH anchors are rated Marginal for ease of use, and the center seat has a tether only.
Crash ratings are good (NHTSA 5-star overall, IIHS Good in most tests), but AEB and adaptive cruise are optional packages and there is no lane-keeping. Headlights are Marginal and there is no rear-seat reminder.
Adult-sized rear room and a 15.7 cu ft trunk handle a family of four's luggage. Rear amenities are thin: no rear vents on lower trims, no rear USB and no rear heated seats.
The 1.4T's low-rev torque makes it easy in traffic and the ride is composed. Some turbo lag from rest, vague steering and no stop-and-go cruise keep it short of effortless.
32 MPG combined on regular fuel is competitive for a non-hybrid compact, at about $2,100 a year in fuel, though typical VW maintenance and parts cost a bit more than Japanese rivals.
A compact footprint, good sightlines from the upright greenhouse and a 36.4-ft turning circle make it easy in town. Only a basic rear camera is standard, and parking sensors are optional.
VW does not tow-rate the US Jetta, and a compact sedan's trunk is no work tool beyond carrying small tools or samples.
The A6 Jetta was a simple, cost-reduced design and the 1.4T is reasonably robust, but VW reliability perception lags, and the car has no fleet-duty pedigree or wear-friendly upholstery beyond leatherette.
It has a pass-through 60/40 rear seat and trunk tie-down hooks but no onboard power, hitch or upfit ecosystem.
A 14.5-gal tank and 38 MPG highway give more than 460 miles of combined-cycle range, and the seats and ride are good for long stints. There is no lane-keeping, adaptive cruise is optional, and cabin noise draws mixed reviews.
With front-wheel drive only, low ground clearance, no tow rating and no outlets, it is pavement-bound beyond graded gravel, though VW roof bars can carry a bike or box.
The trunk is large for a sedan and the rear seat folds 60/40, but the sedan opening limits bulky items, and there are no roof rails or hitch.
9Driving ExperienceMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.87C-
It is secure and predictable, but the torsion-beam rear axle and eco tires (0.83 g skidpad) leave it unremarkable next to the Civic and Mazda3; the GLI is the sharp version.
Edmunds singled out the steering as among the worst in the class: elastic, with dead play on center and scarce feedback.
A 184-ft stop from 70 mph is middling and partly down to the low-rolling-resistance tires; pedal feel is linear and fine in everyday use.
The 1.4T delivers a broad, flat torque curve through a smooth conventional six-speed automatic. Some turbo lag from a stop and thin top-end pull are the only real flaws.
The small turbo-four is hushed at cruise thanks to low revs, but gets a bit coarse when pushed hard.
At 36.4 ft, the turning circle is typical for a compact sedan.
A tilt-and-telescoping wheel, height-adjustable seat, logical physical controls and an upright greenhouse with good sightlines make for an easy driving position. Volume trims have manual seats.
The torquey turbo engine helps, but numb steering and soft, eco-tired handling make the volume Jetta an appliance; enthusiasts are directed to the GLI.
10Value & Market PositionOne of the Jetta's strongest categories.2.10C
Even the S has a turbocharged 1.4T, touchscreen infotainment with App-Connect smartphone integration and a rearview camera, and the volume SE adds keyless access, a sunroof and heated seats. Driver-assist features were mostly confined to upper trims, though, while the 2018 Corolla had Toyota Safety Sense standard.
The Jetta was priced competitively, and buyers got a transferable 6/72 warranty and turbo engines (170-hp 1.8T at $24,140), which made it fair-to-good value. Interior materials had been cut back for this generation and its resale trails Japanese rivals.
There are six well-spaced trims (S, Wolfsburg Edition, SE, SE Sport, SEL, GLI) with three engines (1.4T, 1.8T, 2.0T GLI) and both a manual and automatic, ranging from about $19.5k to $30k. Sedan only, with no AWD or hybrid after the Hybrid was dropped in 2016.
This was still VW's best-selling US model, but its volume was well below Civic and Corolla and was falling as the A6 wound down and buyers shifted to crossovers.
VW kept its European-flavour appeal, but in 2018 its US image was still recovering from the 2015 diesel emissions scandal, and its reliability perception lagged Honda and Toyota.
As the run-out year of an outgoing generation, with the A7 Jetta revealed in January 2018, the 2018 Jetta drew heavy cash-back and low-APR clearance offers.
This was the eighth and final US model year of the A6 generation (launched for 2011, facelifted for 2015), and its replacement had already been revealed when it was on sale.
Reviewers praised its ride, efficient turbo engines and roomy rear seat but ranked it mid-pack behind the Civic, Mazda3 and Corolla, citing its dated design and cheapened cabin. It won no major awards in 2018 apart from the GLI's enthusiast appeal.
