The verdict

A struggling compact sedan, strong on ownership and held back by performance.

The 2022 Jetta was the year VW swapped in a torquier 1.5-liter turbo, and it makes for a cheap, comfortable and frugal compact sedan: about $24,900 for the volume SE, 40 MPG on the highway on regular gas, and a ride reviewers call a highlight. The trade-offs are real, though. Every trim has Poor or Marginal headlights, only the SEL gets the bigger screen and wireless phone mirroring, and the 4-year/50,000-mile warranty and below-average reliability track record trail the Civic, Corolla and Elantra. Buy one used as a sensible, well-priced commuter, not as a long-haul ownership bet.

Detailed scoring by subject

1Performance & PowertrainThe Jetta's lowest-graded category.0.23F
Horsepower
158 hp (1.5L TSI turbo-four, S/Sport/SE/SEL); GLI 2.0T 228 hp
7/100
#4 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

MY2022 is the mid-cycle refresh year: the 147-hp 1.4T was replaced by the 1.5L TSI EVO rated 158 hp across all non-GLI trims. Modest output for the class, slightly above the Civic's 150-hp base engine.

Torque
184 lb-ft @ 1,750 rpm (1.5T); GLI 258 lb-ft
19/100
#4 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

184 lb-ft from 1,750 rpm is strong low-end torque for a mainstream compact base engine, well above naturally-aspirated rivals (~130-140 lb-ft).

0–60 mph time
~7.3 s (1.5T 8-speed auto); GLI ~5.6 s
34/100
#2 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

The new 1.5T automatic reaches 60 mph in roughly 7.3 s, quicker than the 2021 1.4T and ahead of CVT-equipped Corolla/Elantra base models.

Powertrain refinement72
#3 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

The 1.5 TSI delivers early, flat torque and cruises quietly, outclassing the buzzy naturally-aspirated base engines in the segment; a beat of turbo lag from rest and cylinder-deactivation transitions keep it out of the 80s.

Transmission behavior72
#4 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

A conventional 8-speed torque-converter automatic (6-speed manual on S and Sport) avoids the CVT drone of most rivals; reviewers fault slow kickdowns and occasional low-speed harshness.

AWD/4WD availability15
#5 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Every 2022 US Jetta, including the GLI, is front-wheel drive; 4Motion is not offered on the nameplate.

Powertrain lineup breadth45
#9 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Two gas engines — the 158-hp 1.5T and the 228-hp 2.0T GLI — each with automatic and manual choices, but no hybrid, PHEV or EV option, trailing electrified rivals like the Corolla and Elantra.

NHTSA overall rating
5 stars overall (4 frontal, 5 side, 4 rollover)
100/100
#1 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

The 2022 Jetta (Mk7/A7 generation begun in 2019; 2022 is the mid-cycle update year with the new 1.5T engine and broader IQ.DRIVE availability) holds a 5-star NHTSA overall rating, with 4-star frontal and rollover subscores.

IIHS awards & crashworthiness64
#11 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Good in both small-overlap tests, moderate overlap, original side, roof strength and head restraints, with only the updated side test rated Acceptable; no 2022 Top Safety Pick award, held back chiefly by its headlights.

Standard ADAS suite breadth64
#11 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

For 2022 Front Assist AEB with pedestrian monitoring, Blind Spot Monitor and Rear Traffic Alert became standard on every trim, and the full IQ.DRIVE suite (ACC Stop & Go, Lane Assist, Travel Assist, Emergency Assist) is standard on the volume SE and the SEL; on the base S and Sport it is optional, so lane keeping and adaptive cruise are not universal.

Automatic emergency braking performance52
#13 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention rates Superior (avoids collisions at 12 and 25 mph), but daytime pedestrian AEB rates only Basic, failing the parallel-adult test, and no nighttime pedestrian rating is published.

Blind-spot & cross-traffic coverage70
#4 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Blind Spot Monitor and Rear Traffic Alert are standard on every 2022 trim (previously optional on the base S), ahead of rivals that reserve them for upper trims, but there is no safe-exit warning or surround-view camera.

Lane keeping & centering60
#8 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Lane Assist and Travel Assist lane centering arrived with IQ.DRIVE for 2022, standard on SE/SEL and optional on S/Sport; reviewers describe VW's centering as competent on clear highways with some wander on curves and faded lines.

Adaptive cruise & highway assist65
#8 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

ACC with Stop & Go combines with Travel Assist into a capable hands-on highway assist, standard on the volume SE and the SEL but optional on S and Sport, and with no lane-change assistance.

Hands-free driving availability8
#2 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

No hands-free driving system is offered; Travel Assist requires the driver's hands on the wheel at all times.

Headlight performance25
#10 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

IIHS rates the LED reflector headlights on the lower and volume trims Poor, and the SEL's LED projectors with high-beam assist only Marginal, so no 2022 Jetta has acceptable headlights.

Outward visibility72
#4 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

A conventional three-box profile with an upright greenhouse, large rear glass and relatively slim pillars gives good natural sightlines; a rearview camera is standard but no surround-view camera is offered.

Child-seat (LATCH) usability62
#9 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

IIHS rates LATCH ease of use Acceptable with two complete LATCH positions and tether anchors at all three; the roomy rear seat helps with rear-facing seats, but anchors take some digging and three-across is tight.

4Space & ComfortMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.19C

Competitive front headroom for the compact class; the 2022 refresh did not change the A7 body.

Front legroom

#13 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Front legroom trails the Civic/Elantra (42.3 in) and Sentra (44 in).

#6 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Mid-pack rear headroom for a compact sedan.

Rear legroom
37.4 in
54/100
#2 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Rear legroom is among the roomier compact sedans, on par with the Civic.

Cargo/trunk volume
14.1 cu ft (all trims)
41/100
#11 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Average compact-sedan trunk; 60/40 split-folding rear seat adds flexibility.

In-cabin storage & clever solutions56
#4 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Conventional console bin, door pockets and phone tray; wireless charging pad only on the SEL and no clever storage solutions.

Seat comfort66
#5 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Supportive front seats with a power driver seat on SE/SEL, though one reviewer found the cushions 'too flat'; rear bench fine for adults on medium trips.

Ride quality72
#2 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Comfort-biased tuning absorbs most bumps despite the torsion-beam rear; reviewers call the ride a highlight.

Cabin quietness66
#3 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Quiet for a compact at highway speed; the new 1.5T is hushed at cruise, with some tire noise over coarse pavement.

Climate & comfort features58
#3 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

SE adds heated front seats and dual-zone automatic climate; ventilated leather seats, heated rear seats and the sunroof are SEL-only, and S/Sport are sparse.

5Cost of OwnershipThe Jetta's best-graded category.3.13B
Base MSRP
$21,290 (S manual, incl. $1,095 destination); $22,090 S automatic
100/100
#1 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

MY2022 is the mid-cycle refresh year of the seventh-generation Jetta (1.5L TSI replaces the 1.4T); the S still starts near the bottom of the compact-sedan class, under the Civic and Mazda3.

Volume-Trim Price
$24,890 (SE automatic, incl. $1,095 destination; Sport $22,990 auto, SEL $28,890)
97/100
#9 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

The SE is the volume Jetta, adding IQ.DRIVE, sunroof, heated seats and keyless access, and undercuts a comparably equipped Civic EX or Corolla XLE.

5-Year Maintenance & Repair Cost
~$3,700 over 5 years (SE 1.5T 8A, est.)
82/100
#2 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Same 1.5T/8-speed drivetrain and Carefree Maintenance as the 2023, so the 5-year total sits at the low end for compact sedans; costs rise in years 4–5 once coverage lapses.

5-Year Resale Value Retention
~55% of MSRP retained after 5 yr (projected)
67/100
#11 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Bought at the peak of the 2022 used-car bubble, the Jetta has held value reasonably but trails the Civic and Corolla; 5-year retention projects to the mid-50s.

Basic warranty
4 yr / 50,000 mi bumper-to-bumper
50/100
#3 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Beats the 3-yr/36k-mi coverage from Honda, Toyota and Mazda but trails Hyundai/Kia's 5-yr/60k-mi term.

Powertrain warranty
4 yr / 50,000 mi (no separate longer powertrain term)
0/100
#4 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

VW has offered no standalone powertrain warranty since MY2021 — the engine and transmission share the 4-yr/50k-mi limited warranty, below the 5-yr/60k-mi Japanese norm and far short of Hyundai/Kia's 10-yr/100k-mi.

Complimentary maintenance & perks68
#3 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Carefree Maintenance covers scheduled services for 2 years/20,000 miles, plus 3 years of roadside assistance and a Car-Net trial — better than Honda/Mazda, roughly on par with ToyotaCare, short of a multi-year program.

Effective 5-Year Ownership Cost
$14,900 (≈$11,200 depreciation + $3,700 maintenance)
88/100
#7 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

$24,890 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (55% retained, or about $13,690) leaves about $11,200 in depreciation. Add the projected $3,700 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $14,900 in total.

6Reliability & QualityMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.96C-
Predicted reliability56
#13 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

J.D. Power gives the 2022 Jetta 75/100 for Quality & Reliability, which is Average, and Consumer Reports rates it less reliable than the average 2022 car. Both sources put it at average to below average, so it lands in the lower half of the mid band, roughly level with the 2021 car (76) and below the 2023 car (81).

Brand reliability track record40
#13 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Volkswagen has sat in the lower third of Consumer Reports brand-reliability rankings and below the industry average in J.D. Power's Vehicle Dependability Study across recent study years. This is a brand-level judgment, so it is the same for every VW in the dataset.

Recall & TSB history72
#8 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Only one NHTSA campaign covers MY2022: a rearview-camera/infotainment software recall shared with the 2021 model and fixed with a software update. That is a lighter record than the 2021 car's four campaigns. Generation-wide TSBs for infotainment software and EA211 cooling components keep it out of the top band.

Powertrain durability reputation60
#11 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

2022 was the first model year of the 158 hp 1.5L TSI EVO (EA211 family) paired with an 8-speed torque-converter automatic. It avoids the dry-clutch DSG and has shown no systemic failures. However, it was new to the car that year, and the EA211 family has known water-pump/thermostat-housing and direct-injection carbon-buildup issues, so it sits slightly below the later 2023 car.

Interior material quality67
#6 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

The pre-facelift A7 cabin is tidy, with good switchgear feel and a standard digital cluster from MY2022. Reviewers repeatedly criticized the many hard plastics and the cost-cutting compared with earlier Jettas. It is competitive for the class but not a standout.

Fit & finish70
#9 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Puebla-built A7 Jettas are well regarded for panel alignment and solidity, and MY2022 had no assembly-defect recalls, unlike the 2021 car. J.D. Power's merely average 75/100 quality score keeps it a step below the 2023 car.

Dealer & service network55
#13 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Volkswagen's roughly 600-650 US dealers are about half Toyota's count, which leaves gaps in rural markets, and its service satisfaction is mid-pack. Metro coverage is adequate.

Parts availability & repair cost60
#12 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

The Jetta shares the MQB platform and EA211 engines with the Golf, Taos and Tiguan and has decades of US sales volume, so it has the best independent-shop familiarity and aftermarket of any VW. Parts still cost more than Japanese or Korean equivalents. The 2022 model also came with VW's 4-yr/50k-mi warranty and 2-yr/20k-mi Carefree Maintenance.

7Technology & InfotainmentOne of the Jetta's weakest categories.1.08D
Touchscreen size
6.5 in (S/Sport/SE); 8.0 in MIB3 with navigation on SEL
0/100
#8 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

The volume SE uses the small 6.5-inch Composition Color screen; only the SEL gets the 8-inch MIB3 unit.

Infotainment UX & responsiveness58
#9 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Simple menus and physical climate controls, but the 6.5-inch screen on most trims is small and dated; the SEL's 8-inch MIB3 has crisp graphics and good touch response. Settings lock out while moving.

Wireless CarPlay / Android Auto58
#4 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

CarPlay/Android Auto standard on every trim but wired on S/Sport/SE; wireless App-Connect only on the SEL.

Voice control & native navigation45
#5 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Native navigation and enhanced voice recognition come only with the SEL's MIB3; volume trims rely on phone projection.

Audio system quality52
#8 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Basic base audio (four speakers on the Sport per trim summaries); the BeatsAudio upgrade is confined to the SEL.

Digital instrument cluster78
#1 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

An 8-inch Digital Cockpit became standard on every trim with the 2022 refresh; the SEL gets the configurable 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit Pro.

OTA update capability35
#4 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

No published over-the-air software program for the 2022 Jetta; updates are dealer-performed even on the SEL's MIB3.

Companion app & remote functions55
#3 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Car-Net app offers remote lock/unlock, status and vehicle location; remote start is SEL-only for 2022 (it reached the SE for 2023); no digital key.

Charging ports & device power50
#1 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Two USB ports up front; wireless charging is SEL-only and there is no AC outlet.

Keyless & remote access56
#10 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Keyless access with push-button start on SE and SEL; S/Sport use a conventional key; remote start SEL-only; no phone-as-key.

Camera & parking aids45
#7 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Rearview camera and Rear Traffic Alert standard; no 360-degree camera or automated parking on any 2022 Jetta.

Head-up display availability10
#7 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

No head-up display is offered on any 2022 Jetta trim.

8Use-Case FitOne of the Jetta's weakest categories.1.48D
Kid & car-seat practicality60
#3 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Generous 37.4-in rear legroom helps rear-facing seats, but LATCH rates only Acceptable and a sedan trunk limits stroller-plus-gear loads.

Family safety package68
#7 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

5-star NHTSA overall, Good IIHS crash results and standard AEB/blind-spot on every trim, but IQ.DRIVE is optional on S/Sport and the volume headlights rate Poor; no TSP award.

Family road-trip comfort58
#2 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Comfortable ride and decent rear room suit four adults, but rear amenities are thin below the SEL and 14.1 cu ft caps luggage.

Daily driving ease72
#7 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

The new 1.5T's 184 lb-ft from 1,750 rpm, a smooth 8-speed automatic, a comfortable ride and ACC Stop and Go on SE/SEL make it an easy commuter; light steering helps in town.

Commuting cost efficiency72
#6 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Strong gas-compact economy on regular fuel with cheap consumables; no hybrid offered.

Parking & maneuverability70
#7 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Compact footprint, upright greenhouse and standard rear camera with Rear Traffic Alert; the 36.7-ft turning circle is average; no surround view.

Work capability15
#8 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

No US tow rating and only a 14.1 cu ft trunk; not a work vehicle.

Durability for work duty48
#4 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

The 1.5T and 8-speed automatic are mainstream hardware, but 2022 was the 1.5T's first Jetta year and the car has no fleet reputation for hard use.

Jobsite & upfit practicality15
#9 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

No onboard power, tie-down system or upfit ecosystem.

Long-distance comfort & range68
#2 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Settled, comfortable highway ride, 40 MPG highway with roughly 435 miles of range and Travel Assist on SE/SEL make it a capable tourer for a compact; flat seat cushions limit it.

Outdoor & adventure capability28
#8 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

FWD-only with low ground clearance and no tow rating; fine on graded gravel, little more.

Gear & luggage flexibility45
#10 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

14.1 cu ft trunk with a 60/40 split-folding rear seat; no roof rails or factory hitch.

9Driving ExperienceOne of the Jetta's strongest categories.2.34C+
10Value & Market PositionMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.25C
Standard equipment generosity72
#5 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

The MY2022 refresh made the digital cockpit, LED headlights, App-Connect, forward collision warning with AEB, blind-spot monitor and rear traffic alert standard on the S; the volume SE adds IQ.DRIVE adaptive cruise/lane assist, sunroof, heated seats and keyless access — competitive with Civic/Elantra at a lower price.

Feature value per dollar74
#6 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

A low entry price, a 158-hp/184 lb-ft turbo four, up to ~40+ MPG highway and a roomy back seat give strong content-for-money; cheap interior plastics and the short powertrain warranty keep it short of standout.

Trim & configuration breadth64
#9 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Four well-spaced trims (S, Sport, SE, SEL) with a 6-speed manual still offered on S and Sport, but one engine, FWD only, and the GLI sold separately.
