The verdict

A struggling compact sedan, strong on driving and held back by performance.

The facelifted 2025 Jetta is one of the cheapest ways into a well-equipped compact sedan: $23,220 buys a base S with the full IQ.DRIVE driver-assist suite, a digital cluster and wireless CarPlay. Its torquey 1.5-liter turbo and real 8-speed automatic make it smoother and nicer on the highway than most CVT rivals, and it returns 40 MPG there on regular gas. The catch comes later. It keeps only about 42% of its value after five years, VW's reliability record trails the Japanese and Korean brands, and the warranty has no longer powertrain term. It's a good buy if you shop the deal hard; it's a harder case if you keep cars for a decade.

Detailed scoring by subject

1Performance & PowertrainThe Jetta's lowest-graded category.0.08F
Horsepower
158 hp (1.5L TSI evo2, S/Sport/SE/SEL); 228 hp in the separately marketed 2.0T GLI
7/100
#7 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

MY2025 is the Mk7 (A7) facelift year: the 147-hp 1.4T was replaced by a 1.5L TSI evo2 rated 158 hp on every regular Jetta trim. That is competitive with the Civic (150 hp) and Elantra (147 hp) but low against the sedan band, which spans to performance cars.

Torque
184 lb-ft @ 1,750–4,000 rpm (1.5T); 258 lb-ft GLI
19/100
#4 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

184 lb-ft arriving low in the rev range is well above naturally aspirated rivals' ~130–140 lb-ft, which is what makes the Jetta feel stronger than its horsepower suggests.

0–60 mph time
~7.8 s (1.5T/8AT; published tests 7.5–8.4 s)
26/100
#5 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Published results for the 2025 1.5T cluster around 7.5–7.6 s, with Edmunds' 8.4 s the slow outlier; ~7.8 s is a fair midpoint and quicker than CVT-equipped Corolla/Elantra rivals.

Powertrain refinement72
#4 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

The new 1.5 TSI evo2 is torquey, quiet at cruise and avoids the buzzy high-rpm character of naturally aspirated compact rivals; mild turbo lag from rest and audible cylinder-deactivation transitions keep it out of the 80s.

Transmission behavior72
#4 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

A conventional 8-speed torque-converter automatic instead of the CVTs most rivals use — no drone and natural-feeling shifts — though reviewers fault reluctant kickdowns. The 6-speed manual was dropped from the base car for 2025.

AWD/4WD availability15
#6 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Front-wheel drive only on every 2025 Jetta trim, GLI included; 4Motion has never been offered on the US Mk7 Jetta.

Powertrain lineup breadth42
#8 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Regular Jetta trims share one powertrain (1.5T/8AT); the 2025 GLI adds a distinct 228-hp 2.0T with a 6-speed manual or 7-speed DSG. Two gas engines, no hybrid, PHEV or EV — narrower than the electrified Civic, Corolla and Elantra lineups.

2Efficiency & RangeMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.87C-
3SafetyOne of the Jetta's strongest categories.2.49C+
NHTSA overall rating
5 stars overall (4 frontal, 5 side, 4 rollover)
100/100
#1 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

The 2025 Jetta (A7/Mk7 generation, facelifted for 2025 with no structural change) carries a 5-star NHTSA overall rating, though frontal and rollover subscores are 4 stars.

IIHS awards & crashworthiness56
#10 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Good in both small-overlap tests, but only Acceptable in the updated side test and the updated moderate-overlap (rear-passenger) test has not been run, so the 2025 Jetta earns no IIHS award under current criteria.

Standard ADAS suite breadth85
#5 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

IQ.DRIVE is standard on every 2025 Jetta trim including the base S — AEB with pedestrian monitoring, Active Blind Spot Monitor, Rear Traffic Alert, Lane Assist, stop-and-go adaptive cruise and Travel Assist centering — a breadth several compact rivals reserve for higher trims.

Automatic emergency braking performance42
#12 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Front Assist rates only Marginal in IIHS pedestrian front crash prevention — it avoided a daytime child crossing at 12 mph but only partially slowed at 25 mph and failed to slow for parallel adult targets at night — and has no current vehicle-to-vehicle rating.

Blind-spot & cross-traffic coverage70
#8 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Active Blind Spot Monitor and Rear Traffic Alert are standard on every trim, placing the Jetta at the top of the availability band, but there is no safe-exit warning or surround-view camera to extend coverage.

Lane keeping & centering66
#9 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Lane Assist and Travel Assist centering are standard and competent on well-marked highways, but VW's MQB centering is commonly described as prone to wander on curves and faded lines.

Adaptive cruise & highway assist72
#9 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Full-speed-range ACC with Stop & Go is standard on every trim and pairs with Travel Assist for a coherent hands-on highway mode; no lane-change assistance and somewhat conservative gap behavior keep it below the top band.

Hands-free driving availability8
#4 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

No hands-free driving option is offered; Travel Assist requires hands on the wheel at all times.

Headlight performance32
#12 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

IIHS rates the headlights on all 2025 Jetta trims Marginal; the LED reflector units lack curve adaptation, though high-beam assist is available.

Outward visibility72
#3 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

A conventional three-box profile with an upright greenhouse, large rear glass and relatively slim pillars gives good natural sightlines; a rear camera is standard but no surround-view camera is offered.

Child-seat (LATCH) usability62
#10 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

IIHS rates LATCH Acceptable with two full LATCH positions plus a tether-only center seat; the roomy rear seat and wide doors help with rear-facing seats, but three-across is impractical.

4Space & ComfortMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.24C
Seating capacity
5 seats (all trims)
100/100
#1 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Every 2025 Jetta trim (S, Sport, SE, SEL) is a five-passenger compact sedan.

Front headroom
38.5 in (37.1 in with sunroof on SEL)
63/100
#8 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

38.5 in of front headroom is mid-pack for a compact sedan; the SEL sunroof costs about 1.4 in.

Front legroom
41.1 in
28/100
#13 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Front legroom is the Jetta's weakest interior dimension, behind the Civic and Elantra (42.3 in) and Sentra (44.0 in).

Rear headroom
37.2 in
55/100
#7 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

The upright A7 roofline gives slightly above-average rear headroom for the class.

Rear legroom
37.4 in
54/100
#3 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

37.4 in of rear legroom matches the Civic and comfortably beats the Corolla and Sentra; reviewers note the rear seat is genuinely usable on longer trips.

Cargo/trunk volume
14.1 cu ft (all trims)
41/100
#11 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

A 14.1 cu ft trunk is mid-pack for the class, with standard 60/40 split-folding rear seatbacks.

In-cabin storage & clever solutions60
#4 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

The facelift brought a slimmer center console with a covered bin and front phone tray; storage is conventional and competent but with no clever solutions, and wireless charging in the tray is SEL-only for 2025.

Seat comfort70
#3 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Front seats are firm, well-bolstered and supportive — KBB calls them spacious and supportive even for larger occupants — though CarPro finds the sport seats narrow and only the driver seat is powered (SE/SEL).

Ride quality70
#3 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Torsion-beam rear on the volume trims but well-damped; reviewers describe a smooth, comfortable commute ride that is settled at highway speed, with some firmness over sharp hits on the SEL's 18-inch wheels.

Cabin quietness60
#3 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Highway noise is moderate for the segment — better isolated than the Civic and Elantra at a cruise, but the 1.5T gets vocal under hard throttle.

Climate & comfort features68
#1 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

The 2025 refresh made dual-zone Climatronic automatic climate standard on every trim; heated front seats arrive from the Sport, and the SEL adds ventilated front seats, heated rear seats and a heated steering wheel. No rear climate zone.

5Cost of OwnershipMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.40C+
Base MSRP
$23,220 (S, incl. $1,225 destination); $21,995 before destination
96/100
#3 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

The facelifted 2025 Jetta S is one of the cheapest compact sedans on sale, landing alongside the Corolla, Elantra and K4 at the bottom of the segment price band and undercutting the Civic.

Volume-Trim Price
$27,000 (SE incl. destination; Sport $25,500, SEL $30,225)
91/100
#8 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

The SE is the volume Jetta — it adds sunroof, wireless charging, keyless access and a larger screen over the Sport — and it still prices below a comparably equipped Civic.

5-Year Maintenance & Repair Cost
~$4,840 over 5 yr ($3,612 maintenance + $1,231 repairs, KBB)
64/100
#13 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

KBB's projection puts five-year upkeep a little above the Corolla (~$3,700) and K4 (~$4,100) in this dataset — German parts and labor rates cost something, but the conventional 8-speed automatic keeps it far from premium-brand territory. Two years of Carefree Maintenance trims the early bills.

5-Year Resale Value Retention
~42% retained after 5 yr (KBB: $10,177 residual, $14,043 depreciation)
23/100
#12 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Depreciation is the Jetta's biggest ownership weakness: retaining roughly 42% after five years trails the Corolla (~61%) by nearly 20 points and the K4 (~48%) as well, giving back much of the low purchase price.

Basic warranty
4 yr / 50,000 mi bumper-to-bumper
50/100
#3 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

VW's 4-year/50,000-mile New Vehicle Limited Warranty beats the 3-year/36,000-mile coverage from Honda, Toyota, Mazda and Nissan but trails Hyundai/Kia's 5-year/60,000-mile term.

Powertrain warranty
4 yr / 50,000 mi (no separate longer powertrain term)
0/100
#4 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

There is no extended powertrain coverage — the engine and transmission are covered only by the same 4-year/50,000-mile limited warranty, below the 5-year/60,000-mile Japanese norm and well short of Hyundai/Kia's 10-year/100,000-mile term.

Complimentary maintenance & perks68
#5 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Carefree Maintenance covers the scheduled services for 2 years/20,000 miles and 24/7 roadside assistance runs 3 years/36,000 miles, plus a Car-Net trial — better than Honda's nothing-included approach, a little short of ToyotaCare's 2 yr/25,000 mi with matching roadside.

Effective 5-Year Ownership Cost
$20,503 (≈$15,660 depreciation + $4,843 maintenance)
73/100
#12 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

$27,000 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (42% retained, or about $11,340) leaves about $15,660 in depreciation. Add the projected $4,843 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $20,503 in total.

6Reliability & QualityOne of the Jetta's weakest categories.1.66D
Predicted reliability50
#13 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

The two main sources disagree sharply. Consumer Reports rates the 2025 Jetta less reliable than the average 2025 car, and puts the carried-over 2026 last in reliability among small sedans, with in-car electronics, electrical accessories and brakes the problem areas. J.D. Power's owner-reported Quality & Reliability score is a strong 82/100 ('Great'). Mixed signals like these, with the stricter source at the bottom of the class, put the car at the bottom of the average band and well under the Japanese and Korean compacts.

Brand reliability track record40
#13 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Over many years Volkswagen has ranked in the lower third of Consumer Reports' brand reliability rankings and below the industry average in J.D. Power's Vehicle Dependability Study. Electronics and infotainment are the most-cited problems. This score is kept the same for every VW in the dataset.

Recall & TSB history52
#13 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

The 2025 model year has two NHTSA recalls, and neither is trivial. The first is an instrument cluster that can go blank at startup, losing the speed display and warning lights. The second is a fire risk: transmission ground wires that may not have been connected at the factory. The fixes are simple (software, a cluster swap, a wire inspection), and neither problem is a powertrain design defect. Still, a fire-risk campaign in the first year of the refresh puts the car at the bottom of the average band.

Powertrain durability reputation60
#11 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

For 2025 the Jetta moved to the EA211 evo2 1.5L TSI (158 hp) and dropped the manual, leaving only the 8-speed torque-converter automatic. The EA211 family has a broad track record, and avoiding a dry-clutch DSG removes VW's biggest historical durability risk. The evo2 tune is new for this model year, though, and the family has known issues: carbon buildup, the water pump and thermostat housing, and the high-pressure fuel pump. The first-year ground-wire recall also involves the transmission's electrical side.

Interior material quality72
#5 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

The 2025 facelift added a standard digital cockpit and a larger freestanding touchscreen, and it freshened the dash trim. VW's switchgear still feels a step above the price. Hard plastics on the lower dash, the door bottoms and the rear panels hold it below the class's best cabins.

Fit & finish70
#13 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Reviewers consistently praise this generation's panel fit and solid structure from the Puebla plant. However, the 2025 build carried a factory-assembly defect: transmission ground wires that were never connected. It also had a cluster software failure, both in the first year of the refresh. Both pull the score down slightly from its usual solid reading.

Dealer & service network55
#13 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

VW has roughly 600–650 US dealers, about half of Toyota's count, which leaves gaps in rural areas. Service satisfaction is mid-pack.

Parts availability & repair cost58
#11 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

The Jetta shares the MQB platform and EA211 engine with the Golf and Taos and has decades of US sales volume, which gives it the deepest independent-shop and aftermarket support of any VW. Even so, VW parts cost more than Japanese or Korean equivalents. The 4-year/50,000-mile warranty is also short against Hyundai and Kia.

7Technology & InfotainmentMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.78C-
Touchscreen size
8.0 in (standard on all trims; no larger screen offered)
12/100
#5 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

The 2025 facelift standardised a floating 8-inch touchscreen across the range (up from the old 6.5-inch base unit), but no larger center display is offered — the smallest in the compact-sedan set.

Infotainment UX & responsiveness60
#10 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

The MIB3 software is quick and the graphics are praised, but the facelift moved climate to capacitive Climatronic Touch controls and touch sliders that reviewers find fiddly on the move, and the screen itself is small.

Wireless CarPlay / Android Auto88
#4 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Wireless App-Connect (Apple CarPlay and Android Auto) is standard on the 2025 Jetta, so every buyer gets cable-free phone projection.

Voice control & native navigation52
#8 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Native navigation (Discover Media) is SEL-only, so the volume SE buyer relies on phone projection; VW voice control is command-based rather than conversational.

Audio system quality52
#12 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

The base six-speaker system is ordinary, and the SEL's BeatsAudio was decontented mid-year — builds after January 1, 2025 got a six-speaker Beats system instead of the earlier nine-speaker setup — making the premium step modest.

Digital instrument cluster76
#1 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

A fully digital cluster is standard on every trim: an 8-inch Digital Cockpit with two views on S/Sport/SE, and the 10.25-inch configurable Digital Cockpit Pro (four views incl. full-screen nav) on SEL only.

OTA update capability52
#5 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

MIB3 supports over-the-air infotainment/map updates, but there is no whole-vehicle OTA program for the Jetta.

Companion app & remote functions62
#4 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

The myVW app with Car-Net offers remote lock/unlock, status and locate, and remote engine start is standard from the SE, but remote access is subscription-gated after a trial and there is no digital key.

Charging ports & device power58
#6 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

The SE gets two USB-C ports, but wireless phone charging is reserved for the SEL in 2025 and there is no AC outlet.

Keyless & remote access66
#6 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

KESSY keyless access with push-button start and remote start arrive at the volume SE; the S and Sport use a conventional key and there is no phone-as-key.

Camera & parking aids50
#5 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

A rearview camera is standard, with park distance sensors only on upper trims; no 360-degree camera or automated parking on any 2025 Jetta.

Head-up display availability15
#4 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

No head-up display is offered on any 2025 Jetta trim.

8Use-Case FitOne of the Jetta's weakest categories.1.54D
Kid & car-seat practicality66
#3 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Rear legroom of 37.4 in and an upright roofline with wide door openings make installing child seats easy, and the 14.1 cu ft trunk takes a stroller, but IIHS rates LATCH only Acceptable with two complete positions.

Family safety package68
#9 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

The full IQ.DRIVE suite (AEB, blind-spot, rear traffic alert, Travel Assist, stop-and-go ACC) is standard on every trim including the base S, and NHTSA gives 5 stars overall, but there is no IIHS award and pedestrian AEB rates only Marginal.

Family road-trip comfort66
#1 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Above-average rear room, supportive front seats, a settled ride and dual-zone auto climate on every trim make for comfortable trips, but rear amenities are thin and a 14.1 cu ft trunk fills quickly with four people's bags.

Daily driving ease74
#6 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

A torquey 1.5T (184 lb-ft from 1,750 rpm) through a real 8-speed automatic, standard stop-and-go adaptive cruise and a smooth ride make it an easy commuter; touch-based climate controls and short front legroom are the annoyances.

Commuting cost efficiency62
#10 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

About 33 MPG combined on regular fuel is respectable for a gas compact but well behind hybrid rivals, and VW maintenance/repair costs run above the Japanese and Korean compacts.

Parking & maneuverability70
#7 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Good sightlines and a 35.8 ft turning circle help in town, but the Jetta is long for the class and offers only a rear camera with sensors on upper trims — no 360 view.

Work capability15
#8 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

No US tow rating, no bed, front-drive only, and a 14.1 cu ft trunk — not a work vehicle.

Durability for work duty42

The mature EA211 1.5T with a torque-converter automatic is a sound mechanical base, but VW's below-average brand reliability and smaller dealer network weigh against hard-use duty.

Jobsite & upfit practicality18

No AC outlet, factory hitch, roof rails or upfit program; just folding rear seats and accessory roof bars.

Long-distance comfort & range72
#1 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Supportive seats, a settled highway ride, low cruise revs from the 8-speed and standard Travel Assist make it a good mile-eater; the 13.2-gal tank gives roughly 435 miles combined, more on the highway.

Outdoor & adventure capability22

Front-wheel drive on every trim, low sedan ground clearance, no tow rating and no factory roof rails — pavement-bound.

Gear & luggage flexibility50

The 14.1 cu ft trunk and standard 60/40 split-folding seatbacks handle normal luggage and long items, but there is no hitch or factory rails and bulky gear is a squeeze.

Handling & agility70
#7 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Reviewers find the 2025 Jetta stable and surprisingly nimble — KBB reports "no disappointment in pep or nimbleness" — though the torsion-beam rear and eco tires mean early understeer at the limit.

Steering feel66
#6 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Opinion is split: KBB calls the steering especially good for a front-driver, while CarPro finds it loose next to the Honda; accurate and well-weighted but light on feedback.

Braking confidence70
#4 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

A 169 ft 70-0 mph stop is about average for the class with minimal fade, and the pedal is firm and progressive.

Powertrain smoothness & response72
#5 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

The 1.5T is smooth and pulls from low revs, and the 8-speed automatic shifts well with no CVT rubber-band feel; mild turbo lag and cylinder-deactivation transitions keep it out of the top band.

Drivetrain noise & vibration65
#3 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Quiet and unstrained at a cruise thanks to the geared automatic, but the four-cylinder turns coarse under hard acceleration.

A 35.8 ft turning circle is mid-pack and easy to manage in parking lots.

Driving position & ergonomics68
#8 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Good outward visibility from the upright greenhouse and supportive seats, but the 2025 refresh's capacitive Climatronic Touch controls are harder to use on the move, front legroom is short and only the driver seat is powered.

Fun-to-drive factor64
#6 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

The torquey 1.5T and real automatic make it more satisfying than CVT rivals and reviewers note it is enjoyable on a curvy road, but the volume car is pleasant rather than engaging — the fun one is the GLI.

10Value & Market PositionOne of the Jetta's strongest categories.2.58C+
Standard equipment generosity82
#1 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

The 2025 facelift made the full IQ.DRIVE suite (stop-and-go adaptive cruise, Travel Assist, Active Blind Spot Monitor, Rear Traffic Alert, Front Assist AEB) standard on the $23,220 base S, along with a digital cluster and wireless App-Connect. Rivals hold back much of that until mid trims, though wireless charging, keyless access and the larger screen still wait for SE/SEL.

Feature value per dollar72
#7 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

At the point of sale the Jetta is a strong buy, with a low entry price, generous standard driver-assist and a 4-year/50,000-mile warranty. The value erodes over ownership: KBB projects only ~42% retained at five years, there is no hybrid, and Edmunds marks it down on interior quality and overall value against the Civic.

Trim & configuration breadth68
#7 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Five well-spaced grades — S, Sport, SE, SEL and the GLI Autobahn — span $23,220 to $33,940, and the GLI's 2.0T gives a real performance rung. But it's FWD-only with one mainstream engine, no hybrid, a single sedan body, and the mainstream trims are automatic-only.

Sales popularity & market acceptance52
#9 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

The Jetta is still VW's best-selling car in the US, but 2025 volume fell sharply to about 54,000, down 24% year over year (Q4 alone down ~43%). That leaves it a distant follower behind the Civic, Corolla, Sentra and Elantra, and sliding even within a shrinking segment.

Brand desirability & image58
#11 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

The VW badge still carries some German-engineering cachet, and the Jetta's driving feel is well reviewed. That is offset by a middling reliability reputation, residuals at the back of the mainstream field and a smaller dealer network, so the brand neither drags on the car nor lifts it the way Honda or Mazda do.

Deals & incentive availability82
#2 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Scored on buyer benefit, this is a strength. With Jetta sales dropping steeply and residuals soft, VW has leaned on subvented APR and low lease payments, and transaction prices commonly land below MSRP with room to negotiate.

Model freshness60
#6 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

2025 is the first year of the mid-cycle facelift: restyled front and rear, a revised interior, a new 1.5T EVO2 and standard IQ.DRIVE. Underneath it is still the A7/MQB generation from 2019, and its age shows in the infotainment. VW's retreat from sedans makes a direct successor uncertain.

Critical reception & awards58
#10 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Reviewers call it stylish, spacious, efficient and satisfying to drive, but consistently place it behind the Civic. It has no 10Best or NACTOY recognition, and IIHS tested the 2025 car without awarding a Top Safety Pick (Acceptable on the updated side test).
