The verdict
A struggling compact sedan, strong on ownership and held back by performance.
The 2024 Jetta is one of the cheapest ways into a compact sedan. It starts at $22,660, and every automatic gets a full driver-assist suite as standard. It returns 40 MPG on the highway and rides quietly and comfortably. The trade-offs come later in ownership and in the crash-test details: resale value is the worst in its class, the powertrain warranty is only 4 years/50,000 miles, and IIHS rated the headlights Poor on most trims and the updated rear-passenger crash test Poor. It is also the last year of the old body before the 2025 facelift, so it makes the most sense bought at a discount and kept for a long time.
Jump to scoresStrengths
- Low sticker price
- Driver assists standard on every automatic
- Strong highway mileage on regular gas
What holds it back
- Poor resale value and short powertrain warranty
- Modest power, front-drive only, no hybrid
- Weak results in newer IIHS tests

Detailed scoring by subject
1Performance & PowertrainThe Jetta's lowest-graded category.0.24F
The volume Sport/SE trims use the 1.5L TSI turbo-four (introduced for MY2022) at 158 hp — a touch above the Civic's 150 hp and Elantra's 147 hp. The GLI's 2.0T (228 hp) is the range maximum.
184 lb-ft from a low, broad plateau is well above the naturally aspirated Civic/Elantra/Corolla base engines (~130–150 lb-ft), giving strong everyday pull.
Instrumented testing of the 1.5T Jetta with the 8-speed automatic puts it around 7.1 s, quicker than most mainstream compact sedans with base engines.
The 1.5 TSI delivers torque early and cruises quietly, avoiding the buzzy high-rpm character of naturally aspirated rivals, but reviewers note some turbo lag from rest and occasional cylinder-deactivation/stop-start roughness.
A conventional 8-speed torque-converter automatic (plus a 6-speed manual on the base S) avoids the CVT drone of most rivals; criticism centers on slow kickdowns and some low-speed lurchiness.
Every 2024 Jetta, including the GLI, is front-wheel drive; no AWD is offered.
Two gas powertrains — the 1.5T (with manual or 8-speed auto) and the GLI's 2.0T (manual or 7-speed DSG) — but no hybrid, PHEV or EV, trailing electrified rivals like Civic, Elantra and Corolla.
2Efficiency & RangeMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.90C-
The volume Sport/SE automatic rates 33 MPG combined — strong for a non-hybrid compact sedan.
29 MPG city for the volume automatic trims.
40 MPG highway is among the best for a gas-only compact sedan, helped by the tall 8-speed gearing.
A modest 13.2-gallon tank limits combined-cycle range to about 436 miles despite good economy.
EPA's annual fuel-cost estimate for the volume trim on regular gasoline.
The 1.5T runs on regular unleaded with no premium requirement.
3SafetyMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.29C
The 2024 Jetta is a carry-over year of the 2019-launched A7 generation and keeps its 5-star NHTSA overall rating, with 4-star frontal and rollover subscores.
Good in both small-overlap tests and the original moderate-overlap test. But it rates Poor in the updated moderate-overlap test (rear-passenger protection) and Acceptable in the updated side test, so the 2024 Jetta earned no IIHS award. A Poor result in a key current test puts it in the low band.
For 2024, IQ.DRIVE is standard on every automatic Jetta: AEB with pedestrian monitoring, blind-spot monitoring, rear traffic alert, Lane Assist, stop-and-go adaptive cruise, Travel Assist and Emergency Assist. Blind-spot and rear-traffic alerts are standard across the line. Only the manual-transmission S/Sport lacks the IQ.DRIVE assists, and that is not the volume configuration.
Front Assist is standard, but IIHS rates the 2024 Jetta's pedestrian front crash prevention only Marginal, below the segment leaders' Acceptable/Good results.
Active Blind Spot Monitor and Rear Traffic Alert are standard on every trim, which tops the class for availability. But the system only alerts: there is no safe-exit warning and no surround camera.
Lane Assist and Travel Assist centering are standard with the automatic and work well on well-marked highways. Reviewers note VW's centering wanders on curves and faded lines.
Standard full-speed-range adaptive cruise with Stop & Go pairs with Travel Assist to form a capable hands-on highway assist. It has no lane-change assist and its gap-keeping is somewhat conservative.
No hands-free driving system is offered. Travel Assist requires hands on the wheel.
IIHS rates the headlights Poor on the S, Sport and SE trims, which include the volume trims, and only Marginal on the top SEL. No configuration earns Acceptable or Good.
The conventional three-box shape, upright greenhouse and fairly slim pillars give better sightlines than fastback rivals. A rear camera is standard, but no surround view is offered.
IIHS rates LATCH Acceptable: two full LATCH positions plus a tether-only center seat. Generous rear legroom and wide doors make rear-facing seats easier to fit, but three-across is impractical.
4Space & ComfortMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.24C
The 2024 Jetta is a five-passenger compact sedan on every trim (S, Sport, SE, SEL); 2024 is a mid-cycle carry-over year of the seventh-generation (A7, 2019-) car.
38.5 in of front headroom is mid-pack for a compact sedan — behind the Elantra and Civic, ahead of the Corolla. Sunroof-equipped SE/SEL cars give up some of it.
Front legroom of 41.1 in is the Jetta's weakest interior dimension — short of the Civic and Elantra (42.3 in) and well short of the Sentra (44.0 in).
Rear headroom of 37.2 in is slightly above the compact-sedan norm thanks to the A7's fairly upright roofline.
37.4 in of rear legroom is a genuine Jetta packaging strength — level with the Civic and well clear of the Corolla and Sentra; Car and Driver lists the spacious interior as a headline positive.
A 14.1 cu ft trunk is mid-pack for the class (Civic 14.8, Elantra 14.2, Corolla 13.1), with standard 60/40 folding rear seatbacks.
Conventional compact-sedan storage — covered center bin, door pockets, front tray — with nothing clever; the wireless charging pad is SEL-only for 2024 and there is no onboard power outlet.
Firm, supportive front seats in the VW idiom (sport comfort seats from the Sport trim up) and a roomy rear bench; volume-trim SE uses V-Tex leatherette with limited power adjustment, keeping it below the 80 band.
Reviewers consistently praise the Jetta's settled, comfort-biased ride; the chassis is explicitly tuned for comfort over handling, though the torsion-beam rear can get busy over sharp impacts.
Quieter at a highway cruise than most compact rivals, which Car and Driver calls out; the 1.5T gets vocal under hard throttle.
Heated front seats from the Sport trim (new for 2024) and dual-zone Climatronic on the volume SE; the SEL adds ventilated front seats, heated rear outboard seats and a heated wheel — rich for the class at the top, but the base S goes without heat and there is no rear climate zone.
5Cost of OwnershipThe Jetta's best-graded category.2.58C+
The 2024 Jetta S is one of the cheapest compact sedans on sale, undercutting the Civic LX and Corolla LE and landing alongside the Elantra SE and Forte LXS at the bottom of the segment.
The SE is the volume Jetta — adding leatherette, power driver's seat, sunroof and the larger touchscreen — and still prices below a comparably equipped Civic Sport or Corolla SE.
Edmunds projects modest early costs (the first two services are covered by Carefree Maintenance) rising sharply in years 4–5, putting the Jetta roughly level with the Japanese compacts rather than in German-premium territory.
Resale is the Jetta's weakest ownership metric: KBB says it 'languishes at the bottom of our resale value table for this class', and Edmunds' MSRP-based projection retains only about 40% after five years.
VW's 4-year/50,000-mile New Vehicle Limited Warranty beats the 3-year/36,000-mile coverage from Honda, Toyota, Mazda and Nissan but trails Hyundai/Kia's 5/60.
Engine and transmission are covered only by the same 4-year/50,000-mile limited warranty — below the 5-year/60,000-mile Japanese norm and well short of Hyundai/Kia's 10/100.
Carefree Maintenance covers the 10,000- and 20,000-mile scheduled services (2 yr/20k mi, including wear items like brake pads but not tire rotations), plus 3 yr/36k mi roadside assistance and a Car-Net trial — better than Honda's nothing-included approach, a touch short of ToyotaCare's 2 yr/25k mi.
$26,100 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (43% retained, or about $11,223) leaves about $14,877 in depreciation. Add the projected $4,046 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $18,923 in total.
6Reliability & QualityMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.07C
MY2024 is the sixth US year of the A7/MQB Jetta, the final year before the 2025 facelift, using the mature 1.5L TSI and 8-speed torque-converter automatic since 2022. The two sources split: J.D. Power is favourable but Consumer Reports rates it below average for its model year. That puts it at the mainstream compact-sedan midpoint, below the Japanese and Korean leaders.
Volkswagen has sat in the lower third of Consumer Reports brand-reliability rankings and below industry average in J.D. Power VDS for several years running, with electronics and infotainment the dominant complaints. This is a brand-level judgment held equal across VW scorecards.
MY2024 has no NHTSA recall campaigns on record, a cleaner year than the facelifted 2025 (instrument-cluster blackout and transmission ground-wire fire-risk recalls). The score is held below the top band because the wider A7 generation has routine campaigns on 2019–2020 cars and recurring EA211 water-pump/thermostat and infotainment-software service bulletins.
The 158 hp 1.5L TSI EVO2 is part of the widely deployed EA211 family. Pairing it with a conventional 8-speed automatic rather than a dry-clutch DSG avoids VW's biggest historical compact-car liability. It is still a turbocharged direct-injection engine with known water-pump, carbon-buildup and fuel-pump service themes. Some owners also report head-gasket concerns, which keeps it mid-band.
This is the pre-facelift cabin. VW switchgear feel and the available digital cockpit read well for the price. However, reviewers criticised the A7's hard-plastic lower dash, doors and rear panels as decontented compared with earlier Jettas. It sits a step below the 2025 refresh, which upgraded the dash.
Puebla-built assembly is structurally solid, with consistent panel alignment. However, CR owner data for 2024 specifically flags squeaks, rattles, wind noise and weather-stripping. That shaves the score slightly below the facelifted car.
Volkswagen's US network is roughly 600–650 dealers, about half of Toyota's, which leaves rural coverage gaps. Metro coverage is adequate and service satisfaction is mid-pack. The score is held level with the other gas VW scorecards.
Parts commonality across MQB and EA211 (Jetta, Golf, Taos) and a deep independent-VW aftermarket make this the cheapest VW to keep running. Parts still price above Japanese and Korean equivalents, and coverage is a 4-year/50,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty. Owners also report premature rear-brake wear.
7Technology & InfotainmentOne of the Jetta's weakest categories.1.68D
The pre-facelift 2024 Jetta pairs a 6.5-inch base touchscreen with an 8-inch unit on the upper trims; the volume SE gets the 8-inch screen, near the bottom of the sedan band.
The MIB-based system is simple and reasonably quick, and VW retained physical climate and volume controls, but the small, plain screens look dated against Korean rivals' displays.
App-Connect with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto is offered from the base S's 6.5-inch unit up, so phone projection is available cable-free across the range.
Built-in navigation is SEL-only, so the volume SE relies on phone projection; VW's MIB voice control is command-based rather than conversational.
A basic six-speaker system on most trims; BeatsAudio is reserved for the SEL and is a bass-forward, modest upgrade rather than a true premium system.
A fully digital 8-inch Digital Cockpit is standard on every 2024 Jetta, with the configurable 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit Pro on upper trims — a clear class strength.
The 2024 Jetta's MIB2-generation infotainment has no meaningful over-the-air update program; software and map updates are dealer or USB based, and there is no whole-vehicle OTA.
VW Car-Net via the myVW app covers remote lock/unlock, vehicle status and locate, with remote start on equipped automatic trims, but Remote Access becomes a paid subscription after the trial and there is no digital key.
USB-C ports are provided up front, but wireless charging is SEL-only for 2024 and rear port provision is thin; no AC outlet.
KESSY keyless access with push-button start arrives on the volume SE and above, with remote start on automatic SE/SEL; the S and Sport keep a conventional key and there is no phone-as-key.
A rearview camera is standard and Park Distance Control sensors are limited to upper trims; no 360-degree camera or automated parking is offered on any 2024 Jetta.
No head-up display is offered on any 2024 Jetta trim.
8Use-Case FitOne of the Jetta's weakest categories.1.52D
37.4 in of rear legroom and an upright roofline make rear-facing seats easy to fit, and the 14.1 cu ft trunk takes a stroller; IIHS rates LATCH only Acceptable.
IQ.DRIVE (AEB, blind-spot, lane assist, stop-and-go ACC) became standard on every automatic Jetta for 2024 and NHTSA gives 5 stars overall, but IIHS scores are mixed (Poor updated moderate overlap, Poor/Marginal headlights) and there is no TSP award.
Roomy rear seat, comfortable ride and a quiet highway cabin suit four adults on a long trip; rear amenities are thin below the SEL (heated rear seats SEL-only) and the trunk fills quickly with four people's bags.
Low-end torque from the 1.5T and a conventional 8-speed automatic make stop-and-go easy, and stop-and-go adaptive cruise is standard on automatics; short front legroom and some low-speed turbo hesitation are the annoyances.
33 MPG combined on regular fuel is good for a non-hybrid, but well behind the Civic and Corolla hybrids, and no electrified Jetta is offered.
A tidy 35.8 ft turning circle and good outward visibility make it easy to place, but parking aids stop at a rear camera on volume trims and no surround view is offered.
No US tow rating, no bed, front-drive compact sedan with a 14.1 cu ft trunk — not a work vehicle.
The EA211 1.5T and torque-converter automatic are robust mechanically, but VW's below-average brand reliability and a thinner dealer network than Toyota/Honda weigh against hard-use durability.
No AC outlet, hitch, roof rails or upfit program; only folding rear seatbacks and accessory roof bars.
Quiet, comfortable highway cruiser with 40 MPG highway and standard stop-and-go ACC with Travel Assist on automatics; ~436-mile combined range from a 13.2-gal tank is the main limit.
Front-drive only, low sedan ground clearance, no tow rating and no factory roof rails — pavement-bound.
Mid-pack 14.1 cu ft trunk with standard 60/40 split-folding seatbacks handles normal luggage; bulky gear is a squeeze through a sedan aperture with no hitch or rails.
9Driving ExperienceOne of the Jetta's strongest categories.2.57C+
Composed and secure, but the chassis is tuned for comfort and the non-GLI trims use a torsion-beam rear, so it understeers early; below the Civic and Mazda3.
Accurate and well weighted but light on feedback — Car and Driver notes it is less precise than the GLI's or the Mazda3's.
Firm, progressive pedal and adequate stops on eco-biased all-season tires; no performance brake hardware outside the GLI.
The 1.5T pulls early and the 8-speed automatic avoids CVT rubber-banding, but there is some off-the-line turbo lag and slow kickdowns.
Quiet and unstrained at cruise with no CVT drone; the four-cylinder gets coarse under hard acceleration.
A 35.8 ft turning circle is easy to live with and mid-pack for compact sedans.
Upright greenhouse and slim pillars give good visibility, physical climate controls are easy to use, and the seats are supportive; short front legroom limits tall drivers.
Pleasant and torquey, and a 6-speed manual is still offered on the S, but the volume automatic car is forgettable; enthusiasts are pointed to the GLI.
10Value & Market PositionOne of the Jetta's strongest categories.2.49C+
For 2024 VW made IQ.DRIVE (AEB with pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise, lane assist, blind spot/rear traffic alert) standard on automatic-equipped Jettas, added rain-sensing wipers and a leatherette wheel to the S, and heated seats to the Sport — strong content at a ~$22.7K start. The S still carries only a 6.5-inch touchscreen and cloth seats, and the larger screen, power seat and wireless charging wait for SE.
At purchase the Jetta is a strong buy — one of the lowest stickers in the class, a torquey 158-hp turbo and a 4-yr/50k basic warranty. Over a five-year hold the case erodes: class-worst resale (~40–46% of MSRP) gives back much of the price advantage, there's no longer powertrain warranty, and no hybrid option.
Six grades — S, Sport, SE, SEL, the manual-only 40th Anniversary GLI and GLI Autobahn — span ~$22.7K to ~$33K, and 2024 is notable for still offering a six-speed manual on S, Sport and GLI. Gaps: front-drive only, no hybrid, and one mainstream engine.
The Jetta rebounded strongly in 2024 — a 35% surge in Q3 made it VW's second-best seller — but at ~72,000 units it remains a distant follower to Civic, Corolla, Sentra and Elantra in the compact segment.
VW carries genuine German-engineering appeal and driving-feel reputation, offset by middling reliability perception, class-worst residuals and a smaller dealer network — buyers don't aspire to a Jetta the way they do a Civic or Mazda3.
Scored on buyer benefit: Volkswagen ran routine subvented APR and lease support on the 2024 Jetta, and with the facelifted 2025 arriving, run-out 2024 stock traded well under MSRP — the soft residuals that hurt ownership cost are what funded those deals.
2024 is the sixth US model year of the A7/MQB Jetta (launched 2019), two years past the 2022 mid-cycle update that brought the 1.5T, and the last year before the 2025 facelift (new fascias, standard digital cockpit, revised interior) — so a 2024 buyer gets the outgoing look with an imminent refresh.
Reviewers like the Jetta's composed ride, roomy rear seat, real automatic and available manual, but place it mid-pack — marked down for a plain cabin, small base screen and poor resale. No 10Best/NACTOY recognition, and its IIHS result slipped with a Poor on the updated moderate-overlap test.
