The verdict
A struggling compact sedan, strong on ownership and held back by performance.
The 2020 Jetta is a roomy, comfortable compact sedan that is cheap to buy and cheap to run. It started at $19,815, returns 34 MPG combined (40 highway) on regular gas, and was among the last VWs sold with a transferable 6-year/72,000-mile warranty. The trade-offs are a slow 147-hp engine, headlights that IIHS rates Poor on most trims, and key tech like adaptive cruise and the larger screen held back for the pricier SEL. It suits a buyer who values ride comfort and low running costs over speed and gadgets.
Jump to scoresStrengths
- Low price and an unusually long warranty
- Strong fuel economy without a hybrid
- Comfortable, quiet ride
What holds it back
- Slow by any measure
- Poor headlights and thin driver assists
- Dated tech unless you buy an SEL

Detailed scoring by subject
1Performance & PowertrainThe Jetta's lowest-graded category.0.05F
MY2020 is the second year of the A7 generation (launched for 2019) and carries over the 147-hp 1.4T, which the 158-hp 1.5T replaced for 2022. Output is modest for the class.
184 lb-ft arriving at low rpm is strong for a mainstream compact base engine, well above naturally aspirated rivals' ~130–140 lb-ft.
The most commonly cited 0–60 time for the 2020 1.4T automatic is about 7.7 s, adequate for the class. Published tests run from 7.5 s to Edmunds' 8.4 s.
The 1.4T delivers early, flat torque and cruises quietly, which is better than the buzzy naturally aspirated base engines of rivals. Some lag from rest and thin top-end pull keep it out of the 80s.
A conventional 8-speed torque-converter automatic (a 6-speed manual is also offered) avoids the CVT drone of most rivals. Reviewers do note slow kickdowns and occasional hesitation at low speed.
Every 2020 US Jetta, GLI included, is front-wheel drive, and 4Motion is not offered.
There are two gas engines (the 147-hp 1.4T and the 228-hp 2.0T GLI), each with an automatic or a manual. No hybrid, PHEV or EV is offered, so it trails electrified rivals like the Corolla.
2Efficiency & RangeMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.14C
The volume 1.4T automatic is EPA-rated 34 MPG combined for 2020, which is strong for a non-hybrid compact sedan. The rating dropped to 33 MPG for 2021.
30 MPG city is solid for a gas compact without hybrid assistance.
The tall 8-speed gearing and low-rpm turbo torque deliver 40 MPG on the highway, near the top of non-hybrid compact sedans.
The small 13.2-gallon tank limits combined-cycle range to about 449 miles, despite the good fuel economy.
The EPA's current-price annual estimate for the 1.4T is $1,950, which is competitive among gas compacts.
Every 2020 Jetta configuration, including the GLI, is EPA-rated on regular unleaded.
3SafetyMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.84C-
The 2020 Jetta is the second model year of the Mk7 (A7) generation that launched for 2019, a carry-over year for structure, and it holds a 5-star NHTSA overall rating with 4-star frontal and rollover subscores.
Good in both small-overlap tests, moderate overlap, original side, roof strength and head restraints (the updated side test, run later, is Acceptable), but no 2020 Top Safety Pick because every headlight rates Marginal or Poor.
Front Assist AEB, Blind Spot Monitor and Rear Traffic Alert are standard from the volume SE up but sit in an optional Driver Assistance Package on the base S; adaptive cruise and Lane Assist are confined to the SEL and SEL Premium.
Vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention rates Superior, but there is no pedestrian AEB rating and the system is optional on the base S.
Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Traffic Alert is standard from the SE up and optional on the S; it is alert-only, with no safe-exit warning or surround-view camera.
Lane Assist (lane keeping, not centering) is offered only on the SEL and SEL Premium, so the volume SE has no lane departure warning; Travel Assist centering did not arrive until the 2022 refresh.
ACC with Stop & Go (automatic) is limited to the SEL/SEL Premium, so the volume SE uses conventional cruise, and there is no integrated highway assist on any 2020 trim.
No hands-free driving system is offered, nor even a hands-on lane-centering highway assist.
IIHS rates the LED reflector headlights on the S, SE and R-Line (volume) trims Poor, and the SEL/SEL Premium LED projectors with high-beam assist only Marginal.
A conventional three-box profile with an upright greenhouse, large rear glass and relatively slim pillars gives good natural sightlines; a rearview camera is standard but no surround-view camera is offered.
IIHS rates LATCH ease of use Acceptable with two complete LATCH positions plus a tether-only center seat; the roomy rear seat helps with rear-facing seats, but three-across is tight.
4Space & ComfortMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.14C
Five-passenger compact sedan on every 2020 trim (S, SE, R-Line, SEL, SEL Premium).
Competitive front headroom for the compact class; 2020 is the second year of the A7 body launched for 2019, dimensions unchanged.
Front legroom trails the Civic and Sentra.
Mid-pack rear headroom for a compact sedan.
Rear legroom is among the roomier compact sedans, roughly matching the Civic.
Average compact-sedan trunk; the 60/40 split-folding rear seat adds flexibility.
Conventional storage (console bin, door pockets, phone tray, 60/40 pass-through); wireless charging pad only on SEL/SEL Premium, nothing clever.
Soft, well-bolstered seats and a supportive rear bench, but the volume SE has a manual driver seat in 2020 (6-way power arrived on the SE for 2021); power seat with lumbar is SEL Premium only.
Comfort-biased tuning rides smoothly over most surfaces despite the torsion-beam rear on 1.4T trims; big impacts can thud through.
Quieter than most compact rivals at cruise, with some tire noise on coarse pavement.
SE adds a panoramic sunroof and an available Cold Weather package (heated seats/wheel, remote start); ventilated front seats are SEL Premium-only; base S has manual A/C.
5Cost of OwnershipThe Jetta's best-graded category.3.44B+
The 2020 Jetta (second year of the seventh generation, 147-hp 1.4T) starts under $20k with destination, among the cheapest compact sedans on sale.
The SE is the volume Jetta, adding standard Front Assist/blind-spot monitoring, sunroof, heated seats and keyless access over the S, and prices below a comparably equipped Civic EX or Corolla SE.
Repairs are covered by the 6-year/72,000-mile warranty throughout the first five years, but only one year/10,000 miles of Carefree maintenance is included, so routine service costs start earlier than on the 2021; the total lands near the compact-sedan average.
The 2020 Jetta aged through the 2021–23 used-car price spike, so it held value better than VW's historical norm, though KBB notes it traditionally trails Civic, Corolla and Mazda3 on resale.
The 2020 Jetta is among the last VW model years under the 'People First' 6-year/72,000-mile transferable limited warranty — longer than Hyundai/Kia's 5/60 and double the 3/36 from Honda, Toyota and Mazda. VW cut it to 4/50 for MY2021.
There was no separate longer powertrain term: engine and transmission are covered under the 6-year/72,000-mile limited warranty. That beats the 5/60 Japanese norm but falls well short of Hyundai/Kia's 10/100.
Carefree Maintenance covers only the first scheduled service (1 year/10,000 miles), plus 3 years/36,000 miles of 24/7 roadside assistance and a Car-Net trial. That's a basic package, behind ToyotaCare's 2-year plan and ahead of Honda and Mazda.
$23,565 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (57% retained, or about $13,432) leaves about $10,133 in depreciation. Add the projected $4,300 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $14,433 in total.
6Reliability & QualityMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.00C
J.D. Power gives the 2020 Jetta 86/100 for quality & reliability ('Great'), and Consumer Reports calls it about average for its model year. One strong source and one average one put it in the upper part of the mid band, clearly ahead of the 2021 car's 76/100 JDP and below-average CR verdict.
Volkswagen has sat in the lower third of Consumer Reports brand-reliability rankings and below the industry average in J.D. Power's Vehicle Dependability Study across recent study years. This is a brand-level judgment and is held identical across VWs in the dataset.
MY2020 carries six NHTSA campaigns, more than any other A7 year. The serious one for the volume car is a 62,538-unit ignition-switch recall for conventional-key cars, where switch failure can stall the engine while driving. The rest are a TPMS software fix, small seatback-frame and airbag-module build campaigns, a one-car caliper-bolt recall, and a fuel suction-pump fire-risk recall limited to the GLI. Nothing points to a powertrain defect, but the count and the stall risk put it in the lower part of the typical band.
The 147 hp 1.4L TSI (EA211) with an 8-speed Aisin torque-converter automatic is a widely used VW pairing with no systemic failures, and it avoids the dry-clutch DSG. Known EA211-family water-pump/thermostat-housing leaks, PCV issues and direct-injection carbon buildup keep it mid-band, below naturally aspirated Japanese compacts.
The pre-facelift A7 cabin is tidy, with good switchgear feel and an available digital cockpit, but reviewers widely criticized its hard plastics and decontenting compared with earlier Jettas. It is competitive for the class rather than a standout.
Puebla-built A7 Jettas are well regarded for panel alignment and solidity, and the strong 86/100 JDP quality score supports that. Small assembly-error campaigns (airbag module weld, seatback frames, caliper bolts) keep it at the 2021 car's level rather than above it.
Volkswagen has roughly 600-650 US dealers, about half Toyota's count, which leaves gaps in rural markets, and its service satisfaction is mid-pack. Metro coverage is adequate.
The Jetta shares the MQB platform and EA211 engines with the Golf and Tiguan and has sold in volume for decades, so it has the best independent-shop familiarity and aftermarket of any VW. Parts still cost more than Japanese or Korean equivalents. The 2020 Jetta came with VW's 6-yr/72k-mi transferable bumper-to-bumper warranty, which was cut to 4 yr/50k mi for MY2021.
7Technology & InfotainmentOne of the Jetta's weakest categories.0.79F
The volume SE uses the 6.5-inch Composition Color screen; only SEL and SEL Premium get the 8-inch unit.
Simple menus with physical climate controls, but the 6.5-inch screen on volume trims is small and dated; every 2020 trim uses the pre-MIB3 system.
App-Connect CarPlay/Android Auto is standard on every trim but wired-only; wireless projection did not arrive until the 2021 MIB3 system.
Native navigation is SEL Premium-only; volume trims rely on phone projection and basic command-style voice control.
Basic 4/6-speaker audio on volume trims; the well-regarded 8-speaker BeatsAudio with subwoofer is SEL and up.
The 10.25-inch configurable Digital Cockpit is excellent but standard only on SEL/SEL Premium; volume S/SE/R-Line keep analog gauges.
No published over-the-air vehicle software program for the 2020 Jetta's MIB2 systems; updates are dealer-performed.
Next-generation Car-Net is standard for 2020 with app-based remote lock/unlock, vehicle status and parked-car locator (remote start where equipped), plus a subscription Wi-Fi hotspot; no digital key.
Front USB-C ports standard, wireless charging SEL-only, no AC outlet.
KESSY keyless access with push-button start from the SE; remote start only via the Cold Weather package or upper trims; the S uses a conventional key; no phone-as-key.
Rearview camera standard; Rear Traffic Alert comes in the Driver Assistance Package (optional on S, standard SE+); parking sensors top-trim only and no 360-degree camera.
No head-up display offered on any 2020 Jetta trim.
8Use-Case FitOne of the Jetta's weakest categories.1.29D
Roomy rear seat (37.4 in legroom) and wide rear doors take child seats reasonably, but a 14.1 cu ft sedan trunk limits stroller-plus-gear duty.
Good crash ratings, but in 2020 forward collision warning/AEB, blind-spot and rear traffic alert are optional on the base S (standard SE+), and adaptive cruise is SEL-only.
Comfortable seats and a quiet ride suit medium trips, but rear amenities are thin and the trunk is modest.
The torquey 1.4T (184 lb-ft) and smooth 8-speed automatic make it relaxed in traffic, with occasional low-speed hesitation and stop/start roughness.
EPA 30/40/34 MPG on regular fuel is strong for a non-hybrid compact.
Manageable footprint with a 35.8 ft turning circle and good outward visibility; rear camera standard but sensors only on the top trim.
No US tow rating and a sedan trunk; not a work vehicle.
The simple 1.4T/torsion-beam package should hold up with care but has no fleet-abuse reputation.
No onboard power, tie-down or upfit provisions beyond basic trunk hooks.
40 MPG highway and a 13.2-gal tank give 500+ mile highway range with a quiet, comfortable cabin; adaptive cruise only on SEL trims limits fatigue reduction on volume trims.
FWD only, low ground clearance, no tow rating; pavement-bound beyond gravel roads.
The 60/40 split-folding rear seat and 14.1 cu ft trunk fit normal luggage; bulky gear is a squeeze, with no hitch or factory rails.
9Driving ExperienceOne of the Jetta's strongest categories.2.36C+
Secure and composed but comfort-tuned; the torsion-beam rear on 1.4T trims makes it less agile than a Mazda3 or Civic (the GLI's multilink is far sharper).
Accurate, light-to-moderate steering with little feedback.
Adequate stopping and a progressive pedal; rear drum brakes on 1.4T trims, unremarkable distances.
Strong low-end torque and a smooth 8-speed automatic, but some hesitation from a stop and a noticeable stop/start system.
The 1.4T is quiet at cruise and inoffensive under load, if characterless.
Tight turning circle for a compact sedan; unchanged A7 chassis.
Good outward visibility and logical physical controls with a tilt/telescoping wheel, though the volume SE's manual seat lacks power lumbar.
Pleasant but forgettable in 1.4T form; the 6-speed manual on the S adds a little engagement, the GLI is the enthusiast pick.
10Value & Market PositionOne of the Jetta's strongest categories.2.28C
The S gets LED headlights, a 6.5-inch touchscreen with CarPlay/Android Auto and a digital-ready cockpit, but Front Assist AEB and blind-spot monitoring cost extra on the S, while the Corolla makes Toyota Safety Sense standard. From the volume SE up, those assists plus a sunroof, heated seats and keyless access are standard for less money than rivals charge.
It starts under $20k and pairs a torquey 147-hp/184 lb-ft 1.4T with strong highway economy, a roomy back seat and a transferable 6/72 warranty, so the content per dollar is strong. Plain interior materials keep it short of standout value.
Five well-spaced trims (S, SE, R-Line, SEL, SEL Premium) span roughly $20k–$29k, with a 6-speed manual on the S. But there is one engine, FWD only, and the GLI is sold separately.
US sales fell 18% in 2020 to about 82,700 in a pandemic-hit, shrinking sedan market, a fraction of Civic and Corolla volume, though still VW's second-best seller.
VW carries a 'German-engineered' feel a notch above mainstream Asian rivals, but a mixed reliability reputation and lingering Dieselgate damage in the US leave its image neutral overall.
In 2020 VW leaned on Jetta finance offers and pandemic-era payment deferrals, and incentives across the compact segment were generous before 2021's chip shortage cut inventory.
MY2020 is the second year of the seventh generation (launched for 2019) on the modern MQB platform, so it is still fresh. A 2020 buyer gets the 1.4T that the MY2022 refresh replaced with a 1.5T.
Reviewers call it a sensible, roomy and efficient choice with a comfortable ride, but rank it in the lower half of the class for bland handling and interior. The standard Jetta won no major awards.
