The verdict
A struggling compact sedan, strong on ownership and held back by performance.
The 2023 Jetta is one of the cheapest compact sedans to buy and own. It started at $21,750, the volume SE cost $25,480, and it ran on regular fuel at 40 MPG highway, with a ride and cabin quiet enough to feel a class up. The weak spots are real, though: Poor-rated headlights on most trims, a powertrain warranty that ends at 4 years/50,000 miles, a small 6.5-inch screen below the SEL, and no AWD or hybrid option. It suits a commuter who wants comfort for little money more than one who wants the best resale value or the strongest safety scores.
Jump to scoresStrengths
- Low price and low running costs
- Strong highway mileage on regular gas
- Comfortable, quiet daily driver
What holds it back
- Poor headlights and mixed crash-test results
- Short powertrain coverage
- Small screen and dated infotainment below the SEL

Detailed scoring by subject
1Performance & PowertrainThe Jetta's lowest-graded category.0.27F
The volume SE/Sport trims use the 1.5L TSI EVO turbo-four rated 158 hp, which replaced the 147-hp 1.4T for MY2022 and carries over unchanged into 2023. Modest output for the class, slightly above the Civic's 150 hp base engine.
184 lb-ft available from 1,750 rpm is strong for a mainstream compact base engine, well above naturally-aspirated rivals (~130-140 lb-ft).
Instrumented testing of the 1.5T automatic puts it at about 7.1 s to 60 mph, quick for a mainstream compact sedan and ahead of CVT-equipped Corolla/Elantra base models.
The 1.5 TSI delivers early, flat torque and cruises quietly, outclassing the buzzy naturally-aspirated base engines in the segment; a beat of turbo lag from rest and noticeable cylinder-deactivation transitions keep it out of the 80s.
A conventional 8-speed torque-converter automatic (with a 6-speed manual still offered on the S) avoids the CVT drone of most rivals; reviewers fault slow kickdowns and occasional low-speed harshness.
Every 2023 US Jetta, including the GLI, is front-wheel drive; 4Motion is not offered on the nameplate.
Two gas engines — the 158-hp 1.5T and the 228-hp 2.0T in the GLI — each with automatic and manual transmission choices, but no hybrid, PHEV or EV option, which trails electrified rivals like the Civic, Corolla and Elantra.
2Efficiency & RangeMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.90C-
The volume SE/Sport automatic is EPA-rated 33 MPG combined, strong for a non-hybrid compact sedan; the base S on smaller wheels rates 35.
29 MPG city is solid for a gas compact without hybrid assistance.
A tall 8-speed and the turbo's low-rpm torque give the Jetta a 40 MPG highway rating, among the best non-hybrid compact sedans.
A small 13.2-gallon tank limits combined-cycle range to about 436 miles despite good economy.
Regular-fuel operation and 33 MPG combined yield an EPA annual fuel cost of about $2,050.
Both the 1.5T and the GLI's 2.0T are rated on regular unleaded, so there is no premium-fuel penalty anywhere in the lineup.
3SafetyMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.23C
The 2023 Jetta (Mk7/A7 generation, carry-over year after the 2022 mid-cycle update) holds a 5-star NHTSA overall rating, though frontal and rollover subscores are 4 stars.
Good in both small-overlap tests, original moderate overlap, roof strength and head restraints, but the updated side test is only Acceptable and the updated moderate overlap (rear-passenger) test is Poor, and the 2023 Jetta earned no IIHS award. Lands at the lower edge of the mid band.
Front Assist AEB with pedestrian monitoring, Blind Spot Monitor and Rear Traffic Alert are standard on every 2023 trim, and the full IQ.DRIVE suite (ACC Stop & Go, Lane Assist, Travel Assist, Emergency Assist) is standard on SE and SEL. On the base S and Sport it is only an option, so lane keeping and adaptive cruise are not universal.
Vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention rates Superior, but pedestrian AEB earned only Basic in both daytime and nighttime IIHS tests, a clear weakness against compact rivals rated Advanced/Superior on pedestrians.
Blind Spot Monitor and Rear Traffic Alert are standard on every trim, which is better than rivals that reserve them for upper trims, but the system is alert-focused with no safe-exit warning or surround-view camera.
Lane Assist and Travel Assist centering are standard on SE/SEL but optional on the S and Sport, and reviewers describe VW's centering as competent on clear highways with some wander on curves and faded lines.
ACC with Stop & Go integrates with Travel Assist into a capable hands-on highway assist on SE and SEL, but it is an option on the base S and Sport, and the system lacks lane-change assistance.
No hands-free driving system is offered; Travel Assist requires the driver's hands on the capacitive wheel at all times.
IIHS rates the LED reflector headlights on the S, Sport and SE (volume) trims Poor, and even the SEL's LED projectors only Marginal, so no 2023 Jetta has acceptable headlights.
A conventional three-box profile with an upright greenhouse, large rear glass and relatively slim pillars gives better natural sightlines than fastback-styled rivals; a rearview camera is standard but no surround-view camera is offered.
IIHS rates LATCH ease of use Acceptable with two complete LATCH positions; the roomy rear seat and wide doors help with rear-facing seats, but the anchors take some digging and the bench is too narrow for three-across.
4Space & ComfortMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.22C
Five-passenger compact sedan on every 2023 trim.
Competitive front headroom for the compact class.
Front legroom trails the Civic/Elantra (42.3 in) and Sentra (44.0 in).
Mid-pack rear headroom on a 105.7 in wheelbase.
Rear legroom is among the roomier compact sedans, matching the Civic.
Average compact-sedan trunk; the 60/40 split-folding rear seat adds flexibility.
Conventional compact-sedan storage (console bin, door pockets, phone tray); wireless charging pad only on the SEL, no clever storage solutions.
Supportive VW front seats with an 8-way power driver seat and lumbar on the SE; rear bench adequate for adults on medium trips.
Comfort-biased tuning soaks up all but the sharpest bumps despite the torsion-beam rear, a class strength.
Reviewers call the cabin impressively quiet for a compact sedan, with occasional tire thump over larger potholes.
SE adds heated front seats and dual-zone Climatronic; ventilated leather seats and the panoramic sunroof are SEL-only, and base S/Sport are sparse.
5Cost of OwnershipThe Jetta's best-graded category.3.13B
The 2023 Jetta S (mid-cycle-refreshed Mk7 with the 1.5L TSI, introduced for MY2022) is one of the cheapest compact sedans on sale, undercutting the Civic and Mazda3 and sitting with the Corolla, Elantra and Forte at the bottom of the class.
The SE is the volume Jetta, adding IQ.DRIVE driver assists, sunroof, heated seats and keyless access over the S/Sport, and still prices below a comparably equipped Civic EX.
Low early-year costs reflect VW's 2-yr/20k-mi Carefree Maintenance and the conventional 8-speed automatic; costs climb in years 4–5 once coverage lapses, but the 5-year total is at the low end for compact sedans.
The 2023 Jetta benefited from the post-pandemic used-car market and has held value better than VW's historical norm, but it still trails the Civic and Corolla; 5-year retention is projected in the mid-50s.
VW's 4-year/50,000-mile New Vehicle Limited Warranty beats the 3-year/36,000-mile coverage from Honda, Toyota, Mazda and Nissan but trails Hyundai/Kia's 5-year/60,000-mile term.
VW offers no extended powertrain coverage on the 2023 Jetta — the engine and transmission share the 4-year/50,000-mile limited warranty, below the 5-year/60,000-mile Japanese norm and well short of Hyundai/Kia's 10-year/100,000-mile term.
Carefree Maintenance covers scheduled services for 2 years/20,000 miles plus 3 years of 24/7 roadside assistance and a Car-Net trial — better than Honda/Mazda's nothing-included approach, close to ToyotaCare, short of a multi-year program.
$25,480 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (56% retained, or about $14,269) leaves about $11,211 in depreciation. Add the projected $3,639 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $14,850 in total.
6Reliability & QualityMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.14C
The two main sources disagree: J.D. Power rates the 2023 Jetta 81/100 'Great' for Quality & Reliability, while Consumer Reports rates it less reliable than the average 2023 car. That is a textbook mixed signal, landing it mid-band, below Japanese/Korean compact benchmarks but above the weaker VW nameplates.
Volkswagen has sat in the lower third of Consumer Reports brand-reliability rankings and below the industry average in J.D. Power's Vehicle Dependability Study across recent study years. This is a brand-level judgment and is held identical across VWs in the dataset.
The 2023 model year has no NHTSA safety recall on record — the generation's campaigns (ignition switch, TPMS software, fuel suction pump, cluster chime) all fall on 2019-2020 Jettas, and the later instrument-panel and transmission-ground-wire campaigns hit 2025-2026. TSB traffic for the generation centers on infotainment software and EA211-family cooling components, which keeps it out of the very top band.
The 158 hp 1.5L TSI EVO (EA211 family) with an 8-speed torque-converter automatic was in its second year in 2023 — no systemic failures, and it avoids the dry-clutch DSG that has historically hurt VW compacts. Against that it is a turbo direct-injection four with known EA211-family water-pump/thermostat-housing and carbon-buildup service themes, and engine is the top owner-complaint area for MY2023, so it sits mid-band.
The pre-facelift A7 cabin is tidy with good switchgear feel and a standard digital cluster, but reviewers repeatedly criticized the abundance of hard plastics and decontenting versus earlier Jettas. Competitive for the class rather than a standout; slightly below the 2025-facelift car's upgraded dash.
Puebla-built A7 Jettas are well regarded for panel alignment and structural solidity, and J.D. Power's strong 81/100 quality score supports decent initial quality. Owner 90-day complaints concentrate on electronics (phone pairing, driver-assist systems) rather than physical build, keeping it just below the segment's best.
Volkswagen's roughly 600-650 US dealers are about half Toyota's count, leaving gaps in rural markets; J.D. Power rates the 2023 Jetta's dealership experience only 71/100 (Average). Adequate metro coverage with a mid-pack service reputation.
MQB/EA211 commonality across Jetta, Golf and Taos plus decades of Jetta volume give the best independent-shop familiarity and aftermarket of any VW, but parts still price above Japanese/Korean equivalents. The 2023 model also carried VW's 4-yr/50k-mi warranty and 2-yr/20k-mi Carefree Maintenance, softening early ownership cost.
7Technology & InfotainmentOne of the Jetta's weakest categories.1.20D
The volume SE still uses the small 6.5-inch Composition Color screen; only the SEL gets an 8-inch unit.
Simple, responsive menus and physical climate controls, but the 6.5-inch screen on most trims is small and dated; the SEL's 8-inch unit is notably better.
CarPlay/Android Auto standard but wired on S/Sport/SE; wireless only with the SEL's 8-inch system.
Native navigation is SEL-only; volume trims rely on phone projection, and VW's voice control is basic command-style.
Ordinary six-speaker base audio on volume trims; the BeatsAudio upgrade is confined to the SEL.
An 8-inch Digital Cockpit is standard on every trim, with the configurable 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit Pro on the SEL, unusual at this price in 2023.
The 2023 Jetta's MIB2-generation Composition infotainment has no published over-the-air software program; updates are dealer-performed.
Car-Net telematics standard with Wi-Fi capability; the app offers remote lock/unlock, status and (with the SE's remote start) remote start; no digital key.
USB-C ports up front, but wireless phone charging is SEL-only and there is no AC outlet.
KESSY keyless access with push-button start and (new for 2023) remote start on the SE and up; S/Sport use a conventional key; no phone-as-key.
Rearview camera and Rear Traffic Alert standard across the range; no 360-degree camera or automated parking on any 2023 Jetta.
No head-up display is offered on any 2023 Jetta trim.
8Use-Case FitOne of the Jetta's weakest categories.1.48D
Generous 37.4-in rear legroom helps rear-facing seats, but LATCH is only 'Acceptable' and a sedan trunk limits stroller-plus-gear loads.
5-star NHTSA overall and standard AEB/blind-spot on every trim, but IQ.DRIVE is optional on S/Sport, the IIHS updated moderate overlap is Poor and the volume headlights rate Poor.
Quiet, compliant ride and decent rear room suit four adults, but rear amenities are thin and 14.1 cu ft of trunk caps luggage.
Torquey 1.5T (184 lb-ft from 1,750 rpm) with a smooth 8-speed automatic, a comfortable ride and stop-and-go ACC on SE/SEL make it an easy commuter.
Strong gas-compact economy on regular fuel with cheap consumables, though no hybrid is offered.
Tidy 35.8-ft turning circle, an upright greenhouse and a standard rear camera with Rear Traffic Alert; no surround view.
No US tow rating and only a 14.1 cu ft trunk; not a work vehicle.
The 1.5T and 8-speed automatic are proven mainstream hardware, but the car has no fleet reputation for hard use.
No onboard power, tie-down system or upfit ecosystem.
Quiet, settled highway manners, about 40 MPG highway and Travel Assist on SE/SEL make it a capable tourer for a compact.
FWD-only with low ground clearance and no tow rating; fine on graded gravel, little more.
14.1 cu ft trunk with a 60/40 split-folding rear seat; no roof rails or factory hitch.
9Driving ExperienceOne of the Jetta's strongest categories.2.48C+
Secure and composed even mid-corner, but tuned for comfort with noticeable body lean; torsion-beam rear (Sport adds XDS).
Decent heft and a hint of feedback, but slow and not especially precise.
Adequate stops with a progressive pedal on eco-biased tires; no instrumented 2023 test located.
Torquey low-rev response and a smooth 8-speed automatic, with some turbo lag off the line.
Quiet at cruise, with only a hint of growl under full throttle.
Tight turning circle for the compact-sedan class.
Good seat/wheel adjustment (8-way power driver seat on SE), physical climate controls and a clear standard digital cluster; the small center screen sits low.
Pleasant, torquey commuter tuned for comfort; a 6-speed manual on S/Sport adds some interest, while the GLI is the enthusiast pick.
10Value & Market PositionOne of the Jetta's strongest categories.2.43C+
Following the MY2022 refresh, even the $21.7k S gets the 8-inch digital cockpit, LED headlights, App-Connect, forward collision warning with AEB, blind-spot monitor and rear traffic alert; the volume SE adds IQ.DRIVE adaptive cruise/lane centering, sunroof, heated seats and keyless access — competitive with the Civic/Elantra at a lower price.
A low entry price, 158-hp/184 lb-ft turbo four with up to 42 MPG highway, and a roomy back seat make the Jetta strong content-for-money; the cheaper interior materials and weaker powertrain warranty keep it short of standout.
Four well-spaced trims (S, new-for-2023 Sport, SE, SEL) with a 6-speed manual still offered on S and Sport, but one engine, FWD only, and the GLI sold as a separate nameplate.
Jetta sales recovered in 2023 as supply improved, but it remains a mid-to-lower-pack compact far behind the Civic, Corolla and Elantra.
VW carries a 'German-engineered' halo above mainstream rivals but a weaker reliability reputation and lingering Dieselgate damage in the US; neutral overall.
Unlike Civic and Corolla, which sold at or above sticker during the 2022–23 shortage, the Jetta regularly carried VW cash or subsidized-APR offers as inventory recovered in 2023.
The 2023 model year is a carry-over in the seventh generation (launched MY2019) a year after the MY2022 refresh that brought the 1.5L engine and updated styling; mid-cycle, with the MQB platform still current.
Well-reviewed but rarely the class pick: mid-ranked by US News, KBB and Edmunds, with no major awards for the standard Jetta.
