The verdict
A struggling compact sedan, strong on ownership and held back by performance.
The 2019 Jetta was the first year of an all-new generation. It's a comfortable, frugal compact sedan that started at $19,395, returns 40 MPG on the highway and came with a transferable 6-year/72,000-mile warranty. The trade-offs are a launch-year reliability record (Consumer Reports put it last of nine 2019 small cars, and it has 11 recall campaigns), poorly rated headlights, and the fact that the best tech and driver assists are kept for the pricier SEL trims. As a used buy it suits shoppers who value ride comfort and running costs over driving excitement or proven dependability.
Jump to scoresStrengths
- Cheap to buy, long warranty
- Excellent highway fuel economy
- Strong crash-test results
What holds it back
- Modest power, front-drive only
- Poor headlights and thin driver assists
- Launch-year reliability concerns

Detailed scoring by subject
1Performance & PowertrainThe Jetta's lowest-graded category.0.05F
MY2019 is the launch year of the seventh-generation (A7) Jetta, with the 147-hp 1.4T as the only engine on mainstream trims. Output is modest for the class.
184 lb-ft arriving at low rpm is strong for a mainstream compact base engine. Naturally aspirated rivals make about 130–140 lb-ft.
Car and Driver's instrumented test put the 2019 1.4T automatic at about 7.6–7.7 s to 60 mph, which is adequate for the class.
The 1.4T delivers early, flat torque and cruises quietly, which is better than the buzzy naturally aspirated base engines of rivals. Some lag from rest and thin top-end pull keep it out of the 80s.
A conventional 8-speed torque-converter automatic (a 6-speed manual is also offered) avoids the CVT drone of most rivals. Reviewers do note slow kickdowns and occasional hesitation at low speed.
Every 2019 US Jetta, GLI included, is front-wheel drive, and 4Motion is not offered.
There are two gas engines (the 147-hp 1.4T and the 228-hp 2.0T GLI), each with an automatic or a manual. No hybrid, PHEV or EV is offered, so it trails electrified rivals like the Corolla.
2Efficiency & RangeMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.14C
The volume 1.4T automatic is EPA-rated 34 MPG combined for 2019, which is strong for a non-hybrid compact sedan.
30 MPG city is solid for a gas compact without hybrid assistance.
The tall 8-speed gearing and low-rpm turbo torque deliver 40 MPG on the highway, near the top of non-hybrid compact sedans.
The small 13.2-gallon tank limits combined-cycle range to about 449 miles, despite the good fuel economy.
The EPA's current-price annual estimate for the 1.4T is $1,950, which is competitive among gas compacts.
Every 2019 Jetta configuration, including the GLI, is EPA-rated on regular unleaded.
3SafetyMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.84C-
2019 is the launch year of the Mk7 (A7) Jetta in the US, and NHTSA rated it 5 stars overall in April 2019, with 4-star frontal and 4-star rollover (13.1% risk) subscores.
Good in both small-overlap tests, moderate overlap, original side, roof strength and head restraints, with Acceptable in the updated side test IIHS ran later. It earned no 2019 Top Safety Pick because every headlight rated Marginal or Poor.
Front Assist AEB and Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Traffic Alert are standard from the volume SE upward but are an optional Driver Assistance package on the base S. Adaptive cruise, Lane Assist and Light Assist come only on the SEL and SEL Premium.
Vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention rates Superior, but there is no pedestrian AEB rating, and the system is optional on the base S.
Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Traffic Alert is standard from the SE upward and optional on the S. On the volume trims it only warns; with Lane Assist on the SEL it can countersteer. No safe-exit warning or surround-view camera is offered.
Lane Assist (lane keeping, not centering) is offered only on the SEL and SEL Premium, so the volume SE has no lane-departure system. Travel Assist centering did not arrive until the 2022 refresh.
ACC (with Stop & Go on automatic models) is limited to the SEL and SEL Premium, so the volume SE uses conventional cruise, and no trim has integrated highway assist.
No hands-free driving system is offered, nor even a hands-on lane-centering highway assist.
IIHS rates the LED reflector headlights on the S, SE and R-Line (volume) trims Poor. The LED projectors with high-beam assist on the SEL and SEL Premium rate only Marginal.
The conventional three-box shape, with an upright greenhouse, large rear glass and relatively slim pillars, gives good natural sightlines. A rearview camera is standard, but no surround-view camera is offered.
IIHS rates LATCH ease of use Acceptable, with complete LATCH hardware in two seats and a tether-only center seat. The roomy rear seat helps with rear-facing seats, but three across is tight.
4Space & ComfortMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.12C
Five-passenger compact sedan on every 2019 trim (S, SE, R-Line, SEL, SEL Premium), the launch year of the A7 generation.
Competitive front headroom for the compact class.
Front legroom trails the Civic and Sentra.
Mid-pack rear headroom for a compact sedan.
The new A7 body's longer wheelbase gives the Jetta one of the roomier rear seats among compact sedans, roughly matching the Civic.
An average compact-sedan trunk; the 60/40 split-folding rear seat adds flexibility.
Conventional storage: a console bin, door pockets, a phone tray and a 60/40 pass-through. Wireless charging is limited to upper trims, and there is nothing clever.
Reviewers find the seats soft and supportive with a comfortable rear bench. The volume SE has a manually adjusted driver seat, though; power adjustment with memory is SEL Premium only.
The comfort-biased tuning rides smoothly over most surfaces despite the torsion-beam rear on 1.4T trims. Big impacts can thud through.
Quieter than most compact rivals at cruise, with some tire noise on coarse pavement.
Dual-zone Climatronic is standard from the SE, which also adds a panoramic sunroof. A Cold Weather package (heated seats) is optional on the SE, R-Line and SEL, and ventilated front seats are SEL Premium only. The base S has manual A/C.
5Cost of OwnershipThe Jetta's best-graded category.3.44B+
The all-new 2019 Jetta (launch year of the seventh generation, 147-hp 1.4T) starts under $20k with destination, among the cheapest compact sedans on sale.
The SE is the volume Jetta. Over the S it adds standard Front Assist AEB and blind-spot monitoring, a panoramic sunroof, heated seats and keyless access, at a price below a comparably equipped Civic EX or Corolla SE.
Repairs fall under the 6-year/72,000-mile warranty for the whole first five years, but only the first scheduled service (1 year/10,000 miles) is included. Routine service costs therefore start early, and the total lands near the compact-sedan average.
The 2019 Jetta reached its fifth year in 2024, when used-car prices were still elevated, so it held value better than VW's historical norm. It still trails the Civic and Corolla on resale.
VW extended its 'People First' 6-year/72,000-mile transferable limited warranty to the new 2019 Jetta. That is longer than Hyundai/Kia's 5/60 and double the 3/36 from Honda, Toyota and Mazda.
The engine and transmission have no separate, longer term; they fall under the 6-year/72,000-mile limited warranty. That beats the 5/60 Japanese norm but falls well short of Hyundai/Kia's 10/100.
Carefree Maintenance covers only the first scheduled service (1 year/10,000 miles). It adds 3 years/36,000 miles of 24/7 roadside assistance and a Car-Net trial. That's a basic package, behind ToyotaCare's 2-year plan and ahead of Honda and Mazda.
$23,005 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (56% retained, or about $12,883) leaves about $10,122 in depreciation. Add the projected $4,300 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $14,422 in total.
6Reliability & QualityGrades below the middle of the scale.1.58D
2019 was the launch year of the A7 Jetta. J.D. Power rates it only average at 76/100, and Consumer Reports gives it 1 out of 5, last of nine 2019 small cars, with owners reporting problems in the climate system/AC and in-car electronics. That puts it at the bottom of the mid band, below the 2021 car (57), which had the same JDP score and a less severe CR verdict.
In the Consumer Reports brand-reliability rankings and J.D. Power's Vehicle Dependability Study, Volkswagen has sat in the lower third, below the industry average, across recent study years. This is a brand-level judgment and is held identical across VWs in the dataset.
MY2019 has 11 NHTSA campaigns, the most of any A7 year. The serious ones are two separate rear coil-spring fracture recalls (a broken spring can damage the tire and cause loss of control), a 62,538-unit ignition-switch recall where the engine can stall while driving, and a TPMS software fix. The rest are small build or compliance campaigns. The volume and the repeated chassis and safety issues put it just under the typical band.
The 147 hp 1.4L TSI (EA211) paired with an 8-speed Aisin torque-converter automatic is a widely used VW combination with no systemic failures, and it avoids the dry-clutch DSG. Known EA211-family water-pump/thermostat-housing leaks, PCV issues and carbon buildup from direct injection keep it mid-band. Some owners also report transmission grinding noises in the launch year.
The new A7 cabin is tidy, with good switchgear feel and an available digital cockpit, but reviewers widely criticized its hard plastics and decontenting compared with earlier Jettas. It is competitive for the class rather than a standout.
Puebla-built A7 Jettas feel solid, but as a launch year the 2019 car has an average 76/100 JDP quality score and several assembly campaigns (misaimed LED headlights, missing key-in-ignition chime, defective coil springs). That puts it slightly below the 2020 (70) and 2021 (69) cars.
Volkswagen has roughly 600-650 US dealers, about half Toyota's count, which leaves gaps in rural markets, and its service satisfaction is mid-pack. Metro coverage is adequate.
The Jetta shares the MQB platform and EA211 engines with the Golf and Tiguan and has sold in volume for decades, so it has the best independent-shop familiarity and aftermarket of any VW. Parts still cost more than Japanese or Korean equivalents. The 2019 car came with VW's 6-yr/72k-mi transferable bumper-to-bumper warranty, which was cut to 4 yr/50k mi for MY2021.
7Technology & InfotainmentOne of the Jetta's weakest categories.0.70F
The volume SE uses the 6.5-inch Composition Color screen. Only the SEL and SEL Premium get the 8-inch unit.
Simple menus and physical climate controls, but the 6.5-inch screen on volume trims is small and dated, and every 2019 trim uses the pre-MIB3 system.
App-Connect CarPlay/Android Auto is standard on every trim but works only with a cable. Wireless projection did not arrive until the 2021 MIB3 system.
Native navigation is SEL Premium only. Volume trims rely on phone projection and basic command-style voice control.
Volume trims have basic 4- or 6-speaker audio. The well-regarded BeatsAudio system (400 W, 12 channels, subwoofer) comes only on SEL and SEL Premium.
The 10.25-inch configurable Digital Cockpit is excellent but standard only on the SEL and SEL Premium. The volume S, SE and R-Line keep analog gauges.
There is no published over-the-air vehicle software program for the 2019 Jetta's MIB2 systems, so updates are dealer-performed.
The 2019 car carries the older Car-Net platform. App-based remote lock/unlock, status and parked-car location come through Car-Net Security & Service, which needs a subscription after a trial period and adds services on SEL trims. The free standard next-generation Car-Net only arrived for 2020, and there is no digital key.
The S has a single front USB port, and a second port and wireless charging come on upper trims. There is no AC outlet.
KESSY keyless access for the front doors and trunk with push-button start comes from the SE. Remote start comes via the Cold Weather package or upper trims, and the S uses a conventional key. There is no phone-as-key.
A rearview camera is standard. Rear Traffic Alert comes in the Driver Assistance package (optional on the S, standard SE and up), Park Distance Control is top-trim only, and there is no 360-degree camera.
No 2019 Jetta trim offers a head-up display.
8Use-Case FitOne of the Jetta's weakest categories.1.28D
A roomy rear seat (37.4 in of legroom) and wide rear doors take child seats reasonably well, but the 14.1 cu ft sedan trunk limits stroller-plus-gear duty.
Crash ratings are good (NHTSA 5-star overall, IIHS Good in the crash tests). Front Assist AEB, blind-spot and rear traffic alert are optional on the base S and standard from the SE, while adaptive cruise and lane assist are SEL only.
Comfortable seats and a quiet ride suit medium-length trips, but rear amenities are thin and the trunk is modest.
The torquey 1.4T (184 lb-ft from 1,400 rpm) and smooth 8-speed automatic make it relaxed in traffic, with occasional low-speed hesitation and rough stop/start.
EPA ratings of 30/40/34 MPG on regular fuel are strong for a non-hybrid compact.
A manageable footprint and good outward visibility, with an average 36.4 ft turning circle. The rear camera is standard, but parking sensors come only on the top trim.
There is no US tow rating, and the cargo space is a sedan trunk, so this is not a work vehicle.
The simple 1.4T and torsion-beam package should hold up with care, but it is a launch-year design with no fleet-abuse reputation.
There is no onboard power, tie-down or upfit provision beyond basic trunk hooks.
40 MPG highway and a 13.2-gallon tank give 500-plus miles of highway range in a quiet, comfortable cabin. Adaptive cruise is SEL only, which limits fatigue reduction on the volume trims.
Front-wheel drive only, with low ground clearance and no tow rating, so it is pavement-bound beyond gravel roads.
The 60/40 split-folding rear seat and 14.1 cu ft trunk fit normal luggage. Bulky gear is a squeeze, and there is no hitch or factory rail.
9Driving ExperienceOne of the Jetta's strongest categories.2.26C
Secure and composed but tuned for comfort. The torsion-beam rear on 1.4T trims makes it less agile than a Mazda3 or Civic.
Accurate, light-to-moderate electric steering (15:1 ratio) with little feedback.
Adequate stopping power with a progressive pedal. The 1.4T trims use rear drum brakes, and stopping distances are unremarkable.
Strong low-end torque and a smooth 8-speed automatic, but some hesitation from a stop and a noticeable stop/start system.
The 1.4T is quiet at cruise and inoffensive under load, if characterless.
An average turning circle for a compact sedan.
Good outward visibility and logical physical controls with a tilt/telescoping wheel, though the volume SE's manual seat lacks power lumbar.
Pleasant but forgettable in 1.4T form. The 6-speed manual on the S adds a little engagement, and the GLI is the enthusiast pick.
10Value & Market PositionOne of the Jetta's strongest categories.2.35C+
The S comes with 16-inch alloys, LED headlights, a 6.5-inch touchscreen with CarPlay/Android Auto and a rearview camera. AEB and blind-spot monitoring are a $450 option on the S, while the Corolla makes Toyota Safety Sense standard. From the volume SE up, those assists plus a sunroof and heated seats are standard.
It starts under $20k and pairs a torquey 147-hp/184 lb-ft 1.4T with strong highway economy, a roomy back seat and a transferable 6/72 warranty, so the content per dollar is strong. Plain interior materials keep it short of standout value.
Five well-spaced trims (S, SE, R-Line, SEL, SEL Premium) span about $19k–$28k, and the S offers a 6-speed manual. There is only one engine and FWD, and the GLI arrived separately later in the model year.
US sales of about 100,000 in the launch year made it VW's second-best seller and a steady mid-pack compact. That is still well under half of Civic or Corolla volume, in a sedan market that was shrinking.
VW carries a 'German-engineered' feel a notch above mainstream Asian rivals. A mixed reliability reputation and recent Dieselgate damage in the US leave its image neutral overall.
Launch-year cars typically carry thin incentives early, but by late 2019 VW was running regular Jetta finance and lease offers in a soft compact-sedan market. These were modest, not desperation pricing.
MY2019 is the launch year of the seventh-generation Jetta on the modern MQB platform, with new styling, an available digital cockpit and the 1.4T/8-speed. It was the freshest design in the class when sold.
Reviewers praised the comfortable ride, roomy cabin and economy, but ranked it in the lower half of the class for numb handling and a plain interior. Its notable recognition was a U.S. News 'Best New Car for Teens' award.
