The verdict

A struggling compact sedan, strong on ownership and held back by performance.

The 2021 Jetta is a roomy, quiet, frugal compact sedan that undercut most rivals on price, starting at $19,990 and landing the well-equipped SE at $23,890. It returns 33 MPG combined and 39 on the highway on regular gas, and earned a 5-star NHTSA overall rating. In exchange, the 147-hp engine is slow, the volume trims get a small 6.5-inch screen and Poor-rated headlights, and VW cut the warranty to 4 years/50,000 miles with no longer powertrain coverage. This was also the last year before the 2022 refresh, so a 2021 buyer gets the soon-replaced 1.4T engine.

Detailed scoring by subject

1Performance & PowertrainThe Jetta's lowest-graded category.0.05F
Horsepower
147 hp (1.4L TSI turbo-four, S/SE/SEL); GLI 2.0T 228 hp
4/100
#8 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

MY2021 is a carry-over year of the A7 generation (launched for 2019), still on the 147-hp 1.4T that the 158-hp 1.5T replaced for 2022. Modest output for the class.

Torque
184 lb-ft @ 1,400 rpm (1.4T); GLI 258 lb-ft
19/100
#4 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

184 lb-ft from low rpm is strong for a mainstream compact base engine, well above naturally aspirated rivals' ~130-140 lb-ft.

0–60 mph time
~7.7 s (1.4T 8-speed auto); Edmunds tested 8.4 s; GLI ~5.6 s
28/100
#5 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Commonly cited 0-60 time for the 1.4T automatic is about 7.7 s, adequate for the class; Edmunds' own 2021 test was slower at 8.4 s.

Powertrain refinement70
#6 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

The 1.4T delivers early, flat torque and cruises quietly, better than buzzy naturally aspirated base engines; some lag from rest and thin top-end pull keep it out of the 80s.

Transmission behavior70
#5 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

A conventional 8-speed torque-converter automatic (6-speed manual on the S) avoids the CVT drone of most rivals, though reviewers note slow kickdowns and occasional low-speed hesitation.

AWD/4WD availability15
#5 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Every 2021 US Jetta, including the GLI, is front-wheel drive; 4Motion is not offered.

Powertrain lineup breadth45
#7 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Two gas engines (147-hp 1.4T and 228-hp 2.0T GLI), each with automatic and manual choices, but no hybrid, PHEV or EV, trailing electrified rivals like the Corolla and Elantra.

NHTSA overall rating
5 stars overall (4 frontal, 5 side, 4 rollover)
100/100
#1 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

The 2021 Jetta (Mk7/A7 generation that began in 2019, the last year before the 2022 mid-cycle refresh) holds a 5-star NHTSA overall rating, with frontal and rollover subscores of 4 stars.

IIHS awards & crashworthiness64
#10 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Good in both small-overlap tests, moderate overlap, original side, roof strength and head restraints, but only Acceptable in the updated side test, and the 2021 Jetta earned no Top Safety Pick award (held back by its headlights).

Standard ADAS suite breadth48
#12 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Front Assist AEB, Blind Spot Monitor and Rear Traffic Alert are standard on the volume SE and R-Line but a $500 option on the base S, and adaptive cruise and Lane Assist are confined to the SEL and SEL Premium. IQ.DRIVE/Travel Assist did not arrive until the 2022 refresh.

Automatic emergency braking performance45
#13 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention rates Superior, but IIHS has no pedestrian AEB rating for the 2021 Jetta and the system is not standard on the base S.

Blind-spot & cross-traffic coverage62
#6 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Blind Spot Monitor and Rear Traffic Alert are standard from the SE up and optional on the S; the system is alert-only with no safe-exit warning or surround-view camera.

Lane keeping & centering42
#13 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Lane Assist (lane keeping, not centering) is available only on the SEL and SEL Premium; the volume SE and R-Line have no lane departure warning, and Travel Assist centering was not offered until 2022.

Adaptive cruise & highway assist45
#12 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

ACC with Stop & Go (automatic) is limited to the SEL/SEL Premium, so the volume SE has conventional cruise only, and there is no integrated highway assist on any 2021 trim.

Hands-free driving availability5
#2 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

No hands-free driving system is offered, nor even a hands-on lane-centering highway assist.

Headlight performance25
#10 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

IIHS rates the LED reflector headlights on the S, SE and R-Line (volume) trims Poor, and the SEL/SEL Premium LED projectors with high-beam assist only Marginal.

Outward visibility72
#2 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

A conventional three-box profile with an upright greenhouse, large rear glass and relatively slim pillars gives good natural sightlines; a rearview camera is standard but no surround-view camera is offered.

Child-seat (LATCH) usability62
#10 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

IIHS rates LATCH ease of use Acceptable with two complete LATCH positions plus a tether-only center seat; the roomy rear seat helps with rear-facing seats, but anchors take some digging and three-across is tight.

4Space & ComfortOne of the Jetta's strongest categories.2.17C

Front headroom
38.5 in (less with the panoramic sunroof on SE and up)
63/100
#9 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Competitive front headroom for the compact class; 2021 is a carry-over year of the A7 body launched for 2019.

Front legroom
41.1 in
28/100
#13 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Front legroom trails the Civic/Elantra (42.3 in) and Sentra (44.0 in).

Rear headroom
37.2 in
55/100
#8 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Mid-pack rear headroom; reviewers rate it among the better compact sedans versus Corolla and Sentra.

Rear legroom
37.4 in
54/100
#2 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Rear legroom is among the roomier compact sedans, roughly matching the Civic.

Cargo/trunk volume
14.1 cu ft (all trims)
41/100
#11 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Average compact-sedan trunk; the 60/40 split-folding rear seat adds flexibility.

In-cabin storage & clever solutions56
#4 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Conventional compact-sedan storage (console bin, door pockets, phone tray, 60/40 pass-through); wireless charging pad only from the SEL, nothing clever.

Seat comfort66
#6 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Soft, well-bolstered front seats and a well-sculpted rear bench, but the volume SE's driver seat is only 6-way power with no power lumbar (memory and lumbar are SEL Premium).

Ride quality70
#3 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Comfort-biased tuning rides smoothly over most surfaces despite the torsion-beam rear, though large impacts like railroad crossings can land with a heavy thud.

Cabin quietness66
#3 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Reviewers find the cabin quieter than most compact rivals at cruise, with some tire noise over coarse pavement.

Climate & comfort features58
#2 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

SE adds heated front seats, dual-zone Climatronic and a panoramic sunroof; heated wheel/remote start need the Cold Weather package, and ventilated seats plus heated rears are SEL Premium-only; the base S has manual A/C.

5Cost of OwnershipThe Jetta's best-graded category.3.21B+
Base MSRP
$19,990 (S 6-speed manual, incl. $995 destination); $20,790 S automatic
100/100
#1 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

The 2021 Jetta (last year of the pre-refresh seventh generation, 147-hp 1.4T) starts under $20k with destination, among the cheapest compact sedans on sale and below the Civic, Corolla and Mazda3.

Volume-Trim Price
$23,890 (SE automatic, incl. $995 destination; R-Line $23,790–$24,590, SEL $26,740, SEL Premium $29,040)
100/100
#1 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

The SE is the volume Jetta, adding standard Front Assist/blind-spot monitoring, sunroof, heated seats and keyless access over the S, and still prices below a comparably equipped Civic EX or Corolla SE.

5-Year Maintenance & Repair Cost
~$4,200 over first 5 years (estimate, SE 1.4T 8A)
74/100
#9 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Two years/20,000 miles of Carefree Maintenance and a conventional 8-speed automatic keep early costs low; the 1.4T's 10k-mile service interval and post-warranty repairs push years 4–5 up, putting the first-5-year total near the compact-sedan average. Edmunds' current 2021 TCO figure ($6,977 maintenance + $4,061 repairs) describes buying the car used today (ownership years ~6–10), so it is not used here.

5-Year Resale Value Retention
~58% of MSRP retained after ~5 yr (SE; ~56–67% by source)
77/100
#12 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

The 2021 Jetta aged through the 2021–23 used-car price spike, so it has held value better than VW's historical norm, though it still trails the Civic and Corolla.

Basic warranty
4 yr / 50,000 mi bumper-to-bumper
50/100
#3 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

For MY2021 VW replaced its 6-year/72,000-mile transferable 'People First' warranty with a 4-year/50,000-mile New Vehicle Limited Warranty — better than the 3/36 from Honda, Toyota and Mazda, short of Hyundai/Kia's 5/60.

Powertrain warranty
4 yr / 50,000 mi (no separate longer powertrain term)
0/100
#4 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

From MY2021 VW dropped any standalone powertrain coverage — the engine and transmission share the 4-year/50,000-mile limited warranty, below the 5-year/60,000-mile Japanese norm and far short of Hyundai/Kia's 10-year/100,000-mile term.

Complimentary maintenance & perks66
#4 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Carefree Maintenance covers two scheduled services over 2 years/20,000 miles plus 3 years/36,000 miles of 24/7 roadside assistance and a Car-Net trial — better than Honda/Mazda, close to ToyotaCare, short of a multi-year program.

Effective 5-Year Ownership Cost
$14,234 (≈$10,034 depreciation + $4,200 maintenance)
90/100
#10 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

$23,890 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (58% retained, or about $13,856) leaves about $10,034 in depreciation. Add the projected $4,200 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $14,234 in total.

6Reliability & QualityMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.91C-
Predicted reliability57
#13 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

J.D. Power rates the 2021 Jetta's quality & reliability only 76/100 (Average), and Consumer Reports rates it less reliable than the average 2021 car. Both sources point to average-to-below-average, so it sits in the lower half of the mid band, a little under the 2023 car's 81/100 JDP showing.

Brand reliability track record40
#13 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Volkswagen has sat in the lower third of Consumer Reports brand-reliability rankings and below the industry average in J.D. Power's Vehicle Dependability Study across recent study years. This is a brand-level judgment and is held identical across VWs in the dataset.

Recall & TSB history64
#8 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

MY2021 carries four NHTSA campaigns: two rearview-camera software recalls shared with other 2021 VWs, plus two very small build-quality campaigns (mis-welded airbag control module, missing front-seat-track bolts). None is a powertrain or fire issue, but the count is higher than the 2023 car's zero, so it lands in the middle of the typical band.

Powertrain durability reputation62
#10 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

The 147 hp 1.4L TSI (EA211) with an 8-speed Aisin torque-converter automatic is a widely used VW pairing with no systemic failures, and it avoids the dry-clutch DSG. EA211-family water-pump/thermostat-housing leaks, PCV issues and direct-injection carbon buildup keep it mid-band, below naturally aspirated Japanese compacts.

Interior material quality67
#6 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

The pre-facelift A7 cabin is tidy with good switchgear feel and an available digital cockpit, but reviewers widely criticized hard plastics and decontenting compared with earlier Jettas. It is competitive for the class rather than a standout.

Fit & finish69
#10 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Puebla-built A7 Jettas are well regarded for panel alignment and solidity, but the 2021 car's two small assembly-error recalls (airbag module weld, seat-track bolts) and a merely average JDP quality score keep it a step below the 2023 car.

Dealer & service network55
#13 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Volkswagen's roughly 600-650 US dealers are about half Toyota's count, leaving gaps in rural markets, and its service satisfaction is mid-pack. Metro coverage is adequate.

Parts availability & repair cost60
#12 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Because the Jetta shares the MQB platform and EA211 engines with the Golf and Tiguan and has sold in volume for decades, it has the best independent-shop familiarity and aftermarket of any VW. Parts still cost more than Japanese or Korean equivalents. The 2021 Jetta came with a 4-yr/50k-mi warranty and 2-yr/20k-mi Carefree Maintenance.

7Technology & InfotainmentOne of the Jetta's weakest categories.0.87F
Touchscreen size
6.5 in (S/SE/R-Line); 8.0 in MIB3 on SEL/SEL Premium
0/100
#9 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

The volume SE uses the small 6.5-inch MIB2 Composition Color screen; only the SEL and SEL Premium get the 8-inch MIB3 unit.

Infotainment UX & responsiveness56
#10 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Simple menus and physical climate controls, but the 6.5-inch MIB2 screen on volume trims is small and dated; the SEL's MIB3 is quicker and adds multi-phone pairing.

Wireless CarPlay / Android Auto58
#3 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

App-Connect (CarPlay/Android Auto) is standard but wired on S/SE/R-Line; wireless arrives only with the MIB3 system on SEL and SEL Premium.

Voice control & native navigation42
#8 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Native navigation is SEL Premium-only; volume trims rely on phone projection and basic command-style voice control, though MIB3 improves recognition on SEL+.

Audio system quality52
#11 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Basic four/six-speaker audio on volume trims; the 400-watt, nine-speaker BeatsAudio upgrade is confined to SEL and SEL Premium.

Digital instrument cluster50
#8 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

The 10-inch configurable Digital Cockpit is excellent but standard only on SEL and SEL Premium; the volume S/SE/R-Line keep analog gauges with a small multifunction display (the digital cluster became standard on all trims only with the 2022 refresh).

OTA update capability30
#3 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Neither the MIB2 nor the 2021 MIB3 Jetta systems had a published over-the-air vehicle software program in the US; updates are dealer-performed.

Companion app & remote functions56
#4 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Car-Net app offers remote lock/unlock, parked-car locator and status (remote start only where the car has it), with Guide & Inform tied to SEL Premium; no digital key.

Charging ports & device power50
#1 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Two USB-C ports up front are standard, but wireless charging is SEL-only and there is no AC outlet.

Keyless & remote access58
#9 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

KESSY keyless access with push-button start is standard from the SE, but remote start is only an SE/R-Line Cold Weather option (standard on SEL Premium), the S uses a conventional key, and there is no phone-as-key.

Camera & parking aids42
#8 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Rearview camera standard; Rear Traffic Alert standard from the SE; Park Distance Control sensors only on the SEL Premium, and no 360-degree camera or park assist on any trim.

Head-up display availability10
#6 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

No head-up display is offered on any 2021 Jetta trim.

8Use-Case FitOne of the Jetta's weakest categories.1.33D
Kid & car-seat practicality60
#4 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Generous 37.4-in rear legroom helps rear-facing seats, but a sedan trunk and ordinary rear door openings limit stroller-plus-gear loads.

Family safety package58
#12 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

5-star NHTSA overall and Good IIHS crash results, with AEB and blind-spot standard from the SE; but AEB is a $500 option on the base S, and adaptive cruise and Lane Assist are SEL-only.

Family road-trip comfort56
#3 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Quiet cabin and a supportive rear bench suit four adults, but no rear vents of note on volume trims, heated rears only on SEL Premium, and 14.1 cu ft of trunk caps luggage.

Daily driving ease70
#9 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

The 1.4T's 184 lb-ft from low rpm and a conventional 8-speed automatic make for easy traffic manners, with some hesitation from rest; stop-and-go ACC is SEL-only.

Commuting cost efficiency70
#7 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Good gas-compact economy on regular fuel with cheap consumables, though no hybrid is offered.

Parking & maneuverability66
#11 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Compact footprint and good outward visibility with a standard rear camera, but a 36.7-ft turning circle is middling and parking sensors are SEL Premium-only.

Work capability15
#7 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

No US tow rating and only a 14.1 cu ft trunk; not a work vehicle.

Durability for work duty48
#5 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Mainstream 1.4T/8-speed hardware should hold up with care, but the car has no fleet reputation for hard use.

Jobsite & upfit practicality15
#8 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

No onboard power, tie-down system or upfit ecosystem.

Long-distance comfort & range64
#4 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Quiet, settled highway manners and about 39 MPG highway (roughly 430+ miles a tank) suit touring, but the volume SE has only conventional cruise with no lane keeping.

Outdoor & adventure capability26
#7 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

FWD-only with low ground clearance and no tow rating; fine on graded gravel, little more.

Gear & luggage flexibility45
#10 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

14.1 cu ft trunk with a 60/40 split-folding rear seat; no roof rails or factory hitch.

The S gets LED headlights, the 6.5-inch touchscreen with App-Connect, but Front Assist AEB and blind-spot monitoring are only in an optional package — behind the Corolla and Civic, which make AEB standard. From the volume SE up those assists, plus sunroof, heated seats and keyless access, are standard at a lower price than rivals.

Feature value per dollar72

A sub-$20k start, a torquey 147-hp/184 lb-ft 1.4T with strong highway economy and a roomy back seat make it good content for the money; plain interior materials and the cut to a 4/50 warranty keep it short of standout value.

Trim & configuration breadth66

Five well-spaced trims (S, SE, R-Line, SEL, SEL Premium) spanning roughly $19k–$29k with a 6-speed manual on S and R-Line, but one engine, FWD only, and the GLI sold separately.

Sales popularity & market acceptance45

US sales fell 25% in 2021 to about 62,000 — a fraction of the Civic, Corolla and Elantra volume and a declining trajectory in a shrinking sedan market, partly chip-shortage driven.

Brand desirability & image57

VW carries a 'German-engineered' feel a notch above mainstream Asian rivals, but a mixed reliability reputation and lingering Dieselgate damage in the US leave it neutral overall.

Deals & incentive availability62

Early in the 2021 model year VW ran Jetta finance and cash offers, but the mid-2021 chip shortage dried up inventory and incentives across the segment, so deals were modest for much of the year.

Model freshness52

MY2021 is the third year of the seventh generation (launched 2019) and the last before the MY2022 refresh that brought the 1.5L engine and restyled fascias — a 2021 buyer gets the soon-superseded powertrain, though MIB3 infotainment arrived on upper trims this year.

Critical reception & awards56

Reviewed as a sensible, roomy, efficient choice but ranked in the lower half of the class for bland handling and interior, with no major awards for the standard Jetta.
